I actually have some to add to this for once. One day I was all chadded up on my Ducati with full race leathers on. And a kid was in her car seat with the window down. She was mesmerized by the bike and I gave her a fist bump. She was so excited to get some love from the power ranger on the red sport bike. I will never forget her face, one of my favorite moments on a bike.

Exactly. I always try to get the kids excited. A hand wave, a silly look, a controlled burst of speed, something.
I've been on a highway many times to have a small child starring at me while I'm doing 65 next to the cager. A small wave of the hand was all it took to get them excited. Or I'll rev, only on request by a kid in a parking lot or something.

When you ride a motorcycle people think you're a bad guy.
Kids, on the other hand, think your a good guy and wave to you.
It makes me wonder why this is.

I always get waves from kids at crosswalks. Totally makes my day. I'll see a kid with a bicycle, point to his/her helmet and say "cool helmet!" That usually gets a shy smile as a response. I'll see a kid staring at me on my bike in a parking lot and ask the parent if the kids wants to blip the throttle.

Hello Diogo S. Yeah a bike can really mellow someone out, think of how History
would have been if Hitler rode a SuzukiM90 around Germany, his woman Eva
Braun with her boobs pushed into Hitlers back, after riding all day, go to the
Hoffbrau pub and have a few pitchers of Germany's best beer, go to a hotel and
swap clothing with Eva and have some hot sex, I mean who could feel crummy
      about that?

I often argue with my mother about this after I started riding 3 years ago, about whether or not that guy on the bike is being an arse or not. An example. We were on the freeway following a guy on a bike (Ducati Monster), he downshifts to pass the car ahead.
Car was moving about lanes, generally being an inefficient driver. Bike was lound and my mother took offense, to why he was passing for no reason. (car in front was being a jack wagon) which on a bike could be dangerous as you all know.
We end up arguing about motorcycles, how safe, unsafe they are. How we have too many
unresponsible riders, and to be fair this guy was wearing his Nikes on the freeway.
Now of course mom won this argument, because you'll never win a battle with your mother...

Because people are such bad drivers, they rarely understand why motorcyclists act the way they do. Stuff which car drivers do all the time is super dangerous for motorcyclists and they just don't understand, because they don't care. Then they get upset at the behaviour they've caused... You see it a lot sadly, although some riders aren't considerate of others too.

I am a Texan and a rider. I have lived abroad for years now. As far as I can guess if I moved back home I would be the outlaw just for doing things thats normal around the world.
Everyone in every culture will hotrod and exploit their vehicle if they have the personality to do that.
So I have seen it in many places and with many vehicles, actually bicycles in most places.
The problem is the US, especially Texas, is super car centric.
If a bike does anything that the steel box cant do its wrong. They get mad and argue that it is against the law, I did as well.
Some do look at it as criminal, but for me and many, we were mostly just jealous we had to sit in traffic and they could slide by, like cutting in line.
Dumb stunts on the street are one thing, but for me and those i knew what we were mad at was the things we couldn't do

I'm also in Texas, and 90% of sportbikes here do dumb shit. They cut between cars with a foot to spare. They ride around on shoulders. And worst of all, they speed so fast, when you look to change lanes, they aren't there one second and there in your blind spot the next.

My parents tried to keep me away from motorcycles. At 16 (I live in Germany), I was not allowed to make the license. At 18, neither. Well, I took it for what it was. When I met my husband, he showed up for our second rendez-vous with his XT 350 (at least it looked like a motorcycle) in full gear. My parents were shocked (haha). I have to admit this made me love him even more. When we were married, he took me to driving school, and half a year later I bought my first motorcycle. Well, I always did what I really wanted. Next year our daughter will start (at 16 with a 125 cc). We explained to her that driving a motorcycle is just dangerous, and that she should always be aware of that. Otherwise, we are looking forward to her getting her license and first bike.

