Certainly in a time like ours, where we try to reduce the environmental impact, produce devices that last less than others and the cheapest solution is not to repair them but to replace them is a beautiful contradiction. We hope this technology improves fast. Nice video as always.
it is not just about the environment, people need to save money and invest it on equity like housing etc. not on repairing their smartphones every year
This has been why I've steered clear of foldable phones. I do think the technology with thinner displays will get there eventually. And the current generation of Samsung foldables is way ahead of the first. But it has a long way to go.
I've had the Fold 3 for over 1 year now and work construction. It's been covered in about everything you can imagine and it's fine. People are just dramatic and aren't careful with their belongings

When even today's phones don't last long enough because of planned obsolescence, lack of repairability and upgradeability, it's clear that avoiding very fragile foldables is the better decision. Great video!
Phones and small electronics have never been upgradeable apart from storage!! Even then, OS changes make devices unusable after a few years. Plus, changing network tech makes devices unusable, it’s not just the phone manufacturers problem!
Planned obsolescence? Lol say that to the people still using iPhone 7’s and below. I repair phones daily. An iPhone 7 is 7 years old. Doesn’t sound like planned obsolescence to me. Sure it may not run like an iPhone 14, but that goes with anything tech when you keep updating it with newer software on old hardware.
I still use an iPhone 6s, the appears with newer phone no headphone jack,expandable storage,everything glued instead of screws,now they are trying to get rid of SIM cards, some high end phones removed features that low to mid range still have but I think is not for long because even thoses phones have also glued backs, when before they were still removable. Also on windows when need a new update and I don’t do it, I noticed that it becomes slower when I do the update it go’s back to normal, but maybe it only happens with me idk.
At RoRo no that is still planned obsolescence. You go and swap your phone for an iPhone 7 for a month, sure it will make a call, send text messages and a few other things, but most apps you try will not work.

Yeah I currently have a motorola that was like 100$, bought 3 years ago and the battery still goes for 5 days no charge and running latest android.. Hope the phone goes for 3 more years.. 6 years seems a good períod to use one of these devices.. Not giving my hard earned money to greed corps looking to sqeeze every penny from people
I have been using the Z Fold4 for six months and and it has been fantastic. I like the ability to use my device as a phone and a tablet. I agree with you when it comes to the durability of foldable phones. While the durability has gotten better, foldables still have ways to go in order to match that of a traditional phone and tablet. When it comes to harsher environments such as extreme weather, I am more cautious with my Z Fold4. In these types of situations, I use a rugged phone or a tablet that is rugged or with a rugged case.
Everybody says that screens are fragile and all,but in drop tests ( the most common way of damaging screens) foldables are actually winning because of the protective lip bumper at the edges. Even screen protector for foldables are a thing now, so use it.

Dropped it a few weeks ago while open, face down about 2-3 feet and it was fine, no issues anywhere. The fragility is a bit overplayed
Doesn't matter, even with careful use the crease *will* develop a crack, albeit a microscopic one to begin with. This happens because the screen is really just a thin layer of plastic no matter how many times Samsung claims it to be "bendable glassTM" , and bending it over and over ends up stressing the material. It happened to my Flip 3 after about 8 months, the crack was only a teeny tiny line in the crease. I couldn't even see it at first, but could feel it when I swiped my finger across the screen. Slowly the crack grew, then another small crack began forming. Eventually more than half the crease had a pretty noticeable crack formed. The only way to truly avoid this is by not folding the phone at all, but in that case you might as well go for a non-foldable.
There is also another thing to consider when having to send in a phone for repair: the inconvenience of not having a phone to use for X number of weeks. For people who use their phone for business, this is not an option. Another great video. I shared it on my (dumb cat stuff) channel in a post.
Or for people who need their phone for MFA. Which is virtually everyone. The main reason I got a smartphone was because I could no longer do without some of the MFA apps; I'd used a samsung flip phone for years prior to that, and I still have that old samsung. Chances are it'll still be in good condition when I'm on my third smartphone. And the old beauty only cost thirty euros.
$820 to repair a Fold 4 screen!? Ouch! That's not far off from getting a Pixel 7 instead!! For a device that costs over $2k, you'd expect the screen to last a minimum of 2yrs! Well it really should last 3-4yrs minimum! I'm just glad I no longer want to get the latest and greatest device every year... dropping over $2-3k each year sounds crazy to me now! Thanks Hugh!
If you still want a foldable that doesnt explode, get the one that has 2 seperate screens. Yes there is a little bit of a gap but like the screens can use actual glass because they themselves dont flex
Just get insurance its like $90 or so for replacement. Same thing for like apple care for a macbook or iPhone. It gonna cost a lot either way out of warranty
I have an iPhone currently, having been a part of the Samsung ecosystem for many years (Note 4 was my first, and a broken S22 Ultra was the final straw for me). I can tell you that these phones are all basically the same thing. I was obsessive with upgrading every year (sometimes multiple times a year). I bought into the marketing so hard. But ultimately what I’ve learned is that a phone just doesn’t improve much from year to year, and the marketing is a lie. I plan to keep this phone for many years, and I’ll only upgrade it when it becomes absolutely obsolete

I held on to my first iPhone for seven (7) years. I’ve been using my second iPhone (Xr) since 2019. Buy a solid, reliable phone, and stay off the merry go round of new devices for at least half a decade. Otherwise you’re throwing money out the window

I love the flip gimmick, but I always make sure to keep my phones as long as they are able to function. Also, I am waiting for this technology to be perfected.
it is not about technology being perfected this is about a flawed concept. Engineering is not magic, engineering solves problems with limited resources, foldables are just a gimmick and don't solve any problem.
The flip is a gimmick the fold tho is a tablet phone I do want one eventually when a ultra device cones out a 15incg tablet is too big but a nice wide 8inch folding device that's not a gimmick that's innovative

In my opinion, foldables make great demo devices. But as you use it in a day to day basis, you’ll likely realize that you don’t really need that bigger screen, and when that happens, you basically paid for a regular phone, but one that costs twice as much as its worth, breaks more easily, costs more to repair, and likely won’t even last for 5 years because of those aforementioned issues and shorter support compared to the iPhone. Also, I don’t think any phone, whether it be an iPhone Pro, a Samsung foldable or something else, should cost more than $1000 until they prove themselves they can last as long as traditional computers. Edit: to be clear, if you have a foldable phone and you enjoy using it, I have personally have no problem with that. I'm glad you are getting the value from what you pay for. I'm just saying that I have yet to see the value of getting a foldable based on what I've seen in reviews and what some of my friends and family who have folding phones have experienced.
I use it every day and for content consumption the phone is so far better than the competition it's not even funny. Not to mention web browsing and even writing an email

