Same thing happd to me the other day. Beware, don't keep pushing start or it will drain your battery. Dealer said it was a bad brake switch...replaced it for free. Here's a hint to start your car without pressing the break, 1) push in start, 2) let go, 3) push in again and hold for 30 seconds. You can do that any time to start the car without having to press the break. Dealer taught me that trick. Figured I'd pass it on cause there was no fix that I could find online.
Having the same exact issue in my '11 2.0T Limited....took mine to the dealer after this randomly happens. Just told me today they did actually pull an error code (don't know what it was), and stated it was the brake switch. Replacing it under the 60k warranty. Time will tell if this was indeed the gremlin. Seems this is an easy fix and a under $25 part and worth picking up a spare switch if it is the culprit, and definitely a repair easily done at home after warranty runs out. If all is well after some time, I will definitely reply back here in hopes that it may help others down the road. Thanks for the video rdsinsandiego - this was very helpful to me in my research of the same problem!
Been a few weeks now, and so far seems to have been the culprit. Bad brake switch. Will be ordering another to have on hand. If the car is not under warranty, it is a cheap and simple repair to replace it on your own.
@@bigedge8771 Hello, thanks for the information. Did you notice if your brake lights were working when you were having the issue? My brake lights are working but my '13 Hyundai Azera is having the same problem - brake pedal gets stuck, engine won't turn on, but all electronics are working. I'm considering ordering a new brake switch and trying to install myself since there's a 4 week wait to have my car looked at at a dealership, but don't want to spend the time/money if the brake switch obviously isn't the problem if the brake lights are working. Thank you!
This is a very common problem you have a bad brake swich, the only way to fail safe start is to push and HOLD THE START BUTTON TILL IT STARTS. ( I AM A HYUNDAI GOLD CERTIFIED TECH ^.^ hope this helps)
Had the brake switch replaced. Still having this issue. Had the battery replaced. Same issue again. I have used this "workaround" and only had it work once... BEFORE the brake switch was replaced.
I think I might have figured out the problem!! I believe it’s the park neutral switch that out of alignment.. if I put the car back and forth from part to neutral it will start .. I hope this works for you guys it did for me good luck
Literally stuck in the parking lot grocery store , trying to find a video to help me .... this damn car man, smh....waiting for my husband to come save me.
There may be 2 problems. 1. Brake switch is broken. Replace it, it is a $10 part. 2. The transmission inhibitor switch has a problem. Try to press start, step on the brake and cycle the transmission from park to neutral, then press start again to turn off and then press start. If the engine starts in neutral, the inhibitor switch is the problem.
hi Pinoyeh, my 2011 Sonata 2.0T doesn´t show brake pedal problem instead doesn´t detect the key fob inside the car and have to put on the holder to start the car, i did what you say about the put car on Neutral and turn it off, when i push the brake pedal with the key fob on my hand start inmediatly, i guess that is transmission inhibitor switch is the problem, i will try to change it and let you know all if works
ive owned Hyundai products since 2003 the first being a xg350 I put 351k miles on the carwith no warranty work ever performed and no issues at all ive owned several since that car all going over 200k miles with no issues at all I currently own a 2013 veloster turbo have driven it hard for many miles right off the lot and again no issues so far I will continue owning there products
The91489 I'm with you. Have had at least one in the family every year since 1991. Never replaced anything major and the longest running was a 1997 sonata v6 with 400k miles at the time the head gasket blew in September 2013.
I have had this problem and researched the net and tried several things and here are a couple of things I can share you may find helpful. First, a work around that has worked so far. When the red accessory light is on (in the start button), take your foot OFF the brake pedal and hold the start button down steady and in about 10-15 seconds, it will start. Second, when it happens the brake pedal feels like it is pumped (up high) and won't hardly depress. What seems to help prevent this is to be sure to take your foot OFF the pedal for several second after the car is in park before shutting it off. I mention this for two reasons: One, if the pedal is up high I've noticed the brake lights aren't on and second, the dealers are saying the brake switch is working or they've replaced it but if the pedal doesn't go down far enough it won't start, but once it's running it then goes down so you can shift it. (I also mention the shifter since this is the logic used by the service dept. to determine the brake switch is working). Hope This is helpful.
More than likely a brake switch malfunction. There is an open recall on many different models to replace the brake switch. But even still, the brake switch is a common problem even on vehicles not under the recall. Has this switch been replaced?
