I 100% agree with Will on the carpets, proper OEM fitted mats are a must, you definitely would wear the carpet out, I have worn mats out plenty of times
On the topic of the Brunei family's car collection, on FB marketplace the other week, one of their old E30 325is came up for sale, 325i, with a genuine rare BBS body kit on it. Really good condition, does need some wiring and interior work, but could have potential. I didnt quite know the extent on their car collection or the history of their story. But know knowing this and with Edwin saying he would like to own one of their cars, i think it would be an amazing project and piece of history to own
That was probably the best argument section yet, I was rolling on the floor in laughter. And I'm with Will. Wore out the drivers floor mat and replaced it with a sheet of rubber because mud.
Literally this. Love you both but will so right. Got a hole on a fresh floor mat in 45k miles / 5 years of motor way driving. I would definitely be into the insulation on the floor without it 😆
Totally on William side about the floor carpets. I've been burned once - never going to buy a car that's owner did not use any floormats or if it's been all season long the carpet mats, not rubber mats in winter etc.
Edwin is just arguing for the sake of the argument, obviously.. Anyone who bought a used car and seen the wear on the floor mats or managed to solve toddler puzzles (putting the triangle piece in the triangle hole and round one in the round hole) can see why floor mats are needed.
Can I just say the Brunei story time is my absolute favourite thing you’ve done. Love the podcast anyway but this is the kind of thing I’d sit and watch a hour long video on so hearing it on the best motoring podcast 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
As someone who works for JLR it’s really good to hear a balanced conversation on the new jag. Totally agree with what you guys said, balanced nuanced discussion is more of what we need. Absolutely love the podcast!
I dunno man I think Ed is off his rocker in regards to his floor mats. Man is mad. He has clearly never spilled anything in the car that leaves a stain or sticky mess(think coffee stain, or dried soda, that sort of thing) Mats save you a ton of time trying to clean that shit up when you can just pull the floor mat out and toss it in the wash or hose it down in the driveway. I hate a dirty car interior.
Will is absolutely spot on. I have put a lot of mileage on company cars, averaging 110,000 miles in 3 year periods and have worn through 1 - 2 sets of oem fitted mats per car. Your heels swivel as you go from the accelerator to the brake pedal. It doesn't matter whether it is a manual or and auto.
Just crashed my cls55 kompressor. Not sure whats the state of the engine after the crash, but it will be on copart in a week or so in oxford area. It does have a limited slip dif
FYI, Brunei was small independent country tucked in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. And talking about their royal collection of cars, I remember one of them was the HKS Zero-R, a limited production custom-tuned Skyline R32 GTR, which is equivalent to RUF with Porsche, Alpina with BMW and Brabus with Mercedes Benz. That car then was later sold to one of the Brunei people. But on how that guy got the chance to owned it, I didn't have that part of that story.
With the Limo you could possibly do a "camper" conversion on it, throw in some beds and a kitchen and you should be able to put that on a camper plate. Then you could register it as a camper. No longer a limo then. Plus that would be great content. Two beds, one stone.
Can confirm floor mats are to prevent wear to the actual carpet, get about 80k out of the VW ones supplied with our work vans. Most people don't see it as they don't do that much milage in one car and it's common to replace or chuck them when selling to make the car look better
My dad and I were massively into f1 during the 90’s Schumacher era when the cars were cool and there was a bit more of a human element to it. We never went to watch it live but we would watch it every Sunday. But!!! My dad worked for a fabrication company (he’s a welder by trade) who made farm machinery mostly trailers but they also had a sister company that prepped rally cars. And we used to go watch some of these semi pro/pro drivers in the back roads of Ireland. It was epic! Just watching/listening/smelling escort cosies, talbot sunbeams and the like pin it off the start line was and experience I’ll never forget. And the fact that my dad worked in the same compound that some of escorts were built in was super cool
Loving the podcast lads, and the chat about Brunei was fantastic (hopefully you do talk about this more because of how interesting the whole saga is). But when Edwin mentioned that none of the cars are "rotting", my mind instantly went to the "Yellow Room" where just about every cars interior was covered in mould. It seems like the only room in the collection where this has happened though.