Bought a secondhand Z Flip3 that's now almost two years old for $350. Only had to replace the protective film on the screen. Very happy with the phone and the size is perfect.
After watching this on my Z Flip 4, I must agree on some things. The phone screen is not nearly as durable but the biggest problem is that people don't treat their phones with caution. I've had my Z Flip 4 for 2 months now and it's been fine. If I worked in more demanding places like construction or similar, then yeah, I could see it breaking but the most damage my Flip 4 gets are cracks on the screen protector from being used in the same room as a hot shower. Be careful with your stuff and it will last a long time.
I've had my Z Flip 3 for over a year now, and the only problem was the screen protector came off on the bend, so I bought a new screen protector off amazon for like 9 bucks, and haven't had any issues since. Some people are just not that careful with their devices.
I don't want to pay a grand for a device I have to be incredibly careful with. What's the point of that? I'd rather just buy a durable non foldable phone and carry a durable non foldable tablet. A gimmick isn't worth buying a less durable substitute for two devices we already have.
@strayiggyTV I wouldn't say you have to be "incredibly careful" just keep sharp things and hard things (in normal use my fingernails have left exactly 0 scratches) away from the screen, and don't put it in sand. A better criticism would be the lackluster battery life and poor thermal performance. Which is a little disappointing for a 1000 buck device (though with trade in it could be way cheaper), but I bought it cause it's a phone that can become tiny to fit in pockets better. And for that, i am very satisfied, plus it has gotten so many looks from coworkers and friends

I dont really think folding phones are a gimmick, the biggest turn off for people getting tablets is the fact that you cant put them in your pockets. Now most people should wait until they come up with a folding material that is stronger then plastic.
The problem could be solved in the mean time, if manufactures making folding phones would include a case that can protect the phone while its in your pocket.
I didn't realise until I watched this video that the screens actually bent. I always just assumed they'd been engineered with two screens that met without a visible gap.
For me, the only concern with folding phones is with damages that happens to screens just with wear, without and drops out something. Still if manufacturer covers it then it's a no problem, but I've heard different stories. To be sure if I bought a foldable I would also purchase a extended warranty just to be sure
That's why I'll always recommend, if you get a foldable phone, always get it with an added protection plan or extended warranty. I've had my Z Fold4 since August, had no issues, but I know that with that protection plan, I'll be fine if anything happens to it
But now that's an added cost on top of the existing exceedingly expensive device. Unless you have truly bad vision needing a bigger screen or have really big hands, I really don't see it as a good idea.

I have to imagine that non technical people accept folding screens as mature technology simply by virtue of them being on the market. After reading about units failing during reviews, the reality is pretty clear. They're as ridiculous as I expected.
I got myself a fold 3 when that phone launched, I'm currently over a year and a half into ownership and my display has held up absolutely perfectly. Personally, I think foldables are only really worth the risk if you're hyper careful with any technical device like myself. I'm not saying the tech is perfect because no technology is, but I do think they suit what I'm looking for right now.
It's so funny, you see all these negative opinions about folding phones except from people who actually use them on a regular basis. My Fold 2 is in great condition still. And like you said, you simply treat it like a more expensive object. Because it is one. If you break your iPhone every year maybe don't buy a folding screen.

Bought a foldable phone for the sake of enjoying it. Been using it for months and I realized that these are the same flip phones from the past all over again wherein I needed repairs or replacement after some time. The basic form factor still wins. Still, I have enjoyed using the flip phone and will be using it until it breaks.
I had an experience of a flip 3 phone. With the constant fear of having a dent in the middle, you also have a crappy battery life. Sold it and bought a regular pixel 6a brick and very happy with it.
Wouldn't get rid if mine for a pixel , talk about a downgrade, certainly don't appreciate phones, you'de probably get rid of a ferrari cos you wouldn't get the milage.... prat!!!

Having no problems with P6A living to the evening. I'm happy about your and Jay's experience but this phone was definitely not for me.
@@bremsberg I don't know what on earth the two commenters above you are on about. I had a Flip 3 and my experience with battery life was the same as yours. I would charge it to 100%, then 3 - 4 hours later it would be down to 40-60%. Usage was Reddit, TH-cam, and web browsing. This was *with* battery saving mode turned permanently on, as without it the battery would deplete even faster.

I didn't see many, if any at all, listings for Z Flip 4 on the scrolls through eBay. I am glad I waited until Samsung had taken more time to improve on the new technology and so far, four months in, I have had no issues with the Z Flip 4 and have found the quality of life improvements from the design well worth the cost.
I own a Z Flip 2 and Z Fold 2. I'd say they aren't any less durable than regular phones. I work in a construction site, yet the hinges are still smooth. I dropped them so many times, and they are still fine. However, if you unfortunately break the screen, the repair cost is a real issue.
@Jay Frank I bought them specifically to test how durable they are. I flick open my Z Flip like an old school flip phone for the past 2 years. Interestingly, the outer screen is broken, but the inner one is completely fine. Not even a scratch.
@@itsmoses7973 Because why not. It is pretty convenient to use fingernail. When not in use it isn't protected from dirt. There is still gap for rocks to get stuck. Also screens crack in low temperatures. And that isn't even including all problems with OLED and why it sucks. All Samsung phones I had got burn in.
My wife has a second gen Samsung Flip Z. She loves it, and not to put her down, but she's not exactly gentle with her phone. The thing has taken some serious falls and has even gotten a bit wet. We haven't had any issues with the durability of the device. I can't speak for the other devices in your video, but I can say that, at least anecdotally, Samsung's devices seem more robust than you believe.
I've had a ZFlip 3 for over a year with little issues. The stock screen protector, however, did crack and was lifting off at the seam, but there's no damage to the screen itself. I just replaced the screen protector with a more flexible, matte one and it's still going just fine.
Yes. My sister has the same problem with her Z Flip and she did the same thing. With my two nephews handling her phones roughly, I'm surprised it's still lasting in one piece.
Bought Samsung fold 4 13 months ago... and as predicted even with best care, using cases the foldable screen broke.... not because of drop but it started with a protective film peeling off( bubling). Samsung offers 1 time free foldable screen protection replacement but before I even managed to book an appointment (they're really busy) the peeled off screen protector cought the flexible screen in the wrong place and whilst opening the device it broke the inside screen. It is sent under warranty. But having to go through all of this this was my first and therefore last foldable device I bought. Even just knowing that this screen will break again after the repair makes me anxious and not enjoying it as much. And I bought the 4th generation thinking the issues would have been fixed by now... but clearly tech is not there. I want an expensive phone like this to last 4 years... not having to think about repairing the screen ever 12 month (even with my carefull and small usage)
I don’t get why people would want to buy a folding phone, especially those book style ones, for the price of a galaxy z fold you can get the 16” MacBook Pro that’s far better for real world use and multitasking, and if you want a tablet sized display, just buy a freaking tablet
Its simple, when you fold something constantly it will tear off or at the least break...knowing you are bending the screen basically damaging it every time you open it is quite a soul hurting experience that could be easily avoidable since todays phones are huge anyway.
I've read that Apple is going to implement the USB C port in the new iPhones, but they will require a cable with special certificate to charge the device. This is crazy. This company should be getting lawsuits every year and paying out billions of dollars already for coming up with such foolish ideas.

