- / @youcartv A new pre-crash safety system prototype developed by ZF uses an external side airbag deployed milliseconds before a collision. It provides an additional lateral crumple zone, which can help save lives and reduce occupant injury severity by up to 40 percent. To make this possible, ZF has networked the airbags to the vehicle’s sensor systems and developed algorithms that are capable of determining if a crash is imminent and decide whether or not to deploy the airbag.

@@antoniojmonetti It's not trying to save the sheet metal, but the people inside it. The airbag can soften the impact which means a smaller chance of injury of the passengers.

I remenber a movie with sylvester stalone , he has an accident with a car and there is a complete airbag inside the car or an expansive plastic substance inside the car and he is safe. When i saw the movie i though it was so futuristic .

There is a solid crash dolly under the inflatable car. It's only disguised as a car so that the car with the airbags can detect pre collision.

What about in front or back of the car will there be external airbags installed there too?
This is the Carter I’m guess the use case for this comes from the fact that the sides of a car don’t have enough compression space in a crash.
I would say the front and rear of a car have very good crumple zones to protect the passengers. It’s the side impacts that are usually more severe.
I don’t think this is meant to save the car damage, it’s just to add another layer to compress and spread the impact energy wider.
@@shawnmh837 well explained. I watching some crash testing and the side airbags on some cars wont save a passenger from severe force the structure caves in.

Brilliant, but still needs a sht loads of work. I tell you another good thing about them, it would be easy to come up with a simple lock you can just feed through the holes. Or for a bit of fun, you could walk by and fill then full of expanding foam. Come to think of it I could come up with a million reasons why it’s just not going to take off.

Yeah, that won't cause a problem in CA. or in other countries when motorcyclists filter between cars, and it triggers ejecting them off their bikes! Tech that focuses on accident avoidance (e.g. autonomous driving) is time better spent than crash protection for assumed collisions.

Yes it will reduce the damage, but what’s the point? The airbag would be as much or even more expensive as the damage itself. And if an SUV or a big 4x4 hits you it will miss the lower part of the bodywork where the airbag is

from this video it is clear if you an outside airbag then in case of accident from side there will not be a single scratch in ur car and the second car would grt completely crambed.

Heres a solution to have full 360 protection at all times without the need for airbag deployment: put a big bubble around the whole frame, plus you'd get a 360 degree view of all traffic.😂
Every car should come with collision avoidance braking standard !!! I am sure the lobbyists for the auto repair, car insurance, hospitals, funeral homes, are all against any form of crash control as it costs them money
So now instead of replacing several panels, door windows and interior locking mechanisms, you can add an expensive side airbag module and sensors to the total repair bill.
That is a very smart concept!

In Romania we have that for long long time ago, every rusty side skirt is filled with polyuretan foam, so thats very safe 😅🤣🤣🤣
An airbag placed where 80% of rust starts = very expensive replacement airbags every 6 years. This is intended to save the life of the auto industry, not the motorists.
