  • New video!!
As you can see, I never edit an entire video on rollo, and yet it's one of the most fascinating characters! in spite of all these betrayals, I still love him, he has no luck, nor the recognition he would have liked! but what a warrior !! i hope we will see him again in the next season ;)
I am really lacking vikings, I can not wait long !! give us season 6 now !!!

The great irony is that Rollo achieved Ragnar's dream of acquiring a new land for norsemen to farm and build new lives upon through treachery, while Ragnar could not through relatively righteous means. And all the vikings hated Rollo for it while deifying Ragnar and seeking to fulfil his vision, refusing to see that Rollo had already built their future in front of them in Normandy.

Rollo wouldn´t be there if it wasn´t Ragnar and the vikings conquer Paris. Rollo wouldn´t have converted to the christs, wouldn´t have stayed in Paris after Ragnar leaving, wouldn´t have even made one step behind the doors of Paris by his own. He had his future made for him by Ragnar when Ragnar decided to conquer Paris and achieving to occupy it. Rollo achieved nothing by himself, but betrayed his brother and his folk behind their back. He even got provided a whole army by marrying the princess. It´s not that he achieved to deserve that army. Rollo is a self-seeking betrayer.

Ive come to the conclusion after watching the show too many times that rollo was truly always in the gods favor but never knew it. And ragnar was in their favor, but wasnt grateful enough so they took more from him. Rollo believed himself to be disliked by the gods, and while he fell out for a while, he never gave up. He lived a better, happier life than ragnar in the end. Ragnar suffered more because he didnt appreciate what he got.

Thanks for the tribute on Rollo. To escape Ragnar he had to make some difficult choices to make his own path.
I am always amazed at how many times Ragnar selfishly used and abused those around him simply because he felt entitled to in order to advance himself and his ambitions. Ragnar broke his word, his oaths constantly to anyone. He was not an honourable or virtuous person. When he paid to have Rollo excused, it was because of Rollo's prowess, and that Rollo woukd be cowed enough for him to still use to his advantages. Ragnar was as faulted as those around him, no better or worse, and he often behaved just like those he turned against but coukdn't see it. The arrogance of Odin.
Ragnar was forgiven by people who loved him more than he loved them. I think this is the emotion that Rollo struggled with. Ragnar never cared how his choices and methods would affect others like Rollo, Bjorn, Lagertha, Athelstan, well everyone, and that was his undoing.
Even though he wanted to sacrifice Athelstan, thinking he'd fulfilled Ragnar's purpose, it was Athelstan's God and faith that stayed the hand of his being Ragnar's sacrifice and Leif was lost instead. I think that haunted Ragnar. Athelstan was the one person Ragnar could not make to bend to him, Athelstan loved and served with selfless grace, purity of heart which confounded Ragnar.

Ragnar was real (to an extent) - he might have a mighty tale to tell, or he may have been his many sons as you say "Ragnarson" who knows, nevertheless a Ragnar was real.

      - HobbiT - We have always believed that Ragnar is the father, & if the show changes direction it wont be for nothing. Wich is why it has to be true, if Ragnar really is the father then that means they included that scene for nothing.

S F stop bringing history to the table. Thats so random it has nothing to do with this. Show is fiction, they just use historical Viking names & create their own story out of it. Ragnar and the other main characters from Vikings have almost nothing in common with the historical ones.
historical Björn was not the son of lagertha, he was king in southern sweden yes.
Björn from Vikings: son of the norwegian shieldmaiden Lagertha, king in southern Norway (Kattegat).
Shall i go on ? would have been better if they just used different names for the characters cause people compare them to the historical ones even thoug they dont have anything in common.

    • @fairhair5423
      @fairhair5423 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

S F bro.. theres always exceptions.. just because i say that most characters in the show have very little in common with the historical ones doesn't mean that all characters have a 100% fictional story. Its not black/white sure theres a middle ground.
Anyway this is Ragnar from Vikings: vikings.fandom.com/wiki/Ragnar
this is the historical one: no.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnar_Lodbrok. Compare these two, what they have in common are basically nothing.