I saw a folding phone in a carrier store on display and I still think that folding phones are cool until like 2 weeks later when you forget about the gimmick and just becomes a fragile phone
1. Folding phones like the Z Fold are NOT gimmicks. They provide a tablet in your pocket. 2. The only thing that truly makes a foldable phone fragile is if it's using Ultra Thin Glass. THAT'S the problem. My friend's Motorola Razr 5G with its PLASTIC foldable display is STILL working flawlessly since launch day. Plastic > Ultra Thin Glass.
I'm watching this video on the z-fold 4 right now and have previously owned the z-fold one and fold two. There's nothing wrong with owning these phones but everyone should make sure they've got insurance. Samsung care has been fantastic and I've only ever had one phone fail me on the inner screen. That phone, was the newest four and I got it repaired at no cost

Because I believed that in 4 iterations, Samsung had figured out to make a Fold/Flip last for 4-5 years without major concerns. If they'd just undo many of the recent developments & give us back an IR blaster or a 3.5mm jack, life would truly be more than satisfactory
SD CARD SLOT! Most people nowadays can live without the 3.5mm jack (because the "dongle" exists, even if it is annoying) and the IR blaster was never anything other than a novelty. The SD card slot, however, has real utility that Samsung is deliberately withholding because they want ongoing revenue from their customers in the form of "cloud" storage.
Hell yeah! That would safe a ton of e-waste. I know so many people who just upgrade their phone because the battery starts degrading. It would also have the benefit to change your backcover/backglas if broken. I think it wouldn't be necessary to make it like these crappy plastic backcovers from the past. They could easily develop a simple attachement to their glas cover which would allow the user to change it by just inserting the Sim eject tool or loosening a few screws. With a gasket it would still be waterproof

I've owned the Z Flip 3 and now the Z Flip 4. Zero durability issues. ZERO. The hinge resistance on my Flip 3 was solid from day one until I upgraded to the 4, which Samsung made even better. The "crease" is invisible at normal viewing angles. It's also not a gimmick. I prop the phone up like a micro-laptop for TH-cam and video chatting all the time. Some people say the cover screen needs to be larger, like how Motorola is trying to do it on their Razer phones. Imo, that's a bad idea, as it defeats the whole purpose of folding the phone. Half coverage is the smart way to go. You want more, open the damn phone. If you are considering a foldable, go with Samsung first. They are way ahead of the curve. The other brands are terrible at it.
This is the exact reason why I'm not excited about foldable phones. Other than "Wow, that's cool," it just doesn't seem to add a lot to existing experience, and it is much more fragile and expensive to repair.
I was quite cautious when I bought my fold 4, so I forked out the option to refresh the phone for 2 years if the device fails. I've gotten a lot of use out of the folding option so it was worth for me. Hopefully I can do a swap atthe 2 year mark and continue to use it for more years to come
I got a folding phone and don't regret it. But be prepared to have issues after 6 months and need to send it to factory then get repair. But I got protection plan so it made everything easy. But any other phone is gonna last you years and this one is 5-7 months before the glue on the screen protector starts peeling off
This is why I'm still holding off from buying one. I will also add that you miss some features from a regular slab phone. Even the vanilla S22 had more compelling features than the Flip 4 and you can get it for less.
Actually phones 📱 today last a long time but consumers are forced to upgrade due to planned obsolescence. Yep, a new business model where major vendors decide they will no longer provide updates after a certain period. 😶
I'm an owner of a Z Fold 3. My phones never lasted one year before the Fold because I've always upgraded yearly since the Galaxy S2. I brought it during pre-sales back in September/2021. To this day I'm in love with this phone and it's the first one that I don't feel a necessity to upgrade. It's simply amazing and I've only had great experiences with it both in terms of durability and reliability. Of course, I want it to last as long as possible. Currently I have an insurance but I'm not eager to use it. As far as I can tell based on reddit it's not uncommon people having problems with the screen. I think the weather might be a factor there - things don't like to bend in colder temperatures - and i live in a tropical country so that's is not an issue. Overall I don't have any complaints. If you have any specific questions let me know.
I like my Fold 4, it's probably the best phone I've had. There is a reason to take Samsung Care+ due to the risk of the screen breaking. I haven't had any problems so far but I take care of this phone. There are a lot of people on Facebook groups dedicated to the Fold3/4 that the screen breaking stems from applying too much pressure to the crease. The downside to this phone for me is the cleaning required because the inner screen and ports are dust magnets. The Samsung case for the Fold doesn't really do enough to protect the phone either.
I agree. Most people should stick to normal phones. But if you know the risk and are a enthusiast, get one. You won’t go back to a slab. I’ve had my Fold 3 since launch and dropped it a few times but still works. They’re more durable than you think. Only thing I had to replace was the screen protector. I’m even going caseless now cause I love the design so much.
I got brave and I've been using my Fold 4 caseless since I bought it It's a gorgeous phone Only miss not being able to take the pen around with me without a case
I have an iPhone and I never go caseless. But I did get a clear case with glitter inside since I love the color of my iPhone so much. And the glitter with the light blue color reminds me of Cinderella.
I've had a z flip 4 for the past 5 months and I love it. I mean, yeah, I anticipate it's likely to be less durable than non-foldable phones, but it was a trade-off I was willing to make for a phone that actually fits any pockets or bags I'm wearing (the ever present issue of women's clothing), and to me it has been worth it. So far mine still looks as perfect as when I first got it, but then again I try to not be careless with my phone (had my previous phone for 4 years without a single crack) and I always have a case on. I can certainly agree this is not a phone for people that are prone for breaking phones in general.
If you want a small phone get the iPhone 13 mini. As someone who refuses to buy any phone larger than 6 inches I can confirm that it is AWESOME and super compact.
I think that’s pointless it’s like a solution to a problem that never existed first u ll have to take it out then un flip it to use it . With a regular phone u just take it out and use it right away .imagine carrying bags and having and how cumbersome that would be to fiddle around tryin to unflip it
I could accept the fact they are more fragile. You can just take better care of them. But what appears to be happening here is they're simply breaking from normal everyday use and that they'll crack no matter how careful you are and that's simply unacceptable. It's criminal even considering all those manufacturers claim 300 000 folds yet the screen cracks after a year.
I agree, however, on the "Flip" side. If no early adapters or no one will buy the foldable phones, then the technology or innovation will be much slower.
Check out the Honor Magic Vs. It has a ground breaking new hinge mechanism and double the life span of any other existing foldable with being able to be folded over 400000 times before breaking.

