In one episode regnar talks to the seer asks about his sons. The seer tells regnar of the greatness ahead for his sons... Son is said explicitly several times. And the seer says it was of Bjorn he was speaking. Therefore I think Rollo is wrong
The seer was right. Ivar and Bjorn turned out to be two his greatest sons. Ivar is the most famous and accomplished viking of them all, so the Seer clearly had them both in mind when he said son(s) in the plural.
Your also missing one key point the seer also said that his visions are interpretations of what the gods write meaning he can be wrong remember his conversation with ragnar before he died he said he could have been wrong about a great many things
@@QuEsT_X true, but like everything with this show even that is debatable considering the seer on the wagon was Ragnar's hallucination of the seer projected onto the blind man rather than the physical seer. Also Ragnar was still convinced he was the ruler of his own fate at this time, so it makes sense that his hallucination would speak in this way, especially since he still had yet to be seen by a blind man (which happened immediately after)

"You are not important enough for me to care." Notice how for a good amount of their conversation, Bjorn does not look Rollo in the eye. In many cases, refusing to look someone in the eye is seen as a sign of weakness. However, in this case, it's the opposite. Rollo is not important enough to have Bjorn's full attention. The few times that he does look Rollo in the eye is when he declares Ragnar as his father or refers to him as such.
So, just in this case, it is the opposite? Na, Bjorn was the son of Rollo and his attitude it's like a little child who doesn't wany to understand the complex of the world. He is weak but tries to act all strong because that is all what he knows to do.
If people look you in the eye, they're trying to measure up to you and prove something to you; want respect. Looking someone in the eye doesn't make something real or a fact. Never stoop to their level or play their game, and focus on yourself.

Odin appeared to Bjorn the same way he appeared to the other sons of Ragnar and there are two ways of interpreting this. the first, that Bjorn is and has always been Ragnar's son. and the second is that even Bjorn being the son of Rollo, Ragnar loved him as his son, his blood, and Odin recognized it. Bjorn loved his father, not his uncle, even when he was angry or disagreeing with him and his actions. And that's more important to me than anything else. After all, he and his brothers are Ragnar's legacy.
There is only one argument against this and it is a flimsy one at best. That Odin went Ragnar’s sons, but blood is not what is important but rather the relationship.

Bjorn is faced with the exact same temptation Rollo was, is in a vastly worse position than Rollo was in, and he doesn't even have to kill his own countrymen to get power the way Rollo did, but he still refuses to abandon his people. He truly is Ragnar's son.

Alexander Ludwig did a phenomenal job here and through out the series. You can really see him being Ragnars son. From the way he acts and talks. Great acting in this show that the new vikings will never compare.
I think the writers took creative freedom with writing him as son of Rollo, to show the character progression that Ragnar was able to make an element of Rollo into a better man, the man Ragnar always wanted his brother to be. In the end Bjorn was a legendary fighter like Rollo, so much that he was 'the man that could not be killed', but is unquestionably a son of Ragnar through nurture
I've just finished this series in whole. As much as I was over the moon to see Floki in the very end, I was also hoping to see Rollo make an appearance too. I guess at this point was the last time we were gonna see him.
Why would they even make this scene, Bjorn has always been Ragnar's Son, the seer said it in his prophecy and Odin appeared to Bjorn and he asked hvitserk if he heard it too. Also in real history, Bjorn is Ragnar's Son

I've been rewatching Vikings recently. In season 3 episode 4 (Sacred, around min 38), when Vikings are staying at King Ecbert Villa, Lagertha talks to Rollo and she gives a hint that Bjron is Rollo's son.

Many actually suspected this to be true from Season 1, due to a scene with Lagertha and Rollo. They say (like Bjorn), that Rollo was always a great fighter and it was unnatural for Bjorn to be so much taller than Ragnar and to not have inherited so much of Ragnar's intelligence. Personally I think it would have been better if they added more hints to it in earlier seasons. For it to have come up so late into the series made it pointless.

