  • I'm a freak. I have a hitchhikers thumb and I'm colourblind. Protect me, I am the promise of the future.
    Fun fact: I filmed the a-roll of this episode with a 103 degree fever, as was unfortunately the case with about half the episodes this season. The bloopers are pretty much just me throwing up off camera.
    A special thanks to all our patrons who held strong throughout the break.

      There are more than a few scenes where you can see the shaky cam. They need to get a gimbal of some sorts to stabilize the camera if they want to do walk-ups like they did in the opening shot. I also have a sneaking suspicion that a bunch of the shots weren't properly color corrected on site, which is why some of the B-roll looks washed out/grainy. Either way, it's good content with a good message - but he wasn't kidding when he said some of that footage was rough.

      They had a new camera man. Their last one left to work for some famous Italian photographer in Italy. It's all in their last video he tells you what happened.

    • @RareEarthSeries
      @RareEarthSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@G_L_J We have a gimbal. You see it used a dozen times in this ep. But you can't always use it (safety), and it isn't always a reasonable addition (shot). Plus, if you don't know how to use a gimbal the footage will still shake. That's just how it is I'm afraid.

    I didn't even notice anything about the camera work until I read about you filming at the end. If the following videos are of similar quality then that's just fine with me. Even if there was a noticable drop in visual quality (which there wasn't) I'd still be just as interested because I watch to hear your thoughts and brilliant narration. Keep it up; you're doing the kinds of things I wish I could.

    Years ago when I subscribed to the youtube channel of an astronaut, I never expected this same channel to turn into one of the very gems of youtube. These last months I haven't had the time to watch a lot of videos and I am now going back to your videos I have missed, and I am just in awe at the quality and poetry of them. Not only do we learn by watching your videos, we are also deeply touched by the narration, carried away by your storytelling until at the end, when the video stops, we are left daydreaming, thinking about the subject, and to see it from a different eye.
    Thank you for this. It is truly rare earth.

    Wow. I saw the Newfoundland season as some of the first dying breaths of Rare Earth; and with the long hiatus I thought that the end had come. But I am in love with this first new episode. I think the writing is easy to understand, but satisfyingly poetic. I think the topic is important. I think Somaliland is an exciting location. I think this is a wonderful potential rebirth of the show. I am still a huge fan of the walk and talk that you did in Japan, and I would love to see you return to that style. But with regards to writing, I think you are already hitting the mark again. Thank you for everything that you do. I am excited to see you grow and evolve.

    This video was fascinating! I've learnt a lot about human evolution over the years but there were some very simple points you made, specifically about the growth of our heads vs the narrowing of our hips causing problems in child birth resulting in earlier child birth.
    One observation I have to this is: was this the beginning of maternal instincts? Of our offspring couldn't take care of themselves from birth and they needed to be cared for if they hoped to survive, a bond between mother and child would need to be formed. This would then result to emotional bonds and love.
    I absolutely love your channel, you do such unique and amazing work.

    From a Danish documentary one a person with severe cerebral palsy performing a sci-fi stage play (paraphrased):
    "I know you don't want me to exist. I know that soon, people like me will no longer have a place in this world. All I know is that when I am gone, you will lose the empathy I now force you to have."

    I just discovered your channel and have become addicted to it. Along with the TNT hunting rats this is one of your best videos. TH-cam needs channels like this. Good luck and don't stop.

    I'm incredibly excited you're doing a season on Ethiopia. I remember watching Rare Earth years ago and thinking you should come to Ethiopia, so it's very cool to see it now. I can't wait to see the next few videos.
