Anthony Newley wrote & performed such powerful songs. Unique. Theatrical..and Sammy Davis Jr interpreted Newley perfectly..on record & Live. Close friends. Doesn't get better than this. Rest in Peace
I loved Anthony Newley. He was enormously talented, and had a big influence on David Bowie's singing. Also, when I wrote to Mr. Newley at age 16, he actually wrote me back. Mensch.
In 1965 I saw Anthony Newley in his Broadway theater production of "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd". In 1973 I saw him in his London West End production of "The Good Old Bad Old Days". I was waiting outside the theater for the doors to open, when a Rolls Royce pulled up and out popped Sammy Davis Jr.
WowZa! They were wonderful. Wherever you are Anthony and Sammy - thank you for leaving some of you here with anyone lucky enough to be alive! RIP both you guys!
Wow! This is a classic. This piece of 'showbiz' memory, history is so great and beautiful. Mr.Newley was a very talented songwriter and he had a particular, interesting and amusing way of interpreting his own compositions. Sammy Davis, jr. What can you say about this man that hasn't been said. He simply was one of the very best entertainers that ever lived. I honestly believe that he doesn't get all the credit as a singer that he deserves.
Wow! Two brilliant balladeers from the post war generation. You could not get better harmonies if the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. and the wonderfully brilliant Anthony Newley had been born to the same mother. The blend of their voices is simply divine and magical. So entertaining ...
Sammy Davis Jr sings from the heart and with sincerity. One would feel he is singing for you only. I have been following him since the fifties and the feeling is the same. Bless his soul.
that Hugh gold ring you see on Sammy's little finger is a Black Star Sapphire,it belong to Elvis and one day Sammy just complimented how Beautiful it was,and Elvis being Elvis gave it to Sammy in Friendship, Sammy was always proud of the ring.its Goreous! true story.
As much as I love Anthony Newley's powerful singing voice and talent, Sammy tops everyone, every time! You were the ultimate and best performer Sammy! Unbelievable! Love them both xx
There are not many who can compete with the genius of sammy davis ,but i have to say ,antony newley can walk that plank ,this is just an astonishing piece of work, so many lessons to be learnt ,for all those so called new celebs ,from xfactor,
Wow. I got goosebumps when they did "What Kind of Fool Am I" and "Who Can I Turn To". These men were consummate performers. They look so incredibly natural up there. Very entertaining.
Well, 2 years later and I revisit this and if anything it is even more staggering today, I cant think of a better performance by anyone than this, everything is just perfect.
Doesn't get more brilliant than these two phenomenal talents, never will see the likes of Anthony & Sammy again...individually or as a duet team they are the ultimate and this appearance on Burt Bacharach is one to savor and enjoy over and over!
Sammy David Jr is the best all time entertainer! Bar none! Love u Sammy!!! RIP & Anthony my man, how u like my impersonation now? lol RIP you both - we love you both, A/A
Believe me - Anthony Newley I have always thought was David Bowie's first and most unlikely perhaps inspirations - tones and voice 'character' changes etc... brilliant
Once again the "magic" of these two great entertainers, bursts out from the computer screen. Just listen to the marvellous orchestra, and the timing of these two stars,"supporting, and playing off each other"; shows us once again what real proffessional class they had. If this video doesn't bring a smile, and a lump to your throat, your "soul" needs looking at. Thanks "bailey markham"
Great duo together. Timeless music and performers. Style as well. Take note all of you here--you came to this video for a reason (there may be some outliers)--Follow your dreams/heart, give it all you have, persist, and be yourself. --Bests
Every Now And Again Along Comes A Live Performance That Just Leaves You Close To Tears, This Is One Of Those Moments ! Two Brilliant Talents That Met At The Right Time, Pure Genius, And Whoever Put The Music Together Deserves Credit.
Testament to the quality of these two that we are all watching and enjoying 42 years after the recording! Consider this; do you think people will be watching and enjoying any of the current crop of talent in 40+ years? These guys are timeless talents that we haven't seen since and sadly won't see again. Enjoy
One wrote and performed many of these on broadway. The other made hit records out of the same songs. Such entirely different styles and voices. Davis has that classical smooth voice with all that soul and blues. The other an unorthodox, brassy and broad voice. Yet Their capacity to communicate meaning and warmth is shared
Anthony Newley was incredibly "mercurial"- I mean looking at the videos of him here on TH-cam through the years, it seems that he never sang his songs the same way twice! Plus his voice, mannerisms were always undergoing an evolution! What a great artist! And of course Sammy Davis Jr. was no slouch either!
His talent was really special and what a joy to see him coupled with all of these other so very accomplished and famous performers. Tony was one of a kind!
