I have never sharpened a chain before, and after watching the video I went out spent 4 or 5 minutes tops mounting the saw in my vise & running thru all the teeth. A very dull chain burned more than cut before zipped thru a log & left really long nice shaving. Awesome outcome.
I have owned chain saws for around 50 years. I always used a filing jig and have always been quite proud of how good my saw always cut. I bought one of these new 2 in 1 sharpeners and used it for the first time this weekend. Wow, it exceeded all my expectations in ease of use, quick to do a touch up and improved the cutting ability of the chain by a lot more than I could have imagined. All this on Australian Jarrah which is a true hardwood. The best investment I have made in ages.

I used to watch my father get frustrated at sharpening chains so I just bought new ones all the time. I really wasn’t using chainsaw that much. But now I cut wood for fireplace. I will say after some apprehension due to price I decided to give it a try. So easy to use and chain cuts like new. Thank you

The file teeth are cut at an angle and are designed to cut while pushing the saw in only one direction. Normally that is pushing away from your body to cut.
Thanks for the video! Just picked up sharpener. The instructions are a little worse then horrible! How you put saw on vice and determined the chain size were especially helpful! Wish you would have zoomed in on tooth before and after but still a huge help.
On most bars that I use the size of the chain is engraved or stamped into the bar. For example if there's a 3/8s stamped on the bar, that is the size of the chain, the size of the file and the 2in1. The 3/8s is also printed on the tool package. The only thing you need to do is turn vice to a comfortable angle and make sure the chain doesn't hit the threaded shaft that closes and opens the jaws. Depend on the size of the saw and bar you may want to put a block under the body of the saw to raise it up and make it fairly level. I hope this helps.
I been using one of these for a year, they are brilliant. Make sure you get the right sharpener for your chain size, as there are different sizes. money well spent.
I use a traditional file with a guide, but I'm considering one these. The biggest thing you've shown me is that I need to clean up and organize the work bench in my shop.
I love this tool. The only down side is you have to buy the right gauge for your saw. I have four chain saws. Two are different eras of the same saw so that's one tool. The other two are different so I need two tools. My big Sthil takes the longest, it has a 25 inch bar on it. I don't understand why you are pulling back on the tool. Did you turn the files around? Files only work in one direction. I use a plastic scrubby pad to clean the files. Over time the tiny chips can build up on the files and keep from cutting as well as they should. Over all a good demonstration.

Nice video, thanks for taking the time to make it. I just ordered one for my small battery-power Stihl 120. It's chain is a 1/4 inch picco chain, so I ordered that 2 in 1 sharpener.
@@theprodigal1969 - no comparison, the gas powered saw is much more powerful, but the ease of use is what sold me on the battery powered one. I'm an light leg amputee and work from a wheelchair, or sitting in my golf cart, making the battery powered saw just right for me. I don't cut long enough the run the battery down, I keep it topped off so that when I want to use it, it's ready.

0.325 is your chain pitch, that doesn't tell you what size tool you need, you need to know the file size, Stihl measures it in millimeters, the ms261c is a 4.8mm for example, the ms170 is a 4mm

I am really not sure what is better. I could see with a normal file a push would make more since. I could be wrong but with this tool I think either way as long as you only go the same direction on the tooth you should be fine. I don’t do a ton of cutting only a few times a year and I have had good luck either direction with this sharpener. It is so nice and super fast to use.
the file will only cut (good) one way. moving in one direction usually pushing away, wear safety glass and leather gloves when doing this. using a combo of push and pull doesn't do your chain any good, DONT DO THAT. this is a good tool though.
I can say many blades different as for a sling knife old timer taught me push with grindstone one side of a blade and pull on the other side. As for saw blade I see the one direction purpose. I imagine the pitch good to see to get correct.
Great tool. One question to anybody here: when he reversed the angle to do the opposite teeth, it appeard (?) that he was going back and forth with the file, vs. only pulling it for the first set of teeth. Do I still just pull, or push and pull , when I do the second round??

I would recommend filing down your takers if you know they are too high. But I am not 100% sure if it would cause an issue. I have been using the 2 in 1 on new chains that have only been sharpened by it.
How do you keep the right file angle to the cutter with these types of sharpeners? Looks like all you can do is eyeball the plastic handle edge and try and keep it parallel with the bar?
Wish there was a video like this for sharpening a chain with one of those chisels with three 45 degree angles. Forgot what that is called, but I have used them in them in the past and the hardest wood cuts like a hot knife through butter and stays sharp all day.
I have still not been able to find information about the angle on these tools. Are they set at 25 deg or 30 deg or something else. And what is the depth on the rakers. My chain is .025 depth and I wouldn't want it filing them down too deep.
Was hoping you would demonstrate how to remove ALL the files. I have this tool and haven't figured out how to remove the files to clean and to rotate them for wear.
@@LeSedici Back when we use to USE common sense in our country, on the job training was just that. You either had common sense, or you were just dumb. Alot of DUMB, today. I`ve lived many decades where the boss would hand you any tool, dangerous, or not, told me to go figure it out. Common sense should kick in when you are over your head. With this country so dumbed down today, i don`t think we should be even handing out pencils anymore without training in how they are supposed to be used, today!

There should be a chain size on your chainsaw bar. That number needs to match up the the file made for that chain. Mine for example is a .325 I hope that helps.

Also details the meaning of the letters found on each link, one of which indicates the file type. The only problem I found is that with small electric saws the file length is shorter than say an MS231 chain, ONE has to buy the tool holder as well, should have an option to buy files of the same length as larger saws one file length thru-out range.