In terms of physical features he seems to resemble Rollo more. I mean he's big, tall and muscular. In contrast Ragnar as well as his other sons (except maybe for Ivar) are shorter and more slender and thin and not necessarily so muscular.
I don't think Rollo actually believed Bjorn was his son. I think he missed his brother and his nephew was the closest thing to both his brother and his firstborn son. Rollo is full of regret and had time to think about everything.
I feel like people completely take this seen wrong. It's not about who Bjorns father is, it's about Rollo's nature. One of the key elements of the dichotomy between the brothers is Rollo's coveting tendencies. He wanted his brother's life, wife, reputation, titles, prestige, etc. The actor playing rollo said that his arc that whole season was about coming to terms with himself as a man because he is feels as if he is still stuck in Ragnars shadow. I believe even this scene is an extension of that.
I don't think any of those three are definitive proof. Ragnar did not know the truth or did not want to know it (he knew that Rollo and Lagertha had a thing at some point though). Lagertha always played along with Bjorn being Ragnars Son anyway, she said just that to Rollo in this scene. And the Seer tends to tell people only what they ask for, while keeping a lot of things secret. Ragnar never asked wether or not Bjorn is his son. He just assumed Bjorn is his son when talking to the Seer, and the Seer just answers the question as it is given to him. So when Ragnar asks about the future of his sons (including Bjorn), the Seer would just go along with Ragnars belief that Bjorn is his son, potentially. Or he would answer only for his biological sons without naming any names, but since he did mention Bjorn in that context as one of Ragnars sons, I would assume he just went along with Ragnars assumption and belief, rather than answer a question that was not asked of him. Also, Ragnar was more of a father to Bjorn than Rollo was, just influence wise and who he grew up with as a father-figure, and in that sense, Ragnar is definitely Bjorns father. I think more important to answer the question would be, who did they cast as Bjorn. And they went with someone who has clearly Rollos physique, while all other Sons of Ragnar are smaller. If you compare Ubbe and Bjorn for example, they clearly look as different as Ragnar and Rollo, when it comes to their physique. Rollo was massive, and so is Bjorn. Even though Aslaugh was bigger than Lagherta, all of her sons are smaller than Bjorn. Of course genetically that can be explained by recessive genes, maybe Lagherthas Father was also really big, and it hopped a generation. Or well, Ragnar and Rollo are also brothers, but potentially also different fathers there, otherwise there is definitely some recessive genes going around. But usually when it comes to casting in a TV-Show, they will go with a more direct approach to genetics. So I am sure that he is supposed to be Rollos biological son. And the show also hinted at that before. Pretty much from the get go with the fact that Rollo and Lagertha had a thing at least once and Bjorn is already born a while ago. And in another conversation between Rollo and Lagertha in Season 3. It might all just be to raise the idea that he is Rollos son, for people to speculate about, but I think they intended him to be Rollos biological son.