Thanks for giving us the entire clip without cutting off the ending...I actually met Newley once and we spoke of this clip at length...I truly believe it deserves a special regarded place in television history celebrating two great talents who owed very much to one another...
In honour (Canadian spelling!) of what would have been Anthony Newley's 84th birthday, I watch this yet again and remain in awe of his incredible talent. I became a fan in 1965 and my loyalty hasn't waivered. So grateful for youtube and to those who kindly post these performances. Thank you.
Wonderful video! Both extremely talented men, unique in their own way. So glad they did this performance together. I wish they were both still with us.
These two are so fabulous together. Both such unique talents - Sammy as a singer, dancer, actor and impressionist and Tony as a songwriter, singer, and actor - and they compliment each other beautifully. Sammy was just 64 when he passed in 1990 and Anthony only 67 in 1999.
Whoever directed this failed to get (or use) a reaction shot of Tony watching Sammy’s UNBELIEVABLE opening bars of Once In a Lifetime. Every time I watch this amazing video this always drives me nuts.
two of my absolute favourites (yes, canadian spelling) and two of the greatest talents I've had the honour to hear. Saw Newly in Roar on Broadway, and Davis Jr. on TV my whole life. these two are just greater than great. thank you for posting this.
Outstanding! This is real talent and real entertainment ... and this is coming from a lifelong rocker. I'm not sure whether it gets any better than this.
And they were singing Newley’s songs...magnificent! They were the best of friends... until they apparently had a big falling out. But the magic they made together... can’t be replicated.
Not only brilliant songs and matching performances, but a sublime medley with astounding arrangement and orchestration! It looks like about a week of rehearsal. Wow.
A friend asked me what I thought of this: "Three extraordinary talents. Sammy could punch out the songs. Anthony's style is a gift from across the pond, and Leslie could write them. Just a lot of fun and enjoyment to listen to. Talents long gone that will never pass this way again. 😢 The closing duet is a gem." 👍
(Think of all the money Anthony Newley made, during those fifteen minutes...) As closely associated, as performers, as they both were with most/all of these songs, I'm really glad that an opportunity presented itself for them to do this material together at such length. I saw camera shots change, but I saw no cuts, so this flawless, (seemingly) loose performance went straight through, from beginning to end, on a soundstage. I suspect that there was a live orchestra there; if the audience was also live, the performance was impeccable; if there was no audience, if responses were overdubbed later, then the ability of these two master entertainers to play to an audience that wasn't really there is nothing short of miraculous.
Anthony newly was born not far from where I live in hackney and his voice is natural no tutoring Sammy Davis is also a great performer and he looked like such a nice person
Magnificent performance by two of the best ever. And what a fabulous staging of this event. I just became aware of the cords from the microphones. Had to be a lot of rehearsal by those two and the stage crew to pull this off so seamlessly! I am in awe of it all!
Those were the days... I adore Sammy and Tony, what Tony did from 3:10 is so funny. :) And what a handsome and sexy man he was... This was one of the greatest moments in music history, thank God for these two men! :)
This is too good not to comment on..l want on this train. Exceptional talent! Awesome songs - Sammy was probably the best singer I’ve ever heard….what an all round entertainer.
There is not a soul alive today who could do that LIVE ... as they did. Wow. It doesn't get any better.
Anthony Newley wrote & performed such powerful songs. Unique. Theatrical..and Sammy Davis Jr interpreted Newley perfectly..on record & Live. Close friends. Doesn't get better than this.
Rest in Peace
just Bloody Fantastic.....Tony and Sammy...R.I.P.....in the great Cocktail Lounge in the sky.
two of my favorite performers, they don't make them like this anymore.
I loved Anthony Newley. He was enormously talented, and had a big influence on David Bowie's singing. Also, when I wrote to Mr. Newley at age 16, he actually wrote me back. Mensch.
Two of the greatest and such good friends you can tell it is real, not staged
Sammy Davis Jr his voice gets into your heart and swishes around
In 1965 I saw Anthony Newley in his Broadway theater production of "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd". In 1973 I saw him in his London West End production of "The Good Old Bad Old Days". I was waiting outside the theater for the doors to open, when a Rolls Royce pulled up and out popped Sammy Davis Jr.
Sweet! Such a lovely memory.
The greatest talent England has ever produced, together with the greatest talent from America. It doesnt get any better.
WowZa! They were wonderful. Wherever you are Anthony and Sammy - thank you for leaving some of you here with anyone lucky enough to be alive! RIP both you guys!

