    Silicone boost hoses are a good upgrade. They last longer than the normal rubber ones and are more resistant to oil and engine bay heat. One word of warning that you should watch for on any older / high mileage turbo engine is worn oil seals in the turbo internals. Oil mist can get into the boost induction air and burn with the fuel air mix, causing overfuelling symptoms and black exhaust smoke. In extreme wear cases, you could find the engine oil lubricating the turbo gets past the worn seals in enough quantity to fuel the engine on its own. An early symptom you may find is the engine won't stop immediately when you switch off, or runs on longer as the problem gets worse. You can stall a manual gearbox car, but not an auto, so get it checked if you find those symptoms. Keep a regular check on your engine oil as unexplained loss and black exhaust smoke is an early sign. Once a turbo seal let's go, it will soon drink the engine completely dry of oil before you can stop it.

    Oh, don't undo them all the way. Just enough to slide the pipe off.

  • @shizenjapan

    If you can use a spanner for the jubilee clips for the ones that have a hexagon shape on them. Usually you never undo the fully just loosen them enough to slide them down. That metal tool he used is called mole grips. Definitely get yourself a pair or two they come in handy for many things.

    Hi Lucy, new to your channel. The pipe fixings are normally called Jubilee clips. You don't normally take them fully off, you just slacken them and then pull the pipes off.

    My 3.6tdv8 blew both pipes about 3mths after I bought her. New to L322 ownership my 'go to' mechanic tried not to laugh as he found the issue in 10 seconds. Never mind, he was honest (which is rare) and told me how to do it myself. I replaced the clips too as they looked original.

      @peterlinley6520 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And like fate... one of the Aftermarket pipes blew at the weekend, less than a year old.
      Going back to Land-rover OEM as they are much better quality and not hugely more expensive.

      What people forget is that a Range Rover is a big complex vehicle that cost a lot of money when new.
      If you buy one with little service history that’s 10+ years old, you can expect to spend a load of money on it.
      When they’re in good shape there’s little on the road to touch them though

    I saw a classic auction recently, where they had the car of the inventor, of the Jubilee clip. A top of the range SEL Mercedes saloon from the early 70s. I wonder what manufacturers did before, but I am sure it was invented late 1960s…

    • @richard3004
      @richard3004 ปีที่แล้ว

      Went the old ones two loops off wire and a bolt through, tighten the bolt tightened the wire, unlike the worm screw and steel band of jubilee clip, think they also fell out of use as they used to cut in deep, ok on soft metal but not great on rubber.

    • @brianwhittington5086
      @brianwhittington5086 ปีที่แล้ว

      @richard9789 More modern cars are using a spring metal band hose retainer. You loosen them with special hose band pliers, to locate on, and grip the two uneven size tags. You can use pliers, or Molegrips, but they tend to twist off the tags.

    • @richard3004
      @richard3004 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brianwhittington5086 yea iv noticed that, cheaper than jubilee clips I’d imagine and once on are secure, not got round to getting special pliers yet so still use water plump pliers on them, sometimes bit awkward but always managed. My post was in reply to @Howard Lake saying what was used before jubilee clips came along, I’ll seem to think it was the one with two thin wires that wrap around hose and essentially a small nut and bolt built in that then tightens the clip.

    • @brianwhittington5086
      @brianwhittington5086 ปีที่แล้ว

      @richard9789 Yes, you're right about the double wire and loops type Richard. They tightened with what is usually a long slot head setscrew, with a free, or captive nut, and that screw often twists or snaps with age. They fell out of favour as the separate wires could often cut through hoses like a knife, even crushing internal reinforcement in the hose. They would often twist and distort so only one wire put pressure on the hose, so a flat band makes more sense. Having spent years in the motor industry, I've actually seen examples where that type crushed a thin line that allowed deterioration from inside. It then ballooned the hose, and it blew off, leaving the wire clamp and severed end in place ! The spring band type looks to be the culprit that due to misplacement, cut into the adjacent hose on Lucy's car. They do weaken in time if they're removed too often. The idea is good, and the male and female ends that lock into the pliers, making it easier to retain grip when fitting in awkward to reach locations. Yes, waterpump pliers are a good substitute to the proper tool, but a strong new clip will launch itself across the workshop if they slip.🫢

      You're right there. I'm a Brit and, although JLR aren't really British anymore, I still kind of think of them as a little bit British and would love them to be well made. It has always infuriated me when they make fundamentally decent vehicles and then make such basic design errors like having hoses too close together! I was once a squaddie and it was the same with the Defenders. Strongly built solid chassis, engines etc. and then let down by things like flimsy switches in the cab!! 😡😡😁.......I think I'll just stick with my 2008 Toyota! 🤣
