- This lesson walks you through the process I went through to get slick ghost-notey phrasing between accents over 16th note triplets. Fun stuff.
The basic sticking for the first fill is R l l R l l R l R l l F over 16th note triplets.
For the gear heads:
Drums are YAMAHA PHX: 22, 10, 12, 16.
Snare is a Dunnet Titanium with re-enforcement hoops inside.
Cymbals are Zildjian; 20" K Custom Dry Light Ride, 13" hats (1980's new beat top, modern K bottom), A Custom and K Crashes,
Mics are AKG/Shure through a Presonus 1818vsl recorded with Garage Band on a Macbook Air.
Shot with a Canon 7D 720p 60 exported at 24..
I’ve been playing drums forever and taken thousands of lessons, but have never seen a more complete break down of a simple phrase, making it sound complicated and musical at the same time. I’ve had drum teachers, where you go through the routine of running through the books, do some stick exercises for an hour and never leave the pad , which teaches you absolutely nothing about applying it to the drums. I can’t believe I’ve never seen you before …Great stuff,
"Dynamics seperate the boys from the men."
Best drum teacher on the internet!
GodDAMN!!! Nicely and thoroughly explained! And NO part of the video was never like, "Okay, dude, c'mon. Enough, already!" Never a boring section!
Thanks!
You once again prove you are sick, sick man, for putting this stuff on us mere mortals. I love your train of musical thought.
Internet drummer's definitely need more of your videos .
How people can dislike it??? Steve you're one of the best drummers that shows what is doing!!!
I like to know what idiot's hit thumbs down. Steve is a very talented musician and educator, Keep them coming Steve Holmes. Love your video's
Dude .. folks even put Jesus on the cross. There’s always people who are threatened by a class act like Steve or else they simply have fertilizer for brains.
@@Taleb1160 :)))))) You were my long laugh of the day
Agree
Hi everybody, who else likes to come to Steve’s magnificent lessons once in a while?
Yes and thanks!
Here I am again👍🏾
THIS IS WORLDCLASS! Phrasing, sound, dynamics. Yes it’s STEVE!
This is brilliant! Not sure why I've never stumbled upon something like this before. I will DEFINITELY be practicing this today. Thanks, Steve!
Fantastic! This dude gets right to the point and shows you how to play the lick.
Steve is such a good teacher. He looks like he would have a lot of patience with a beginner.
GREAT TEACHER. This video would keep me busy for years !! Love the use of a simple single Paradiddle.
MAN..... YOU ARE THE GREATEST TEACHER ON TH-cam!
Dudes, been playing for nearly 5 decades.wish i had ur style of teaching. at the beginning great job brother!
I love it when drum lesson video people just tells me the accents of the fill and divide the explanation of the filling strokes. One of the best drum lesson channels in youtube, definitely subscribing.
I am big fan of a lot of famous drummers but you are a drummer who opened my mind more than any other!!!!!From your first drum videos (Steve Gadd lick, blushda, 32nd note exercises with double pedal), until this last one....you are the best drum teacher on YT!
And yes, YT needs more drum videos with you ;-)
Greetings from Croatia
Totally agree
This was tripping me up at first, but then I realized I needed to read it like this ... RLL - RLL - RLR - LLF ... and it started to come together. Now need to work it up to speed. Thanks for a great lesson!!!!
In all of my years playing, I'd never made a conscious effort to take out a single stroke and insert a kick drum note in the middle of a diddle phrase or a long roll. That's a cool little nugget. Thanks, Steve.
Your internet tutorials are always welcome, Steve. I appreciate and admire your organized musical approach.
Most pedagogic and thorough drum lesson guy I've seen. Congrats and thanks.
U WECKL'D DA HECKLE OUTTA DAT AND MADE IT APPROACHABLE FOR THE COMMON MAN, U R A MOST EXCELLENT TEACHER!
Awesome and smooth! 👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely genius! Helped more than any other ghost note video I've seen on TH-cam!
i've been watching your videos for over 10 years you have done so much for my playing thank you.
These lessons have helped transform my playing and innerstanding of music and timing.
Thank you so much!!
I was just about to write something very similar to maeu59's comment which should be directly above my comment. Steve, you are GREAT teacher. I just learned how to play STEP 1 very cleanly in a matter of minutes because of your teaching style. You have gift! Keep going and THANK YOU.
You really are incredible at explaining things. Such a difference. Gifted educator. Thank you.
Steve unlocks another treasure many of us have been searching for. Outstanding! I learned what and how to practice this one. Soon I will amaze my friends. Thanks, Steve!