Edwins stance on floor mats is insane, its because he only drives shit boxes... if he drives them at all.... Especially as Edwin is normally so mentally sound lol
Having the TV in the boot of the zafira is cool. Also think you need to install one into the boot. Another banger of a game choice for the podcast as well
I have rubber mats for winter and only use the nice ones that came with the car for summer. This is the way. Edwin, I challenge you to look in the footwell of every car you see for the rest of the week and tell me you still think car mats are pointless. Do you have clean shoes for driving ?
I have solid plastic mats over my floor mats, it protects the carpet and makes it easier to clean. I've had the car 8 years, from new, and she's a keeper. The other internal mods I have is a rear seat delete, custom re-upholstered steering wheel and full floor sound insulation to stifle the savage cold starts.
@@ChrisCorbettFPV I bought the car new, it's a rare spec and I plan on keeping it till I die. I got my first oil change done after 1500 miles and the diff and trans after 20k. I wouldn't be doing any of this if I was expecting to trade her in down the line.
@@AA2639-m9v are you the kind to also keep your sofa wrapped in plastic? You'd then be able to keep that for your whole uncomfortable, squeaky and slippery life too. (Just j/k btw, you do you)
In both of my parent's cars with 130000km on them there are definitely worn out spots on the floor mats. Beneath the floor mats there's a plastic area right under the pedals, and even through the carpets you can clearly see indents in the plastic where the heels would be. Without the floor mats there would have been damage and you'd have to replace the carpet itself to fix it if there weren't any floor mats. They are absolutely not there for comfort. I'd see them as wear items, because as a driver you naturally dig in your heels at a sharp angle, especially when you switch pedals with your right foot. Your argument about "You also don't wear through your carpet in your house" is nonsense. You don't dig the hard heel of a shoe on the same 3cm² every day. That's loads more of abrasive power on a very concentrated spot. All this doesn't apply to passenger seats of course. Those mats are just there because they are easier to clean. The carpet itself might get some dust on it that you can vacuum out easily, but the straight up dirt and salt and mud from your soles can go on the carpet to get pressure washed. It's like a screen protector on your phone. Some are fine with your screen getting scuffed and scratched or cracked, but most would definitely like to replace a protector for ten bucks instead of a new screen assembly for 250.
I know you said you don’t care- but btcc is good fun to watch, itv3 show it occasionally, the commentators know as much as you do, they bump into each other so it’s funny, then there’s the mini challenge on the same weekend where you get to watch a mini get binned upside down into the gravel 👍
I got a bit mad at the interior mods comments. I've actually considered a full leather wrap on my shitty scirocco , paired with a complete soundproofing. I'd argue that if it's done right that should make it look fantastic. Also I've never agreed with Will more than on the floormats conversation. But then I found out he wears crocs. You are killing me
Ahh guys, this podcast is just fucking brilliant. Been chuckling away to this episode (and other ones). Edwin, you're the cretin for not using floor mats!

I was at Le Mans in 2023 and the NASCAR won Le Mans. It looked cool as hell. It sounded incredible. You felt it in your chest every time it roared by. The driver lineup was elite. Not the first NASCAR entries at Le Mans there was some entries in the 70s I think.
the garage 51 nascar was so funny, they were meant to start at the back of the grid because they were in the experimental class, however they qualified ahead of all the gt cars and halfway through the lmp2 field. the race committee was so scared of the carnage it would cause blasting through the entire gt field in the first lap so they let it start halfway up the grid. It destroyed its own gearbox halfway through the night, which they werent allowed to replace, but since it was in the experimental class they asked if they could and fia let them. so they took 3 hours out and put in a new gearbox and kept going blowing past gt cars.
Going on about stuntman. As a kid, I asked my gran for the Simpsons hit and run game for Christmas and she had ended up getting me Stuntman. Its only when I played it, that I was happy she got me it as I probably wouldn't have thought about it. The disc got ruined, so the game would crash before it got to the main menu, so a few years ago, I bought another copy to play
the first rally i went to (nacht van achtmaal) with my cousin got me hooked. he was a marshall and had to write the times on a paper slip the codriver gave him. and of we stood at the end of the course after a decent long straight so all the cars came bombing at us to squeeze out as much time as posible and i got desgnated to stand inbetween my cousin and the cars to handover the papers. feeling the heat of the brakes (once cause they caught fire) and the seeing the glow under the cars as it became dark out made sure that i loved cars more than i already have.
