For someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, riding has been the most amazing thing that's somehow allowed me to find a way to do something that fully engages me physically and also mentally in a way that let's me just shut off those parts of my brain I'm fighting and just be in a moment without my own mind yelling at me. My favorite moments have to be seeing little kids staring at you in awe and the smiles that they have after giving them a wave or rev, it's truly an incredible moment seeing that joy and wonder they have.

I agree I suffer from pretty bad anxiety, and hopping on a motorcycle made me not able to think about the things that trouble me and just blocked out all the stresses in life cause when you ride theres so many other things to think about like focusing on riding, feeling the wind, the smell, the sights. Riding a motorcycle was the best thing to ever happen to me. Deep but true

I'm 61 and I'm finally on two wheels, I've somehow made it this far after a couple battles with cancer as well as a few other deadly illnesses.
I retired last year and after getting my licenses and completing the Learning Curves Motorcycle Course this summer I have already put over 5,000 klms on my Mechanical Steed . Two days ago my throttle cable snapped on the hwy but I made it home to Hamilton down the backroads at 10 klms per hour . Lolol. My first ride was 55 years ago sitting behind my Uncle Dana when he picked me up from school , I had to wait 55 years to finally ride my own , it would take days for me to say why I love riding but I'm old and I don't have the time left to explain so get on a bike and feel the feelings yourself to understand.
Remember to always do your best to keep the dirty side down .

My favorite memory on my Vitpilen actually just happened a few weeks ago.
I was riding back home on a nice twisty back road with my dad on his bike in front of me, we came up out of the woods to a high ridge right as a sun beam shot out of a cloud right on us. Time seemed to stop in a way I had never experienced before. Just a glorious introspective moment where everything else in life melted away.

    • @reubendhull
      @reubendhull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hello fellow Vitpilen rider! The time stopping aspect is overwhelmingly beautiful about riding. I had an awesome experience like that during a "race" with a crop duster in the middle of nowhere. Riding 110mph down a flat country road and seeing the clouds part in just the right way changes you.

I got into riding at the age of 33, just randomly one day started looking at videos of motorcycling, might have been randomly recommended by TH-cam as well, don't remember exactly. I had just bought a house, got garage space and got my license. Motorcycling has helped me with my anxiety and depression as when I meet another rider, I do not have to be afraid to talk to them as I know there is at least one thing I can talk about with them.
Now 2 years later, I own 2 bikes, one is brand new (few months old) and another one is 2004 Yamaha TDM 900.
The TDM is a project bike, I'v taken the engine apart and fixed it up with very little mechanical experience with engines and learning more every day.
Best therapy I'v had, no money to buy drugs or alcohol anymore :)
Best memory was when I was still in motorcycle school (I live in Europe, so we have to attend schools) and the first time we where out in traffic and I got my first biker wave, I can not explain how awesome that felt. Now I wave to all the riders, especially new riders in school, and I don't really care if I get a wave back.

The biggest surprise I had in riding was probably seeing how big things actually are. Roads are massive, the buildings and big and there are so many nooks and crannies that you can go through. I go to school in San Francisco and that means lane splitting is legal. The second day I got my bike, I tried lane splitting. Traffic in SF is pretty packed, its just a sea of cars and everything felt so overwhelming, it was really scary. When I did it again the next day, it was completely different. You think that being on a small bike surrounded by big cars would make you feel weak. But I felt, and still feel, that on a bike I have the power to do anything, even if ai’m just riding a small ninja 300

Great video. I’ve ridden off and on for years. You get to a point where you’ve had so many close calls, felt that endorphin sweat flash, and yet keep the bike and yourself in complete control that you can stay calm in all kinds of emergencies. I work in a hospital now, and I can calmly razor focus on the emergency in front of me. Riding taught me to do that. There’s joy and focus. More people need to ride. It helps in surprising ways.

I relate to Spite's reasons for riding. Zipping around the city on the cheap. Buying bikes with specific purposes and uses in mind. Just got my motorcycle license and first bike in the last couple of months, and I plan to keep using this as a real mode of personal transport. If I'm only hauling myself around (no large stuff or other people or children or anything), then riding is perfect.
I've been a pedestrian and public transit user for ages, and I noticed that riding keeps me connected to the world in a familiar way when I'm stopped. I have my foot down on the asphalt to balance myself, and it's the same asphalt that I've been putting my feet on for decades as a pedestrian. And then it's time to roll again, and I'm on, like, the minimum requirements for a personal transport machine. An engine is driving a wheel, those are both attached to the same frame so that they can keep doing their work as everything rolls forward, and I'm on top of the frame, so I come along for the beautiful ride of physics. It's elegantly simple, in concept.
But actually, I first really fell in love with the powered ride specifically during the summer of 2020, during COVID-19 lockdowns. I decided one day to take a bit of a test ride on an urban shared electric moped scooter, since we have those here. It had a low top speed by design. But still, I felt the wind of the ride and saw how the road looked from this perspective and went, "I need one of these for myself, and I need enough power to go on roads with higher speed limits." And so, this year, in 2021, I did that. I mean, I got a loan of a few grand and bought an actual, not-speed-limited motorcycle, and not a scooter so small that I wouldn't even need the license. I achieved the concept of license to ride and owning a powered ride that can handle the faster roads.

It’s definitely my favorite way to relieve stress besides sleeping. I’ve always had a love for racing and going fast. But lately I have gotten away from the car world. I’ve matured a ton as a rider over the last 7 years and do stupid things way less. Now I have a 2021 MT-09 and it’s the fastest bike I’ve ever owned and while I do ring it out occasionally. I actually ride it at safe speeds 95% of the time. I’m a carve up a twisty road rider. That’s how I get the adrenaline rush out of my system. I love knowing that my $9k bike would just dog walk almost any car up to 100mph and I don’t have to wait in traffic either. It’s impossible for me to believe cars are better anymore. They can hit 200mph but on the road from point a to point b. Even a slow bike is faster than a Lamborghini

Yeah, I 100% agree with you, I'm slightly going away from cars too and these days I find myself way more into motorcycles, I'm starting to think that cars are a bit unnecessary and useless, in the real world the reason why someone needs a car is to get from point A to point B but in today's big cities, you can't go anywhere, that's where the bikes come in, the fastest way around a city by far, and as you said, most motorcycles can smoke most cars in acceleration, cars are for those who wanna show off and flex with their money, I don't give a crap about that, and for those who say that motorcycles are boring, we can leave them to dust while paying 10x less, most people get a car for status.

I don't enjoy riding roller coasters anymore, because everything you feel while riding one is amplified by 10 when you ride a motorcycle. There's something so raw about feeling as equally in control as you are out of control. Taming the wildfire of a motorcycle is one of the most fulfilling things i have ever experienced. It is an amazing stress reliever and there is something incredibly special about experiencing the raw world that you just can't get on a road trip in a car.

There is nothing in the world that can excribe the blisfulness of being on the open road on 2 wheels. Nothing can replace it or compare to it. If you want to feel life with no care or worry and just be free from your mind a life's issues the moment you get on one everything just goes. You just take in the fresh air the landscape, it's like your eyes truly open and see the world on a bike. Nothing will ever give you the feeling a bike can

Whitney's Minnesota story really resonates. I'm a long time biker but I convinced my gf to be pillion on a scooter in Mallorca in September and I took her down a mountain road (much to her initial reluctance) and she was blown away by the temperature differences, the views and the smell of the pines. She's planning to get a motorbike licence now!