As I own a Flip 3 since it's release in August 2021, Im not so pessimistic about folding phones. In fact Im quite surprised how well it stood up the test of time. Unless the display protector foil that comes off every 6 month, there rly is no issue I can't live with. The hinge becomes a bit looser during first 3 month of using the Flip 3 , but once it "settled" there is no further "worn out effect" Still folds and unfolds very smootly. As a tech enthusiast I just felt in love with this thing from day one, and I rly do not wanna go back to a normal smartphone.(although I still use my old SD 855 device at my working place) As such Im also aware of the weak points of folding phones and so I rly handle my device with care.
@@pranshusahu8678 in the case of my Z Fold 2 look after it more (now you can get I think 1 free replacement in the first year via a Samsung shop) and realise just how much better the screen is to use and feel without it! To be fair the one on the Z flip 3 is much better touch and reflective wise (own both). I use my Z Fold 2 more as a tablet replacement anyway so the much better screen has been worth not having the screen protector.

Your video is sure spot on. I purchased a Samsung Z Flip 4 back in August of 2022. The screen began "blacking out" as the dislodging from the hinge area expanded two months ago. It's been a challenge trying to get it fixed. Multiple phone calls to customer service. Of course I could probably be assertive. I just feel like they don't want to deal with this. I own a Fold 3 and have had it for a year. It's a very good device and, in my opinion, is the best form factor as you can use it normally and open it up only when you need or want a bigger screen. This reduces wear on the foldable screen in comparison to Flip as you cannot use Flip unless you open it up and people check on their phones *a lot* . I open up my Fold up to 30 times a day max, exception being the days where people asked to see it and folded it a few times while holding it. With it being rated to withstand up to 200.000 folds I am certain that it will last me at least 3 years, which is a year longer than any other phone I ever had. I have a Z Flip 3 as a work phone that I got since Feb 2022. Been rock solid for me to the point it impressed my dad who went ahead and bought the Z Fold 4. May end up replacing my 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max for a Z Fold down the road.
You're right. I saw many foldables in Korea, and thought they looked amazing. Wouldn't you know if, after just about a month they start having various defects.
Have the Z Flip 3 since launch and also removed the screen protector. Zero issues to this day and i've also got a Fold 4. No scratches on either of them at all. Just because Huawei was dumb enough to come up with such a design doesn't mean all foldables are bad. As an informed consumer, I decided to wait before considering a foldable phone. Then when the "Living with" reviews came out, I decided to look into it, and decided against it.
I had the Z Flip 3 for nearly a year. I noticed a small scratch in the crease show up after having it for 6 months, even though I was super careful with it. It wasn't a big deal at the time to me, the display was still responsive under it, and it wasn't actually super noticeable. However, around the one year mark of owning my phone, the crease started opening up near the edges, then in less than a weak, the crease was all raised up. I went to see how much it cost to get the screen replaced and ultimately decided it was cheaper to trade it in and get the S22... 😢
I bought a Z Flip 3 in 2021 because it was the same price as a Galaxy S21 brand new from my carrier. It was really cool, but broke after a year and they wanted 400 dollars to fix it, which was the cost of just buying another Flip off of eBay. Tech in them is really cool but having a phone break for no reason 10 months after I bought it was a lot less cool
On my third Foldable now Still haven't had any break on me and my friend that bought my Fold 2 is still happily using it now. It's three years old. Here's to hoping I'll still have this kind of glowing review when I pick up the fifth Galaxy Fold when that comes out
I own a Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, owned a Razr 2019, Razr 5g and now use a Z Flip 4 as my daily driver. I haven't had a candy bar type smart phone in 3 years.I'll keep using them as long as they're still being made. I haven't had any issues with any of then besides for the Razr 2019 which was a horrible but that had been well documented. I've rotated phones weekly so they all have been well used for sometime now. I look forward to the future of foldable phones.
These are cool and all, but I'll see how these continue to improve overtime and for any kinks to be ironed out! I tried one of these folding phones at a T-Mobile last year.

Well from what I can conclude from this video, the LG Dual Screen phones (G8X, V50, V60, Velvet), and the LG Wing are great options if you want two screens on your phone, and if you want them to be easily repairable...
Ive had my Z Flip 3 for over a year. I haven't been overy careful with it and dropped it on a concrete floor a couple times and its still in basically perfect condition! Couldn't be happier with it
It seems like its a hit or miss situation with these phones, if you get a bad one, it breaks really quickly, if you get a good one, you wonder what everyone else is doing with their folds.
Finally, a positive comment lol. I had a Fold 3 since launch before trading it in for my Fold 4. No issues on the interior folding screen on either phone. If you have insurance, your repair costs plummet drastically.
I think most people who are buying flippables know these issues to begin with and are willing to pay a premium to have latest folding screens. For us it's just another choice of phone which we can decide not to buy. But that's just my point of view.
I personally have not been a folding phone fan since the 2000’s and as soon as I saw Samsung come out with their foldable phone all I could think of was the foldable phones of the past and how i wished it would end.
Certainly in a time like ours, where we try to reduce the environmental impact, produce devices that last less than others and the cheapest solution is not to repair them but to replace them is a beautiful contradiction. We hope this technology improves fast. Nice video as always.