I've been to a few tracks in the UK as a passenger. Never as a driver. And been round cadwell park a lot of times. But nothing prepared me for seeing cars drift round cadwell park. The noise was insane. I've never heard anything as loud and as exciting. I was there for the time attack and wasn't fussed about the drifting thinking it would be nothing special, glad to say I was completely wrong. What an experience
Make a 10 hour podcast regarding the Brunei Car Collection. Many of us will watch it. Edwin’s enthusiasm is appreciated. And Will knows what to say so Edwin speaks more.
Our work transit vans don’t have mats, so after 250k miles the rubber floor has worn away so much that you can feel the steering wheel turn in the floor. Also, the Warren House Inn often has nice cars out front. In the summer, you could sit out front, have a mini car show in the car park and watch all the minted car enthusiasts thrash across the moors… with the 40mph speed limit.
Not using mats in your car is unhinged. Edwin is immeasurably incorrect and I fail to understand how he cannot understand how normal driving doesn’t wear a carpet out
Edwin, I have seen this voiced a million times in other comments. But I want to drive home how wrong you are about floormats. Will is going to be so justified next podcast when he reads the outpouring of support for him on the matter. Get some floormats you heathen, and protect the carpet.
My old 120k mile WRX came with a hole in the carpet in front of the accelerator because the previous owner didn't use floormats. I've been using OEM rubber Forester mats since then and they're so much easier to keep clean than carpet, idk why all cars don't have rubber mats.
Floor mats absolutely needed. Also, I'd say another interior mod that's okay, provided you do it properly, is radio/headunit replacements. To add CD/AUX to an ancient car, or Android Auto to something newer
Earlier this year I was out looking at a few different cars to figure out what I wanted. I drove an Audi S4 and Audi S5 (both 3.0 supercharged), a BMW 440i, BMW 645ci and a couple others. The jaguar xk (pre facelift x150) was on my list to drive. That is generally considered to be one of the more reliable jags. One thing I picked up very quickly though is how hard people find to sell them. I've watched one dealership that has 2 for sale and has had them since the end of summer. Meanwhile I watched multiple 645cis and 650is sell with the same price range. I bought a 645ci and yes I've spent a decent amount of money on it, considering it's an older car it wasn't looked after the best by it's previous owner but it's has an exhaust system and sounds biblical.
1:21:15 i bought a a set of OEM rubber floor mats for my mk2 golf GTI in 1994, and i still have & use them! They must have covered about 3-400,000 miles in all my golfs over the years! Currently in my mk5 golf.
It’s not just your heels when using pedals, it’s when you get in and out of the car, you twist your feet as you get in and out, in 4 years I destroyed the floor mats in my 595.
I hate to say it but I'm on Will's side with the floor mat thing. My old Colt Ralliart had carpets that were made out of the hopes and prayers of small children 😂. Anyone who removed the floor mats on them ended up with bare metal floor after just a few weeks.
Great ep. Love the Brunei talk. It's like fairy tale status for car guys, can't get enough. Also, get onto your viewers offers, so people keep offering you ops.
My Housemate is form Brunei. Many a crazy story about his mates letting him borrow a lambo to drive home after a birthday party. Driving a RR in the jungle grounding it out.
The f2004 is a 3.0l naturally aspirated V10. F1 didn’t switch to V8s until 2006, other than Scuderia Toro Rosso, who had development/financial issues, so ran a de-rated V10, while everyone else ran 2.4l naturally aspirated V8s cantered to 90 degrees
I firmly believe that car mats are an absolute must, depending on what your day to day life is you whether you use rubber or carpet is up to you! However, I daily a 179k mile E36 touring with what I believe are its original mats… a new set is probably over £100 but for almost 30 year old carpet they’ve held up amazingly
I'm with Will on carpets; I play and attend music festivals in fields during British summer time so the car floor always gets covered in mud. Floor mats I can just take out and spray down with a jetwash.