The seer tells him and Ragnar then asks about Bjorn and the Seer tells him that is who he was talking about. And Ragnar even told this later to Bjorn. And the Seer was right. See this is what happens to people when their families and relationships break. -Lagertha killed Aslaug even knowing she is not exactly at fault but Lagertha could not help blaming Aslugh because she was too hurt to admit that Ragnar chose another woman over her because she could not give him children. - Then Rollo, whose heartbreak might have made him betray his brother but also led him to having great things for himself. Then that same heartbreak wolked him right where he left , in thought of taking care of people he loves. BTW, I don't think Rollo was wrong to leave Ragnar either. Ragnar took his woman and Rollo still called him his brother for so many years. Living in Ragnar's shade forever would have been very humiliating when in fact, Ragnar took much from Rollo.
The series doesn't show how Lagertha met Ragnar and Rollo so you can't say she was Rollo's woman. I bet Ragnar never knew Rollo and her had something in the past. Maybe they slept together but were never together. Ragnar is not like Rollo, he would never sleep with his brother's woman. No doubt Rollo would.
I wish they could have just made rollo state that he’s ashamed of badly he betrayed his brother and wanted to make it right. The seer told Ragner about Bjorne future…the seer stated Bjorn was ragners.
Also anyone notice how rollo dare not mention this till ragnar was dead lol. Man did not know what honor was like ragnar did if he didn't at least 2 times rillo would of been dead. Had he not saved rollo.
This is one of those scenes where I wish they'd made adjustments but kept the bulk. Have it where Rollo says something along the lines of 'I trained you Bjorn, I was with you throughout your childhood, you are as much a son to me as you are to Ragnar', putting that point across but not actually pushing the idea that he genuinely is Rollo's son. Then include Bjorn's response. I seriously like the dialogue and acting that comes out of this scene but given the context the idea is laughable and absurd this late in the game.
Yes, especially since they did a great job in earlier seasons in portraying the relationship between the two. You could feel they were very close regardless of biological kinship so there was no point in adding the detail of supposed paternity
The writers putting this into the story really ruined my view of Lagertha. I mean after Ragnar cheated I didn't blame her for going out there but to imply she had a thing going with Rollo at the height of her relationship with Ragnar really made her look bad
The show always suggested she was seeing them both or Rollo first, but ultimately chose Ragnar. Girl was just having a good time and didnt exactly know who fathered her son. At least it was only 2 dudes, in Mama Mia it's 3!
He's trying to overact like Ragnar because he knows he's not really his son. and because, biologically speaking, he could never hope to live up to the man. it's just not in his genes.
This was all really bad writing. Part of me also wants to say that Rollo was playing both sides for his own benefit. He has only his wife and sons in Normandy, so giving his nephew and Lagertha a home there would be a way to keep whatever family he had in Kattegat close. He helped out Ivar because he really doesn't care what happens to his former home. After all, Ragnar was always the more ambitious of the two. Rollo only cared about Lagertha and Bjorn, so keeping what was important to him, and discarding the rest is what he wanted to achieve here. Still, I say it's very bad writing. Michael Hirst has gotten very sloppy. Ivar being carted off to the east? The real Ivar Ragnarsson was one of the first Viking Kings in Ireland. Why not explore that? When Bjorn went to the middle East, he was informed that they weren't the first Norsemen to visit. Many Swedes sailed down to the Byzantine empire and found work as bodyguards for the Emperor. Imagine one of the other sons of Ragnar becoming a commander of the Varangians? That would be more interesting than having this ongoing war between Bjorn and Ivar, while the other brothers are relegated to underlings. The real sons of Ragnar are turning in their graves.

I think people are missing the point of the scene. What Bjorn is saying, is that he's a true son of Ragnar even if he's not his blood son. Ragnar was his father, Ragnar raised and Ragnar cared Rolo didn't care about anyone but himself and maybe his actual blood children, that he knows. Yeah he always cared for Bjorn but not in the way of a father. Now I don't know how the Norse saw it but to me you don't have to be related to someone by Blood for them to be your father they just have to be there for you as a father. So it's irrelevant if Rollo is his blood father. He is still Bjorn ragnarsson.
It's bad writing, plain and simple. It obviously didn't work, and it's also obvious that this was a ploy by Rollo to try and win the heart of Lagertha.

There's also an extended scene in season 3 where Lagertha talks to Rollo and subtly admits that Bjorn is his son. Also, Bjorn is big like Rollo, and has them brown eyes, his face looks similar. Etc.
@@dmc2554 I'm pretty sure when he's grown up he had blue eyes and the point that the young version I'd Bjorn had bestfrien eyes line rollo probably like the other person said bad writing that was retconned when they decided that ot was too much to add that as another plot device and story line and would interfere with laughter seasons story lines so they decided to drop it bc it was true not only would ge not of seen Odin live the other sons when ragnar died there would also have been a continued story line of this plot device wind they never went back to it and fleshed it out which means it was dropped for the sake of making more seasons and other story lines where him being ragnar son is integral to the main story line. Or they just used a kid that looked like a young Bjorn in the face and accent but he just had brown eyes instead of blue and that just went with it knowing the older version had blue eyes and most fans wouldn't notice it or it wouldn't matter regardless by time we get to older Bjorn.