My wife and I have a 2011 Hyundai sonata limited edition 2.0 turbo and we have the same the same problem. all you have to do is Press the start button once then hold it for a few seconds then it will start. it may take up to ten or 20 seconds before it starts. When you press it make sure that it's blue before you hold it. You don't have to put your foot on the brake when you do this.
so what exactly was wrong with just using a KEY to turn on the car? Stupid push button systems in all cars was a waste of technology. Was it really that inconveniencing for us to just turn a key in the ignition that we were so lazy we wanted to invent a push button start that now takes control away from you and gives it over to electrical controls? So when the electrical controls go out, you are screwed.
Apparently not only Hundai has this problem. I have a Toyota Camry XLE 2009 which suffered the same problem as expressed here. Car in park - push button to start - nothing. display reads "Press brake pedal to start engine." A second attempt yields the same results, and by pressing the brake pedal, it goes to the floor like there is NO hydraulics. A couple more attempts and vehicle started right up. I'm hoping this problem will not surface again, but I am now apprehensive. The battery is relatively new, so I don't believe that to be the problem. Never had this happen to me before. I followed up Toyota (online) to see if someone else had the same experience, but found nothing there. I'll stop in at the dealer and mention it to them, and perhaps they will have an answer for me. As some people mention, the inhibitor switch may be the answer. I hope it is something that is not complicated. Not to mention it was pouring rain and/or what my first words were. I'll post the results and answer from the dealers perspective, and if they have had anything similar to this. Cheers!
My wife's has the push button start and would not start this morning. It would just turn over. My wife had moved it over one spot on our driveway. I went out the first time and tried it with the same it just turns over result. Went back out about 15 minutes later and it just turned over then I noticed the steering wheel was upside down from where she had moved the car over one spot. I turned the wheel so it was rightside up and level and the car started right up.
My mother's car is doing this as we speak, and I tried holding start and it still does not turn ovet??? What a junk car and company. Already had it in the shop and they charged her up for a new battery and wouldn't know, issue came right back with a new battery. Bunch of crooks man. Well filed a complaint so we will see what happens. Thx for the vid.
99.9% sure that you have the brake switch issue, since pressing the Start button for 30 secs started the car. I had this issue last summer. It was easily fixed, and the problem has not repeated itself.
It's the starter. No one mentions the starter. They seem to test ok, but it's the cellinoid that screws up. I think it's a glitch that Hyundai won't address.
These 2011 Sonata have a problem with the brake light switch. Even if the brakes are still comming on, it still can be a short in this switch. There was a recall on these switches so if you get it to the dealer they will fix it. If you dont have the time luxary of waiting on the dealer to fix it, its a $20 part at Oreilly.
Same thing happened to me 2 years ago I took my vehicle to Hyundai for recall I had no issues they kept my car for a month for head gasket alternator change out and when they return my vehicle it had a bunch of service lights and would not start properly and they claim this was not their problem
yes , its true ...we need to press the brake pedal 6 times and then press the ignition ...when the cluster showing all the lights then hold the brake and press the start button for 10 to 12 secs..it will start...
My 2010 gen coupe same problem. I replaced break switch and nothing. I replace starter relay nothing. Hold start button for 30 seconds still nothing just lights and indicators. Wth should I do?
I'm going through the same problem right now with my Genesis 2010 coupe. This is the 8th time in 4 years. Pretty much the same story, The dealer's scanner doesn't show anything at all so they won't fix it, Ain't the battery, changed it 2 months ago and it's high on energy. Everytime it happened the car had been outside (under the sun), so I'm starting to believe that heat is a factor. A couple of hours later, when it cools down, it starts again. Don't know if it's a sensor or something else that the heat might be damaging.
I have the same issue only when the car is hot wait an hour or so car cools down it starts, I did see a suggestion it could be the brake pedal switch relay, I will replace this next.
I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra Limited...mine has the push button start and I am having the same issue with starting. I did have a dead battery but even after replacing the battery, it started doing it again; one thing that worked for me was to put it in Neutral with my foot on the brake and it starts right up! Appt tomorrow morning with the dealership to see if they can figure out what to do to fix it..otherwise, love the car!
I have a 2018 Sonata and this has happened numerous times, especially when it is cold outside. Last time NOTHING I tried worked...I tried to push the hard brake pedal down, I yanked on the steering wheel which was very stiff and not moving much, literally pushed the car back and forth, slid the gear from park to drive and back, tried to jump start, use the keyfob to depress the start button....nothing - tried at least 15+ times trying various tricks...Had the car towed to dealership and the diagnostics did not discover an issue. Hyundia dealership replaced the brake switch. Today, two days later (32 degrees) the same issue happened again, the brake pedal is hard and will not start just like the video. However, I was lucky and it took me 5 tries and it started...next time who knows what trick will allow it to start. I wish there was an override to start the car.
