    Steve, Thankyou!! You are an incredible player and teacher! I won't rubbish others on TH-cam but your understanding of phrasing and most importantly your ability to describe that phrasing (not just just sticking, but feel and accents) is second to none!! I recommend you to everyone. Your lifelong dedication and great skill is self-evident but your humble and understated pedagogy takes it to another level. In my perfect world people like you would be the celebrities!! Thanks again for land of OZ!!

    Steve is the best resource for Jazz and Fusion Drum Chops. He breaks it down so simply. The way he paces correctly showing how the lick speeds up is always an eye opener. Suddenly it's all clear. All that's left to do is practice. He demystifies the hardest of chops and licks quite easily. He plays like the greats. No other channel better than this anywhere on you tube. This is all about the chops we wish we knew. Go ahead and smash it.

    This reminds me of an old jazz like down beat on bd 3 notes on left hand 3 groups of 4 over 4 groups of 3... it's got a flam added
    ... can't wait to try this tomorrow woop... Always the intelligent drummers choice.. Steve you have a wealth of knowledge and your playing is exceptional. Thank you

    Yes. I just got off my kit after doing a session of Dave weckl Style reading a lot with my left. It was awesome poping the stewart 8 and 10s especially mic ed up for an hour-and-a-half session then start singing melody in my head itch and the bunch of Alice in Chains covers. Was nice let loose forget about all the troubles in the world oh, you know what I'm saying Steve being on autopilot..kc 1981 pearl👍

    Excellent work as usual Steve.
    You know - Bruford used that lick around the kit (minus the flams) as a sort of reverse hemiola , within sextuplets or 1/8 note triplets quite often. And, it always sounded to me, like a musical melody rather than math. Very nice.

    Thanks for the amazing content, great as always. I’m a drummer living in Japan. I knew that you currently works for IW as a developer...I’m glad to hear that because I’m a big fan of CoD lol but at the same time I don’t want to believe that cuz you are too good to be a “part-time” drummer... What’s your secret to be such a good drummer with working in a company?? I really respect your life!

    • @SteveHolmesDrums
      @SteveHolmesDrums  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Video games and drumming are both passions of mine and I've tried to capitalize on opportunities in both worlds as they happened. Whatever one ended up paying the bills- I would still be doing the other! Having said that the financial consistency of the video game job is a plus, as opposed to being a freelance musician.
      I'm always practicing to be at a certain level drummer and that's always been more important to me over working as one - having a reliable job outside music has allowed me that.

    Is that a vinnie's lick for modern drummer?

  • @garydonnelly100
    @garydonnelly100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is that an AKG Perception 170 over the hat? I've been using those for overheads live and, because the freq response goes down to 20Hz, on floor toms as well. We tried it for shits n' giggles in the studio and ended up using them that way on my CD for several tracks. They actually captured a very nice bottom on the floors. As overheads live, I know when my IEMs are just right when I can hear the slap of the bead of the stick on the ride and the crashes have body with transparency. Great vid, as usual Steve!!

    • @Thedrummersalmanac
      @Thedrummersalmanac 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If what you’re doing gets noticed and reacted to in the negative by the rest of the band... it means you don’t got it and/or you didn’t put it in right context.

      I like the big sound it produces but those solutions you suggested would help that concern. I have many vids on the channel with this kit - check them out. The PHX is worth it if you like drums that sound amazing and all but tune themselves. .
