Video showing the issues with our 2011 Kia Sorento push button start problems. This will show you how to keep from getting stranded. This same issue occurs in other Kia vehicles. The problem appears to be with the brake switch not allowing the vehicle to start. I am showing you how to easily bypass the brake switch and proceed to start the vehicle (Do so at your own risk). Also note that after the vehicle starts you may have to press the brake switch really hard to get the car into gear the first time.
As with all work-arounds you are doing this at your own risk. My vehicle did not have any issues and ran as expected once the vehicle was started. However once shut off, the vehicle again had to be over-ridden to start back up.
It is off for warranty repair now and I will update once I get the diagnostic information back from Kia.
** It was the brake switch and was replaced (reluctantly by my lame Kia dealership) under warranty. **

I experienced this with my Kia Forte. The problem is with the brake switch. Cheap to replace. Had it replaced but same fault. Replaced it again and so far no problem.
The video's suggestion should be used only in an emergency. What it does is to push voltage into the system to start the car. Do this often and you may damage the car's ECU. this was what I learned from my mechanic.
My Optima does this. Not all the time though. When it does NOT start the button is lit up green but if I press it a second time it finally starts. The 10 Second button hold is a good way to start it if it fails too. You can also put your Key FOB into the key slot located in the Glove Box. That works if your key FOB battery is dead.

it did. there was a recall. the dealership fixed it, and we haven't had a problem with it since.
My wife's 2011 Sorento has the same issue with keyless push button start. Page 5-11 in the Owner's manual said that the problem may be a blown Stop Lamp fuse, but the fuse checked out fine. It also shows how to start vehicle by bypassing brake pedal. My 2009 Mazda6 also uses push button start, but I've never had a problem like this (other than battery going dead in keyfob). Thanks for confirming that this is a Kia issue I'm taking it back to dealer pronto!

THANK YOU!! My wife's Sorento has been doing this on and off, but tonight it really stranded us. I called Kia Roadside and asked if there was anything we could try to start the car manually (because I did not think it was a battery issue), and they said no. So, they dispatched a truck to try a jump, and then a tow if needed. While I was waiting, I found your video, tried the procedure and presto! So, I'm really not sure what the tow truck would have done...??
Did the brake sensor resolve your issue? I didn't have an issue prior to the brake sensor being replaced. However, now the car won't start (sometimes) and it has thrown a history code related to the transmission range sensor, not covered under warranty. I'm considering attempting a recall complaint to get this resolved if others are having this issue.

Wish I'd seen this a week ago. Recently bought one and one day wouldn't start. Called AAA cause I had to get to work. He was a bit clueless at first, but got it started. Not sure how. He figured the car wasn't accepting the fob signal.....i dunno. But this is really good to know. Thank you!. I think if I get another one I want a key start.
Thanks for the info. It enabled us to get the car to the garage. As it turns out, it was only the battery in the key ring remote.

I have a 2014 Kia Sorento that will not start. I am not getting the orange light to by pass the break and the break pedal is too hard to push in to start the car. I bought the car used in Feb. 2015 and it broke down the beginning of Oct. 2015 and was in the shop at the Kia Dealership for 3 months. I was hesitant to buy a Kia and I should have followed my instincts. I am totally disgusted with the car now although it's fully loaded and I was really enjoying all of the features. I pray that someone will do right by me and replace the car. Otherwise I will trade it and never buy a Kia product again....not even a key chain. Very unhappy customer!
Hopefully you got it figured out. Kia really is a good car product. I'm on my second Kia Optima. Anyway I had this issue this morning, the push start wouldn't start but I had some lights not sure if they were orange the dashboard lite up but the brake was hard and would not press down (it felt like the car wasn't in park but it actually was in park so I put the car in Neutral and pressed the button it started right up... we had our rear break lights replaced last weekend no problem before then with start up. This may be related to the break switch I'm going to call the service manager at Kia to see if they will make this right.
Great to know! Thanks man! I haven't tried it out yet but the difference between mine and yours is that mine turns green when I have the foot down. Normally it turns yellow, as if you were only pushing the button. This tells me that its reading the brake sensor at least to some degree.

Just ran into this problem..but once I go to hold the push start button, the car turns off... I do one push and the light turns orange,..push it once again and it turns green...i go to hold the button down, and it shuts off... Checked the battery, alternator, etc etc... In my case it was the brake limit switch and was fixed the first time I took it in. Initially I had to argue with them to replace it because they said it was nothing wrong with it. I have not had any further problems since. Roughly 35K miles and counting.

thank you SO much for posting this! we've only every had this problem a few times in the last 6 months or so, and always when the other car was out. thank goodness it hasn't done it away from home. other than this issue, i love our kia (rhonda's her name, 'cause she's red and pretty! haha)! thanks again, though. you saved my son from having to sit for a couple of hours 'til my hubby could pick him up.

