    After Katrina here in Mississippi, the water killed a lot of our trees on the coast near the beach. A tree carver came in and carved dolphins and stuff like that. They’re very pretty.

    You gotta see the Elissa. It's a ship from a brief era of iron hulled clippers. One of three that are still seaworthy. I told a person I met when I was on a gig in DC I had been on the Eissa while it was being restored and this lady freaked out. It helped she was the seasonal manager of volunteers at Mystic Seaport in CT.

    One time in the 70's when I was in nursing school there, I was taking the ferry across and someone ran into and damaged the unloading ramp! We all had to back off! It was a nightmare! I had a new 240Z and I was convinced that the guy next to me was gonna scratch my new car! 😁 Used to love riding the ferry! You can walk on....you don't have to drive on. Then just take the next ferry back whenever you're ready! Fun!

    The Bolivar Ferry is the best free ride in Texas. You will see dolphins every time. There is no High School on Bolivar, so all bolivar teens gotta take the two busses twice a day to Galveston and back or walk from Port Bolivar to the pedestrian deck.
    Also Houston Transtar has a livestream on the ferry at all times.

    When I worked for DirecTv when I lived in Houston I had mixed feelings about Galveston. Me being from Ohio I was happy to see the ocean and beach, especially during winter when my family was dealing with snow and ice. However, I hated working on those houses...They were just difficult because how they were designed and how high they set. But Houston to Galveston to Jamaica beach had some of the nicest people. I remember driving my Directv van on a ferry to go to some Island. This country boy from Ohio didn't know anything about that lol...I told my supervisor "So you want me to drive my van, my whole van on a boat" lol.

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bet that was a surprise when you pulled up to the ferry. LOL We can see how some of the old houses would be a challenge to work in. Plus, there are some unique structures on the island too. Glad you had the chance to spend some time down this way.

We are always looking for good places to eat. Have passed the kite shop several times but never stopped in. We will make it a point next time. @rvamericayall  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like that is changing. Thanks so much for the comment. When we read it, we went to Google for more information and found out that in the last several years, Galveston has erected a bronze statue of Mr Johnson and named a park for him. There is also apparently a tree that has been carved in his honor.

    You did not mention the Galveston city museum in the old bank building (designed by Frank Loyd Wright) that has lots of pictures dating from the 1800's to after the 1900 storm , CAF Lone Star Flight museum at the galveston airport (wwII aircraft) Galveston Railroad Museum ( old train station turned into a museum), and several pre 1900 mansions you can tour (Bishops Palace, Moody Mansion , etc)

    • @rvamericayall
      @rvamericayall  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestions George! We visit the Railroad Museum in our Galveston History video: th-cam.com/video/DLJYQxJdnos/w-d-xo.html . The Flight Museum has moved onto the mainland because of storm damage. If we're thinking of the correct museum in the old bank building (on The Strand), it is now a contemporary art museum. (and you're correct, we haven't shared that one yet) One of the things we love about Galveston is how many interesting places there are to visit.

We know they require approval from the park to place a cache. For the parks that don’t allow it, maybe they are historic sites that would potentially have relics they don’t want disturbed?

      Hi! It’s been a long time since we’ve been to Moody Gardens. We took our son when he was young. Kiddos love it, but we haven’t been without kids. They have also changed it a lot since we’ve been, so we can’t really comment on what it’s like today.

    All of the ferries operated by the state of Texas (4) are free. IIf you feed the birds on the ferry go to the back of the boat., nobody likes their car covered in seagull crap.
