Wow! I’ve recently watched a ton of Rothko tutorials in preparation for an attempt at something Rothko like in acrylics and this is absolutely the best video that unravels the Rothko technique
"visually unwinding" is also known as re-engineering, but i like unwinding better. ive learned more in this video about appreciating painting than i have in my entire life, truly. thank you thank you
Love watching and listening to you describe the "unwinding" of the painting methods used by the artists. I was under the impression that translucence occurs from light filtering through the layers of paint and bouncing off a white underpainting. Is that not so?
Hello, might you be so kind as to list the additional elements used apart from the paint itself? Also, is there an oil that can be substituted for linseed oil? Perhaps olive oil?
I am not a painter but look up tempera paint yourself, a putrid smell from decomposition is regularly mentioned but once dry it does seem pretty stable.
If u try any types of oil u will get any types of paint.. the only problem with that for the ARTIST is drying the paint.. it’s a good technique..,. Using paint thinner isn’t going work in the long run cause it will fade away.
The endless waiting really puts me off trying oils, I’m sure I’d lose my mojo between coats. Which is a shame because I much prefer the colours and effects of oils. Acrylics are so brash.
I love your behind the scenes look at artist's techniques and your explanations. It's funny. I put my paintings up against Rothko and people that don't know the difference invariably choose mine as the ones worth millions. Go figure.

Nice job! very articulate and skilled teacher and conservator. Now let's talk about how Rothko translated that paint into emotional resonance?
what kind of brush is that please ? how to avoid brush marks ? you always see brush marks when I paint even if I try to avoid them...
To avoid brush marks, you need thinner paint. Use more solvent
Rothko's ghost will haunt your house tonight because you exposed his secrets.
I have been always wondering if the yolk some artist use rots on the canvas.

All proteins are polymerising during denaturation. Actually proteins are polymers of amino acids.
I’m sorry adding varnish to oil ? What does that do ? I’m very curious. Does anyone know ?
adding varnish to the oil paint thins it (making it more fluid and transparent), adds gloss and makes it dry quicker
I feel like it keeps colors vibrancy without destroying it like what turp does, you may have to try different mediums and see the results
Now were getting somewhere
More solvents for thinner wash!!!