Rollo doesn't have brown eyes. Both him and Ragnar had blue eyes, the only difference was that Ragnar's one was more ocean blue. Also Young Bjorn had darker blue eyes which was hard to notice but still wasn't brown.
About to finish season 5, but I agree with the comments. This was really dumb. After the Mediterranean raid, Bjorn & Hvitserk were the only ones out of the group who reacted to Odin's ravens.
See when Rollo said "You cannot deny it on my face" and how Lagertha reacts and said "Do you suppose I could ever tell that to Bjorn?", I think Rollo's right. Show-based not historically.
I think she is talking about it being a possibility. When Rollo says that to Bjorn, Bjorn states that he has heard the rumor that its possible he is his father,, but his mother was with both of them so its also possible that he is not his father. And he is right.

What I hate most about this is it's pretty pointless. Notice how for a good amount of their conversation, Bjorn does not look Rollo in the eye. In many cases, refusing to look someone in the eye is seen as a sign of weakness. However, in this case, it's the opposite. Rollo is not important enough to have Bjorn's full attention. The few times that he does look Rollo in the eye is when he declares Ragnar as his father or refers to him as such.
So, just in this case, it is the opposite? Na, Bjorn was the son of Rollo and his attitude it's like a little child who doesn't wany to understand the complex of the world. He is weak but tries to act all strong because that is all what he knows to do.

Odin appeared to Bjorn the same way he appeared to the other sons of Ragnar and there are two ways of interpreting this. the first, that Bjorn is and has always been Ragnar's son. and the second is that even Bjorn being the son of Rollo, Ragnar loved him as his son, his blood, and Odin recognized it.
Bjorn loved his father, not his uncle, even when he was angry or disagreeing with him and his actions. And that's more important to me than anything else. After all, he and his brothers are Ragnar's legacy.

Alexander Ludwig did a phenomenal job here and through out the series. You can really see him being Ragnars son. From the way he acts and talks. Great acting in this show that the new vikings will never compare.

I think the writers took creative freedom with writing him as son of Rollo, to show the character progression that Ragnar was able to make an element of Rollo into a better man, the man Ragnar always wanted his brother to be. In the end Bjorn was a legendary fighter like Rollo, so much that he was 'the man that could not be killed', but is unquestionably a son of Ragnar through nurture

Many actually suspected this to be true from Season 1, due to a scene with Lagertha and Rollo. They say (like Bjorn), that Rollo was always a great fighter and it was unnatural for Bjorn to be so much taller than Ragnar and to not have inherited so much of Ragnar's intelligence. Personally I think it would have been better if they added more hints to it in earlier seasons. For it to have come up so late into the series made it pointless.

I don't think Rollo actually believed Bjorn was his son. I think he missed his brother and his nephew was the closest thing to both his brother and his firstborn son. Rollo is full of regret and had time to think about everything.
I feel like people completely take this seen wrong. It's not about who Bjorns father is, it's about Rollo's nature. One of the key elements of the dichotomy between the brothers is Rollo's coveting tendencies. He wanted his brother's life, wife, reputation, titles, prestige, etc.
The actor playing rollo said that his arc that whole season was about coming to terms with himself as a man because he is feels as if he is still stuck in Ragnars shadow. I believe even this scene is an extension of that.