I have a 2011 EX Sorento (push start), and have been dealing with my (car not starting off, and on, for over 1 1/2 now.) Car has been towed in today, and three weeks ago for same problem. Dealership says nothing wrong, and cannot duplicate problem. I've put a complaint in with NHTSA, and Consumer Affairs of Kia. I have done my research, and think it might be "brake switch", but will wait to see what dealership says. My husband is wanting to do a lemon law, on the car now.
I have a 2011 Kia Sorrento 6 speed with a key ignition. What is a trick or tip to get it started? Or could it be the brake sensor? and how much does each of those costs ignition switch? and a brake sensor?
If it was the brake switch did you brake lights work when stepping on the peddal.. im having issues with 2014 forte as soon as my ESC light came on I notice I did bot have any brake lights.. this is covered by the waranty right?
For some reason my 2011 Sportage is not on the list. Missed it by one year. However, I brought it in and they said it was the "inhibitor switch" which was replaced. However the same issue happened again so now I have a loaner. No idea what's wrong with it.
I have a 2015 Kia sorento V6 SX 3.3L with 139,000 on it. I had three of those misfire codes along with P0019 Crankshaft sensor B and P0024 Camshaft posistion timing (Bank 2) codes. All these fired at the same exact time. I changed the oil, replaced the battery, and all of the other parts. Now when I try to press the brake to start the car it is very stiff and the car will not start. I tired the bypass method but it does not work. Something is wrong because when you initially push the start button (no foot on the brake) it turns orange. Then if you push the start button (no foot on the brake) it should turn GREEN. My ONLY turns red. What could be the issue? It was starting fine until i replaced all this stuff.

In your 2nd scenario I tried that I hear the car cranking but no start.
But I noticed this car starting problem happens when I don't start the car after 3-4 days in parked.
When I use it every day no problems .
Problem with the battery ?
Battery is less than 30 months old.any advice?

Great video! This will be my second time replacing this stupid switch. I wish kia would put out a better switch that would last. Granted its only about $13 and about 10 min of work but damn you really have to slide upside down under the pedals to get to it. But great video!
Why they added this is beyond me, I prefer a key, its not that hard to put a key in a lock and turn it. All these new cars with the start/stop technology to save fuel in a few years will be in trouble, its just more stuff to go wrong.
I absolutely love this feature on my '17 Sportage. In fact, this feature was the main reason I got rid of my old car, an '08 RAV4. Got tired of having to dig in my pockets for the key, and remember which pocket they were in. Even worse when your hands are full. Now it doesn't matter which pocket my keys are in. Just hop in, push the button, and go!

Yeah, might be convenient but when the system fails, you are in for an expensive surprise at the dealer or any mechanic... plus, what do those keyless fobs have hidden? A normal key to open your car door!!!
@@carlomango407 that's in case if ur fob is dead. Why would we want to get in our car if the fob is dead? What if we have batteries in the car for the fob. There, I answered your question

Hi Bryan, We are experiencing the same problem with our 2011 Sorento and have had the brake swith replaced twice but problem continues to happen. Did your dealer fix the problem and what was the fix? The Kia dealer where we live did'nt know about the by pass to start the car that you show in your video. Thanks for that. They wanted us to tow the car to the shop when this problem occurs. I think they know there is a big problem with their cars but won't admit it.
Darren H mine did it also. They replaced the brake switch and now I find if I pull it out of park and push it back into park it will start right up.

I'd love to know what's going on with your vehicle ymcadude123. The break sensor has been replaced in mine and at that time I had no issues starting my car. Since it's been replaced I've had continual problems starting my car. It's thrown a code twice in the history setting for a transmission range sensor. Of course, it's under warranty but since it's an external part it's not covered. I've seen hundreds of youtube videos saying that they have problems starting their car, recall possible?

i have a 04 kia sorento somtimes driving it or just strating it the battery light will come on and brake light and it will not be charging the car then when u shut it off it wont start is the anti theft or???please help any one

I am having this problem with my 2012 Kia Sorento LX, and when I try the bypass, my car shuts off before it can start. I can't hold in the button for more than a few seconds without it just shutting off completely......any ideas? If I have to take it to a dealership, I would like to be able to drive it there instead of having it towed.
Shari Ryan oh wow..experiencing the same problem...i tried to 20 second hold (and it cuts off), i tried starting it in neutral and I tried putting the Key in the charger and changed the battery..car still wont start. What was your issue

@@2dda It actually was my car battery. That's why the bypass trick wouldn't work me. Its crazy because all my stuff worked, the lights, radio, air conditioner, horn and all. But it was still my battery

I checked the service records and Kia replaced the brake limit switch both times we had it in for service. They want us to leave the car with them for a few days until the problem occurs so they can see it with their own eyes. I'll never buy Kia again.

Thank you Bryan. I'm glad this is officially a recall, but I'm also really pissed at Kia at the same time. I've had our car there 3 times for this, each time butting heads with them and them more or less saying it's "User Error." You should see how much it pleases my wife to have someone tell her she doesn't know how to start her car...LOL. Thanks again, now at least we have some ammo for these douches at the dealer.
My car does this same thing except when I hold it it just cuts off. Sometimes it cranks, sometimes it doesn’t. I replaced the battery in the key fob, it had gas, battery is fine, everything is fine so idk what it could be.

By reading almost every comment in several of these forums, by putting the car in neutral and having it start right up, your problem was the park switch, not the brake switch. Good to know!