This has been why I've steered clear of foldable phones.
I do think the technology with thinner displays will get there eventually. And the current generation of Samsung foldables is way ahead of the first. But it has a long way to go.
I've had the Fold 3 for over 1 year now and work construction. It's been covered in about everything you can imagine and it's fine. People are just dramatic and aren't careful with their belongings

Phones and small electronics have never been upgradeable apart from storage!! Even then, OS changes make devices unusable after a few years. Plus, changing network tech makes devices unusable, it’s not just the phone manufacturers problem!
Planned obsolescence? Lol say that to the people still using iPhone 7’s and below. I repair phones daily. An iPhone 7 is 7 years old. Doesn’t sound like planned obsolescence to me. Sure it may not run like an iPhone 14, but that goes with anything tech when you keep updating it with newer software on old hardware.
I still use an iPhone 6s, the appears with newer phone no headphone jack,expandable storage,everything glued instead of screws,now they are trying to get rid of SIM cards, some high end phones removed features that low to mid range still have but I think is not for long because even thoses phones have also glued backs, when before they were still removable.
Also on windows when need a new update and I don’t do it, I noticed that it becomes slower when I do the update it go’s back to normal, but maybe it only happens with me idk.

At RoRo no that is still planned obsolescence. You go and swap your phone for an iPhone 7 for a month, sure it will make a call, send text messages and a few other things, but most apps you try will not work.

I have been using the Z Fold4 for six months and and it has been fantastic. I like the ability to use my device as a phone and a tablet. I agree with you when it comes to the durability of foldable phones. While the durability has gotten better, foldables still have ways to go in order to match that of a traditional phone and tablet. When it comes to harsher environments such as extreme weather, I am more cautious with my Z Fold4. In these types of situations, I use a rugged phone or a tablet that is rugged or with a rugged case.

Everybody says that screens are fragile and all,but in drop tests ( the most common way of damaging screens) foldables are actually winning because of the protective lip bumper at the edges.
Even screen protector for foldables are a thing now, so use it.

Dropped it a few weeks ago while open, face down about 2-3 feet and it was fine, no issues anywhere. The fragility is a bit overplayed
Doesn't matter, even with careful use the crease *will* develop a crack, albeit a microscopic one to begin with. This happens because the screen is really just a thin layer of plastic no matter how many times Samsung claims it to be "bendable glassTM" , and bending it over and over ends up stressing the material.
It happened to my Flip 3 after about 8 months, the crack was only a teeny tiny line in the crease. I couldn't even see it at first, but could feel it when I swiped my finger across the screen.
Slowly the crack grew, then another small crack began forming. Eventually more than half the crease had a pretty noticeable crack formed.
The only way to truly avoid this is by not folding the phone at all, but in that case you might as well go for a non-foldable.
There is also another thing to consider when having to send in a phone for repair: the inconvenience of not having a phone to use for X number of weeks.
For people who use their phone for business, this is not an option.

The main reason I got a smartphone was because I could no longer do without some of the MFA apps; I'd used a samsung flip phone for years prior to that, and I still have that old samsung. Chances are it'll still be in good condition when I'm on my third smartphone. And the old beauty only cost thirty euros.
$820 to repair a Fold 4 screen!? Ouch! That's not far off from getting a Pixel 7 instead!! For a device that costs over $2k, you'd expect the screen to last a minimum of 2yrs! If you still want a foldable that doesnt explode, get the one that has 2 seperate screens. Yes there is a little bit of a gap but like the screens can use actual glass because they themselves dont flex

I have an iPhone currently, having been a part of the Samsung ecosystem for many years (Note 4 was my first, and a broken S22 Ultra was the final straw for me). I can tell you that these phones are all basically the same thing. I was obsessive with upgrading every year (sometimes multiple times a year). I bought into the marketing so hard. But ultimately what I’ve learned is that a phone just doesn’t improve much from year to year, and the marketing is a lie. I plan to keep this phone for many years, and I’ll only upgrade it when it becomes absolutely obsolete

I love the flip gimmick, but I always make sure to keep my phones as long as they are able to function. Also, I am waiting for this technology to be perfected.

For the most part it's just the flexible glass and since glass by nature is meant to be rigid, adding flexibility consequently adds extreme fragility.

The flip is a gimmick the fold tho is a tablet phone I do want one eventually when a ultra device cones out a 15incg tablet is too big but a nice wide 8inch folding device that's not a gimmick that's innovative

In my opinion, foldables make great demo devices. But as you use it in a day to day basis, you’ll likely realize that you don’t really need that bigger screen, and when that happens, you basically paid for a regular phone, but one that costs twice as much as its worth, breaks more easily, costs more to repair, and likely won’t even last for 5 years because of those aforementioned issues and shorter support compared to the iPhone.
Also, I don’t think any phone, whether it be an iPhone Pro, a Samsung foldable or something else, should cost more than $1000 until they prove themselves they can last as long as traditional computers.
Edit: to be clear, if you have a foldable phone and you enjoy using it, I have personally have no problem with that. I'm glad you are getting the value from what you pay for. I'm just saying that I have yet to see the value of getting a foldable based on what I've seen in reviews and what some of my friends and family who have folding phones have experienced.
I use it every day and for content consumption the phone is so far better than the competition it's not even funny. Not to mention web browsing and even writing an email

