Everyone with depression can relate to this on a deep personal level... while watching this video on their phone, while lying in an unmade bed eating ice cream with a fork.

Right? Anyone who hasn't been there might think this bit is a commentary on "laziness." Without even knowing this man, I immediately knew he has to be relating living day-to-day with depression. I've definitely eaten my fair share of ice cream with a fork LOL

Actually I thought the same thing when I first watched his new one. But once I watched it a few more times, it's really grown on me. I'm not sure how I'd rank them myself, both have really great moments. In This Economy is really consistently funny throughout the whole special, though.

I can soooo relate. Never dealt with depression or went thru it til my husband of 22 years asked for a divorce while we were at the beach celebrating. We were walking our dogs when he "told" me and all i could think of was to tell my aged King Scotty Dog to "bite him". I didn't as i was in shock. He had no reason why. When i moved in with my widowed girlfriend of 30 years...i slept in her basement(with Edward...my Scotty dog).I slept fully dressed in my uniform, hat, winter coat, sock and shoes. And ....around my clean and dry clothes that lay for weeks on the bed. Instead of ice cream, it was whiskey and coke for alot of weeks. So Gary, i can relate. BUT it does get better as time goes by. PS...ten years later, he begged me to take him back...said all the women he dated were flat out crazy.

Damn, he's one of my favorite comedians, but this is a wild set to revisit after everything he revealed last year about his depression. On one hand, it's great that he was able to convert it to comedy in situations like this, but on the other hand, it's terrifying to think about what he was actually going through personally at the time of this set (especially since I relate to several aspects of the set). I'm very glad he was able to get the help he needed to work on his depression, and hopefully he will continue to grow and thrive as a comedian.

@ of course it is... Let's say everyone got aids, would you say "is it aids if everyone has it"? No you wouldn't, unless you're an idiot taken to a new level of stupidity.
And as said, FAR from everyone has it, the world would go under way quicker than it is now if everyone did. People are also dumb enough to say they're depress or whatever when they are just down for the moment. That really undermines true depression which sucks, so few people even come close to understanding what real depression is.

I first watched him on his bit about having a meltdown in Trader Joe's and been looking for his other performances since then.

Interesting. These aren't so much jokes as discerning observation. The comedy/humor is that the specifics cited are SO revelatory & commonly experienced by a contemporary audience.

I literally discovered this guy about 5 days ago...by randomly stumbling upon this very video from years ago.
But I found it funny enough to dig into Gary Gulman more....and wow, he's an interesting person. He's this very tall charismatic handsome man....who also suffers from crippling depression. Or at least used to...his The Great Depresh special is amazing. I just saw a really interesting interview with Gary here (th-cam.com/video/7a-MUcEH3DA/w-d-xo.html) where he mentioned this exact appearance on Colbert and how he was in the depths of his depression during it.
Anyway....he's worth looking into, this Gary guy. He's pretty smart and aware...which no doubt factored into his depression in the first place. But the interview I linked to is pretty inspiring. It really seems like he's gotten to a really good place in his mind and life. It's pretty cool to see.
