First tutorial I've seen that shows a top-down view of how to get the correct sharpening angle. Thank you!

Bought one of these sharpeners recently. After 2 sharpenings my saw cuts better than ever before. Don't try and push too hard and try not to hurry, just file fairly lightly and be aware of the angles and you will be on a winner. I have been using saws for over 50 years and this makes sharpening dead easy.

Thank you for zooming in so we can see how it actually rides on the bar! Even Stihl couldn’t show an up close video. Great job!

Thanks for your video. I watched 10 others and none of them were helpful, to understand how to position the tool. Your explanation and closeup footage made it clear.

Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Close up was a big help. Just purchased 2 in 1 and want to get it right.

Brilliant tutorial, thanks for this as I was doing it wrong also, trying to sharpen the other way round pushing the file towards the front of the blade which you do with the other less sophisticated kit

The 2 lines on the guide bars in the middle are to help you maintain the proper angle, you didn’t mention them

Around 2:10 I think he reference the lines

Hi, good review. Getting the angle right, without a guide, is a challenge. The guide keeps both sides sharpened at the right angle and keeps the saw from cutting a curve. I have been using a MS 170 (16" bar) for about 8 years, and have used it to take down a dozen ash trees, up to 100 ft height., 28" diameter.

Use the far end on the chain 1st. Line that up first then start your stroke.

Thanks for this, I think it’ll help me too. I’ve been using the 2 in 1 on my little 201tc and my own 261c and been getting mediocre results, as you said. It looks like you (at first) and I are doing it the same exact way. Been wondering what I’m doing wrong and what that graphic on the tool is supposed to be telling me other than “angle it 30*” haha. Gonna try this soon as I get back outside.

maybe you you could draw a line on your vice to show you the angle when the handle isn't near the bar

It takes a bit of practice to get it right. My advice would be practice on old chain first when your a beginner, rather that tearing into a new chain. Good video.

You're right. The marker lines on the guide rods ARE in the wrong position as you're showing in the beginning of your video. I own the exact same file for my MS170. And I checked on my file. Same story. All the other markers on the file are in the correct spot, just the two lines on one end on one side are wrong. Strange. It's definately best to use the plastic edge as a guide.

Sebastian Berger It drove me crazy. I was eating chain and thinking I had a good edge. The difference is night and day after you get it right.

The square guide bar is back to front... Or the stamping is wrong. Simple as that. Of course its the handle angle which is correct. Best hand tool I've ever used in my life and right next to the original Nebraskan Petersen vice grips.

  • @Scooter110
    @Scooter110 ปีที่แล้ว

I think there's something wrong with the guide bar markings on your 2 in 1. I have one and the markings on the guide bars match the the angle of the handles exactly. Maybe the bars are the wrong way around?

when used correctly (with so many other things!) this thing really is effective, and its a good idea to use common sense, duh! , u look at the tooth and line it in conjunction with tht , instead of being lost in the tools confusing marks, indicators....its like using a gps when goin to the nearest supermarket (is it really necessary??! lol)
u know it by lookin at the road and memory, so naturally...but no in getting a gadget u dont understand u end up in the woods so to say , LOL!!

I have 3 saws and they using different size chains, can we change the file on this tool? Or I have to buy one tool specific for each size chain and also when the file goes bad can we change it?

    • @honestdad8944

I really don’t know. I have two saws myself and just bought one for each to always have it ready.

I had the same query (As my first & currently only '2 in 1' is for 3/8" Pico chains & wanted to use it on a larger saw with a .325" pitch chain) but when you think about it logically, one of the (several different) ways the tool works is by having the metal support rails sitting on top of the teeth/cutters on either side of the tooth/cutter you're sharpening. Obviously, different chain 'pitches' result in different spacing between the teeth/cutters, so (In addition to different file sizes) the support/guide rails on the wrong-sized tool would probably not sit flat across the teeth on either side of the one you're sharpening, therefore resulting in sharpening errors? I just ordered an additional tool for one of my (larger) saws which uses a different chain pitch to my smaller saws & will be able to verify this (Or not?!) once it arrives!
Yes. You can replace the files & 'Stihl' sell replacement file kits.

@@stevekramer8849 Heya! Can you verify one way or the other? I'm in a similar position with a 1/4"P and a 3/8"P chainsaw. Would be great if I could just get two sets of files and swap when needed. Thanks!

My advice for first time user's would be to sharpen one tooth then use the sharpener to check the angle. With time you'll be sharpening at the correct angle. It just takes some practice.
