    The Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute made quite a short, sharp impression when it launched, and we put it up against two of the best-selling and most well-regarded 4WD dual cab utes in its segment to see how it stacked up. Yep, it went up against the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, and boy, what a test it was.
    From towing a huge caravan to loading these utes up to their payload limits, to driving on road and adventure testing them off road at one of our favourite 4x4 spots, this test had a bit of everything.
    Watch Marcus Craft and Matt Campbell put the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux and Mercedes X-Class Utes to the test - and tell you which they thought was best.

    Hello, i had a Hilux Vigo, Mitsubishi L200 HP and now i drive a Ranger Wildtrak, by far the most comfortable of the trio, it just feel more substantial all around.
    Good call.

    Well this showed us that you can throw the Mercedes in the bin, and choose between the Ranger or the Hilux. Ranger for all round comfort and performance, or the Hilux for off road capability and long term reliability.

      The Ranger seems to be doing better than the Hilux for long term reliability these days. Ford aren’t the ones being sued by their customers about mechanical problems...

      @@gavinwolfe3238 Ford have had their problems too, but the F series is a much loved vehicle. Simple to fix relatively speaking. Best thing Ford ever made, however those Toyotas are historically a great vehicle

      As always, Ford has durability and dependability problem when it comes to the engine and transmission.... don't trust Ford anymore after too many problems with their models. Toyota is the best when it comes to performance, durability and dependability....

    I’ve owned both a Hilux and a Ranger, and I’ve driven quite a few of both for work (in the bush and on the road) - of ages ranging from 20 years old to current models. I haven’t had much of a chance to really push any of the rangers to their limits in the bush but the few times I have, they’ve done very, very well. I’ve certainly towed some very serious loads (3+ tons) and in my experience, the Rangers won the towing hands-down. They have the power and they handle so nicely when loaded right up.
    My current work ute, a Ranger, has only done 155,000kms so I have yet to see how it lasts when compared to the old hiluxes out there with 500,000+ km on the clock. I love Toyota’s reliability, it’s one thing I don’t think many other brands can boast quite so loudly about.

      Contract92 do you think this new gen lux is making use of it's predecessor's reliability? I've heard the new hilux isn't the Ute it used to be

    • @MP-78
      @MP-78 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      But Toyota skimps out on so much. What you buy should not be a lemon which a Ranger is not other than that reliability alone is no logic for sacrificing on what is also very important like tech, equipment, refinement and overall driving experience which matters everytime you drive.

    • @TheIdeasGuy
      @TheIdeasGuy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      MANU PURI those things might matter to soft city people. I’m quite happy with a reliable vehicle that has air conditioning. The electric mirrors in my Ranger are handy when they get bumped around out in the bush, but I wouldn’t care if they stopped making everything else (electric windows etc.). ... that stuff is all just there waiting to break at an inopportune moment.

  • @TheJohnChocolate
    @TheJohnChocolate 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Say if they were all the exact same price, for the benefit of an investment and/or bang for buck in regards to longevity, I would choose the hilux. Yes, the Hilux is a bit of a rough ride, worse interior and lower towing capacity than the video winning ranger, the Hilux over engineering and simplicity strengthens it's reliability. This is why government and non-government organisations supply the simple hilux SR to a lot of outback and rural communities. They're just a dependable vehicle.

    I live in South Africa and with my export business I often travel to different countries to do training with my distributers, at first I used a Hilux to travel as everyone said it would be the best because of how reliable it is, I have never been in a bakkie ( South African word for Ute ) that has broken down and given me more trouble before, I switched over the Ranger 3.2 and so far with putting 480 000 kilometers on the clock, I've never had to take her in besides for the normal service intervals. The Hilux used to be a very good bakkie but it has gone downhill in all aspects since the early two-thousands, ford has taken its place and has destroyed the competition when it comes to driving through the African bush

    I’m a Toyota fan & would happily choose the Ford as well, BUT, I’m curious to see where Mercedes takes this in 3-5 years from this 1st attempt.....will they learn from these comparison reviews? Maybe.....will they outperform the Ford or Toyota? Highly unlikely, but it’s worth watching the potential growth.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rangatology Of course they can. All they need to do is base it on their own platform and use their own commercial vehicle expertise and not use Nissan's. They'll have the best then. I don't understand why they just didn't develop their own platform when they have decades of experience making commercial vehicles. Not to mention they have their own excellent 2.2 litre diesel which they also use in their commercial vehicles that is already developed, known to be reliable and can come with 150kw and 500nm. Yet they use a damn Nissan engine and gearbox! Same for the key. Why did they use a Nissan key. They also have the best interiors in the passenger cars and even the V Class van has a better interior. Why use Nissan switches. They went about it all wrong. It is a Mercedes and people will hold them to a higher standard. The Navara is good in its own right but it is not good enough for a Mercedes badge.

      Absolutely, this review is Soo biased even the blind can see. No pick up in the market today can beat Hilux in terms of fuel efficiency, workability, reliability and durability (so long as they have same engine size) and everyone knows it. They are just marketing for Ranger. Otherwise, if the Range is superior to the other two, why is it's price cheapest??? It doesn't make sense at all.

      Every off road park has Rangers doing fine every weekend.

    Hi CarsGuide, what was so bad about the X-Class offroad performance? I understand from other reviews, that the Navara Gearbox/ Drivetrain is a very strong combination off-road. Adding sufficient ground-clearance and a decent wading depth I would like to understand the short comings a bit more. Did the X-Class struggle with terrain the other two didn't? Thanks.

    It’s fair to say they are all utes and what not but you can see what each company does concentrate on with its product, Hilux is built towards off road type of use, and Ford wants the road more than off, and Benz being a new comer to the industry it still does want to be flashy in which I think because of the shift in the market Benz is for those that like the idea of a Ute but not a work horse, than the other two.

    Dear Australians,
    is Ute short for utility? and why don't you call it a pickup?

    • @tbduggan85
      @tbduggan85 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Ute is short for utility. The term ute refers to both ‘dual-cab utes’ like these and ‘utes’ which are sedans / regular cars with the back turned into a tray, so a 2 seater passenger car with a tray that is not raised up and not four wheel drive. We don’t call them pickups because we aren’t American. Apologies that you waited three years for an answer, but we Australians have been busy fighting for survival agains crocs, tassie devils and drop bears.