Its a switch in the vrake you can try push the brake and push and hold the button for 30sec and it should start I have the same problem with my kia sorento
I have a 2012 Genesis and this has happened to me many times - so frustrating. I had taken it to Hyundai but they could find nothing wrong. I recently wrote to the headquarters explaining my frustration and they suggested I take it back in. I did to no avail. This invariably happens when I have an important appointment not when I am just going out for a ride! In researching I found mention of the brake pedal sensor as it locks up when i press the brake, but - Hyundai says there still is no problem. Woe is me!
Having the same problem with my 2011 Sonata Limited. Bought it not even a year ago with 30k miles on it and it started acting up a couple months ago. Happens every couple of days or so. When it happens the only way it will start for me is if I put it in neutral. but that's a 50/50. *took it to the dealership 3 days ago to have brake lamp switch replaced (lady said that was what was causing it not to start) woke up today, didn't start. Neutral with brake pressed started it . Pissed.
Just happened to me over the weekend. Foot on brake, all the aux lights, air and radio went on but the engine would not turn over. Also, the button would not turn everything on, off. Had the car towed to Hyundai and they checked it out and said the battery was too weak to start the engine. Needed new battery. Actually the first thing I thought of when I had difficulty entering keyless but I am skeptical on the whole push button thing and wish there were a key backup.
i got hyundai accent 1997 and onli now giving me a problem if i press the brake hard the engine dies, but if i press smothly no problem, thats why im looking here in you tube it myght got the same problem and how to fix it... i love my hyundai
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but did you have your foot on the brake when you did this? I pushed the button once to put it in accessory mode, then pressed the brake and held down the start button for 30 seconds and nothing happened. I also did the same thing without my foot on the brake and got the same result. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong. Thank you!
i have 2013 Hyundai sonata and the engine won't start when i use the key and turn on the switch everything works but the engine a person said the signal is not working and now i am having it checked right now
It could be a problem with the inhibitor switch, it's a feature that tells the car what gear it's in. The problem is that it's telling the car it's in Drive (or lower gear) when it's really in Park. Before starting the car, try wiggling the shifter.
+Tyrone Jones I read your response and was amazed that you're doing exactly what I'm doing (wiggling the shifter). The problem has been like this from day 1 of purchase. Did you fix the inhibitor switch? And if so, did that correct the problem? Melani

Thanks ;) My hynudai sonata 2011 it's just did it again like copple of min before. It was on Parkin and I just change it to Nutral and start.. What do you think it is.! I ask and they toll me the it's the transmission sensor ?
Open the door. Close the door. Lock it. unlock it. Open door.Close door. Starts right up. This usually happens to me when I don't close the door all the way shut.
I had this crap happen to me just last night, I called KEY Hyundai in Jacksonville fl and they said there is no known problem with the car. I was sooo pissed. Finnally got it started after 17 min of playing with it. Brake will be hard with no hydrolic feel
I have the same problem with my 2011 Sonata. Three times stranded! first time I fixed it , blown out starter and relay. Then I got stranded a 2nd time and realized that there was a recall, took it to Hyundai and they fixed the 5 recalls and got it to start somehow, but I got stranded again two nights ago. I'm livid at myself for ever looking at this terrible car.
Happened to me several times. Had the brake switch replaced, then they said it was a dead battery. Just got that replaced 2 months ago. Having the problem again today. This really needs to be taken care of!
I would have someone else look at it cause i have some issue with my sonata and i got it fix.Or i would spray some wd 40 on the switch to see if that would work and get the car started
Had similar problem with my 2012 Elantra. Like you said, Hyundai won't fix something unless they can reproduce it. Finally got mine to "act up" where Hyundai could check it. It was the inhibitor switch - the switch that won't let you start the car in gear. As a work around, you can use a key to release the shift lever and move it into Neutral and then try starting it.
OMG I am dealing with this problem but with my Kia Optima SXL 2013. It has done it 4 times to me. And Kia said it must be my alarm so they are taking it out and they replaced my sensor on my brake.
