    That is a great system you've put together there. I wish I had kept my old hardware from that era. Back then though I was always upgrading, and passing along my old components to friends and family. I'd love to put together a Win 98 box again at some point. As for the BSOD, man I remember that. It always seemed that any little error would lock my PC up. It was so frustrating, lol.

    Nice! I love seeing these overkill builds for retro operating systems :D If you didn´t do any preparations for your SSD, it might be the reason for the problems you faced. I´m about to upgrade my Win98 build with a brand new SSD and I´m also filming the project. People wiser than myself educated me that there´s a bunch of preparation work that needs to be done before installing Windows 98. I try to publish the video by the end of this month in case you´re interested :)

    Great video thanks! I have a similar Windows 98 Monster machine in my collection. Mine has a Core 2 Duo E6750 with 2.66 GHz, 1 GB DDR2 667 RAM, Intel 945 chipset, SATA 2 controller, 128 GB SSD and a Geforce 7600 GT for PCIe x16 with 256 MB RAM. I also run two Voodoo 2 SLI cards in this PC that are connected via a PCI to PCIe bridge. So you can get these cards to work in modern PCs. Every game runs almost no more loading times. The SSD manages almost 300 MB / sec even under Windows 98 ... I had the Soundblaster 16 problem you described, which is also due to the modern mainboard. I also had these BlueScreens so that I had to switch to another sound card model. So it wasn't live, but a simple Cmedia CMI sound card. But it also works in the Dos. Many greetings, Chris

    Also got with the build a 256MB 128-bit FX 5600 AGP graphics card, semi-passively cooled with a copper heatsink and a big quiet 120mm fan blowing air over it nearby, along with 512MB of Crucial PC133 Cas 2 SDRAM, dual 80GB 7200rpm PATA HDDs for programs and data, and a Seasonic SS-350ET PSU, with an AOpen MX3S Intel 815 chipset motherboard as the backbone for the rest of the system.

    I was going nuts trying to get SB16 emulation going using an Aureal Vortex 2 on a 775 board and P4 under Win98SE. After several reinstalls I found the solution for me was to install the sound card and drivers before virtually everything else, and in particular before any USB 2 drivers. I found one of the USB 2 hubs on the motherboard was taking IRQ resources that caused the SB16 drivers to always BSOD. I've now got that hub disabled, but I still appear to have functioning USB 2 as well as the SB16 emulation. I would also recommend getting yourself a PS/2 key board and mouse to help with troubleshooting - you can remove them once all the hardware is installed.

    i'm a little late to the party but, windows 98 and win9x by extension doesn't care about whether or not the device is PCI express as long as your device has drivers. they're a quite a few devices that are native PCI express that have drivers for win9x. the geforce 6 series PCIe and ati x300-x800 series have driver support.

    The Sound Blaster Live is really underrated. I get why people don't like it but honestly every computer I laid my hands on as a kid no matter for school or home had one in it and they were plenty capable. The only part im confused on is going with the PCi instead of finding a board with Socket 775 and an AGP slot. Phil's Computer lab got one. I thought PCi graphics cards were expensive. Though with the relative cost of the other parts I'm sure it wasn't a big hit and the card works plenty well in the end. Nice job.

  • @karlnigan

    The SoundBlaster live Dos compatibility is only compatible with motherboard which have ISA bridge (even without ISA slot) or ISA emulation mode. That was the trick put in place by Ensoniq with their PCi cards and the reason why Creative bought ensoniq back in the day. The creative and ensoniq PCI cards used isa emulation mode from the motherboard to tricks the system with a bunch of wrappers and TSR under Dos. If you lack this functionality, then, you have an error message that the card cannot access this area. You can maybe try aureal vortex or yamaha 71x cards, but these cards are a bit expensive. P3 motherboard or P4 socket 478 motherboard still have this ISA emulation mode (until ICH7 chipset I believe), this disappears on lga775 motherboard. The most appropriate would be a Amd CPU with AMD cheap motherboard, usually they used VIA chipset. VIA and AMD tend to support old technologies to support industrial machines.

    Nice mobo, I picked up the same one but in ATX size with a PCI-E and a few extra ports. It's the stupidest thing too, Intel just expanded the PCB but the ports and required extended traces only take a small fraction of the added area. So there's like a chunk of PCB 20 by 30 centimetres with nothing on it.... I figured I'm gonna use SSD by attaching it to that empty spot with velcro.
    The chipset cooler on those Intel OEM mobos is from hell. I don't know what genius decided to attach a cooler by soldering it to the board with wires.

    The lack of AGP is a bit of a hinderance for the build. I didn't think you could get that kind of video performance out of PCI but if it's working, I guess it's working.
    I had issues with SBLive in a W98 build using a Dell Dimension. I think it cited IRQ conflicts, and as other stated, it's particular about that. I think I was able to get SB16 working in DOS mode but not in Windows which was an okay compromise.

  • @FOIL_FRESH
    @FOIL_FRESH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    ok so a few things about the sb 16 emulation. first there are a lot of newer chipsets that dont support the D-DMA and int-IRQ functions. that might be something as the 775 chipset is so new. another thing is simply the motherboard pci resources - changing the slots can help with the sb16 emulation. i tried for hours and hours to get it working with an nforce chipset (athlon xp generation) and after trying everything i found the advice that it simply cannot work.

  • @tipstricksss1453
    @tipstricksss1453 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd use a retro case and 256 MB Ram computers of that time never had that much Ram in them and 512MB is too much, Windows 98 will never use all of that plus it can cause compatibility issues with some old games. For the hard drive I'd use a SATA hard drive or IDE to SATA adapter if there is no SATA connector on the board. SATA drives are dirt cheap and plentiful. Windows 98 has no Trim SSD support and can get funky with the OS over a short time depending on how much the computer is used. .

    As for the sound, I get the same error when it tries to install SB16 emulation under W98 (I also use SB0100, MB is Asrock 4Core-Dual SATA2), found no solution yet. But do take a look at this:
    www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=38927
    With this drivers the crappy built-in Windows 98 emulation of SBPro and General MIDI gets pretty smooth and compatible, so you can run majority of games that support General MIDI with no problems. No FM/OPL3 in W98 though (it has no built-in W98 emulation), but I managed to successfully install DOS drivers for SB0100 in pure DOS 7 (SB16 + Adlib + OPL2/3 + General MIDI + MT32 emulation). These drivers require an extended memory manager, and EMM386 keeps hanging on that MB, so I used QEMM8. Games compatibility is excellent, but not perfect, it may require fiddling with IRQ/DMA settings or changing PCI slots for the card. So, some way or the other, I think it's totally possible to get sound in DOS games on your setup )

      I'm alive. I have half of the footage for upgrading the PC into a dual boot Windows XP/98 gaming PC, but I just moved and the holidays happened.
      Thanks for your patience. It makes me so happy to know someone's looking forward to seeing my next video!

      Kind of. I put the Sound Blaster in a different computer and it just works after following the same steps. I think it had to do with the motherboard, as others have pointed out.
