The Yonaguni Death Trials

  • Sorry for the late launch. Yesterday, we accidentally released the video early for a second. That caused TH-cam notifications to be sent out then but not now when the video launched at the correct time. We decided to re-upload.
    This is a story of sacrifice. And taxes.
    I'm not gonna lie, I'm not super happy with it as I was with some of the others this season. It's an interesting story, just not fully captured. Maybe if I'd had more than 5 hours to spend after the strep throat issues, but alas.
    Either way, those poor mothers. Not exactly egalitarian on further reflection. It's strongitarian. Agrarian. Pretty nasty, really.
    One more from Yonaguni before we head back to Okinawa honto! Our next episode is about an extremely remote conspiracy theory that I had to scuba dive to see. It was fun.

    I got to be honest, I don't really understand why people hate taxes. Taxes are used to pay for our roads, amongst a plethera of other things we use every day that only a government can afford to build.

    • @lucasbattistella5400
      @lucasbattistella5400 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ah, its easy to understand. If you pay a lot and see no return you hate having to pay.
      Imagine how much the founding fathers hated the british taxation and the situation they were in. Their money was being drained even more from the colonies to fund the reconstruction of the mainland after a war they had no interest in taking part what so ever.
      Imagine paying 53% of your yearly income in taxes (adding every thing up) and get to use a dirt road full of potholes, bad quality healthcare, bad water management and treatment, close to no criminal repression, bad education. All of that when the state claims that all that money you gave them was to fund these. But instead they are funding the maintenance of a 130 yo french battleship turned into an aircraft carrier to "Project Power abroad" or in another example, building a huge naval powerhouse of a port, but in another country with little to no interest.
      Its how he says in the end of the video "you gotta see the bang for you buck"

    • @phineas7423
      @phineas7423 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lucasbattistella5400 that would be a problem with the government then, not the taxes themselves. Ans also just because you dont see where the taxes aren't going doesn't mean that they aren't going to a good cause. Jobs created by building the port in another country could have lifted hundreds out of poverty if managed right. Dirt roads with potholes suck, and the aircraft carier is pointless, but projects created and funded by taxes still help people even if they don't help you.

    • @shiinakochiya6068
      @shiinakochiya6068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Phineas Just a side note - the technology itself for an aircraft carrier isn't useless, it's just how our society uses it that's problematic. Imagine for example - however unlikely it might be in our current society - an aircraft carrier (or amphibious assault ship (basically a helicopter carrier), perhaps with a changed name lol) used to provide firefighting assistance, or search-and-rescue and relief operations after a disaster.
      The question of whether taxes/resources would be most efficiently spent on such an aircraft carrier versus more directly on relevant issues is not one I have an answer to, though.

    I like taxes, they're the cost of investing in and maintaining a good society. I don't like poor use of taxes. But when governments don't use the money well the solution isn't to reduce taxes, the solution is to increase transparency and accountability of the taxes use. To reduce spending on things that don't work and increase spending on things that do work while simultaneously being understanding that there are problems that we don't know the answer to yet and so the spending will not bring immediate results. For issues where trial and error are needed, spending the taxes isn't a waste so long as solutions are systematically being tested and filtered out.

Even taxes. Or, maybe that's MY pills talking. I love your videos and I find them an essential part of my otherwise challenging life. Your perspective is very valuable, even if it is often brought through an olive drab to grey filter. That slant is all a part of that whole. Hang on to that all pervasive Big Picture if you can. Hey! I have been a fan since the very beginning. Perhaps you can do a season of your show in a region of Spain called Galicia. Its a very unique and beautiful place. The culture is like a mix of Spanish and Portuguese -- and the history goes back to pre-roman Celtic societies. From the Celtic origins, to the unification of Spain and the reconquista, to Portuguese influences, to Galician drug smuggling, to catholic pilgrimages -- I think there would be a lot to talk about. Next year 4.4 million in America SW have no water. The aquifer in the heartland is bone dry so no crops. Will they all move north? How will that go? Will they decommission all thier oil wells and fracking waste sites, the Uranium ore mines? How many military bases will need to be closed? What dominoes we can't imagine will be put in play?