I'm a big Bricusse fan...and Bacharach. This partnership is wonderful.
This cannot be done better, what a wonderful snapshot for future generations to see what real stars were
Oh, my stars....you will never know how special this duo sang joy into my day. Thank you forever.
Honestly why isn't this at a million views already
I saw Newley on Broadway at the Schubert Theatre and at Caesers Palace in Las Vegas. Great memories.
I never tire of Newley's accent. Matt Monroe was another favorite.
Just once in a lifetime!!!! Amazing x
Sammy Davis Jr sings from the heart and with sincerity. One would feel he is singing for you only. I have been following him since the fifties and the feeling is the same. Bless his soul.
Little known fact;
David Bowie readily admits that he emulates Anthony Newley when he sings.
I knew
Laughing Gnome

Two of the Greats! I don't think there is anyone like them, anymore.
From long ago & far away.
Wow. I got goosebumps when they did "What Kind of Fool Am I" and "Who Can I Turn To". These men were consummate performers. They look so incredibly natural up there. Very entertaining.
Two powerhouse performers. Two originals. Two amazing talents.
Well, 2 years later and I revisit this and if anything it is even more staggering today, I cant think of a better performance by anyone than this, everything is just perfect.
The talent on display here is enormous from two of the greatest entertainers the world has ever seen.
Their voices are perfected suited together. Equally great.
two of my absolutely favorite voices singing many of my favorite songs!!!
Gobsmacked. Speechless. Thank you!!!
Hearing them gives me goosebumps.....absolutely fabulous.....I miss this:)
Wow that was a different era. We have nothing like this anymore that matches this much grace with that much musical Talent.
Doesn't get more brilliant than these two phenomenal talents, never will see the likes of Anthony & Sammy again...individually or as a duet team they are the ultimate and this appearance on Burt Bacharach is one to savor and enjoy over and over!

Davis kills this, what a voice.
I'm crying - with transported with joy and inspiration - so moving is it!
Believe me - Anthony Newley I have always thought was David Bowie's first and most unlikely perhaps inspirations - tones and voice 'character' changes etc... brilliant

Wow! Brilliant Talent! Tony's voice is an original and very special. Sammy's voice = perfection!

The person who most likely put together that medley is Newley and Bricusse's long-time musical director, Ian Fraser.
That always just does me in at the end where they just stop and hug/shake hands .Marvelous
I really enjoyed these two , miss them so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You simply cannot better this. Play it daily, inspired by the words 'Just once in my lifetime.' Awesome stuff, by two of the greats. Thanks.
These two make me cry. I miss them so. Andrea

Mr. Davis is terrific without any improvisations with Mr. Newley's great song.
Wow, absolutely brilliant. Wow. I am in tears.
Amazing....this was entertainment...
Two true masters of music.
One wrote and performed many of these on broadway. The other made hit records out of the same songs. Such entirely different styles and voices. His talent was really special and what a joy to see him coupled with all of these other so very accomplished and famous performers. Tony was one of a kind!
Newley was a dreamboat and with Sammy they are perfect duet partners. And Burt is so talented and handsome.

This is what you call class it was truly beautiful
How can you not like that, its just excellent to see
Too much talent here it might explode! =)
Thanks for giving us the entire clip without cutting off the ending...I actually met Newley once and we spoke of this clip at length...I truly believe it deserves a special regarded place in television history celebrating two great talents who owed very much to one another...
The way Sammy sings the first song is the best I've ever heard. He delivers. Tony? Fabulous, thanks for this
I keep coming back to this -so extraordinary -both were such remarkable entertainers -I wish I could have met them