Same shit happened to my 2011 sonata yesterday.... It sucks i bought a new battery I was thinking it was a battery problem then i changed the battery and the car is not starting yet
I asked the dealership if they are going to continue to replace the brake switch for free. They said until it is out of warranty! Then it's out of my pocket! REALLY?????? I am waiting on a tow to pick it up tomorrow morning...since it's Jan.1!
so i recently had this problem with my hyundai I40 wagon, apperantly the battery in your key is dead and once in a while it wont give enough signal to start. simple fix: replace key battery. =)
Hyundai claims to have certified and expert mechanics. I guess not. Hyundai's site says it has 6,000 dealerships worldwide yet they have no clue what is causing your car problem! "Can't duplicate it." It is of no consolation to go to another dealer because they will look your car up in the computer and repeat what the previous dealer said. An independent mechanic will do the inspection for a fee will probably tell you to take it back to the dealer. Try the Better Business Bureau Autoline? LOL.
This just happened to me with my 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe. My dad fixed it by waiting till the button was on (not starting) hold the brake in as much as you can, move the gear out of park and down to drive and then quickly push it back up to park. After this my car started right away :)
Little trick, hit the start button and then hit again and hold for 20 seconds, car will start. And then if it wont go into r or d stick a screw driver or something similar in the shift lock release to put it in r or d. Currently having to do this until I get the new switch put in. NEVER A HYUNDAI AGAIN!!
Hey, I open and close the door to get the auto start button to work. I have 2014 Velostor and no one can fix it. Called Public Relations and Customer Service and they don't care! They just say go to dealer and talk to the shop guys who never heard of this. Sent this link to Hyundai. They should be ashame of themselves. South Korean cars and there customer service is not worth it. I would never buy another one from them!! Kia or Hyun-do-doi!
mario evans I agree, I bought my first Hyundai and it will be my last. we live in a world were technology is advanced to make life better and faster, unfortunately customer service has gone backwards, you book the for service and all they do is change the oil and anything else you want fixed they tell you we couldn't replicate the problem or we can't find the problem or bring the car back and we'll have another look when they have had the car all day. They call them selves technicians, my ass they are, SHIT HEADS would be better name. Never buy a Hyundai.
Same problem with my NISSAN Sentra. I personally, slam the $#!t out of the break repeatedly until “Push Break” sign turns off I start the car like that. Every day. It’s a 2018 Sentra. 👎🏼
Goo Obaka surely you can google and see that this is across the board with all makers, right??? Every maker with a push button behaves this way. It's all part of the same ignition circuitry so your comment is pretty pointless.
Had a problem with my car too. Can’t start. I press the start button for 30sec as said but nothing happened. It’s almost 2h waiting and keep doing the same thing.
This has been infuriating for me for more than three years. Happens in my garage, at the store, at friends house with kids in the car, tired and wanting to go home. I recently crawled under the dash and wiggled the brake light switch. It worked and has continued to work every time. I ordered a new switch online for $14.00 Easy to replace yourself.

This may be related to the Hyundai recall for brake petal light malfunction. Notices go out in June.
Any luck figuring out the problem?
I never saw a car with so many problems
Woe is me!
The brake pedal switch/relay needs to be replaced.
this will solve the issue
14.00 dollar brake light switch
located under the brake pedal
Having the same problem with my 2011 Sonata Limited. Bought it not even a year ago with 30k miles on it and it started acting up a couple months ago. Happens every couple of days or so. When it happens the only way it will start for me is if I put it in neutral. but that's a 50/50. *took it to the dealership 3 days ago to have brake lamp switch replaced (lady said that was what was causing it not to start) woke up today, didn't start. Neutral with brake pressed started it . Pissed.
I had the same issue and same fix. I just make sure that I press the brake when I turn the car off. Has seemed to prevent the issue so far.
did you have the smart key fab on you, that is why it won't start up
Just happened to me over the weekend.
If you hold the star button for 30 seconds it overrides the brake safety and starts the car. Had same issue with my car. It was the brake switch
Thank you!
@@blegism you may a different issue. Or they disabled that override
@@robertfehlman7781 thanks for your response - I appreciate it!
Same problem with both the car and the dealer. new batteries in the key fobs fixed it for me.
i have 2013 Hyundai sonata and the engine won't start when i use the key and turn on the switch everything works but the engine a person said the signal is not working and now i am having it checked right now
It could be a problem with the inhibitor switch, it's a feature that tells the car what gear it's in. The problem is that it's telling the car it's in Drive (or lower gear) when it's really in Park. Before starting the car, try wiggling the shifter.
had to switch the ignition switch for a new have not the problem ever-since
+Tyrone Jones I read your response and was amazed that you're doing exactly what I'm doing (wiggling the shifter). The problem has been like this from day 1 of purchase. Did you fix the inhibitor switch? And if so, did that correct the problem?
Melani
How to fix this problem
Same problem
Hyundai sonata 2011 2.0t
Won't start !!
You guys I need help
Hope This is helpful
Thanks ;)
My hynudai sonata 2011 it's just did it again like copple of min before.
