I experimented with numerous Nvidia drivers to see which one, along with nGlide would work with all my Windows 98 games. To begin with Windows 98 does not like video cards with more than 256mb of ram onboard, so I chose the FX5700 AGP video card, which has a cooling fan, and 256mb of ram onboard. The driver I use is the Detonator driver version 56.64, that along with nGlide version 1.05 works with all my Glide based games, and I have a great Direct 3D experience as well. My motherboard is a Pentium 4 (ASUS P4P800-VM) with a 3.0ghz CPU rocking 2GB of PC3200 ram; there is a patch online allowing Windows 98 to utilize over 512mb of ram, so I use 2GB (4GB caused issues with the sound card), and I have a 120GB SSD for storage. I use a SoundBlaster Audigy sound card, and an LG Lightscribe DVD. For sound I have Bose Companion 3 speakers, and I used the DVI output from the video card to HDMI adapter to the 27" Acer LED backlit gaming monitor. nGlide converts all Glide calls to Direct 3D, this allows me to run all the games at high resolutions without stretching the pixels. Many of the Windows 98 games work, and look best under 3dfx drivers; but, nGlide; is the next best thing. I was never interested in older DOS games either. I have 62 games for this computer, many are Glide games. The GeForce 6200 requires a much newer driver version, which makes it incompatible with many older Windows 98 games, it will not play well with nGlide as a result either. I use DirectX 9.0a as there are known issues with 9.0c. And, the Unofficial SP3 also creates problems I found, like glitching on startup and lagging, or even freezing up on shutdown, I got the "It is now safe to turn your computer off" message in big bold letters on the screen, it is totally unnecessary based on the forums online. Unreal Tournament looks stunning on my PC, it's my favourite first person shooter, next would be Serious Sam the first edition; but, I run that on my high end Windows XP computer with over 80 games. I have a 2nd Windows 98 PC with a 3dfx Voodoo 1 paired with an Nvidia MX400 32mb, 256mb of PC100 ram, AMD K6-2/500 processor, SB Live, Bose Companion 2 speakers, 19" LED monitor. Need For Speed 2SE running in Glide mode looks fantastic, and I have POD running in Glide also; 42 games in total including Wing Commander Prophecy. I am 63 years old in 2024, and have been gaming since 1997; everyone needs a hobby, this is mine. Hope someone finds this info useful, I love retro gaming! :)

Just finished a win 98 build with p4 650 oced to 4.3 ghz on a asus p5p800 with 2 sticks of corsair xms 3200 c2 v1.1 256 mb and a fx 5950 ultra, a ssd and a sb audigy 2 zs. Also have athlon xp 3200+ build oced to 2.6 ghz on a msi k7n2 delta 2 platinum with the same ram and radeon 9800 xt and same sound card. The p4 has tripple boot with win 98, xp and win 10. For the dos drivers there is a guide on making audigy 2 zs work on the internet. Probably works for live cards as well.

Why would you risk security of your system by putting such a vulnerable OS on the Internet? My Win98 machine is isolated from the internet and from the rest of my home network. I copy files to it by an SD card, which is set to read-only so the win98 machine cannot write anything to it.

I use a Yamaha YMF-724F PCI sound card in my 98se/2K PIII 800EB build, with genuine OPL3 FM hardware support in DOS, using PhilsComputerLab drivers off his website, along with a proper cone speaker for BIOS beeps. Also got with the build a 256MB 128-bit FX 5600 AGP graphics card, semi-passively cooled with a copper heatsink and a big quiet 120mm fan blowing air over it nearby, along with 512MB of Crucial PC133 Cas 2 SDRAM, dual 80GB 7200rpm PATA HDDs for programs and data, and a Seasonic SS-350ET PSU, with an AOpen MX3S Intel 815 chipset motherboard as the backbone for the rest of the system.

Maybe a bit late, but i see there no problem. I recently had a 6800GS 512mb in my W98 PC, untill i switched to a X850XT. I switched to ATI cause i needed something more powerfull, but the compatibility was great with the 6800GS, i just wanted to see how the big V-Ram boy would keep up. But i saw no benefits and 256mb is more than enough.

You could go USB for your 3.5 inch floppy and leave the 5.25 inch plugged in and see if that allows for both. I only have a 3.5 in mine. But I run all my games including CDs from images to keep the games and hardware in good shape. Also my Windows 98se computer boots just fine from a 250gb drive.