I don't think any of those three are definitive proof. Ragnar did not know the truth or did not want to know it (he knew that Rollo and Lagertha had a thing at some point though). Lagertha always played along with Bjorn being Ragnars Son anyway, she said just that to Rollo in this scene. And the Seer tends to tell people only what they ask for, while keeping a lot of things secret. Ragnar never asked wether or not Bjorn is his son. He just assumed Bjorn is his son when talking to the Seer, and the Seer just answers the question as it is given to him. So when Ragnar asks about the future of his sons (including Bjorn), the Seer would just go along with Ragnars belief that Bjorn is his son, potentially. Or he would answer only for his biological sons without naming any names, but since he did mention Bjorn in that context as one of Ragnars sons, I would assume he just went along with Ragnars assumption and belief, rather than answer a question that was not asked of him. Also, Ragnar was more of a father to Bjorn than Rollo was, just influence wise and who he grew up with as a father-figure, and in that sense, Ragnar is definitely Bjorns father.
I think more important to answer the question would be, who did they cast as Bjorn. And they went with someone who has clearly Rollos physique, while all other Sons of Ragnar are smaller. If you compare Ubbe and Bjorn for example, they clearly look as different as Ragnar and Rollo, when it comes to their physique. Rollo was massive, and so is Bjorn. Even though Aslaugh was bigger than Lagherta, all of her sons are smaller than Bjorn. Of course genetically that can be explained by recessive genes, maybe Lagherthas Father was also really big, and it hopped a generation. Or well, Ragnar and Rollo are also brothers, but potentially also different fathers there, otherwise there is definitely some recessive genes going around. But usually when it comes to casting in a TV-Show, they will go with a more direct approach to genetics. So I am sure that he is supposed to be Rollos biological son. And the show also hinted at that before. Pretty much from the get go with the fact that Rollo and Lagertha had a thing at least once and Bjorn is already born a while ago. And in another conversation between Rollo and Lagertha in Season 3. It might all just be to raise the idea that he is Rollos son, for people to speculate about, but I think they intended him to be Rollos biological son.

-Lagertha killed Aslaug even knowing she is not exactly at fault but Lagertha could not help blaming Aslugh because she was too hurt to admit that Ragnar chose another woman over her because she could not give him children.

Then that same heartbreak wolked him right where he left , in thought of taking care of people he loves. BTW, I don't think Rollo was wrong to leave Ragnar either. Ragnar took his woman and Rollo still called him his brother for so many years. Living in Ragnar's shade forever would have been very humiliating when in fact, Ragnar took much from Rollo.
The series doesn't show how Lagertha met Ragnar and Rollo so you can't say she was Rollo's woman. I bet Ragnar never knew Rollo and her had something in the past. Maybe they slept together but were never together. Ragnar is not like Rollo, he would never sleep with his brother's woman. No doubt Rollo would.

This is one of those scenes where I wish they'd made adjustments but kept the bulk. Have it where Rollo says something along the lines of 'I trained you Bjorn, I was with you throughout your childhood, you are as much a son to me as you are to Ragnar', putting that point across but not actually pushing the idea that he genuinely is Rollo's son. Then include Bjorn's response. I seriously like the dialogue and acting that comes out of this scene but given the context the idea is laughable and absurd this late in the game.
Yes, especially since they did a great job in earlier seasons in portraying the relationship between the two. You could feel they were very close regardless of biological kinship so there was no point in adding the detail of supposed paternity

This was all really bad writing. Part of me also wants to say that Rollo was playing both sides for his own benefit. He has only his wife and sons in Normandy, so giving his nephew and Lagertha a home there would be a way to keep whatever family he had in Kattegat close. He helped out Ivar because he really doesn't care what happens to his former home. After all, Ragnar was always the more ambitious of the two. Rollo only cared about Lagertha and Bjorn, so keeping what was important to him, and discarding the rest is what he wanted to achieve here. Still, I say it's very bad writing. Michael Hirst has gotten very sloppy. Ivar being carted off to the east? The real Ivar Ragnarsson was one of the first Viking Kings in Ireland. Why not explore that? When Bjorn went to the middle East, he was informed that they weren't the first Norsemen to visit. Many Swedes sailed down to the Byzantine empire and found work as bodyguards for the Emperor. Imagine one of the other sons of Ragnar becoming a commander of the Varangians? That would be more interesting than having this ongoing war between Bjorn and Ivar, while the other brothers are relegated to underlings. The real sons of Ragnar are turning in their graves.

