Tommy was the one who got me started on double kick drums. Back in the day he had an instructional VHS tape and I learned so much from it. His quads and triplets are not that complicated but can be combined with any part of the kit and make it sound like there is so much going on but really there isn't. He actually said that people thought he was doing so much more but he wasn't. Basically it was the same patterns just variations of it and on different parts of the kit. His most important teaching was to stay consistent on the left kick as you were on the right. He demonstrated how the left kick always sounded weaker in a basic double bass drum pattern. He encouraged practicing very slow drills with the both feet because it was harder to maintain perfect steady consistency than playing fast. Man was he right! I would cramp up and have to take breaks from his drills but I developed an even double bass sound and insane strength on both kicks. It even helped my faster playing later on. Tommy is in top shape for a man his age. He is an avid cyclist and for the most part stayed away from the garbage that took so many great musicians from us. Tommy will always be my #1 role model as a drummer.
Tommy just turned 70 a couple of days ago. He's the only drummer in history playing double bass drum solos on tour at that age. He's such an important drummer! Always on tour, always giving it all, always with such fire!🔥🥁🎶
This man is the main reason I still listen to Ozzy's live "Speak of the Devil" album to this day. I love the other guys & Ozzy, but to hear what Aldridge does with the old Sabbath tunes is absolutely sweet; especially "The Wizard".
@@ka-pop2243 .. I agree that Aldridge is a damn fine drummer, but to say there are NO BETTER on the planet is a bit subjective. I remember him with Black Oak Arkansas wearing those red Suspenders, sitting low behind those clear light blue drums, flipping those sticks!!! He’s awesome and quite a showman!
Got the opportunity to see him at Bogotá, touring with Whitesnake and Scorpions. What a privilege see this legend performing live, his drum solo was amazing.
I grew up in J-town. I heard that Tommy is from Pearl. Then there's Keith Carlock from Clinton (Steely Dan)... Remember George's Drum Shop off Northview?
His ability to blend the kicks in fills ads such dynamic flare and punch. Always tasteful. Tribute blew me away and there’s some smokin fills on Speak of the Devil too.
5 seconds and you realize why He's Tommy Aldridge and you're no: MASTER! Tasteful, open sounding, HEAVY yer melodic and on the pocket Hard-Hitting Hard Rock! Legend, as always.
That was the ‘Bark at the Moon’ Tour 11/83-1/85. Carmine Appice played on the European tour and some of of the north American tour up until February 20th, ‘84. Aldridge started on March 4, 84 in Rosemont and finished out the tour.
Well. The master at work. I just love the way he " Silences" the Cymbals. I'm not a drummer, ( Keyboardplayer) but this is just a really great piece of work to watch. :-)
One of the greatest "live" rock drummers I've seen. Pull up any live Whitesnake from the 80's and Ozzy, you will see and hear how a drummer leads the band. I sat behind Tommy's drum riser in 1988 during the big Whitesnake tour and he was a beast. He's 71 this year. This video does not showcase Tommy's talents. It's just a soundcheck. Go watch the entire PASIC performance. Watch at 7:15 when he drops his sticks and shows his signature bare-handed playing. Agreed, not the most technical drummer to walk the earth, but definitely one of the most influential rock performers of the past 40-years... Haters are gonna hate - to each his/her own. Hope to make 70 years of age some day, let alone play at a level like Tommy Aldridge.
I love Tommy. I have his 1st drum video. VHS of course. The nicest thing I can say about him is…I’ve met people who play drums and fans who don’t. They say he’s their favorite. That beats everything if anybody says it. Legend.
I completely agree. It seems like the producers neutered parts of his double bass playing when he would go on the studio especially on the Ozzy stuff. Hes done some things on sharpnel records with Tony macalpine and a few other shredder guitar player guys but I agree it's hard to tell it's him... Although on the live Pat Travers record from the seventies it's completely obvious it's him.
He absolutely had his own sound...LOVE the solo work he does, always can pick him out...gonna be a very sad bad when he isn't with us anymore like neil peart.

He must’ve read the Oxygen Advantage.
His soundchecks are better than other drummer's solos.

Carmine , Billy , Narada still there

I saw him with Ozzy ,Diary tour and then with Whitesnake when they backed up Motley Crue in the late 80's ,blew me away man!
Jeez , the length of his legs. I don't even go that far on my holidays
I saw him when he was 14 in the Hullabaloo in Jackson, MS. Was a phenom even then. Played a beautiful blue sparkle set of Rogers drums.

He sits soooo low. That would kill me to play like that.
I had backache when I saw it.
Not to mention the hight of his toms and hi hat
I know!? Is he tall??
It made me uncomfortable to even look at him playing while sitting so low! Obviously works for him - one of the greats!
He’s only 5’ 2”.
Remember seeing him w/ Pat Travers mid '70's good 2 see he's still going U knw..he & Neil P. badass drummers..