I have a family friend who works for Aston Martin Works in Milton Keynes who are responsible for the older models/classics and he regularly went to the palace to maintain and service the Aston Martins they had. He never said how many they had, but described it as a fleet.
I am completely and utterly distraught by Edwin's point of view on car mats Like wtf man, you literally never have that problem of wear on the carpet because you only drive your cars like 100 miles per year because you have 20 of them Just because you don't seem to have that problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist man Also, do you never wear dirty or wet shoes inside a car? Car mats are at the very least there to protest the carpet from dirt and moisture!!
Question for the pod: In video games when I am modifying cars I have found that changing the final drive on the transmission changes the car drastically and can make a car feel much better (usually biasing towards acceleration). However, on car youtube I haven't seen people changings the final drive ratio of cars, outside of off roading trucks maybe. I assume that this is because it is hard on a car, but what actually goes into it? Additionally, I would welcome any addition conversation about video game mods vs. real world mods.
I've owned a few cars with floor mats. One car the floor mat moved around then I found they hadn't been clicked into place. There were little mounting points to hold them in place as soon as I attached them never had another issue.
Exact same way to me with F1/Motorsport in general, I appreciate the cars & enjoy the tech/development behind various types of race cars & I can respect the serious talent behind the wheel but couldn't care less about watching a race or following a season etc. Rally is the only one I'd watch on tele for the full sends & crashes
For the Brunei specials it's a massive YES from me. I'd watch them even if they were 10 hours long and going after every single spec of every single car. By the way every car should have rubber floor mats over the carpeting for the simplest reason in the world: shoes get dirty anywhere you go
With Will on carpet/matt issue Much easier to clean a matt than a carpet. The fact Edwin doesn't think his heel will damage the carpet at the accelerator makes me think he's actually a cyclist
Is the limousine issue because in the UK their typically required to be used by licenced private hire vehicle operators in the same way that Hearses are? I had a similar issue when looking to buy a hearse but getting a PHV operator licence seemed a tad excessive.
Forum Question: How does a Torque Convertor work? I have some mechanical knowledge, so I know what the major components are and that it's a fluid coupling, but how do all the bits actually actually work together? I thought I had the basics understood and then read there's a locking solenoid that does... something, to make it well, lock, but how does that know when do its thing? I currently own a ZF auto and being mechanically and engineeringly minded, I want to be able to understand it on at least a basic level.
I remember when I was 7 years old switching the channel and seeing new subaru for 2003 driven by solberg and I said one day I will own one of those cars. 15 years later I bought one and loved every moment until circumstances made me sell it on.
Some of the most exciting motor sports I've seen is Moto3. It's motorcycles but it's insanely close and pretty much anything can happen. Races aren't too long either so it's nice to just tune in and not have to sit through 2 hours of uneventful racing. As a pick for Real Life racing/visiting my top pick has to be VLN/Classic Series' on the Nürburgring. The highlight of the year for me was the ADAC 1000km race, though I may be a bit biased as I attended it as a marshall.
I would have guessed the argument would have come the other way, with Will not worrying about carpets and Edwin freaking out. Yet Edwin, the guy who can't stop cleaning and maintaining things, doesn't seem to know how to keep his carpets clean and maintained 😂
I went up to Lydden Hill to watch my Uncle drive this summer, absolutely jaw dropping to witness. He's got a Mitsubishi Evo 6 based 205 T16 replica. Might be able to hook you up with a ride in it if interested! Cheers love the podcast
i drove around in a work van with working/safety boots. Chewed through the carpet like butter, company wouldn't replace them so it litteraly made a hole in the floor (granted, not metal but some plastic-y liner in the cockpit of the van which couldnt be replaced)
I 100% agree with Will on the carpets, proper OEM fitted mats are a must, you definitely would wear the carpet out, I have worn mats out plenty of times
Edwin has never been so wrong in his life.
@ to not have any is just so wrong 🤣😂
My work boots wear through the carpets/mats all the time. Need the fitted ones for sure though as they don't get stuck under the pedals.