I think people are missing the point of the scene. What Bjorn is saying, is that he's a true son of Ragnar even if he's not his blood son. Ragnar was his father, Ragnar raised and Ragnar cared Rolo didn't care about anyone but himself and maybe his actual blood children, that he knows. Yeah he always cared for Bjorn but not in the way of a father. Now I don't know how the Norse saw it but to me you don't have to be related to someone by Blood for them to be your father they just have to be there for you as a father. So it's irrelevant if Rollo is his blood father. He is still Bjorn ragnarsson.

Am I the only one to notice that young Björn had brown eyes like Rollo while adult Björn has blue eyes like Ragnar?
It's bad writing, plain and simple. It obviously didn't work, and it's also obvious that this was a ploy by Rollo to try and win the heart of Lagertha.
@@dustinjackson4761 lol it didn't work for you because you didn't see the subtleties during the early seasons. It's pretty obvious that Lagertha hooked up with Rollo before Ragnar. There's also an extended scene in season 3 where Lagertha talks to Rollo and subtly admits that Bjorn is his son. Also, Bjorn is big like Rollo, and has them brown eyes, his face looks similar. Etc.
@@dmc2554 I'm pretty sure when he's grown up he had blue eyes and the point that the young version I'd Bjorn had bestfrien eyes line rollo probably like the other person said bad writing that was retconned when they decided that ot was too much to add that as another plot device and story line and would interfere with laughter seasons story lines so they decided to drop it bc it was true not only would ge not of seen Odin live the other sons when ragnar died there would also have been a continued story line of this plot device wind they never went back to it and fleshed it out which means it was dropped for the sake of making more seasons and other story lines where him being ragnar son is integral to the main story line. Or they just used a kid that looked like a young Bjorn in the face and accent but he just had brown eyes instead of blue and that just went with it knowing the older version had blue eyes and most fans wouldn't notice it or it wouldn't matter regardless by time we get to older Bjorn.
@@ethanbell7283 lol no. you're wrong. Bjorn kid actor had brown eyes. Bjorn adult actor also has brown eyes Rewatch early seasons and see Rollo always helping Bjorn in battle, rewatch season 3 extended scene of Lagertha subtly admits to Rollo that Bjorn is his son.
Rollo doesn't have brown eyes. Both him and Ragnar had blue eyes, the only difference was that Ragnar's one was more ocean blue.
Also Young Bjorn had darker blue eyes which was hard to notice but still wasn't brown.

About to finish season 5, but I agree with the comments. This was really dumb. After the Mediterranean raid, Bjorn & Hvitserk were the only ones out of the group who reacted to Odin's ravens.

See when Rollo said "You cannot deny it on my face" and how Lagertha reacts and said "Do you suppose I could ever tell that to Bjorn?", I think Rollo's right. Show-based not historically.
I think she is talking about it being a possibility. When Rollo says that to Bjorn, Bjorn states that he has heard the rumor that its possible he is his father,, but his mother was with both of them so its also possible that he is not his father. And he is right.
@@Melissatn but the mother know who the father is. People just don’t want to accept it cause they love ragnar and bjorn too much but the show clearly means bjorn was rollo’s son. But historically, he was ragnar youngest son.

@@christiankatangala8007 That's not always the case. Look at the west nowadays tons of women sleep around and are CERTAIN a specific guy is the biological father then DNA testing is done and it's revealed they aren't.

What I hate most about this is it's pretty pointless. You can literally cut out all the "who's the father?" drama nonsense and it wouldn't change anything in the story, I'm pretty sure this was done just for drama I mean what's the significance of Rollo being the father? If Rollo truly is Bjorn's father then he's the worst father in the show seeing as he sides with Ivar against Bjorn twice.