Bought a secondhand Z Flip3 that's now almost two years old for $350. Only had to replace the protective film on the screen. Very happy with the phone and the size is perfect.
After watching this on my Z Flip 4, I must agree on some things. The phone screen is not nearly as durable but the biggest problem is that people don't treat their phones with caution. I've had my Z Flip 4 for 2 months now and it's been fine. If I worked in more demanding places like construction or similar, then yeah, I could see it breaking but the most damage my Flip 4 gets are cracks on the screen protector from being used in the same room as a hot shower.
Be careful with your stuff and it will last a long time.
I've had my Z Flip 3 for over a year now, and the only problem was the screen protector came off on the bend, so I bought a new screen protector off amazon for like 9 bucks, and haven't had any issues since. Some people are just not that careful with their devices.
I don't want to pay a grand for a device I have to be incredibly careful with. What's the point of that? I'd rather just buy a durable non foldable phone and carry a durable non foldable tablet. A gimmick isn't worth buying a less durable substitute for two devices we already have.
@strayiggyTV I wouldn't say you have to be "incredibly careful" just keep sharp things and hard things (in normal use my fingernails have left exactly 0 scratches) away from the screen, and don't put it in sand.
A better criticism would be the lackluster battery life and poor thermal performance. Which is a little disappointing for a 1000 buck device (though with trade in it could be way cheaper), but I bought it cause it's a phone that can become tiny to fit in pockets better. And for that, i am very satisfied, plus it has gotten so many looks from coworkers and friends

I dont really think folding phones are a gimmick, the biggest turn off for people getting tablets is the fact that you cant put them in your pockets. Now most people should wait until they come up with a folding material that is stronger then plastic.
The problem could be solved in the mean time, if manufactures making folding phones would include a case that can protect the phone while its in your pocket.
I didn't realise until I watched this video that the screens actually bent. I always just assumed they'd been engineered with two screens that met without a visible gap.
They should make a 60" TV that one can foold several times until it's pocketable.
For me, the only concern with folding phones is with damages that happens to screens just with wear, without and drops out something. Still if manufacturer covers it then it's a no problem, but I've heard different stories. To be sure if I bought a foldable I would also purchase a extended warranty just to be sure
That's why I'll always recommend, if you get a foldable phone, always get it with an added protection plan or extended warranty. I've had my Z Fold4 since August, had no issues, but I know that with that protection plan, I'll be fine if anything happens to it
But now that's an added cost on top of the existing exceedingly expensive device. Unless you have truly bad vision needing a bigger screen or have really big hands, I really don't see it as a good idea.

I have to imagine that non technical people accept folding screens as mature technology simply by virtue of them being on the market. After reading about units failing during reviews, the reality is pretty clear. They're as ridiculous as I expected.
I got myself a fold 3 when that phone launched, I'm currently over a year and a half into ownership and my display has held up absolutely perfectly.
Personally, I think foldables are only really worth the risk if you're hyper careful with any technical device like myself. I'm not saying the tech is perfect because no technology is, but I do think they suit what I'm looking for right now.

I've seen quite a few folding phones out in the wild, a few of them were over 2 years old, and they're still in working order.
Bought a foldable phone for the sake of enjoying it. Been using it for months and I realized that these are the same flip phones from the past all over again wherein I needed repairs or replacement after some time.
The basic form factor still wins.
Still, I have enjoyed using the flip phone and will be using it until it breaks.

I had an experience of a flip 3 phone. With the constant fear of having a dent in the middle, you also have a crappy battery life. Sold it and bought a regular pixel 6a brick and very happy with it.
Wouldn't get rid if mine for a pixel , talk about a downgrade, certainly don't appreciate phones, you'de probably get rid of a ferrari cos you wouldn't get the milage.... prat!!!

@@dan98996 don't call a person a liar w/o knowing him, I used my phone to play YT vids in the background (both screen on and off), and with Flip 3 the battery barely lived from 7 am to 2-3 pm. Having no problems with P6A living to the evening. I'm happy about your and Jay's experience but this phone was definitely not for me.

@@bremsberg I don't know what on earth the two commenters above you are on about. I had a Flip 3 and my experience with battery life was the same as yours. I would charge it to 100%, then 3 - 4 hours later it would be down to 40-60%. Usage was Reddit, TH-cam, and web browsing. This was *with* battery saving mode turned permanently on, as without it the battery would deplete even faster.

I didn't see many, if any at all, listings for Z Flip 4 on the scrolls through eBay. I am glad I waited until Samsung had taken more time to improve on the new technology and so far, four months in, I have had no issues with the Z Flip 4 and have found the quality of life improvements from the design well worth the cost.
This is what I was trying to explain to everyone who wanted to buy into this gimmick.

I own a Z Flip 2 and Z Fold 2. I'd say they aren't any less durable than regular phones. I work in a construction site, yet the hinges are still smooth. I dropped them so many times, and they are still fine. However, if you unfortunately break the screen, the repair cost is a real issue.
Wait until u start to see clear crease in the middle. The build is strong and durable, the screen isnt
@Jay Frank I bought them specifically to test how durable they are. I flick open my Z Flip like an old school flip phone for the past 2 years. Interestingly, the outer screen is broken, but the inner one is completely fine. Not even a scratch.

@@itsmoses7973 Because why not. It is pretty convenient to use fingernail. When not in use it isn't protected from dirt. There is still gap for rocks to get stuck. Also screens crack in low temperatures.
And that isn't even including all problems with OLED and why it sucks. All Samsung phones I had got burn in.
My wife has a second gen Samsung Flip Z. She loves it, and not to put her down, but she's not exactly gentle with her phone. The thing has taken some serious falls and has even gotten a bit wet. We haven't had any issues with the durability of the device. I can't speak for the other devices in your video, but I can say that, at least anecdotally, Samsung's devices seem more robust than you believe.
I've had a ZFlip 3 for over a year with little issues. The stock screen protector, however, did crack and was lifting off at the seam, but there's no damage to the screen itself. I just replaced the screen protector with a more flexible, matte one and it's still going just fine.
Yes. My sister has the same problem with her Z Flip and she did the same thing.
With my two nephews handling her phones roughly, I'm surprised it's still lasting in one piece.
Bought Samsung fold 4 13 months ago... and as predicted even with best care, using cases the foldable screen broke.... not because of drop but it started with a protective film peeling off( bubling). Samsung offers 1 time free foldable screen protection replacement but before I even managed to book an appointment (they're really busy) the peeled off screen protector cought the flexible screen in the wrong place and whilst opening the device it broke the inside screen. It is sent under warranty. But having to go through all of this this was my first and therefore last foldable device I bought. Even just knowing that this screen will break again after the repair makes me anxious and not enjoying it as much. And I bought the 4th generation thinking the issues would have been fixed by now... but clearly tech is not there. I want an expensive phone like this to last 4 years... not having to think about repairing the screen ever 12 month (even with my carefull and small usage)
Foldables are nothing short of a costly, impractical gimmick. The sooner we move past this the better.

