    I've been using the Stihl file for at least 5 years with moderate success. Your video makes everything crystal clear, unlike Stihl's instructions. Thank you for an excellent video, you provide a great service.

    This video is seriously underrated. Super clear and complete explanations. I have never sharpened a chainsaw, so I watched a few youtube videos on how to use 2in1 and was still confused. This video answered almost all my questions (a close up on the tooth while sharpening would be perfect ), and now I feel much more confident. Thank you!

      @@JosephHunstad Thank you very much for reading and replying to viewers comments! Subscribed. One question: I regularly cut tree logs along the grain, as an "old man's" way of splitting firewood. Is there anything different or need to know when sharpening a ripping chain, vs regular chain?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey buddy, fantastic question. The vast majority of chains are crosscut chains. A rib chain has fewer teeth to bring out the very long strands. But sharpening is the same. Thanks for your question. I’m glad you’ve subscribed. Take care. Joe.

    This video is better than Stihl's own video for using this sharpener. As a novice, I needed everything spelled out clearly. Much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Joe Pull the chain around to next tooth in the opposite direction to what you are doing in video ie away from power head - reduces the chance of cutting a finger on a tooth - great video.

    I did learn from this video - thank you. As others have noted, I prefer to just push to file, and not to drag the file back over the chain ready for the next stroke. I can hear the friction on your recovery stroke in the video and wonder if this is what is creating the burr you show at the end, no matter whether you do put more effort into the push stroke than the recovery stroke. I also note that in my view the 5 strokes you do in the first half is more than recommended by Stihl or my Stihl vendor; unless the edge is severely worn, 2 or 3 should suffice and if it's a regular maintenance event after a single cutting session, maybe just 1 is OK. I also note that you did five push strokes per link on the one side of the bar, and six on the other - better to keep to the same number. In Stihl videos they show how to lock the saw and then sharpen about 3 links; then unlock, move the chain around for the next 3, then lock again.. more efficient, less wear and tear on the brake. Thanks for the useful information in the video, I appreciated it.

      Thank you for your excellent comment. Yes I appreciate that. It should be equal strokes per side and yes, the fewer the better because obviously it creates more chain wear. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    I understood the arrow was intended to show the proper direction of filing -- push the tool in that direction with some downward pressure, then bring the file back without pressure. It appears you are applying downward pressure in both directions. Is that okay to do?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’re very observant. In a perfect world you really wouldn’t put any back pressure but for the sake of efficiency, I still do the file cuts best on a push stroke. It really really doesn’t cut much at all on the pole, but keeping it in contact with the tooth makes the push motion easier. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    Good video i have one recommendation tho i was always told not to drag a file backwards it dulls the file and most likely the chain I would assume also

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You make a good point. I understand that dragging the file backwards, particularly with significant force would doll the file but the files are hard and steel harder than the teeth so if you’re dragging it back like I tend to do with minimal pressure it’s probably OK. Good point consider subscribing. Thanks.Joe

    Very nice video. Thanks. I heard that this type of sharpener is not suitable for some type of chains, but as a novice I couldn't understand for which ones. Maybe you know what I am talking about and can explain more?

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your nice comment. You ask a good question. There are different size files for different size chain specifics. Some chains have a gullet that is 3/8 of an inch larger the majority probably the ones that you have are 3/8, which is by far the most common. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    Thought you was not supposed to go forward and backward on the tooth .....only forward direction

    • @JosephHunstad
      @JosephHunstad  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You make a good point and I appreciate your comment. Yes, in a perfect world you would file only going forward and not going back but these files are incredibly strong hardened and they can take this kind of abuse but ideally you’re correct so I recommend not doing that the way I did it, you know what they say do as I say not as I do. Consider subscribing. Thanks. Joe.

    Good video, 1 thing I would do differently would be when you have finished one tooth and moving onto the next tooth I would rotate the chain forwards instead of backwards like you did. Just because if the chain is too tight in the bar or something you could slip by applying to much pressure then you are pushing your fingers right into the freshly sharpened cutter teeth.

    I contacted Stihl and asked if the files could be replaced with different size files for different chain pitches too much they stated no. But much to my surprise you can’t even replace the original files once they wear out with the same size file. Below is exactly what they wrote. At $47 I will pass.
    “. Thank you for contacting STIHL Inc.
    Regarding your inquiry, we regret to inform you that the files in the STIHL 2-in-1 filing guides are set from the factory and cannot be removed/replaced.
    We maintain our availability for any further questions you might have.
    Kind regards,

      That is so incredibly disappointing to hear. Although the files are incredibly good, they’re hardened and they will probably last a long time they’re not gonna last forever. I am very disappointed. You can’t replace those files. I did not know that. Consider subscribing. Thanks.Joe

      @@JosephHunstad Hello Sir, please look at my follow up comment. Several people commented stating they thought I was wrong and I found it hard to believe what I received in writing from Stihl. So I called them. The rep said the exact opposite. The files can be replaced, but not with a different file size . The rep even provided me with part numbers for the flat and round files. I emailed Stihl back with what the rep said and they replied that they were very sorry for the incorrect information and yes, the files could in fact be replaced. I stated I was disappointed that Stihl would provide incorrect information about their own product. Sorry for posting misinformation, but I was only going by what I received from Stihl in writing.

    • @evdogg3247

      They can be replaced! I was just on Stihl’s website and I see the replacements under accessories. Check it out.