It was on Parkin and I just change it to Nutral and start..
What do you think it is.!
I ask and they toll me the it's the transmission sensor ?
B. Roth thanks for sharing this is very helpful.
yeah im having electrical problems with my hyundai... im tempted to get a toyota....
ImMADasAMeatAxe I just told my husband next car I get will be a Toyota. 4th time my cars electrical has mess up
Open the door. Close the door. Lock it. unlock it. Open door.Close door. Starts right up. This usually happens to me when I don't close the door all the way shut.
its funny because I did the same thing!!
Peter Rodriguez how many miles?
Peter Rodriguez it's the push button, a very bad feature. Stick with key ignitions.
Happened to me several times. Had the brake switch replaced, then they said it was a dead battery. Just got that replaced 2 months ago. Having the problem again today. This really needs to be taken care of!
they're masters at avoiding fixing problems- next time don't go with a hyundai please!
The immobilizer light is your clue.
I have the same problem. The Hyundai dealer replaced the break switch back in Dec 2012 but here I am stuck in random parking lot waiting for the toll.
Same shit happened to my 2011 sonata yesterday.... It sucks i bought a new battery I was thinking it was a battery problem then i changed the battery and the car is not starting yet
Exact same issue with my 2011 sonata, the problem ended up being the transmission inhibitor switch
hyundai wouldnt help me fix my veloster 2013.....phone vsa ,,vehicle saftey authority if u have one there,,,,and try to get your money back
Put car in neutral to start it tell them the inhibitor switch is broken!
i have same problem and dont know what to do
press and hold 10 sec
dude...you just saved my ass
Cooper Vynx maybe your brake sensor in your car is not good
Thanks, it's worked with me
Worked for me thanks!
Just worked for me, you’re awesome
It a problem just hold start button down it will start after 1 min or 2
Hyundai claims to have certified and expert mechanics. LOL.
Mine won't start and it's not push button
Look at the comment below.. It worksss
1 press 2 let go 3 press for 30 sec
Thanks, it worked
Its usually due to the car battery going flat. So you will need to jump start the car. This should solve the problem.
I have the same issue with my 2014 ford explorer
I have a Toyota Camry hybrid and it just started doing the same thing!!!!!
Actually just received the recall paperwork a year after it was already fixed.
ok can stop grunting and being all dramatic about turning the steering wheel...The car is not on so of course you don't have power steering..
car is 3 years old, if you've never replaced the battery in the transmiter that's probably it.
its the brake sensor
hold the button down for thirty seconds
I had the same issue with my 2014 Hyundai coupe Genesis. Turned out I needed a new battery.
battery for the remote or battery for the car?
I personally, slam the $#!t out of the break repeatedly until “Push Break” sign turns off
I start the car like that. Every day. It’s a 2018 Sentra. 👎🏼
Think this is why I will stick with keys.
Yeah
Congratulations Korea quality
Boo Obaka this could happen to any car brand. go hug your Honda
Goo Obaka surely you can google and see that this is across the board with all makers, right??? Every maker with a push button behaves this way. It's all part of the same ignition circuitry so your comment is pretty pointless.
Goo Obaka HYUNDAI'S ARE GOOD CARS I HAVE A SONATA NO PROBLEMS
Press and hold the start button for 20 seconds
RECALL!!! Engine needs replaced....could cause crash.
Had a problem with my car too. Can’t start. I press the start button for 30sec as said but nothing happened. It’s almost 2h waiting and keep doing the same thing.
Im not really a car expert but i guess you could get a new car. Not a Hyundai just like a Ford or something.
The problem reason is the Battery renew it and thats it
This has been infuriating for me for more than three years. Happens in my garage, at the store, at friends house with kids in the car, tired and wanting to go home. I recently crawled under the dash and wiggled the brake light switch. It worked and has continued to work every time. I ordered a new switch online for $14.00 Easy to replace yourself.
Lmfaoo hahahaha I can relate and it sucks asaz
buy trabant trabi havent got problems with the pedals :D
maybe fill your hydraulic tank?
jajajaja this car has electronic power steering or EPS no hydraulic power steering
I had the same problem with my Sonata at 16k miles and now again at 36k! I
U need to have the keyless remote with u
Put key in manually. It’ll start
There's nowhere to insert the key
Not a good get away car! Thought that car was a great deal! I guess not?
Very easy, just hold the push button for 15 seconds it will start.
Btw guys 2011 was the first year of this new design most of this is corrected with the 2012
My 2012 is doing it
My 2012 is as well