You're awesome. Thank you for posting these videos. They are easy to follow and build upon. Greatly appreciated
Steve....I haven't played drums in about 25 years, recently returning, buying a nice set, and taking weekly lessons. You are the find I was looking for online. Your playing is great and explanation superb. I watch a video of yours, and immediately to to my drum set and practice that lesson. Thanks so much for doing what you do, sincerely.
You're awesome! Thanks for making complicated stuff look easy to learn!
The quality of this video is outstanding man! From someone who puts together some videos too, i appreciate the work gone into this, please keep em coming man!!
Wow!!! Great lesson!!! Whole new dimension of ideas! 🔥🔥🔥
Great lesson Steve!!!
wow! thank you for this. you watch guys like vinnie and it's over your head a lot of the time and this really helps and gives something to latch onto. very much appreciated!!
You're one the few drummers that make videos where you actually drum. Other videos are 95% talking and 5% drumming. Thank you for being a bad ass. This video is freaking good.
Btw. Lmao @ 9:57 "Sorry about that at the end there"
I went to a Steve Houghton clinic in 2010 or so and he broke down this right hand lead method of playing through the Ted reed book (swinging the 8ths of course, ghosting the left hand triplets). It opened up a lot for me and it’s become a staple for my more motivated students. Adding the bass drum in a systematic way like this is awesome and definitely not something I was able to come up w organically. That’s why we look to the greats like Mr. Steve Holmes here. What a slick player and teacher
I just found your lessons. Very nice chops. You have given me endless things to work on. Thanks for taking the time to post these lessons.
Awesome lesson Steve, thanks for sharing it!
That's right Speecless ! Great lesson !
Wow! That came right together right away, Steve! Thank you so much for that!!!👍👍👍
This is 9 years old and it’s still blowing my mind. Lol. Damn dude…you’re freaking awesome! I wish I could play like this!!!!
I'am lovin this lesson and I'am not even half way thru it! more lessons Steve! you rock dude!
Just started getting into his vids. Very creative with his rudiments, awesome dynamics, and is super relaxed. Been so impressed, I picked up a couple books suggested, and make sure to dedicate 1/2 hour a day working on his swing/grooves. I realized real fast, I gotta really get relaxed before I start fellin' it.
Great drumming and very nice sounding drums Steve.
This is so fun to do over triplets...excellent teacher!🥁🎶🤘
Great phrase, and very handy like you said. Nice! A lot of great things you could do with this phrase as far as sticking goes while keeping the accents as an exercise. Double paradiddles, ratamacues, etc. with the accents. Thanks for this!
Beautiful timing, very nice sounding snare. Fantastic thank you
I totally agree with everyone. I watch every drumming video I can find and Steve is the best instructor I have come across. I belong to DRUMEO & Stanton Moore's web school but it's Steve's videos that I get the most out of. I think I learn more in one of Steve's videos than I do in about 12 of all the other videos put together. I wish he would start an On Line SCHOOL (hint, hint Steve).
Thanks a lot Bill.
Genius! Paradiddle part is truly inspiring!
Man not only are you seriously great, you know how to TUNE
awesome lesson, love your approach.
Great Stuff as always.. Loved the subtle volume cut when talking bout controlling dynamics! :)
Love this playing style. It's like a bit of Thomas Lang and Peter Erskine rolled into Steve.
Steve your concepts are amazing. This lesson is opening up solo possibilities that I have never experienced before. You rock my friend.
great drummer and musical educator
Thanks for inspiration ;)
Perfect vid and demonstration.
Cheers from Belgium
This is one of best videos in internet believe me I watch a lot but a lot of videos and this video is a hall of famer by far. You can just do this a you will be killing it. Thanks Steve!!!
These are excellent ideas and a great breakdown of them. I’m definitely adding this to my kit practice routine. Thanks! I know it’s been years since you posted this video, but I just stumbled across it this week for first time. Better late than never :)

Wow! I love the way you break that down to make it look so easy. All your videos are great and I just subscribed now.
Really love that style of drumming....It reminds me of Bun E. Carlos...... Keep up the good work.....
That was brilliant. Thanks 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😀☮️
2:55 ... couldn't figure out why this wasn't sounding quite right for me, until I heard you mention that bass drum note right before the downbeat. For me, that's the key.
Youre an inspriarion , on every level. Thanks so much Steve.
I've learned more from this guy than any other "Drum School" online. Thank you.
I totally AGREE.
Good stuff !!!
Awesome stuff Steve. Really helpful. Thanks!!
@steve Holmes man you are a natural true educator. Thank you so much for giving me some nice extra ammo to work with. I already play in that style where I use lots of triplets ( what do you expect I am 61😎)but your break down of this phrase can be sooooooo useful in creating so much more to work with in musical contexts. Thanks a million. I have subscribed and already shared with my close drummer network. Respect ✊
Awesome lesson Steve !!!
