    For the conversation around 49:00 about merging - I absolutely agree with you guys. Use the entire lane, then merge just before it ends. This applies to lanes ending normally as well, not just when they're closed for construction or accidents. If they wanted you to switch lanes a kilometre or two earlier, that's where they would've ended/closed the lane. There's a video (I believe from Half as Interesting) about the zipper merge and why it makes everything faster overall, even though the same number of cars are going through the merge point either way
    There's also a bridge in the city near me that has construction happening on it. There are signs that explicitly say "USE BOTH LANES", then another one farther ahead that says "BEGIN MERGING HERE". People don't listen, and still switch to the left lane way before. I listened to the signs, drove to the merge point, and merged into a perfect gap without needing to stop, instead of waiting 5+ minutes for the line of traffic to clear if I had switched when everybody else did
    A basic driver's training course should be mandatory as part of getting your license, and it needs to include both the zipper merge, and roundabouts/traffic circles. Nobody around here knows how either one works

    • @enisra_bowman
      @enisra_bowman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the "late merge" isn't even that uncommon in continental europe and has the simple logic that you waste road capacity if you merge early
      sadly, despite that this is covered in driving lessons, to many are just to dumb, same with the "Rettungsgasse" Concept, you may look that up here but not "Bild" Videos, they are just full of hate
      so ye, lorrie drivers know the road, but are not without errors

    The GT-R isn't a supercar, but it was designed to beat them. The thing was faster than the equivalent supercars of it's era but was a quarter of the price.
    I recall watching a documentary about the GT-R's development, and the lead designer said "Those who believe that a rear-engine layout and being lightweight is the only way to be fast are but amateurs".

    • @Doc-88

      "Supercar killer" is the best designation. Turbo S probably fits well under that category as well, along with Corvettes, SL65s, and some others that don't spring to mind.

    • @Ben-rq5re
      @Ben-rq5re 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There's so many factors that go into these classifications, but for 'supercar' I think you have to also consider the overall production output of the marque - Nissan could make the fastest car ever, but it will never be a true supercar because they produce nearly a million vehicles a year. Same with the Ford GT. There has to be an air of exotica and exclusivity about the overall brand for a model to be considered a true supercar..

    • @Flared
      @Flared 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Ben-rq5re I agree with the exotica and exclusivity points. They are the same reasons why the Porsche 911 isn't a supercar. So many have been made over the last 60 years.

    46:15 this bit about keeping cars in storage just to watch them depreciate resonates with why I feel the McLaren W1 isn't as impressive as it maybe ought to be. To me that car, being as limited as it is (399 only), reading that every single car in that series was sold-out on launch, knowing that they're being bought as interest farmers and not as drivable cars, makes the W1 feel far too exclusive to be cool or interesting to me.

    In the village where I grew up was, randomly, a sports car dealer, who alongside selling Morgans & Lotus', had the same M600 that went on Top Gear back in the 00's.
    At the time, that was dream car, and the idea it was just sat openly in a garage in my village was insane. The same car Clarkson had thrashed, M600 GB.
    Countless weekends were spent just staring at was the most insane car, not the prettiest, but just raw old school proper motoring horsepower.
    The garage shut down in the early 2010's, and a few years later I worked in that shop after it became a big standard Nisa Local, and the tills were EXACTLY where the M600 stood.
    I still got goosebumps years later.
    Also, weirdly, the only place I've ever seen a Renault Avantine in the flesh was on sale outside there.

    Hey guys, love the content.
    Always admired the GTR and have a few that go around near where I live, which always puts a smile on my face.
    My car want of late has been the Alpine A110s or a TTRS. I currently have a diesel remapped RCZ which I absolutely adore. Fairly quick, looks decent and the space is immense for carrying things (Unless you are carrying more than 1 passenger as anyone in the back will be crushed). I used to have a Abarth 124 spider which was amazing but very small petrol tank.
    So now I am constantly debating whether I want something similar shaped to the RCZ but quicker or I want something as head turning as the 124 with an equal 'Rarity factor'.
    Keen to hear your thoughts on rare sports cars that are head turners but not over the top for budget.
    Take care

    My dad has a Datsun Cherry coupe from 1982 and its a rare one it's the only coupe in my country (the netherlands) and the way it's owned is insane 1: too preserve it he never drives it in the rain (because it is an 80's japanese car if you don't it will rust away in 2 years) but the guy he bought it from did it even more extreme, if he had a mot check up planned and it was raining he wouldn't go and callen "it's raining and I don't want it to rust i'll come tomorrow.'' And when he was done washing it he whould let it dry in a heated garage with the doors and everything open to be sure that nothing whould rust. it's insame the amount of care that car had.

    Feel Ben's pain. My gearbox once stuffed itself on the motorway coming home just after a service. As it turns out filling the gearbox fluid up to max had washed metal shavings off the top, which then worked their way into the base of it and jammed it completely. Had to get towed back and spent weeks trying to find a new gearbox that would fit the car.
    Was very much a high to low moment in life. Out of work early, nice day so had the roof down, in the fast lane then bang stuck on the hard shoulder dreading the inevitable bill that was coming.

      Conrods can be weaker on N/A cars. Valve train components too. Compression ratio is usually higher with N/A cars. ECU tune will be totally different and not suited for boost pressure.
      You could boost your MX5 with a turbo. You'd need good quality parts, to have it run reliably. I'd pay more for a good quality standalone ECU and a decent tune. Honestly, you can take it as far as your wallet allows. The key with a car being reliable is good thermal management. Keeping heat out of where it shouldn't be, and fluids where they should be.

    Forum question here. Why do you need to replace the timing belt after it snaps or breaks? Like I’ve never understood what happens to the engine like why can’t you just put another one back on and be fine

    • @zknarc
      @zknarc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because it will lunch the engine in the process of snapping as it synchronises the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft.

    • @jrbuch
      @jrbuch 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some engines are interference engines. If the timing belt snaps, the valves will hit the pistons and byebye engine. Some engines aren't interference, so you can just slap another belt on and go.

    Forum question:
    How do you judge what kind of milage on a car is in good enough to buy and drive without much issues,? Is it completely dependent on the model/engine etc, or is there a general rule of thumb like "don't buy cars over 120k miles cause they'll break"?

    Garaged cars for an investment seems weird to me too, but i'd love to see a Countach on the road these days. Obviously probably just needs a trip to Dubai.. but then i'd also be in Dubai.
    Saying that, I love my cars (diesels) and will be sad when they eventually stop existing. The dream is to have an engine exit exhaust diesel by 2035.

    Ive got a question:
    So basically i was looking at a new car and saw that it can have a 1.6 or a 1.8 i4, how do manufacturers get more capacity out of their engines even with the same number of cylinders? And as a follow up how does the 1.8 make less power than the 1.6?

    Just adding to what you guys were saying about the car hobby being the 'best worst' hobby. I think it's the fact that just everyday people use cars. Something that's your hobby is what someone else uses to get from A to B. Like Clarkson said on old Top Gear, if you have no interest in something, you're no good at it. So you go out for a chill evening drive after a long week and you get some prius driving 45 on an empty 60. It'd be like someone with no interest turning up to a golf range and just fucking about.
