@@xcritic9671 yes. it has cutscenes that feature characters fighting, and even has choreographed scenes in the middle of a boss fight in the form of quick time events. you're probably thinking of heat actions when talking about "mostly violence" and you'd be right, but to me they're a great example of how over the top video game violence can get without relying on gore or ripping things apart.

I absolutely loved the end boss fight in Death stranding. The stakes, the emotions and the final payoff of beating the living shit out of Higgs in slow-mo. The dialgue is pure gold to me: "No BT's, no voidouts, just a good old fashioned boss fight... one last game over". The post fight quips, the final realisation when Higgs loses control over Amelie and gets worked on by Fragile. To me that was a perfect scene that tied the whole story together. It felt personal and satisfying and I can't get it out of my head to this day.

Great special episode. Although I was expecting actual video game cinematics like the intro scene from Onimusha 3 that was in fact choreographed by Donnie Yen, pretty much any of the Star Wars: The Old Republic trailers, and quite a few others that I'm too lazy to name. Also that gun-fu hallway fight from Resident Evil: Vendetta which isn't from a game but is a video game adaptation and would probably be even more appropriate for this video game/movie crossover episode.

  • @WaterCrane
    @WaterCrane 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

We don't talk about the abomination that is Mortal Kombat Annihilation! You can tell it was done on the cheap... even the intro is exactly the same as the first film except the addition of "Annihilation" at the end.
I do wish you had a moment to talk about the two Mortal Kombat fights that were added in post-production (Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion and Liu Kang vs. Reptile) because they are by far the best fights in the film (that and they were choreographed by Robin Shou, Liu Kang's actor who is from the same school as the likes of Jackie Chan). Liu Kang vs. Reptile is just 2½ minutes of pure adrenaline with Traci Lords' Control blaring in the background, while, for me, the Johnny Cage vs. Scorpion has an impact that really makes me wince (when Scorpion goes flying through the air and whacks his shins on a railing)! I'm glad you touched on the more modern Mortal Kombat film, that kind of misses the mark in a different way (not being a tournament and has a protagonist who isn't a game character), but tries to hint at the lore in the way when Sub-Zero is stripped down to his black undergarments to imply his future transformation into Noob Saibot (for those who don't know, the all-black wraith Noob Saibot is the original Sub-Zero from the first Mortal Kombat, while from the second game onwards, the person who takes the moniker of Sub-Zero is the original's younger brother).
Despite the 90s cheese, Mortal Kombat has a cult following and is generally well-liked among fans. After all, Lindon Ashby's wise-cracking and immature portrayal of Johnny Cage got carried over into the game, and Trevor Goddard's Australian (actually British) portrayal of Kano was so well-received that Midway actually retconned his backstory to make him Australian. And the most recent thing... Mortal Kombat 11... not only did they model Shang Tsung after his film actor, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, they even got him to reprise his role and be his voice actor too! If that's not an honour, I don't know what is!

As you said near the end of the video, one of the best feelings in a video game (and many movies) is leveling up enough and finally being able to face down and beat the big bad who you couldnt beat in the beginning. The best example of this has to be the rival type boss. You know the one, they're well... you... or a color swapped version of you but better than you in every way. So after you beat them near the end of the game after they kicked your ass without a sweat earlier on it's even sweeter. Jetstream Sam from Metal Gear Rising is a good example Baldur and Thor from the new God of War games also kind of fit the bill. But Vergil from Devil May Cry 3 is by far the gold standard of the trope, and I'm pretty sure where it properly began aswell. You need to talk about him eventually.

I'm glad you're not getting bothered by hater comments. I've seen a lot of TH-camrs go on angry rants at the beginning of their videos or in community posts and for me, usually someone who's just there trying to enjoy the content, these rants while understandable, are always a little offputting and they set a negative tone for me especially going into a video. Keeping it a light hearted retort and weaving it into your content is the way if you're going to address it, and you did just that, so thank you for not ranting. Anyway, having a few haters is unfortunately part of any creator, celebrity, or anyone else with a sizable audience/platform but it's also usually a good thing because it at least means your content isn't so boring that people will just ignore you and move on.
Regarding video game fights. One of the fights in a video game I rather enjoyed is in Detroit Become Human where Connor (the player) fights a 1v2 against essentially stripper androids. Controlling the fight is just a series of quicktime events, but the animation and the "camera" work are just really cool for me personally. I swear it's not because they are strippers.