Weathertech
Also, everytime it’s rain or snow the carpet gets wet and will be soaked for days

RULE! I just bought a fully specced 2006 ford mondeo st estate for £900 and drove it 200 miles already! Ready for a fresh mot now. 🤙
Team floor mats 😂 Will is 100% right.
I was at a rally event with my dad years ago and I can tell you the sound of the Audi quattro stays with you forever
The Brunei section was so fascinating!!! Would love to hear Edwin just talking about every odd car he knows on the collection
Edwin is immeasurably incorrect and I fail to understand how he cannot understand how normal driving doesn’t wear a carpet out
I love that you created an account just to say this 😂 20 hour old account, 20 hour old comment. Perfectly worded.
@ I felt so compelled I had to 😂
Edwin, I have seen this voiced a million times in other comments.
Floor mats are a must! I had a brand new Skoda Octavia auto and did 70k in two years in it with no floor mats. It was a mess!
It's gotta be a flip between the M3 GTR or the Castrol Toms Toyota Supra from Gran Turismo. Instantly recognisable game/real life cars.
I am immediately opening Spotify and putting on Oversteer - Basstrap, what a throwback stuntman is boys! 🙌🏼
Edwin: yeah I love keeping cars clean
Also Edwin: yeah I just get in with my muddy shoes innit
I'm with Will on carpets; I play and attend music festivals in fields during British summer time so the car floor always gets covered in mud. Floor mats I can just take out and spray down with a jetwash.
I have a family friend who works for Aston Martin Works in Milton Keynes who are responsible for the older models/classics and he regularly went to the palace to maintain and service the Aston Martins they had. He never said how many they had, but described it as a fleet.
im one of them people that buys a car with nice new floor mats and then buys cheap ones to go over the top so i dont ruin the nice ones lol
I am completely and utterly distraught by Edwin's point of view on car mats
Like wtf man, you literally never have that problem of wear on the carpet because you only drive your cars like 100 miles per year because you have 20 of them
Just because you don't seem to have that problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist man
Also, do you never wear dirty or wet shoes inside a car?
Car mats are at the very least there to protest the carpet from dirt and moisture!!
I was like yay! A new episode, but I already watched on Spotify LMAO
Edwin, buy some mats. Seen loads of old discos and range rovers with massive holes in the carpet.
Massive thing in drifting, diff gears get changed between tracks and/or weather.
If you enjoy full send motorsport and you're in the UK, BTCC is the place for you! Although it doesn't start again until probably April.
burnout 3 is goated, thank you for talking about it.
For the Brunei specials it's a massive YES from me. I'd watch them even if they were 10 hours long and going after every single spec of every single car.
By the way every car should have rubber floor mats over the carpeting for the simplest reason in the world: shoes get dirty anywhere you go
PLEASE do a full episode on the Brunei family collection, this was absolutely fascinating!
Edwin - would love to see a second channel video of you talking us through some of the Brunei collection!
It was great bumping into you guys at Farnborough! Nice intro, I won't forget Will's name now!
floor mats are seals for the underbody....
With Will on carpet/matt issue Much easier to clean a matt than a carpet. The fact Edwin doesn't think his heel will damage the carpet at the accelerator makes me think he's actually a cyclist
Interior mod that is very good, gauges. A must in proper cars
One of the games I’d always play was Race Driver Grid, especially the Chevrolet Lacetti in touring cars
2000’s era rally was the most beautiful thing on the planet
Watching Rallycross with Murray Walkers commentary was the best 👍🏻
You wear through the floormat not because you are resting your heel there for hours, but because your heel is the point at which your foot pivots
I agree with Will on floor mats so much so I just spent nearly £200 on the oem drivers side mat (not a set just one) for my gt86!
i drove around in a work van with working/safety boots. Chewed through the carpet like butter, company wouldn't replace them so it litteraly made a hole in the floor (granted, not metal but some plastic-y liner in the cockpit of the van which couldnt be replaced)
burnout three?!??!?! well thats my weekend sorted!!!!
All JLR car's on the plant have key's in the ignition. You should go undercover in there, oh how much fun 😂
