    JDSPorsche here, I'm pleased to see the MAF worked out and what a difference. Just one thing, the instructions for setting them up - it's automatic on a Lambda closed loop car but not on the 87 as it doesn't have an O2 sensor. The blue plugs are where you can take the measurement or without cats at the exit of the tail pipe. You need to adjust CO to 1% by using the potentiometer above the fuse board. The reason is it may have been adjusted for the old MAF. The wings are aluminium by the way and it's evident that the ODO is not working, likely a broken gear wheel (they all do that).

    • @SuperRon
      @SuperRon  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear from you and thanks so much for your service 👍 we did check the CO and was all good so left it alone! Well spotted on the mileage, that is something he wanted us to look into too. Thanks for watching 😁

      I remember visiting John in Cambridge and getting my MAF done. Probably one of the first. It transformed my old S4. Glad you have carried on his work. I remember doing the cog for the odemeter myself, they will lose teeth. The HVAC actuators for the flaps are pneumatic and the diaphragms will split inside. Can even be patched with bicycle innertube repair kit!

    The headlights were designed that way so they would be washed with the car. I have owned over 10 from 79 to 89. Changing a clutch is so easy you don’t have to pull the trans just the cover and loosen the torque shaft and pull out the twin plate clutch the cars are amazing and deserved it’s car of the year award in 1977 truely a car before it’s time and still completely comfortable in the company of todays super cars. There is no substitute

    I owned a manual 928S4 over three decades ago. I remember putting 137,000 km on the car before trading it in for a 928 GTS.
    It was a fast car, with excellent brakes, but it had a harsh ride, because it had the sport suspension. When I parted from the car, the steering rack was shot, the differential was making funny noises, the central exhaust was blowing air, the clutch needed replacement, as did the brake discs and pads. I would like to add that the navy blue metallic paint was full of stone chips (the front of the car needed repainting), not to mention the "sanded" windshield. I used to drive the car really hard across the unrestricted German freeways and enjoyed it immensely. My first GTS, which was a definite improvement over the S4, got the same treatment.

    Tony Levine (sp?) the project manager for the 928 project was a fan of the Lamborgini Miura, the light styling of the 928 is a direct implementation of that.. The only 2 cars I am aware of that have the lights this way. The body is aluminum not plastic.

I have a manual, but from what I understand the automatics generally start of in second gear so this might also contribute to the slow off the line feel. I know some put in a "drop down switch" to over come this.

    The Auto in D pulls away in 2nd gear, you need to drop the Auto selector into 2 it then starts in 1st gear off the line (Porsche logic in there somewhere)

    • @nigelha3699
      @nigelha3699 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because its a Mercedes 4 speed auto. They all start in 2nd, but properly adjusted will change it 1st with a quick prod [not kickdowm]. Or pull lever to 2 when stopped, it will start in first. Can take back to drive or 3 and it will still start off in 1st. They have a very high stall speed, so the auto is sluggish, really need to use the lever and if any one read the manual, Porsche say keep in 3 around town,

    You said the fenders were plastic. No, that's aluminum. Same with the doors, roof, and hood. The rear quarter panels and hatch are steel. The bumpers are plastic, and they were the first of their kind in any automobile. The rest of the manufacturers were using surf board bumpers or chrome, and the 928 was a poly clamshell in '78!

    Great video: Although I would have liked to have seen a pre and post dynotest with full torque and power curves... I warrant if it was necessary to have changed leads and plugs after such few miles - it would have added a large bill for the customer. The distibuter caps perhaps. Fuel/air filter absolutely... Rather dated technology but interior looks very nice. It must have been retrimmed. With the odometer not working it is certainly difficult to decide what useage it has really had.. I would say it needs a good workover. Some underbody parts look a bit crappy. As they seem to have the value now it would be worth doing.. Of course any decent modern vehicle would leave it for dust - imagine the 928 against a Type R Civic for example? I know where I would spend the money. I had an 928 S2 back in the day - a comfortable but lumbering underperforming vehicle - and it cost an extreme amount of money to maintain..
    I agree the headlights (in the up position) look ugly and will be really prone to stone chip damage... Wet road handling would be an accident waiting to happen...
