  • In this video we shot a wrap up to our Code 504 1953 Chevy truck project and give a full rundown what all was done, many of the parts we used, and a few of the many challenges we faced along the way. To say this was slightly more than a "frame swap" project is EXTREMELY accurate and quite honestly not something we would typically take on. So, here we are one final video about this truck!
Looking back at the beginning of this project when the truck originally came to us it was battling several mechanical issues, and being honest about this it was almost undrivable. Due to the previous builder who had attempted to section in a more modern Camaro subframe to the original '53 Chevy frame there were a LOT of geometry issues that just couldn't be resolved. With the discovery of the Code 504 kit and the availability of S-10 chassis to work from.. this really became an excellent option for us. Full roller chassis and Pro Touring chassis are certainly available for these trucks, and can be set up for a variety of uses and engine/transmission arrangements but... those things are expensive! Ranging anywhere from $12-20k going that route immediately puts a project into an entirely different price bracket.
Behind the freshly resealed Chevy 350 small block we put a 4L60E automatic transmission with overdrive. Instantly this makes the truck considerably more drive-able with it's aggressive rear end gearing. However in order to use the electronic transmission behind an old school carbureted engine, we had to get a solution from our friends at TCI for their EX-TCU controller. What a great piece of equipment that whole setup is!
We also conquered some issues with the Classic Instruments dash and gauges to get the speedometer and fuel level gauges working properly. Fortunately those folks have their game figured out and had just the pieces and parts we needed!
Now with a fully functional dash, massively more capable and friendly electronic overdrive transmission, no more leaks from the motor, hugely upgraded steering and suspension AND a brand new S-10 frame swap done this little hotrod is ready to be enjoyed. The scale of this project it beyond anything we would normally take on but we feel at the end it was worthwhile for us, for our customers, and hopefully for you folks out here who can learn from our experiences!

This video really could have been so SO much longer as we battled all kinds of little things throughout the entire process. If you are interested in this project, please go back and spend some time going through the entire playlist to see just how much work really went into getting this truck back on the road. We are very VERY happy to see this one leave!

Thanks for sharing this series!! If anything, I've learned there is a ton of labor involved in this process and you need a shop with specialized tools. I don't think this was achievable for the "average weekend" enthusiast.

I wish you would have covered what you did with the filler neck for the blazer tank. I got the same tank going into a 55 chevy truck. Looking for solutions tks
