One Of My Very Best! - Wood Turning

  • I had trouble figuring out which way to turn this piece but once I got it, it was pretty clear to me. It's rare for me to have an idea for a shape in mind and then to be able to achieve that shape but it worked this time! It became a very natural pedestal bowl and I think this is one of my best turnings ever.
    Maple burl, finished in shellac.

    Phil, you are truly the Michelangelo of wood. Your ability to both retain and reveal beauty is rare.
    As an artist myself, it’s honestly moving and humbling to watch.

    Phil...you say "I don't about this one" so many times, I don't pay attention to it anymore! This one is a prize! I don't know why but I'm always surprised by how pretty the finished creations look. No one does a better job of working WITH the wood and allowing it to keep its' voice. This one is singing pretty! Thanks to Calmwood Creations for letting Phil perform his magic on kind of a clunker looking piece of wood!

    Great work on this. I think one of the greatest parts though is seeing how the woodturning community comes together on TH-cam to elevate each other. The fact that through this platform so many people make friends that will send turning blanks like this off to others is amazing. I'm inspired more and more each time I open TH-cam to try new projects and get others into this incredible hobby and your channel is one of my favorites.

    Thank You Phil, Thank You Dave, Calmwood Creations.... Very few woods come close to the beauty of a polished/finished piece of Maple Burl. Include with that burl the bark and the natural contours of the wood. Does not get much better. Phil you made a beauty! It is small, simple and beautiful with all of the bells & whistles it takes to create a unique piece. Too cool Phil & wonderful show from start to stop. TM

    No question Phil this is by far one of your best. What a perfect piece of wood to have the honor of meeting you and have your touch change it into what it should be. All without changing what it was. You thought your way through and did an amazing job on it. The grain is wonderful but I am with you on the natural sculptured area. That really sets if off as a genuine piece of art.

    • @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the first to use this technique. The first time I was just trying to get the nub as small as possible with the intention to set it on my bench and cut it off with a chisel. Then I realized what I was doing, how small it was getting and wondered "what would happen if I just keep going?" It was clear that if I was careful and held the bevel of the chisel against the bottom of the bowl, nothing bad would happen and it didn't! That was almost six years ago and I've been doing it this way ever since. I've never been sorry about it and I've never made a major mistake with it. Once in awhile if the nub breaks half-way, I will stop and finish on the bench. No point in taking chances! 😊

    Thank you. I've watched several wood turning videos, but learned more from yours. Just starting to learn how to do this.

    Beautiful! As Jayne Cobb (character in Firefly) would say, I’ll be in my bunk. That is stunning.
    And don’t worry about going crazy. In the immortal words of Jimmy Buffett, if we weren’t crazy we’d go insane.