I don’t get why people would want to buy a folding phone, especially those book style ones, for the price of a galaxy z fold you can get the 16” MacBook Pro that’s far better for real world use and multitasking, and if you want a tablet sized display, just buy a freaking tablet
Its simple, when you fold something constantly it will tear off or at the least break...knowing you are bending the screen basically damaging it every time you open it is quite a soul hurting experience that could be easily avoidable since todays phones are huge anyway.
I've read that Apple is going to implement the USB C port in the new iPhones, but they will require a cable with special certificate to charge the device. This is crazy.
This company should be getting lawsuits every year and paying out billions of dollars already for coming up with such foolish ideas.

I saw a folding phone in a carrier store on display and I still think that folding phones are cool until like 2 weeks later when you forget about the gimmick and just becomes a fragile phone
1. Folding phones like the Z Fold are NOT gimmicks. They provide a tablet in your pocket.
2. The only thing that truly makes a foldable phone fragile is if it's using Ultra Thin Glass. THAT'S the problem. My friend's Motorola Razr 5G with its PLASTIC foldable display is STILL working flawlessly since launch day.

I'm watching this video on the z-fold 4 right now and have previously owned the z-fold one and fold two. There's nothing wrong with owning these phones but everyone should make sure they've got insurance. Samsung care has been fantastic and I've only ever had one phone fail me on the inner screen. That phone, was the newest four and I got it repaired at no cost

I was seriously considering buying a foldable phone next. Because I believed that in 4 iterations, Samsung had figured out to make a Fold/Flip last for 4-5 years without major concerns.
If they'd just undo many of the recent developments & give us back an IR blaster or a 3.5mm jack, life would truly be more than satisfactory
SD CARD SLOT! Most people nowadays can live without the 3.5mm jack (because the "dongle" exists, even if it is annoying) and the IR blaster was never anything other than a novelty. The SD card slot, however, has real utility that Samsung is deliberately withholding because they want ongoing revenue from their customers in the form of "cloud" storage.

Hell yeah! That would safe a ton of e-waste. I know so many people who just upgrade their phone because the battery starts degrading.
It would also have the benefit to change your backcover/backglas if broken.
I think it wouldn't be necessary to make it like these crappy plastic backcovers from the past. They could easily develop a simple attachement to their glas cover which would allow the user to change it by just inserting the Sim eject tool or loosening a few screws. With a gasket it would still be waterproof

I've owned the Z Flip 3 and now the Z Flip 4. Zero durability issues. ZERO. The hinge resistance on my Flip 3 was solid from day one until I upgraded to the 4, which Samsung made even better. The "crease" is invisible at normal viewing angles. It's also not a gimmick. I prop the phone up like a micro-laptop for TH-cam and video chatting all the time.
Some people say the cover screen needs to be larger, like how Motorola is trying to do it on their Razer phones. Imo, that's a bad idea, as it defeats the whole purpose of folding the phone. Half coverage is the smart way to go. You want more, open the damn phone.
If you are considering a foldable, go with Samsung first. They are way ahead of the curve. The other brands are terrible at it.
This is the exact reason why I'm not excited about foldable phones. Other than "Wow, that's cool," it just doesn't seem to add a lot to existing experience, and it is much more fragile and expensive to repair.
Adds quite a bit if you watch TH-cam. Nice large picture. Games? Oh yeah. Plenty of advantages.

I was quite cautious when I bought my fold 4, so I forked out the option to refresh the phone for 2 years if the device fails. I've gotten a lot of use out of the folding option so it was worth for me. Hopefully I can do a swap atthe 2 year mark and continue to use it for more years to come
I got a folding phone and don't regret it. But be prepared to have issues after 6 months and need to send it to factory then get repair. But I got protection plan so it made everything easy. But any other phone is gonna last you years and this one is 5-7 months before the glue on the screen protector starts peeling off
This is why I'm still holding off from buying one. I will also add that you miss some features from a regular slab phone. Even the vanilla S22 had more compelling features than the Flip 4 and you can get it for less.

I'm an owner of a Z Fold 3. My phones never lasted one year before the Fold because I've always upgraded yearly since the Galaxy S2. I brought it during pre-sales back in September/2021. To this day I'm in love with this phone and it's the first one that I don't feel a necessity to upgrade. It's simply amazing and I've only had great experiences with it both in terms of durability and reliability. Of course, I want it to last as long as possible. Currently I have an insurance but I'm not eager to use it. As far as I can tell based on reddit it's not uncommon people having problems with the screen. I think the weather might be a factor there - things don't like to bend in colder temperatures - and i live in a tropical country so that's is not an issue. Overall I don't have any complaints. If you have any specific questions let me know.
I like my Fold 4, it's probably the best phone I've had. There is a reason to take Samsung Care+ due to the risk of the screen breaking. I haven't had any problems so far but I take care of this phone. There are a lot of people on Facebook groups dedicated to the Fold3/4 that the screen breaking stems from applying too much pressure to the crease. The downside to this phone for me is the cleaning required because the inner screen and ports are dust magnets. The Samsung case for the Fold doesn't really do enough to protect the phone either.
I agree. Most people should stick to normal phones. But if you know the risk and are a enthusiast, get one. You won’t go back to a slab. I’ve had my Fold 3 since launch and dropped it a few times but still works. They’re more durable than you think. Only thing I had to replace was the screen protector. I’m even going caseless now cause I love the design so much.
I'm an enthusiast, but I don't like folding screen phones. I rather get a dual display phone like the Microsoft Surface Duo/Duo 2.

I have an iPhone and I never go caseless. But I did get a clear case with glitter inside since I love the color of my iPhone so much. And the glitter with the light blue color reminds me of Cinderella.

I've had a z flip 4 for the past 5 months and I love it. I mean, yeah, I anticipate it's likely to be less durable than non-foldable phones, but it was a trade-off I was willing to make for a phone that actually fits any pockets or bags I'm wearing (the ever present issue of women's clothing), and to me it has been worth it. So far mine still looks as perfect as when I first got it, but then again I try to not be careless with my phone (had my previous phone for 4 years without a single crack) and I always have a case on. I can certainly agree this is not a phone for people that are prone for breaking phones in general.
Women's pockets are exactly why I bought the flip 4. I've been using mine for 6 months no issues, and I love it.
If you want a small phone get the iPhone 13 mini. As someone who refuses to buy any phone larger than 6 inches I can confirm that it is AWESOME and super compact.

