  • This is a BUMPER one!
    All the first 5 volumes.
Mission Impossible: Fallout has some incredible fight scenes but what about Atomic Blonde? IP Man? The Raid? Batman vs Superman? Barry?
And the worst? Steven Seagal might be in the video...maybe?
Volume 1 has been re-recorded - however, the IP Man sequence featuring Donnie Yuen has been removed due to YT copyright.

Honestly, The bourne example is one of the rare cases where I feel the shaky cam style works. there are only two people, the setup is simple enough that it's clear at all times who is armed with what, the shaky style furthers the frantic confusion of a "real" fight rather than the virtuosity of a "story" fight. Could the camerawork and editing be more meticulous ? sure.
Nonetheless I feel like switching to the style of the raid for the bourne action scene would be a betrayal of what the movie is trying to tell.

    • @thedamntrain3467
      @thedamntrain3467 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

bourne shakycam works because cuts are matched to a focal point that is consistent across cuts, your brain is able to follow action of shaky shots because shaking of the camera is just noise the human eye is trained to ignore, while your eyes stay on the focal point. in bad shaky cams the focal point is not chosen or matched adaquately between shots.

I will say that the Bourne fight does at least two things well:
    1. Even though the camera is shaky and you can't see much of it, I think you're right that the actors are actually doing a really good job and the choreography of the movements is actually solid.
    2. The storytelling within the fight, at least after watching it once or twice, is actually plainly laid out. There's these flurries of barely-comprehensible motion, but there's ALWAYS a pause that shows the characters leading into the next segment of the fight.
As the most obvious two examples:
After they grapple for a moment against the counter, Bourne is pushed back and there's a pause where the antagonist holds the knife in his hands and approaches.
The second obvious moment is when the antagonist crashes back into the shelf, glances at the metal edge, and begins to cut the zip-tie from his wrists. Meanwhile, Bourne takes the moment to find a weapon, which instead of being as simple as, y'know, a knife or a bat, he tightly rolls up a magazine.
This is true in the Bourne Identity fight sequence as well. In both fights, you constantly see the two trying to outmaneuver one another, improvising weapons, demonstrating their true skills and displaying the efficiency of their fighting styles where they mostly just try to immediately kill one another or choke each other out.
So while I agree that the shaky camera should have been toned down, I actually think some amount, maybe even a somewhat high amount, would still be effective when you consider the way the director tells the story of the fight sequence. You may not know who hit whom at any given moment, but HOW THE FIGHT IS PROCEEDING is always explained in the pauses.

There are many scenes in different movies in which I enjoyed the fighting, it felt natural, BUT, the hall scene from Oldboy is the best one in my opinion. You might ask why? Simple, he gets tired. He doesn't have the best technique, he receives multiple blows, it makes you believe he's in real danger, but for me, the realism is him getting tired as the fight drags on. Anybody here who practices martial arts knows fighting is tiring, you only have so much adrenaline in your body, you only have so much sugar in your muscles, your whole body is in complete overdrive. You can be the fittest fighter in the world, but you will also get tired. I love that scene.

scene (and movie) doesn't get enough credit. this content creator, says a lot of things i disagree with, and his take that the oldboy (original) fight scene isn't great "from a technical standpoint" is one of my disagreements. that scene is fantastic on all points, realism, drama, tension, technicals, choreography, its visceral, and engaging, not to mention the editing is phenomenal. one of the best, and it inspired a TON of fights in later movies,

You already showed part of it, but the storytelling in Ip Man III Donny Yen vs. Mike Tyson is outstanding. In fact the entire series is like Rambo where every film, while being on the surface an action movie, is actually sending a message. Chinese history. Very basically you can say "This is the guy who trained Bruce Lee.", but Ip Man 1 was a meta-battle between China and Japan WWII/Nanking (Win), 2 was China vs. Britain Hong Kong occupation (Win), 3 was China vs the USA (Tie) and vs China losing its identity (Loss), and 4 was China in the USA (Win). Each fight tells the story of the relations between the countries with different tactics and fighting styles. Ip Man 3 has the disciplined master of Kung Fu against the most powerful hitter on the planet. And like China and the USA nobody won...you can say they came to a respectful agreement.

I think if they removed the shakey camera in The Bourne Supremacy fight it would have benefitted the movie a lot not only for the obvious making the fight more coherent for the viewer but working well with the story and the camera work could have mirrored Bourne himself, for example in a fight he's in his element and there's no uncertainty as his training or programming has made it so deeply ingrained that there's no doubt in himself whereas in other scenes without direct action would be shakey cam as it would be more in line with his uncertainty and peaking when in closer relation to his forgotten past thus making the camera work reflect his overall mental state adding to the overall movie's theme.
    But that's just my opinion.