Hey man, just picked one of these up and figured I'd checkout how people use them. You may want to consider moving that air tool or blocking the fitting when you're filing or gringing in that vise
I have 3 saws and they using different size chains, can we change the file on this tool? Or I have to buy one tool specific for each size chain and also when the file goes bad can we change it?
You can buy them on Amazon or at a hardware store that sells Stihl products. They can be used for other brands you just need to check your chain size and buy the correct one for that size. My Stihl runs a .325 chain so I got the sharpener that works for that size.
Thanks so much for posting. I just wanted to watch somebody run through it once before I go for it. Maybe I will be the odd person out, but I think the music just served to distract. I really don't think you need any at all. It seems like a chainsaw video would work better with, say, country music, or maybe even some heavy metal. No, that's the pitch, or tooth to tooth distance. The tool must match that. The tool comes with the proper diameter file. The proper diameter is also printed on the cardboard box that Stihl chains come in, and is probably in their on line literature or catalog.

I have allot of tree cutting as I was doing wife pointed at a cabbage palm, I should have goty ax oh well I used pruner saw got into dirt and yes I'm rough on equipment. I am definitely buying that saw blade sharpener. Have u ever heard of any sharpening for hedgers.

I had that Stihl tool, thought it was awesome for about a month. Then the dumb thing kept falling apart as the files are all held together by the tool clamping mechanism. But it kept popping open, and not really popping that much open rather the files became loose and moved around in the frame even when I held it close. I even watched some videos that also rave about it, another reason I bought it… but since the junk wouldn’t stay together and all those files would become dislodged and a pain to put back in place a dozen different times and then supposedly locking the tool back in place only to have it fall apart again. Maybe if you just sharpened easily it would last. But me using two hands with the bar in a vice, or stump vice, an putting as much pressure on it as I would a hand file was too much for the little guy :/ You might have better luck, though I ditched that, saved the files as they are normal Stihl files you buy at the store and watch some videos on how to properly hand file and be better for it. I just borrowed my neighbors stihl sharpener.works excellent and I just ordered one on Amazon.
Don`t complain when they send you one that somebody returned after they either used it, or find out its a cheap chyneez knock off of what Stihl makes.
I find when I use the 2 in 1 sharpener I have go back and get the gullet as the 2 in 1 files high on the tooth in my application.

When I first used this it took a few seconds to orient it correctly so the flat file sits on the raker. Simple to use tool.

I have not used an electric one but I do know with this one I can sharpen my chain in a few minutes which is super nice.

Pull up on that orange piece and then pull out the file or rotate it

take your chain saw to a dealer, they'll be able to say what's chain size

How many chains can you sharpen before you have to replace the files?
Depends mostly what quality file you buy. Garbage files won`t last past the first sharpening. I`m still using a 10 year old Stihl file on my saw.

As long as the tool matches the chain size then it will sharpen other chain brands.
Thanx. The picture directions show the saw turned 180 degrees after filing in one direction.I assume that’s so your not using the same round file ?
I would guess that is correct. I try to make sure I am using both files the same amount.

Why 2 round files? Are you filing 2 cutter teeth and the depth guide on the same stroke?
Two round because the sharpener has two sides. A flat file is in the middle for the rakers.

Is it important to try to keep all the cutting teeth about the same size, thus try to cut that same amount from each tooth?
Yeah. I try to do the same number of strokes for each tooth

You can buy them on Amazon or at a hardware store that sells Stihl products. They can be used for other brands you just need to check your chain size and buy the correct one for that size. My Stihl runs a .325 chain so I got the sharpener that works for that size.
Thanks so much for posting. I just wanted to watch somebody run through it once before I go for it. Maybe I will be the odd person out, but I think the music just served to distract. I really don't think you need any at all. It seems like a chainsaw video would work better with, say, country music, or maybe even some heavy metal. That music sounds more like the kind of music that should be playing in the background while Brittany shows me how to blend my eyeshadow, which is of course where I'm headed next. Thanks again Mike.

No, that's the pitch, or tooth to tooth distance. The tool must match that. The tool comes with the proper diameter file. The proper diameter is also printed on the cardboard box that Stihl chains come in, and is probably in their on line literature or catalog.
I just remembered why I threw this thing in the corner. Working out of the back of a truck I don't have a vise.
I have an old 041 Farm Boss. What if the size of the chain is worn off the bar?. Any other way to tell?.
Really about 3 passes. 😳 I do like 20 but when it’s done it’s so sharp. Cuts very well. Although I should do a lot less.

I have allot of tree cutting as I was doing wife pointed at a cabbage palm, I should have goty ax oh well I used pruner saw got into dirt and yes I'm rough on equipment. I am definitely buying that saw blade sharpener. Have u ever heard of any sharpening for hedgers.

Our local power equipment shop carries them, you can order from Stihl's website also.

I had that Stihl tool, thought it was awesome for about a month. Then the dumb thing kept falling apart as the files are all held together by the tool clamping mechanism. But it kept popping open, and not really popping that much open rather the files became loose and moved around in the frame even when I held it close. I even watched some videos that also rave about it, another reason I bought it… but since the junk wouldn’t stay together and all those files would become dislodged and a pain to put back in place a dozen different times and then supposedly locking the tool back in place only to have it fall apart again. Maybe if you just sharpened easily it would last. But me using two hands with the bar in a vice, or stump vice, an putting as much pressure on it as I would a hand file was too much for the little guy :/
You might have better luck, though I ditched that, saved the files as they are normal Stihl files you buy at the store and watch some videos on how to properly hand file and be better for it. God bless
Did you buy the knock off 2 in 1 on Amazon or the 2 in 1 at stihl dealers? Maybe that the issue?
