The Black Paintings of Mark Rothko

A guitar solo recorded on December 3, 2022. Music inspired by the black paintings of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko who said this about his work: “You think my paintings are calm, like windows in some cathedral? You should look again. I’m the most violent of all American painters. Behind those colors there hides the final cataclysm.” (Thanks to Steve Olson for finding this Rothko quote).

Was lucky enough to see him seated alone at table in MOMA's garden one day. I went over and told him I loved his paintings but was too shy to say anything else. He thanked me and I left. Have since read much about him and what I love above all is how generous he was with his money. Always asking young artists he knew if they had enough money when he met them. Surely a sensitive soul like Mark is now enjoying a wonderful next life.

I wonder whats with these eerie blacks that engulf you almost as if you were looking at a portal that will take you to another dimension they are so mystical i dont know how to even describe them. they scare me but bring me peace at the same time i always cry while looking at black rothkos they are hypnotizing
