I bought one of these when they first came out. Been running saws for firewood since early high school ( I'm 68 now) and this in my opinion is the best sharpener ever devised. I sharpen after each load is cut and maybe a fast touch up during the day. My chains always cut well!
Agree, these are great for the typical user. Love mine. One tip, occasionally pop the lid/cover and rotate the round files for a fresh cutting surface. Happy cutting!
You sir are OUTSTANDING! I bought one of these Stihl sharpeners several years ago and completely forgot how to use it. Loved the video and the level of detail you provided, and I now feel confident about keeping the chain sharp!
What an excellent demonstration and explanation. I am a 63 yr old woman and didn’t grow up around chain saws, etc. I now can sharpen my stihl electric chainsaw with confidence.
This is the most helpful video on this sharpener I’ve seen. Especially important to make sure the sharpener is for the right saw. I run 4 different saws and mistakenly used the wrong one once. It was not hard to tell it was the wrong one, because the sharpener didn’t help like normal. Turned out that once I got the right pitch sharpener, that solved the problem.
Minor experience with saw, recently got another one, hit some metal, watched this vid, bought the sharpener, followed your instructions, cutting again, thank you.
I own the same stihl file for my farm boss and love it. It takes a few minutes to get the hang of it if you are new to it and especially with a new chain the first few times you sharpen it. Biggest tip and what helps the most is if you can put the bar into a vice to hold it so you can use both hands on the file. If not then try to get someone to hold the chainsaw steady for you while you sharpen the chain. And also like you said to make sure you put some downward pressure while filing. They really dumbed it down to take all the guess work out of it. It always suprises me when i hear about how people hate the sharpner and can't get it to work right. But then again i know purple that have put the chain on backwards and wondered why it wouldn't cut....
This 2 in 1 sharpener is the single best tool I’ve bought for my chainsaw. I’ve used it for a few years now, and wonder how I ever did without one before! Especially when I’m out in the woods on a job. I would never be without one! The tool is absolutely priceless!
@@perrygienger1304 I just don't get why 4mm files are used to sharpen 3/8" chains when the teeth are little and the original original cutting edge and gullet was obviously created by a ~3mm mill. It seems there's jut no ideal tool for sharpening 3/8 chains.
For beginners/homeowners this is useful, also remember after using your saw for a period of time the chain gets hot so it expands when it cools it contracts so to save the chain from stretching loosen the two guard bolts a little and loosen the chain tensioner until there is a slight belly on the chain and remember to tighten back up before sawing again this will absolutely save your chains life span. Great video and an awesome tool, Sharp Chain Lives Matter
I carry a yellow paint pen to mark the first tooth that I sharpen since most of the factory markings wear off after a few trees. Also I took a black sharpie and darkened the markings on the sharpener to make them stand out a bit more, and I painted the housing on my other sharpner to let me know the file size without having to pick it up and read the fine print. I didn't like the set up each time I had to sharpen the saw so I began to look for an alternative method and it was then I ran across your You Tube channel. Nice video, thanks. I'm retired now, but for about 40 years, in my family tree service, we sharpened our chains every morning before heading out. We used a round file once around and came back with s flat file to knock down the guides. These 2 in 1 tools are nice, but I think I'm faster with the old method of sharpening, Recently I bought a Stihl MSA 120 C electric chainsaw (it's small) and my chain is a 1/4" STIHL PICCO. I bought one of these 2 in 1 sharpeners geared for that chain. To hold the saw while i sharpen it, i clamp it in a Yost 455 bench vise that I bolted to the rear step-up bumper of my golf chart - since the golf cart is near me when I'm cutting trees/limbs. Your video clearly shows which way to set the 2 in 1 tool on the chain, with the tool being small, I had to look carefully, but its turned out to be more of a "feel" technique. I paint the top of my starting tooth with a black magic marker. Also, got to keep it out of the dirt.

Excellent instructional video !!! The 3 previous YT videos that I watched on this sharpener were not clear and left me with questions. You addressed everyone of those and showed me a few new things too.
Just spent a day with the .325 file and also a 3/8P file. Sharpening 20 chains for my 028AV Super and 021. If you have a newer chain on your first sharpening it may take a little adjustment for this round file seating properly on the groove of the chisels. Once your chisels become accustomed to the file angle and groove it works better in succeeding times, almost a few minutes per chain. If you have chains that have already been sharpened and used in prior work this file works the best.
I take a bottle of white out and mark a start pt and I used a file to follow the angle of tooth and ever so often I trim off the depth gauge a little bit. After I do all one side effects then the other side
Thanks for the video. I like this this tool for all the reasons you mentioned. I found I was not putting enough down pressure to get the rakers filed down. I took the two rat files out, then used the tool to catch up on getting the rakers down.
Great job covering all the main points & potential mistakes using this all in one sharpener. Great way to save $$. The sharpener pays for itself after you’ve used it 3 times - 5 - 7 sharpening for free. I agree, chains are getting crazy expensive. Very useful video.
@@TKCL Do you ever chalk your files? Just curious. I started doing it to my files that I will not be able to readily clean out. Great tutorial and after years of just using a file and muscle memory I will be picking one of these up.
