@Topjunkie I agree about jazz drumming being the most complex. My favorite drummer is Roy Haynes so I know what you mean. But that's a separate issue. There are jazz drummers who struggle getting into rock rhythms, not because it's more complex but because it's just so different. Japanese is by most metrics a more complex language than English, but the Japanese often struggle with English just because it's so different, to use a hopefully easy analogy. As for metal, which drummers do you have in mind? The best and most innovative drumming I've heard over the past 10 years has mostly been metal, especially the drummers from Plebeian Grandstand and Deathspell Omega
Honestly I wasn't expecting this level of incredible instruction and demostration when I clicked on this video. I'm going to come back to this one and learn so much. Thanks Steve Lyman!
This man was my teacher for a semester in college. He’s an intense teacher and he’s only so because he wants the best from you. We butted heads a lot but that was on me mostly because at the end of the day you knew he was drawing the very best out of you. Thank you Steve for your lessons.
Love your lesson here. Very helpful to this guitarist learning drums. I once had a band in Santa Fe with jazz drummer Bryan Lewis. He took lessons with Tony Williams when Tony was 16 years old in NYC, in exchange for Bryan giving Tony driving lessons in his truck! Fun story. Also, don't forget my friend, Pittsburgh legend Roger Humphries, Horace Silver's drummer.
I have to watch this again to actually pay attention to the lessons... because I´m stunned over the beatiful playing og sound of this dude!! Great stuff!
@@rowangraves7327 i don't know if it's a Craviotto thing so much as it's a 'tuned properly' thing. good, expensive drums can sound pretty bad in the wrong hands.
Damn that kit sounds amazing. Oh and you sound pretty great too, Steve! :) Great explanations and love how excited you get about this stuff. Sometimes I watch these vids and it feels like the person explaining it is discussing a topic they really don’t care much about or aren’t as animated by as maybe perhaps they once were . Nice to see someone so passionate about their instrument, even when sometimes being a full time musician can cause people to look at their instrument with less excitement and more of just a job. Appreciate what you’re doing here and on Instagram
I'm trying to transition to jazz drums from rock/metal but don't really know where to get started with creating fills. Now I know where to get started LOL thank you Steve!!!!
does ANYONE know how i could learn what head doing between 7:21 and 7:25??? man i hear a lot of my favorite drummers doing that but it’s not apart of their lick/fill it’s usually apart of their groove. this dude doesn’t explain it here because it’s not one of his talking points so i understand that. but man i’d love to pull that off
I DONT KNOW YOU PERSONALLY BUT YOU HAVE A FANTASTIC TOUCH AND AMAZING SOUND. I HAVENT LISTENED TO SUCH A FLUENT JAZZ DRUMMER FOR AGES!! WELL DONE MATE!!
I swear Istanbul cymbals are so fucking slept on. Even with how much more popular they’ve become they’re still underrated. They can get up there in price. But literally all their shit is well worth the price and not a cymbal they’ve made sounds bad.
Play guitar for 30 years but secretly want to be a drummer buy kit and remember all the work you put in to become a killer guitar player and the drums will need he same and think FML.
Terrific selection of fills--all very useful. For the sake of the lesson, I'd suggest slowing down some of these fills, and then working them up to speed. That way, we could easily see/hear what's happening, practice along, and work it into muscle memory (since many people won't be able to play as quickly as the video).

yes please
Filling using any part of the beat to accent while rolling between hits. Like six stroke with diddles. Smooth. Do a lesson on that.
I've never heard such a crisp yet smooth kit in my entire life
Krudensky Craviotto
I sometimes feel like jazz drummers can play any genre fairly good or good, but not all drummers can play jazz.
yeah it do be like that
I don't think that's accurate, many jazz drummers have issues playing metal and vice versa
I think that’s true of jazz musicians in general
@@vagstuten9454 No jazz pianists can rarely play classical

lick 2 3:18
lick 3 4:24
lick 4 5:30
lick 5 6:28
I'm more amazed by how he uses the traditional grip that quickly. Salute to you man.
When you use a lot it gets really easy. For me personally I am better with traditional grip then I am with match grip.

Wonderful lesson here. It all depends on the little things, when it comes to solid jazz drumming and soloing. Playing them with accuracy and finesse.
Fantastic! Love the brevity & clarity of this lesson.
Isn't the notation wrong at 7:00? The final note of the single stroke 4 has a gap after it in the video, but not in the notation...
I don't know much, but those cymbals look like works of art from up here.
Also, you're a rich man deep inside & don't want to acknowledge it, IMO.