  • @matthewmucci9107
    @matthewmucci9107 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Haven't finished the video yet, but check out the fights in Parker. Quite realistic, well choreographed, great makeup and effects, real stakes.
Regarding shaky cam and frenetic editing, I'm 90% in agreement with you. If the purpose of the scene or overall goal is to give a sense of the speed, chaos, and confusion of a/the fight shaky cam and schitzo editing is forgivable. BUT and big but, that has to be the obvious reason, you can't let the director hide behind that. An excellent example IMO is the shootout in the basement bar in inglorious bastards. It is pure chaos, over in 30 seconds, and everyone is shot. Exactly how something like that would happen in real life.
Now if the purpose is to show off the fight, nothing will do but steady cam nearly stationary camera, wide angle shots to show everything that is happening or super close up to show the intensity like you saving private Ryan example.

Honestly, I think Iron Fist did not deserve to be lambasted that much.
While I absolutely snoozed through the first season, the second season was actually very enjoyable. It had a much better story, more action scenes and most importantly vastly improved fight choreography, and you could definitely tell the actors had much more training this time around. It had fewer cuts, and the actor playing Iron Fist did a lot more fighting on camera.
Really bummed they cancelled it. I personally looked forward to season 3.

Absolutely brilliant videos! I do wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts!!! Keep up the great content! My only thing is... That Bruce Lee had nothing but respect for the stunt men he worked with, often bargaining for higher wadges for them with the studio. It was never stated in Matthew Pollys book that he "tagged" people on purpose, only on accident. Also Bruce had a massive respect for and trained with Judo Gene LeBell many times asking for help on how to sell strikes. For an in depth look on these rumors, see the Kung Fu genius and goldenbell training youtube channels for actual interviews with Matthew polly and others on Bruce's real stunt back stories... p.s. If you want anime fight scenes my first go to tip would be Mappa. As much as I hate the studio their animation is smooth, and they incorporate real fighting styles beyond the crazy anime sht you would expect.
The first episode of Ninja Kamui is also a prime example of hand to hand combat, tho I suggest never going beyond the first episode, bcs everything else is bad after that.
Hajime no Ippo and Megalo box are more grounded examples, both in the boying theme.
Not really centered around fighting, but Cowboy Bebop is also great, and its protagonist's fighting style was inspired by Bruce Lee, so it might worth Cheking out.

I think that you missed the point when people said that it was unrealistic to see a 60kg woman beating up 100kg men. We all accept that movie logic is not the same as the real world (suspension of disbelief) but it still needs to be logical within the logic set out by the movie. So we can accept that people can take metal poles to the head and continue fighting as it is relative to the logic in the movie (determination and courage = ability to endure punishment). However, when you see something that even ignores the logic of movies, such as small women beating up multiple men, it breaks that suspension of disbelief. It can be carried off if the actor has enough charisma, or if the movie sets out its own logic (for example in comando when Arnie takes on a entire army) but I don't think the example you give does that.

51:48 This isn't really a great example, he's just doing throwing motions and letting the CGI artists do the rest of the work. Keanu is old, the choreography is partly worse cause he just can't pull of the more advanced moves anymore and they have to nerf characters who would rightfully defeat him to make him seem more powerful. The last couple John Wick movies are especially bad with this, Keanu is moving so slow yet still beats these younger, faster fighters.

Jesus, dude. The entire video - the entire premise - is an opinion. People who wrote movie reviews don’t give constant caveats like “It’s just what I think.” In addition, making strong proclamations in what every one knows is an opinion piece adds levity and sense of passion to it. It stirs emotion for the consumer - even if it’s negative bc they disagree.

    • @robmarsh918

@@BiteMe3331 So, was the tone…offensive? To what? The movie? Bc if thats what this is about - the fact that his tone matched the opinion he was expressing - then what you’re really saying is you just simply disagree 😂 That’s it. You disagreed with his opinion toward movies that you feel deserve more recognition.
My guy. Really? You watched a video that was clearly a critique and review on something, didn’t agree with the person’s opinion and sentiment toward an ART PIECE, then left a comment essentially saying, “You shouldn’t express that opinion in that tone because I disagree based on how I see it. And I feel like your opinion is wrong because of the opinion of other people in the field (directors who imitated the style). So please revise your method of self-expression.”
Ok. Glad we figured that out. Take care, bud.

In today's era, we have examples like The Raid films, Live-action Rurouni Kenshin films, Daredevil on Netflix, The Night Comes For Us on Netflix, and most importantly, Revenger on Netflix. These serve as good examples of how Batman's fighting should be portrayed, especially during his second year. Lastly, what did you think of The Batman 2022 film overall? It wasn't my cup of tea.

The film "Heat" is absolute garbage-tier storytelling and characterization, and that scene with Pacino/DeNiro in the diner is one of the most absurd parts. Within the space of about 2 minutes Pacino talks about how he's haunted by all the people he couldn't save, while DeNiro talks about how he has absolutely no conscience for all the people he's killed, and Pacino also talks about how he admires DeNiro and doesn't want to take him down, so practically begs him to quit his criminal ways. This is TERRIBLE WRITING. Pacino is given two morally opposite positions to take in the very same scene. And it's not just this scene.