This sharpener is fantastic but I can’t believe that something so simple to use and effective has taken so long to get on the market. My saw and electric MAKITA, spits out chips all day as long as I take about 10 minutes to sharpen it.
I use a bar vise and with both hands on the file, I pull toward me( kinda like how you use a Japanese plane) of course you need to orient the file correctly. When you do it this way, you’ll hear how much your digging in
This video is the best explanation of how to use this chainsaw sharpener! Do you have a suggestion on how to use a Sthl on the Alligator chainsaw. The chain does not rotate on the saw like the larger chainsaws. Thank you in advance. Keep up the good work!
I think it pays by itself in a couple uses, just by saving you time having a nice sharp chain cutting the wood faster, in safety avoiding kickback, saving gas or electricity (electric chainsaws), etc... A chain cost is the slowest ROI but it is also important. Thank you for sharing!
I enjoy my combined stihl sharper. I only find one little disadvantage. IT Makes the chain a little bit agressive ( cut the gauges to much) If I do a borecut in the wood it jumps to much, because of that I sometimes only use the round file.
Great video. I've also got one of these, and the guy at my Stihl shop said these are idiot proof, and I managed to work it out, it's that simple! I'm an intermediate chainsaw user... I know enough to get by, and nowhere near at your level... But a couple of my own tips to pass on - 1: instead of replacing the files, just rotate them in the sharpener by 90⁰ before you use it each time, so that all faces of the files get worn and used. 2: You don't need to mark your starter tooth. You'll find most chains have a "double link". That is, two teeth in a row that face the same way. I was blown away when I was told, and when I checked mine, sure enough, there was that double link. They're the teeth I start at.
I bought one of these when they first came out. Been running saws for firewood since early high school ( I'm 68 now) and this in my opinion is the best sharpener ever devised. I sharpen after each load is cut and maybe a fast touch up during the day. My chains always cut well!

BEST video about this sharpener! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Very good explanation of how to do it right thanks
Hey thanks a lot! This helped us getting going quicker today
Glad it helped!
Great video, one good point is -listening - to your cutting action with the file to know if your doing it correctly.
Andrew, that’s an awesome tool. Got me a new tool in my future.😊 Thanks for the review and introduction to this simple but effective sharpener.
Been working great for me all these years. I'll never not own one.
I hand file all my chains and develop the profiles I think work best. In the field I use this Stihl sharpener to touch up whenever I refuel.
This is incredibly helpful- you’re a fantastic teacher! Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome video! lots of info and heaps of help! keep up the good work!
Glad it helped!
i also use these , they are really great to have with you in the woods
I take a bottle of white out and mark a start pt and I used a file to follow the angle of tooth and ever so often I trim off the depth gauge a little bit. After I do all one side effects then the other side
Fantastic review. I have the MS250 with a .325". I'm getting this
Love my sharpeners
You’re a legend! Thank you.
Great video, solved a few items for me. Thank you
Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it
@@TKCL Do you ever chalk your files? Just curious. I started doing it to my files that I will not be able to readily clean out. Great tutorial and after years of just using a file and muscle memory I will be picking one of these up.
No I never have tried this.
best tool made in years
Love mine
This sharpener is fantastic but I can’t believe that something so simple to use and effective has taken so long to get on the market. My saw and electric MAKITA, spits out chips all day as long as I take about 10 minutes to sharpen it.
I use a bar vise and with both hands on the file, I pull toward me( kinda like how you use a Japanese plane) of course you need to orient the file correctly. When you do it this way, you’ll hear how much your digging in
Awesome video. Very detailed information. I need to get two of these. Thank you for this video it's very helpful. Take care.
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely the best sharpening tool ever. Just make sure that you are filing in the right direction. From the inside out. (not covered in video)
True
Great video! I use my saw
This is the clearest I don't need a clamp etc Out in the forest So clear
This video is the best explanation of how to use this chainsaw sharpener! Do you have a suggestion on how to use a Sthl on the Alligator chainsaw. The chain does not rotate on the saw like the larger chainsaws. Thank you in advance. Keep up the good work!
I'm not familiar with that saw, sorry.
On stihl saws they also stamp the file size on the chain if you can't find it anywhere else
Thanks for this video. You explained it perfectly and answered my questions. Good job!👏👍😎
Glad it was helpful!
I think it pays by itself in a couple uses, just by saving you time having a nice sharp chain cutting the wood faster, in safety avoiding kickback, saving gas or electricity (electric chainsaws), etc... A chain cost is the slowest ROI but it is also important. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for watching
Thanks for the video, great video… best explanation on how to use it.
Glad you enjoyed it
Superb instruction. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hello from Live Oak! Very good explanation.
Hello there! Thanks for watching
I enjoy my combined stihl sharper. I only find one little disadvantage. IT Makes the chain a little bit agressive ( cut the gauges to much) If I do a borecut in the wood it jumps to much, because of that I sometimes only use the round file.
Hey Andrew...How and where do you order replacement files for each sharpener?
Great video with excellent content. I will mow buy this sharpener and put it to good use. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for posting sir. Central Oregon
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video.