@@DeadMouseis I thought it was a hardware conflict. Yes in fact early in the video he says the controller only supports one or the other so you at the very least need some sort of expansion card for another controller and that is a little bit of a long shot that that won't have a I/0 conflict with the current controller. USB would at least work off the USB controller and not a floppy controller. I have never had any problems reading a floppy disc on USB with any external devices. As long as it is at least Windows 98 or newer. I don't know what you mean by read funny.

i'm a little late to the party but, windows 98 and win9x by extension doesn't care about whether or not the device is PCI express as long as your device has drivers. they're a quite a few devices that are native PCI express that have drivers for win9x. the geforce 6 series PCIe and ati x300-x800 series have driver support.

Hi, did you test some Windows 98 older games to see how they look? I ask this because Nvidia dropped fog table and 8 bit palletized support from 6000 and on, and I don’t know how many games are affected. If you can, please, test "Thief II", mission 1, check if you can see the stars in the sky near the moon, they are white dots. Thanks

I'd use a retro case and 256 MB Ram computers of that time never had that much Ram in them and 512MB is too much, Windows 98 will never use all of that plus it can cause compatibility issues with some old games. For the hard drive I'd use a SATA hard drive or IDE to SATA adapter if there is no SATA connector on the board. SATA drives are dirt cheap and plentiful. Windows 98 has no Trim SSD support and can get funky with the OS over a short time depending on how much the computer is used. .

if you truly want the ultimate windows 98 pc in terms of performance whilst still being able to run the vast majority of games then you will need a Nvidia GeForce FX 5950 ultra 256MB. its the last of the graphics card to support Table Fog & 8-bit Paletted Textures, you can brute force the legendary 45.23 graphics card drivers to work with it giving you the ultimate compatibility with games form the early 90s all the way up to 2004 Next you will need the legendary AM2NF3-VSTA motherboard. Its has 2 SATA port both can be used at the same time with windows 98 as well as both of the IDE port and floppy port. I think its the only motherboard that can do this. most motherboard will require you to use SATA emulation in the BIOS meaning you can only use 1 IDE and 1 SATA port. This motherboard also allows for you to use DMA with all your drives :) another good feature with this motherboard is that it supports the AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition 6MB cache @ 3500MHz and 2000MHz FSB The motherboard has 100% compatibility with Windows 98SE, So no missing drivers. Its also incredibly stable. and supports dual channel DDR2 RAM. It has amazing overclocking ability's for CPU and RAM. You will also need an LS120 Drive. It is PC/AT compatible and can read and right 720kB / 1.44MB disk and of course 128MB floppy disks it can reed and wright standard floppy disk much faster than a standard floppy disk drive. the 128MB floppy disk are easy to come by new old stock in the UK :D The last peace of the puzzle is the sound card, you will need the legendary Diamond Monster Sound MX300 Aureal Vortex 2 A3D PCI. Its the best PCI sound card for windows 98 in terms of compatibility with DOS and sound quality. If you want anything that is better than this sound card you will need to go to ISA sound cards. This is my setup. I have spent years trying to build the ultimate Windows 98 PC with the most compatibility and performance. I have tried hundreds of motherboard, graphics cards, sound card and hundreds of different drivers over the past 7 Years. I hope this information has been helpfall or at the verry lest interesting fore who ever reads this. Give me a message for any other suggestion. and yes I have considered putting a voodoo 2 12MB SLI in this pc and hooking it up to my FX 5950 ultra. However I just use the glide emulation but defiantly a consideration on my end :D :)

Great video thanks! I have a similar Windows 98 Monster machine in my collection. Mine has a Core 2 Duo E6750 with 2.66 GHz, 1 GB DDR2 667 RAM, Intel 945 chipset, SATA 2 controller, 128 GB SSD and a Geforce 7600 GT for PCIe x16 with 256 MB RAM. I also run two Voodoo 2 SLI cards in this PC that are connected via a PCI to PCIe bridge. So you can get these cards to work in modern PCs. Every game runs almost no more loading times. The SSD manages almost 300 MB / sec even under Windows 98 ... I had the Soundblaster 16 problem you described, which is also due to the modern mainboard. I also had these BlueScreens so that I had to switch to another sound card model. So it wasn't live, but a simple Cmedia CMI sound card. But it also works in the Dos. Many greetings, Chris