I could accept the fact they are more fragile. You can just take better care of them. But what appears to be happening here is they're simply breaking from normal everyday use and that they'll crack no matter how careful you are and that's simply unacceptable. It's criminal even considering all those manufacturers claim 300 000 folds yet the screen cracks after a year.
I agree, however, on the "Flip" side. If no early adapters or no one will buy the foldable phones, then the technology or innovation will be much slower.

Smartphones that I don't like are those with curved screens on the sides, folding or flip smartphones.

As I own a Flip 3 since it's release in August 2021, Im not so pessimistic about folding phones. In fact Im quite surprised how well it stood up the test of time. Unless the display protector foil that comes off every 6 month, there rly is no issue I can't live with. The hinge becomes a bit looser during first 3 month of using the Flip 3 , but once it "settled" there is no further "worn out effect" Still folds and unfolds very smootly. As a tech enthusiast I just felt in love with this thing from day one, and I rly do not wanna go back to a normal smartphone.(although I still use my old SD 855 device at my working place) As such Im also aware of the weak points of folding phones and so I rly handle my device with care.
What do you do after the protector foil comes off?
@@pranshusahu8678 in the case of my Z Fold 2 look after it more (now you can get I think 1 free replacement in the first year via a Samsung shop) and realise just how much better the screen is to use and feel without it! To be fair the one on the Z flip 3 is much better touch and reflective wise (own both). I use my Z Fold 2 more as a tablet replacement anyway so the much better screen has been worth not having the screen protector.

Your video is sure spot on. I purchased a Samsung Z Flip 4 back in August of 2022. The screen began "blacking out" as the dislodging from the hinge area expanded two months ago. It's been a challenge trying to get it fixed. Multiple phone calls to customer service. Of course I could probably be assertive. I just feel like they don't want to deal with this. Can't blame them the repair shops I guess. I thought about trying my hand at it. I just subscribed. Thanks for your frankness on these issues. Be well.
I own a Fold 3 and have had it for a year.
It's a very good device and, in my opinion, is the best form factor as you can use it normally and open it up only when you need or want a bigger screen.
This reduces wear on the foldable screen in comparison to Flip as you cannot use Flip unless you open it up and people check on their phones *a lot* .
I open up my Fold up to 30 times a day max, exception being the days where people asked to see it and folded it a few times while holding it.
With it being rated to withstand up to 200.000 folds I am certain that it will last me at least 3 years, which is a year longer than any other phone I ever had.
Unless I drop it or somehow break it, that is...

I have a Z Flip 3 as a work phone that I got since Feb 2022. Been rock solid for me to the point it impressed my dad who went ahead and bought the Z Fold 4. May end up replacing my 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max for a Z Fold down the road.

You're right. I saw many foldables in Korea, and thought they looked amazing. Wouldn't you know if, after just about a month they start having various defects.
Have the Z Flip 3 since launch and also removed the screen protector. Zero issues to this day and i've also got a Fold 4. No scratches on either of them at all. Just because Huawei was dumb enough to come up with such a design doesn't mean all foldables are bad. Love my Fold 4,and if i'm going to pay a big amount of money,i'd rather get a Galaxy Fold more than a Galaxy S
I got my mom the fold 2 when it came out, and she’s still using it. She’s always emailing and texting so it’s been a real treat for her.
I feel that if it only had lasted her for a year, it would have been worth it.
As an informed consumer, I decided to wait before considering a foldable phone. Then when the "Living with" reviews came out, I decided to look into it, and decided against it.
I had the Z Flip 3 for nearly a year. I noticed a small scratch in the crease show up after having it for 6 months, even though I was super careful with it. It wasn't a big deal at the time to me, the display was still responsive under it, and it wasn't actually super noticeable. However, around the one year mark of owning my phone, the crease started opening up near the edges, then in less than a weak, the crease was all raised up. I went to see how much it cost to get the screen replaced and ultimately decided it was cheaper to trade it in and get the S22... 😢
I bought a Z Flip 3 in 2021 because it was the same price as a Galaxy S21 brand new from my carrier. It was really cool, but broke after a year and they wanted 400 dollars to fix it, which was the cost of just buying another Flip off of eBay. Tech in them is really cool but having a phone break for no reason 10 months after I bought it was a lot less cool

Mine had a warranty, I sent it in and they wanted 400 dollars to fix it. No Samsung Care Plus or anything so they didn't really care
Given that many people rely on their phones for daily life, having the screen be such a big vulnerability is just not worth it

Still haven't had any break on me and my friend that bought my Fold 2 is still happily using it now. It's three years old.

I own a Z Fold 3, Z Flip 3, owned a Razr 2019, Razr 5g and now use a Z Flip 4 as my daily driver. I haven't had a candy bar type smart phone in 3 years.I'll keep using them as long as they're still being made. I haven't had any issues with any of then besides for the Razr 2019 which was a horrible but that had been well documented. I've rotated phones weekly so they all have been well used for sometime now. I look forward to the future of foldable phones.
In a case for a phone, why engineer a bendy screen when you can make a clever hinge between 2 screens that open and appear as one continuous screen?
These are cool and all, but I'll see how these continue to improve overtime and for any kinks to be ironed out! I tried one of these folding phones at a T-Mobile last year.

Well from what I can conclude from this video, the LG Dual Screen phones (G8X, V50, V60, Velvet), and the LG Wing are great options if you want two screens on your phone, and if you want them to be easily repairable...
Ive had my Z Flip 3 for over a year. I haven't been overy careful with it and dropped it on a concrete floor a couple times and its still in basically perfect condition! Couldn't be happier with it
It seems like its a hit or miss situation with these phones, if you get a bad one, it breaks really quickly, if you get a good one, you wonder what everyone else is doing with their folds.
Finally, a positive comment lol. I had a Fold 3 since launch before trading it in for my Fold 4. No issues on the interior folding screen on either phone. If you have insurance, your repair costs plummet drastically.
I think most people who are buying flippables know these issues to begin with and are willing to pay a premium to have latest folding screens.
For us it's just another choice of phone which we can decide not to buy.
But that's just my point of view.
I personally have not been a folding phone fan since the 2000’s and as soon as I saw Samsung come out with their foldable phone all I could think of was the foldable phones of the past and how i wished it would end.