Hey Yam, love the channel. This is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart. I have always taken the approach of being an ambassador to the sport of motorcycling. I want people to view us as responsible citizens. We’re moms, dads, sons, daughters, brothers and sisters who love going from point A to point B, on two wheels. I have had a few close calls with wreck less individuals while I was in my car. Passing on the right, splitting lanes, (I live in NY, it’s illegal here) flying passed me, inches away, at triple digit speeds! Those behaviors do not instill us into the hearts and minds of Joe & Joan Lunch Bucket! Complying with the rules of the road, being courteous, being respectful. Setting the proper example that allows the four wheel public to see us in a much more positive light. One bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. Let’s all do our part while we’re out there doing what we love. Your behavior and example might just bring a new enthusiast into the sport. Thanks Yam! Great topic!

Immediately post WWII 1945 to 1950s in the UK motorcycles where the most affordable form of personal motorised transport for everyone. Cars were expensive. So lots of "normies" would have a bike, for transport. They still had a bit of an "oily" image.
However in the UK by the 1960s cars had become affordable for the masses. As I understand it for our USA cousins, cars became affordable somewhere in the 1950s.
By the mid 1960s in the UK anyone who really wanted a car quite often had one. The motorcycle became the preserve of those who like the element of danger. This coincided with the rise of the "teenager" and "youth rebellion". Marlon Brando didn't do bikes any favours with his "Wild One" film. In the UK we got the "cafe racers".
Bikes have always had a bit of a dangerous image, for obvious reasons, and all of us who ride must at least like the increase in danger, even if we're doing road legal speeds.
One of my car driver friends who I've known for decades, since we were 7 year olds at school, really tried to talk me out of getting a motorcycle. He hates motorcycles.
I think the current "normies" attitude to bikes, is well bikers are all a bit bonkers for wanting to do it. Motorcycle racers are looked on as clinically insane ( possibly a bit of truth to that ).
Some car drivers don't like bikers filtering.
Why does motorcycling have a bad image ? it really is a combination of factors.
Anyway, I don't care. I love riding my motorcycles !

I think poor knowledge is a big attribute to the hate against bikes. I've noticed, when a regular person meets a car guy, there's a concrete level of understanding. Like the parts, the safety appeal, and how cars are just more appealing to the Majority.
While I think talking about it like this is a fantastic way to show the rest of the world that we aren't what the majority thinks we are, I think we're always going to be at a disadvantage because there's always going to be those people that call us "people with a deathwish" or "adrenaline junkies" or any of that shit, Which is such a shame because I've always taken the time to inform "normies" about what bikes are really all about.

When I ride to work, people are excited for me. Dudes (and gal's) I don't even know are nice with comments like, "So jealous, that had to have been an awesome ride in" etc.
It is very easy not to be an asshole, it also helps that co-workers tell me I have this glow when I get to the office. It disappears only to reappear when I grab my gear to leave. I guess I just come across as just loving to ride, which helps sell the, "nice guy just enjoying life".
Edit: as a dad I get a kick out of kids in the car next to me giving me the rev sign. Quick easy rev and you've made the kids day with a finishing thumbs up to them. My son loves it too and likes it when timing works out and he and his mom (wife) are able to follow me the last couple miles to home.

A lady completely FLIPPED. OUT. on me yesterday because I lane split into the front of a red light. Now, I only do this in very safe situations. In this case, I wouldn't even call it lane splitting because she was the ONLY car at the light. I went around using the one turn lane and got in front of her with plentyyyy of room. In no way at all did I affect her safety, time getting to destination, I didn't do wheelies. But she honked, kept getting on my ass going 60!! (I'm on an r3, so she didn't have a hard time catching up when I wasn't accelerating.) We got to the next light and she was honking and yelling, going absolutely nuts. I just don't understand that kind of thing. Sometimes I think they should include the fact that a biker being in front is SAFER and doesn't affect you in ANY way at a red light. I did yell back one sentence, flipped her off. I should not have done that. I do kind of think I should have just sat there in front of her crazy ass while the next light turned green. But, no reaction is much more ideal. I guess I just don't get it, with people like that. There was no reason to be mad. Oh well
