  • I didn't expect much from San Marino. Even filming this episode I was a little annoyed with how little I could find worth telling.
    But this story entertained me, and Kata edited it beautifully. I'm super happy with how it turned out. I hope you all enjoy!

      " Stay neutral " if by which you mean neutral in the face of neighbours being invaded by a hostile foreign power , an atrocity- intended totalitarian empire , could be a very motivated political message , not neutral at all in the non- biased use of the term. The main public message of elite Nazi collaborators in England in the 30s was " stay neutral " , while the records of their internal fascist correspondence show they planned to welcome Hitler and to liquidate the who opposed them and their families.
      Rare earth , you don't actually make your own positions transparent. For example , How do you feel about The Chinese Communist Party ?

      That reminds me of a section of one of the books from the Chronicles of Narnia I read as a kid about what usually gets prioritized for recording in history.
      I forget which book, but they return to Narnia and many centuries have passed, and the narration said something like “there were centuries of peace so little is remembered or written of much of that history”.
      That idea always stuck with me because it’s rather true.

      @@bliebbloepblieb Actually it does. There are a lot of places where communism works in small villages, little rural communities etc. The same applies to a lot of things really, like isolated religious communities. They have their own system and are perfectly fine with it.
      The biggest problem with communists is when they decide that the entire country should adopt their way. Then, they take arms, kill or send to prison all the opposition and install a totalitarian regime to "keep the revolution alive", justifying all atrocities as "necessary acts against the enemies of the people".

      @waltermh111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@HaganeNoGijutsushi But that would be the wrong point because it isnt keeping their head down that worked, it is that their land isnt worth conquering, and I doubt the original settlers thought of that when they settled there. They simply settled for the same reason people settle anywhere, it was a place they could survive or at least that was untouched at the time.
      Sure, not wanting to expand keeps that purpose, but they had nothing to gain by it anyway. Reality isnt as glorious as his dreamy story makes it out to be.

    • @waltermh111
      @waltermh111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I wanted to clarify the slight misrepresentation of history made in this video for why they didnt want to expand.
      This is why
      "Thanks to his intervention, Napoleon, in a letter delivered to Gaspard Monge, scientist and commissary of the French Government for Science and Art, promised to guarantee and protect the independence of the Republic, even offering to extend its territory according to its needs. The offer was declined by the Regents, fearing future retaliation from other states' revanchism.[13][14]"
      There was a war going on and they feared retaliation. It wasnt some pacifistic future thinking plan to keep their little country safe for eternity. It was as I said, they didnt have much to gain, and a lot to lose.
      And it was only due to one regent, not a country decision so much, though I assume the country went with his guidance, but he navigated them through the war very well. They were very small at the time after all.

    • @HaganeNoGijutsushi
      @HaganeNoGijutsushi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@waltermh111 I mean "be inconsequential" also in that sense, that their land wasn't worth much. Though obviously that possibly wasn't the original reason for the choice, by the 1700s when the Napoleon offer came they probably were very aware of it and realised that stepping up their game also meant drawing unwarranted attention.

Just because one thing works doesn't mean the other doesn't, and I bet you're the sort of person who ignores any facts about the benefits of multiculturalism. The problem comes in when others try to decide your needs vs wants for you - and make all their decisions based on everyone wanting more than they need (like them). That's why there is such a poverty problem throughout this world... something that in many ways is not that old in the history (or pre-history) of humanity, by the way. The modern experience of poverty is only a few hundred years old - and having poorer people vs relatively wealthy goes back only a few thousand years, with the rise of social stratification.
      I am quite impressed with San Marino, but wonder about their social structures. If it's as egalitarian as I suspect, I'd like to visit someday.

    First and FOREMOST... great video as always.
    One minor nitpick that, in my book, is slightly more than minor. Not quite medium, but not minor. And I'll present my academic knowledge and ask your hands-on experience says that I need to change my view.
    San Marino isn't a city-state by classic definitions. I was having an hours-long academic debate on nations and I said "not including city-states like Monaco and San Marino" to which my academic partner said "San Marino isn't a city-state."
    After about two hours of wonderful research, I have to agree. Sure, it seems like it at first class, but San Marino has quite a few towns and the urban areas are far from contiguous. Wikipedia (and book sources I went to) list between 7 and 10 municipalities (my book sources are pretty old, that's the most likely reason for the discrepancy). There are plenty more parishes (curacies), but of course you can have plenty of those in a city state. The municipalities, on the other hand, lend credence to the idea that SM isn't a *proper* city-state.
    It may be the world's smallest sovereign multi-town nation.
    I know you respond to some of your comments. If you don't re: to this, I won't be let down at all, but if you DO re:, it'll definitely make my week.
    Also, on the list of places I'm envious of you for having made it to, San Marino is pretty damned high.

    • @roguishpaladin
      @roguishpaladin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Scott Laux They also had very imprecise definitions and lots of client relations. OP's point is that, in modern times, we have a definition of city-state. Monaco, as an example, satisfies that by literally being one city. San Marino has more than that one city and there is an area within it defined as a city.
      Here's more reading for you: www.thoughtco.com/what-is-a-city-state-4689289

    • @yondie491
      @yondie491 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Scott Laux It's like what The Jarric said, it still needs that one large central city.
      San Marino is NOT "one big city w/ some suburbs"
      The capital has 4K people. The largest town has 7K people. I made this image from Google Earth comparing San Marino and Monaco, a classic city-state, using nearly exactly the same camera-eye elevation: imgbox.com/PbcdrSBI
      Here are the divisions of the nation in terms of population density:
      Acquaviva - 1k/sqmi
      Borgo Maggiore - 2k/sqmi
      Chiesanuova - 0.5/sqmi
      Domagnano - 1.3/sqmi
      Faetano - 0.4/sqmi
      Fiorentino - 1/sqmi
      Montegiardino - 0.8/sqmi
      Serravalle - 2.5/sqmi
      That's fairly spread out. A good collection of what I'd call rural towns. It's not just the lack of "yup, that's a city" density anywhere, it's also the lack of a singular municipality that dominates the suburbs/small towns.
      Monaco and The Vatican are obviously city-states because they're singular cities. Andorra is a city-state because the national population density isn't much (0.5k/sqmi) but a full THIRD live in the capital... and the capital's density is a solid 4.5k/sqmi. Basically 30% of the people live in 11% of the land. That's dominating.
      Outside of Europe, I don't think anyone would argue that Singapore is not a city-state.
      This is all opinion of course, but I'd put San Marino is with nations like Malta and Nauru.

    I agree with the Economist magazine when it argued that nations should adopt some form of the Swiss cantonal system. Cantons would regulate public education and socialised medicine, and would have substantial taxation powers. Each canton would set its public policy regarding controversial topics, such as abortion. Nations would be loose federations of cantons, with cantons enjoying the right of secession. A nation would be defined as a collection of cantons with a common currency and a common immigration policy.

You make complex subjects sometimes easier to understand (if possible) and experiences that are something that you might not ever get to have achievable. The Republic of San Marino wasn't a democracy throughout its entire history. In fact, it probably wasn't what we would consider democratic at all until 1906. Between 1600 and 1906, the Grand and General Council chose its own members through co-optation; there were no elections at all, which actually put San Marino far behind pretty much all other European countries. San Marino's original governing Assembly; the Arengo, was only composed of Noble families and not all citizens.

      Sort of. Yeah both systems heave two heads of state, but at least the Roman Republic had relatively popular elections for their Consuls (albeit weighted towards wealthy voters), which is something San Marino has never done. Sure San Marino is a normal democratic republic now, but I think its just a stretch to say its "always been that way".