I think not being with largretha really broke him for so many years. He probably feels like Ragnar stole lagretha from him, even if she chose to be with him, the feeling is all the same. Just like lagretha feels like auslaug stole Ragnar from her. That pain and loss made him resentful, made him into a bit of a villain. Set him on the trajectory that guided so much of his life, made him resent his brother and gave him the ambition to become greater than him, and so many of his actions and aspects of his personality can be understood through that lens. Clive does such a great job portraying this great beast of a man with deep internal scars. Rollo is a very layered character. I think near the end he understands everything he did, and while he doesn’t necessarily regret getting to his position, he wonders what it was worth if he lost so much of what he cared about, even if he resented parts of that world. The scene with bishop heahmund is one of my favorite in the series. You can feel the sorrow and regret when he says “for my sins, are too numerous to count”. Almost a tragic character

Rollo loved all of his children, all of them, until the very end of the show. The Viking age, the actual historical period, was filled with treachery, violence, despicable acts of savagery and the most basic of human needs, survival, safety and love. At the core of all this history, real and imagined, is a beating human heart and the thunder of battle, like a song of long forgotten gods carried on in our collective imaginations.

He saved Ragnar life on beginning to... Everyone looking from Ragnar side and saying "Rollo betrayed" but Ragnar betrayed Rollo. He understand he wont never achieved ruler with being shadow on Ragnar.
Believe or not he achieved Ragnar dreams. Maybe he didnt rule of england but he ruled much more that and he continued his viking bloodline on France. Truly Berserker, heartbroken Father,Betrayed brother.

He wanted to prove himself and failed again and again and again. At some point he became depressed and no longer believed in himself. If Rollo "taught" me one great thing, it was never to give up and never to be content with being put down by other people. No matter how much you love these people. He idolized Lagertha from the start... she was a goddess to him. I don't think he would have cheated on Lagertha. He went through one of the most exciting character developments of all and the actor really gave an epic performance.

Wow! This is what I was waiting, a great tribute to the character. I like the way that you narrated/edited his story. The relation with Bjorn is so touching, as it is also in his relation to christianity and viking legacy. His rapes, extreme violence, treasons and jealousy makes Rollo definitely a very ugly human been... but in many situations he also fulfills important hero functions and the dark/brightest sides of truly "pagan values" (Floki sadly develops as a religious bigot). This ambiguity is one of the qualities that makes Vikings a never-to-be-forgotten show, attribute that Rollo represented at its most. Tell his story is a hard and complex task considering de prolonged and complex development of the character, but this masterpiece video helps to grasp a bit of it.

Kelechi Obasi , Rollo was bigger and stronger in body, and a fierce warrior ,no doubt. Ragnar ,on the other hand was smarter,in his combat, faster and could use an axe, sword and bow with equal deadly precision. Ragnar was lit with a fire in his gut, that made him absolutely deadly on the battlefield. Ragner was also vicious, and woe to anyone who tried to hurt his family, including Rollo. While still injuted from his wounds,he took Earl Haraldson on in one on one combat and became Earl himself. I am not a large guy,I am built the same way Travis Fimmel is,not Clive Standen(who I love in ALL his characters). Ask any Navy SEAL, or any cop, biker, brawler. It is men like me that they fear more than the big burly dude.We have had a lifetime of fighting people who usually were bigger. We adapt and hit hard first and never stop attacking. This vid. was a GREAT tribute to Rollo. Even though he was a rapist,a traitor Ragnar spared his life, only to be betrayed once more by Rollo. Navigation,Trade routes,ship-building the basis of Law that is used in the west to this day, even the names of the week are primarily Norse Gods...Tyr(my favorite)(w)Odin, Thor,And Freyja. I am part Danish, and that fact has always made me interested in Norse Mythology. I find it far more interesting than any other mythos.

This is all good, except there were not brothers, this was shown in the Vikings Tv series to add ,,drama'' as you know this is fiction .... Rollo was living in a very different period ot time .... he died around 930 !

Rollo did change to be with his wife which proves he loved her above all other women in his life including Lagertha.

Ragnar had infiltrated France after he faked his death, but then delayed conquering it when he had the chance to. He missed it and Rollo cased the opportunity for glory.

S F yes. Funny fact: but the only reason why William succeded was because the english king & his army had just fought off a large army of Vikings from Norway, & by the time William arrived they were pretty exhausted. What if the roles were reversed.. then England might have been Norwegian today hahah

'Rollo' was known originally as Hrolfr thought by some to have come from Norway - took with force what is now Basse Normandy from the Frankish King Charles 'the simple' in 911AD following the treaty of St Claire-sur-Epte.
