  • Our Land Rover Range Rover L405 is grounded, because it is a serious death trap. The steering knuckle of the front suspension has a serious crack. So far, Land Rover did not issue a safety recall in Germany for this known problem, which leaves many owners lifes exposed to a large risk.
Please check out our video to learn about the high risk and immediately check out if your L405 or L494 is effected as well.
We are not liable for any harm you do to your car, your engine, your surroundings or yourself. Use the information given in this video at your own risk.
    Thanks for watching!

In defence of JLR there is no way the engineers believed the bearings would out last the knuckles……or the engine.

I had exactly the same, mine was just newer than recall and Land Rover were having non of it. I even went to the DVSA here in the UK to highlight the danger, they too not interested. Zero concern from Land Rover on this one, glad your highlighting.

In Australia a few years ago I had one of Australia's biggest selling cars. The a/c hose leaked out all the gas right on warranty expiry (on time, the car was low klms). The dealer said they had never seen that issue before however the internet was full of discussion on the exact issue. Even a mate who worked at a dealer said it's a common problem. Buy the Jag, it’s good to get challenged from time to time. Re: Metal fatigue. Many years ago, I worked for Hawker Siddley in Hatfield UK. My office window overlooked the water tank they used to test the hulls of the doomed Comet aircraft before they knew about metal fatigue. The windows of the plane were square shaped, the cracks happened in the corners.

Not sure it was so much the shape of the windows (although Boeing changed the early 707 designs to oval windows from square). It was the riveting processes that started the cracks on metal that was too thin for the pressures being applied and disapplied.

@@johnmoruzzi7236 Sorry that was not what the official report found after they created the world first submerged pressure test. A synopsis of the tests revealed:
      * G-ALYU was placed inside the tank
      * All internal cabin fixtures were
      removed and replaced with weights
      * ‘YU’ had already completed 1121
      Passenger flights
      * ‘YU’ had completed 10 pressurised
flights with de Havilland plus other
      tests
      * A further 1826 simulated cycles were
completed before fatigue failure of the
pressure cabin from a crack growing
from a rivet hole at the forward port
      escape hatch
One conclusion was the rivet holes were punched not drilled and this led to fatigue cracks.
An early Comet 2 was also put under the same testing (it had rounded windows) and the failures were in riveting not the windows.

Great video again. I am watching your videos not as a Landrover owner, but I do drive Jaguars. In fact I just bought an XJ with the three liter diesel engine so plenty of similarities. I realize I might be prejudiced but I would love to see you taking on a Jag as a project car. I am sure you’ll have an opinion or two about these cars.

Its a crap design (having the split/clamp) and the 'wrong' material. My Cayenne 955 has similar long travel double McPherson strut suspension but the knuckle is grey cast iron and the top ball joint is a taper/doesn't have a split.
The material choice of aluminium will improve ride quality (sprung Vs unsprung weight) and weight saving fuel economy but comes at the cost of potential catastrophic failure!

Driving on the left hand side of the road is a direct result of being conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte. He was left handed. Being so meant that cavalry were forced to pass the opposition with the sword hand (in this case his left) nearest to his foe. Such was his arrogance, he insisted that all his soldiers used their left hand to fight. Blame the French, but for the correct reason.

Great video. Shows how things were made wrong as you pointed out Christian. Land Rover need to deal with this. It is the bolt no doubt which is causing the issue. As you said it has no doubt been overtightened. It could have been made differently to save this issue. I as I have said previously do not own a Land Rover product but love the way you both look at the issues and address them. Very entertaining but covering issues which manufacturers do not think about properly when they make them. That was particularly the case with the recent engine rebuild you carried out.
