    Great video, I'm also making an overkill windows 98 machine so seeing what everyone else has made is very inspiring!
    But nonetheless I'll look forward for future content!

    I've been thinking of building a retro machine. Maybe I'll go for the same specs or similar. I'm seeing forum posts of people even playing Windows XP games like Far Cry, Halo, etc on that card. You can get SD Card IDE interfaces so I could probably have two separate SD cards (Similar to how LGR handles things), one with Windows98/DOS and the other for Windows XP so I can play anything from the 90's up to the early mid-2000s on a single system.

    • @RiksRandomRetro
      @RiksRandomRetro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep good call! I think that sort of machine would be very well served with a dual boot with XP in the mix. It really is through and through a more XP generation system but it's a fun exercise bending it to work with 98 hah.

    Nice. You inspired me. I just bought an MSI mobo with the same chipset, an Athlon 64 3200+, 2x 512Mb RAM (probably will only use one 512mb) and an all-copper thermaltake heatsink. All for only £35 delivered. I already have a few options for audio and video but I will probably go for Soundblaster Live and Geforce 4600.

      Oh awesome! It's fun to push the limit and see what you can get away with. Sometimes you wonder if it's truly worth it... but then you get it all working and it is!

    The 9800 pro is awesome, I built myself a Windows 98 retro pc, with a celeron 430 that has exactly the same performance as the athlon 64 3200, consuming half, with a 64gb ssd, but I can't get a better graphics card yet, I have a Ge Force 6200 turbo cache, for sound a sound blaster live

    my overkill Windows 98 machine is a Athlon XP 2200 system with 512MB of ram has a similair Radeon XT card but the geforce 6200 also works perfectly well under Windows 98 also a 320GB hard drive. Going to put it to Windows 2000 since thats what it had while I was growing up

      Very nice! It's pretty cool the wide support Windows 98 had and how far you can take it. I used to dual boot between 2000 and 98 to have a little bit of both. At least in the beginning when 2000 didn't like many of the games I tried to play on it.

    Hey Rik, just building very similar retro rig, but I've bought intel (prescott at 2.8Gigs).. do you think though, that any pcie gpu with support (i've read that latest supported is catalyst 6.2 through ME and 6.2 says that supports upto X1900) will work with win98se? Have you tried? If not, still, maybe i'll look into that. I'm very curious and they say that, thanx to unoff.sp3, many things is now possible, for example 2.5Gigs of RAM (max).. keep up a good work edit: wooooow, i used to have the very same model monitor as you and it served me well and for a long time.. then i gave it to my mother.. edit no 2: one more question if you don't mind.. that RAM, is it DDR or DDR2?

    • @RiksRandomRetro
      @RiksRandomRetro  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there. A lot to unpack! I've certiainly seen and heard people getting PCIe working under Windows 98 but I think you might see diminishing returns as far as what you get out of it when XP does still work quite well unless you specifically want that DOS or older title support.
      Yeah that monitor is a beast although I struggle to find room for it due to the sheer size hah.
      I'll have to go back and look at the machine because honestly I haven't used it for a bit but fairly certain it was just DDR memory. Assuming it's already overkill again there are some diminishing returns in how far you want to push 98 more than "just because we can".
      Appreciate the support and for watching!

  • @MrWhtgst
    @MrWhtgst 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice I have a similar machine for 98 I love it. Mine is an Athlon xp 2200+, sound blaster live, 9800 pro, voodoo 3 2000, 512 MB ram, and 128 GB HD. Man I'm jealous of that monitor tho. My viewsonic ef70 just took dump on me and I switched over to a dell ultra sharp. It sucks moving over from a crt to an early 00 tft screen. Oh well ive been looking around for another crt or a repair. However the crt max res was 1280x1024 which the dell is 1600x1200 and I was surprised to see how well the radeon handles most of the games ive thrown at it so far. Its niche and would never happen but it would be neat to get an modern low latency active pixel oled 4:3 high refresh monitor for us weirdos.

      @RiksRandomRetro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice! I do love having the option of just going total overkill like this as sure it's not exactly period correct but it's a fun project. And yeah this monitor has been a champ even though it's super bulky I can never bring myself to getting rid of it just because of how special it is. Right now I'm using a later Dell E772p monitor plugged into my modern computer just to have the option. Can't give up the CRT life!

      Thanks it did add a nice color pop! And unfortunately no I dropped it after someone else mentioned that the chipset specifically has compatibility problems with the soundblaster DOS emulation. It likely explains why none of the guides I tried to follow worked at all. This one will have to remain a Windows machine for now.

    • @RiksRandomRetro
      @RiksRandomRetro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are most certainly right! The idea here was just a "because we can" haha. It's not necessarily practical to run Windows 98 like this but it's specifically about pushing the limit to see if it was possible and sure enough this is one speedy 98 machine. To better tap into the resources of the machine 2000 or XP of course would be better. But maybe not as much fun...