I think when it comes to video game fights, what makes them _good_ is mainly how it feels to play it. It should give you that feeling that, if you're not in tune with the game mechanics and the rhythm of the boss, you are just getting demolished. But as you learn it better, it starts feeling doable. Until, finally, you hit that flow state and you can counter everything they throw at you and get your hits in. For games to separate themselves from movies as an art form, they should focus on doing what movies can't - making _you_ feel like you're executing it. Any game that simply makes you watch two characters fight, and just have you press the button when it tells you to, is a _bad_ video game fight.
With that said, some of the best video game fights I have played were in 2D Metroidvania games. Such as the final boss of Nine Sols, Radiance from Hollow Knight, or the archer boss from Prince of Persia the Lost Crown. Also, the second last boss in Elden Ring is pretty great. (The last boss is "meh", and just a lot of running around.)

I love the videos and keep up the good work! You've really opened my view on what makes movies good and what to look out for.
I feel like 1800's western inspired games such as Red Dead Redemption would work great for a comparison in good movie fights vs bad movie fights and scenes as a whole. They could also be used in a movie scenes category as there are some deep and meaningful scenes in some westerns (like Django) and in those games as well.
Another suggestion could be to incorporate scenes and character development form the Assassins Creed Series and comparing certain scenes and fight scenes to movies in the similar genre eg. Assassins Creed Black Flag and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Racing games like NFS Underground could also be covered as they can feature high stakes and high adrenaline moments which can really attach you to the scene.
Just throwing a few suggestions out there...

Gotta put the final fight between Arthur and Micah from Red Dead Redemption 2 in as a good video game fight. I’d also put in any of fights from Baldur’s gate 3, Especially the final fight.

My favourite fight in a video game is the final fight in The Last Of Us Part 2. It's extremely visceral and is quite uncomfortable to watch because you don't really have a routing side which makes it really emotionally tense.

Just when I feel like your channel has peaked, you find a new way to impress me with the format of your videos 😅
Lost Judgement by RGG Games has a ton of really impressive and fun choreography! Have a look at “When Yagami becomes Jackie Chan” for a really fun cutscene.
Final Fantasy Advent Children has three fantastic fights with Tifa in the church; the entire party versus Bahamut, and my favourite: Cloud’s Omnislash at the end of the film (especially the European version)
It probably borders on breaking the fighting game equivalent of “no guns” but some of the Eikon fights in Final Fantasy 16 just have incredible spectacle and a stunning score. The ending battle is so damn satisfying, as cheesy as it is with the title drop. In general Final Fantasy has some incredible stuff with the limit breaks and Sephiroth’s crazy Supernova move.

@@MarcusFlemmings Oh no sorry, it’s just the name of a TH-cam video which shows the cutscene in the game ‘Lost Judgement’! Those games are very long so it’s kinda hard to refer to specific moments haha! I’ll try and link it here but I’m not sure if TH-cam allows links:

I'm not sure if you're still checking comments on this video, but a game you should really check out is absolver, they have great fighting animations and let you choose what style of fighting you'd like to do. The developers also made sifu. Sifu is also great in the fact that they reference great fight scenes in movies like the raid or oldboy.

Exanima has great sword fights, with realistic physics. The swords doen't magically slash right through your enemy, it hits hard. You can get some real brutal hits in. Kindom Come deliverence is another good more realistic one. I don't really like the flashy but unrealistic boss fights that seem so popular these days.

Okay here we go some of the bar fight scenes and just fist fighting in general is great in Red Dead Redemption two, Kratos vs baldur and Kratos vs Thor among other god of war fight scenes are good, ghost of Tsushima has some great fighting gameplay too, if you look up brutality on yt look at some of his blade and sorcery or bone lab vids they have some pretty good fight scenes, and I’m sure you’ve heard of these but some of the fighting cutscenes in mk10, mk11 and mk1 are good, also the reveal trailers for mk have some great fight scenes.

You should 100% try the Yakuza saga, I'd recommend the first Yakuza 0 long fight, but if you want to go for the fancy and best fight, go for the final boss of like a dragon garden: the man who erased his name
