Anthony & Sammy are riveting & tremendous together in this stunning medley of Mr. Newley song classics...love to watch it over and over, this is as good as it gets...love and miss you both & RIP great ones!
So wonderful! Wish they knew how much they are still admired, loved etc.Met Mr Newley in '93 after seeing him in Scrooge and he was lovely! I was about 20 and he was surprised I knew who he was etc!.Just joined his appreciation society. They have more stuff like this you can buy.Magical.He wanted to be remembered as the man who wrote great songs! He certainly did--and more! x
How wonderful to have the chance to enjoy these two amazingly talented gentlemen. I had the joy of seeing Anthony Newley in person about 35 years ago. Not sure how accurate this is, but I recall a story that Sammy Davis Jr. was reluctant to record "The Candy Man" and agreed to it, only if it could be done in one take. How sad that genius the likes of Newley and Sammy Davis were taken from us far too soon. My thanks for posting this fantastic clip for others to see this exceptional talent.
Extraordinary performers who work so well together showing off so much talent, skill, diversity, and command of the stage is an era gone bye. My wife and I had the great honor to see Sammy perform live in 1982 in a theater in the round. I wish that we could have seen Anthony Newley as well.
This is such sensational entertainment! My wife and I were fortunate enough to be at one of Sammy's live concerts in the early 1980's and he put on a performance that neither of us will ever forget! I wish that we could have been in this audience!
Right on. That's real talent. I think I remember hearing that the entertainers in those days looked up to Al Jolson very much. Everyone thought he was just the greatest. I heard one time that after one of his performances, he was very appreciative of the gracious audience he had that evening so he invited them all to a nearby bar where he played the piano, danced, and sang for them into the wee small hours of the morning.
Obviously a Newley fan, as am I! Envious that you were so fortunate to have met him! I've been a fan for over 40 years and I also keep returning to this posting. I remember watching it when it was telecast, I think in 1972. An amazing talent who left us much too soon.
This is sheer genius. We will never encounter talent like is again. I watched Britain's got Talent for the first time last night and had to switch off - depressing is the word that first comes to mind. Is that all there is?
TWO OF THE BEST GENTS AND TALENTS THAT EVER LIVED! PROUD TO SAY THAT I KNEW THEM BOTH AND I'M SO HAPPY THAT WE LAL HAVE THESE CLIPS ON TH-cam TO REMEMBER WHAT GREAT TALENTS THEY WERE~ RIP SAMMY/TONY.. WE LOVED YOU BOTH!
OMG....this was stunning and magnificent. I am SUCH a Newley fan. God bless Sammy for recognizing his talent and making hits of his songs. For me Newley does Newley best of all. Such a treasure. Thank you for unearthing this....it has given me indescribable joy. I've loved Anthony Newley since I was a child and saw him sing What Kind of Fool Am I on Ed Sullivan! More talented than any artist I can think of....and this is from a rock n' roll girl.
Had the great pleasure of attending Anthony Newley's performance (twice) at Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas. Absolutey mezmerizing shows. Have ALWAYS conluded that he and Bobby Darin, were THE greatest!!! Yes, Bobby Darin ran "circles" around Sammy.........
Just had another listen of this fabulous clip! The orchestra especially during "Gonna Build A Mountain" sounds fantastic! Yes, the "old stuff" definitely is superior to so much of what's around today. I'm a "baby boomer" and feel so lucky to have lived during an amazing music and film era. To the wonderful Anthony Newley, all of your fans will be thinking of you on what would have been your 82nd birthday and about what you could have written, had time been kinder to you.
Yes, "SuperNewley", that name describes him perfectly! I remember watching this absolutely amazing program when it originally aired, I think in 1972. Both he and Sammy are so very much missed. There are not enough superlatives to describe Anthony Newley's talent. I always come back to this clip when I need a dose of happiness! We can only hope that today's generation will come to know the genius that was Anthony Newley.
Good God-- I actually remember seeing this live-- or at least a re run of it. It was New Year's Eve -- My mom and sister sister went to bed, but my brother and I stayed up. We watched this, and when it was over, we couldn't figure anything would top it, so we saw the clock hit midnight, wished other a happy new year and went to bed. I was still living at home then so it had to be betseen 1971 and 1974... Magic!
Isn't it time there was an anthology of Newley's work for all of us to enjoy? I think he has a lot of fans out there who would appreciate a well researched and presented documentary on his life times and work.
Newley and Bricusse. It is great to hear one of their songs again as Jennifer Hudson sings "It''s a New Life." in a weight loss commercial. They were great song writers. Sadly Anthony Stopped the world and got off. Bricusse still lives however at 79. Live on Brother
Besides the magnificent live performance of these two first-rate entertainers, kudos to the top-notch full orchestra with a note-perfect job accompanying them!
Just finished watching this clip for the umpteenth time. It should be compulsory viewing for anyone even contemplating a career in the music business. I've been a Tony Newley fan for well over 40 years. Not enough superlatives in any language to adequately describe his talent. Very much missed. Can't thank you enough for posting this.
Used to think this was cheesy and melodramatic but there is some serious great music here and performances. Holy moly. I know I am late to the party don't cast aspersions upon my skull.
Hi 'lovesmusic36',You were lucky to see this performance-its magic. I think I was born too late(1970) as I much prefer the 'old stuff' and old movies.Tony would have been 82 tomorrow-do miss him....There's so much more to the man too;if you research his music..x
@recklessprocess Not exactly. This show was from 1973. Sammy was around for another 17 years and Tony Newley was around for another 26 years. But for both, it was still too soon.
It's the song from Newley/Bricusse's first musical "Stop the World - I want to get off" and is called "Malenki Malchik" which in Russian means little boy.
THANK YOU.

My folks took me and my sister to Vegas in 1966 and we saw Sammy.I was 16. I now know I saw the greatest performer I would ever see.
Was it just me or was anybody else really feeling that Who Can I Turn To/What Kind of Fool Am I combo there? It was sweet!
This is pure genius ....two remarkable composers entertainers ......great stuff ...thank God for TH-cam ..this is what it's for .....

Extremely enjoyable to watch and listen to. They obviously had a great rapport.

That's a great story! Showstopper!

Anthony Newley once told me that this should be in a time capsule. -- You tube is that time capsule
It don't get much better than that!

Note to myself: this has The Beautiful Land in the medley
at 5:11 Newley looks like a very evil King Richard the 3rd. :)))
YEP....JACK ENGLISH...WEHO....9/2014...
Please someone could tell me the name of the first song? Thanx.
But why do you cut it off?????
Does someone know the name of the song about little boy?
It's the song from Newley/Bricusse's first musical "Stop the World - I want to get off" and is called "Malenki Malchik" which in Russian means little boy.

Just a few years later they were both dead. sniff
