    Hi Dave,
I'm still trying to get the shift arm out of my 5 speed. We talked before and you gave my some info on removing it, no luck.I know what has to happen I just can't figure a way to do it. The tapered pin on the shift dog is in such a position that I can't get anything in there to drive it out. Any ideas short of drilling a hole in the side of the transmission?
    Craig

for sure don't to that (drilling the trans housing). I assume you have an older 5 speed without the reverse lockout. You are just going to have to get creative in there. So you loosen up the nut back it off enought to protect the threads on the end and try to get somehting in there like a flat bar to tapp on the nut. Maybe a little heat from a mapp gas torch, maybe some expandable plyers wedged in between the top of the nut and the side of the housing. Just dont get frustrated and make things worse. maybe double nut it and see if you can just wiggle the pin a bit. As soon as it breaks free it will come right out.

I have PDF of the Datsun factory manual on that transmission and there are 3 very good videos on TH-cam of the disassemble and assemble. Ive had 2 of those apart first one took some time.

you are prob referring to the ones by villageland, no audio. I watched those several times before attempting this one. I decided to follow the FSM regarding using a press and the sequence. I noticed on his he did not use a press but rather a series of spacers and then the nuts to pull the mainshaft into place.

Dave WM yes I was. Whee you able to disassemble the shift rod and replace a seal or what every is in there? I stopped trying to remove that part I couldn’t find any info other the the manual and it was no help.

yes you have to release a bolt that is wedged in (no head) it was a bit of an effort to get it started, IIRC I used a drift and access thru the reverse lockout hole. then there is the knock out plug at the end of the shifter. Its staked on only, the shift rod just pops it out once you have that wedged on bolt and lever off (the lever that engages the shift rod ends). Once that rear cover is popped off its easy. IIRC there is a large O ring and some smaller ones as well. Its been a while so cant recall the specifics, but really pretty easy once you get that wedged on bolt off. Its the same kind of bolt used to lock in the rear wheel spindle pins if you have done any work on the rear suspension.

Dave WM Thanks did any of you videos have that process? I tried for 2 hours and finally gave up thinking it would be destroyed by the time I figured it out.
