I just can’t understand how in 2021 we don’t have a virtually flawless automatic litter box...
I’m talking like 4.5 stars out of 5, from thousands of reviews.

Mostly the vocal minority post (bad) reviews and the 100's of 1000's of happy people don't. That skews product ratings. Take bad results with a grain of salt.

"I’m talking like 4.5 stars out of 5, from hundreds or thousands of reviews." That is literally the Litter Robot. Hands down best. Sure there's one or two design changes I'd like to see sure but overall way worth it.

Thanks for this video. I'll be receiving a Litter Robot soon. My 80yr old mother struggles everyday with 2 litter boxes. I just hate seeing her have to mess with the struggle every day. So I made the decision to buy her a automated litter box. I've been doing a lot of research for the past several months and it seems like the Litter Robot is best choice for our house. She's got 4 cats and I have one that stays with me in my room. Only one other comes to use my litter box on occasion. So I'm hoping this will help her out and we can get them all(except mine) to use the Litter Robot. She doesn't know that I ordered her one. It's her early Mothers Day present.

How did it go with your mom? My mom is 80 too, and I’m thinking of getting her a litter robot for the same reasons. I’d get her a Cat Genie as I have, but I know it would be too high tech for her.

    • @rogerenyart2066

@@jenniferbrown7446 , we are loving it. It took our cats 🐈 time to adjust naturally, but once we got them all adjusted, it's been very beneficial to mom. No more bending over every single day for her to scoop poop. It is time tho for us to clean the box out. We(me actually 🤣) are gonna take it to the local car wash and give it a good cleaning. We have also saved a tone of $$ on litter as well. This has been well worth the money I've spent.

I appreciate this video so much! It truly feels like an unbiased and genuine review on each of these options. I ultimately chose the Litter Robot. It works great but definitely has a couple of small flaws: the waste bin doesn't hold much. I have 3 cats and have to empty the tray daily --still way better than scooping everyday though! And my timer is set for 7 min to clean after use but sometimes the wet clumps stick to the roof as it rotates. Lastly, it's a tight squeeze for my mid size cat and my larger cat (14lb) won't use it because it's too small for him. Sadly returning for that reason and it costs $60 for the shipping label, not including the cost of a box large enough. So take my advise and KEEP THE ORIGINAL BOX during the 90 day return period.

Thank you for your thorough review of these products. Great video, as someone who’s really lost on what an “automatic litter box” would actually do for our house, it’s really great to watch all of them compared together.

Just an FYI I owned the new CatGenie AI for 5 months before replacing it with a normal litter box. It was great at first for the first month, however after it's return period had elapsed it started having issues. The biggest ones being related to unreliable cleaning. The worst is that several times it would just stop in the middle of a cleaning leaving dirty water in the bowl and it's "start where it left off" feature is convoluted and doesn't work. You end up having to manually remove the water and granuals clean it manually put it back together and do a full reset. This happened 3 times in the last 4 months I had it setup.
Next issue is that it doesn't so a very good job grinding the poop and it will cause it to clog which then again causes dirty water build up and the same as previous solution to dismantle and clean manually.
Contacting their support turned out to be worthless they never offered to replace and when I asked it was not a thing they do.
Then there is the crappy app. It only has basic functionality and there is a lot you still have to do via the very few buttons on the litter box. All of these convoluted features could just be in the app under a maintenance or advance area. Nope.
This is a horrible device maybe the previous gen was better but this was the new one that claimed all these improvements over the previous.
So either I got a defective one that they refused to replace so will never know for sure if this is normal and common. Since support was crap I would have to assume yes.
Avoid this one... And in my experience with automatic cat litter boxes they are all flawed in someway that makes them more work that they should be and just to use a normal one.
I've had 4 different auto cleaning ones over the last decade and they all eventually disappointed me. However the CatGenie was the fastest to disappoint in like 45 days as most took at least a year before getting there.
I don't plan to ever fall for this again. Manual cleaning boxes just never fail.

Ive had the Cat Genie A.I. version for about a year, and I love, love, love it. I had the older generation model for 4 years before this one. My only con is that when you have to do a deep clean, it really is a pain, but if you’re good about running the maintenance cartridge every other month, I’ve been able to go as long as 18 months before having to do a complete disassembled cleaning. However, I will happily put up with that, for no cat smell in my house, never buying or handling litter, and knowing I’m not adding to the environmental impact of litter. The granules are biodegradable (not plastic) and occasionally I add some new granules to the unit. Never have to change them out. I will say, this really has to be set up in a laundry room. The drain there is your output. In a bathroom, you’d still be in charge of actually flushing what the Cat Genie deposits in your toilet. My only annoyance is that if my cat drags a string into the box, it will get wound around the impeller (the poo crusher) and impede performance. Then I wear a rubber glove, get my scissors, and stick my hand in there to cut the strings away from the impeller rod. Maybe this happens 4 times a year. So, whatevs. Love this machine. Won’t own a cat without it. And personally when I did need to call customer service when I lost a little part, they were incredibly nice and friendly. I like supporting a company that is basically a mom and pop shop located in Pennsylvania.

I have had the Litter Robot 3 for around 5-6 years, couldn't find the original invoice, and have absolutely loved it. I have needed to have the sensors for the waste drawer replaced twice, once under warranty and the second time I ordered the part online and swapped it out myself. I believe LR updated the design of the sensor the second time around, from what I saw when I installed it, and the general longevity of the part since. I appreciate its reliability, and repairability, and the fact that I can dismantle it entirely and clean it with a garden hose when it needs it.

I bought the litter robot 3, it's expensive yes, but some sites have payments. I haven't scooped since, no smell, change the bag every sun and thursday, we buy the small store brand scented waist basket bags, I keep it next to a cracked window, and we've never smelled a thing, it does not come with the walk up ramp, but it comes with paw sand catcher at the entrance, I threw down 2 large litter catch mats from Walmart. We are in love with this thing. It was well worth it, before it use to be a fight who was going to scoop the poop, I'd always gag over the strong ammonia smell.

My biggest complaint about the litter robot is that the little capacity is not substantial enough. When I shop around for an automatic litter Box I chose one based off of how long it lasted for 2 cats. The little robot would last maybe 3 days before running out of litter. My goal was to have a litter box that I could rely on if I had to travel.

I've owned both the Petsafe Simply Clean and a Little Robot. Both were 1st generation litter boxes. I ran into the same issue with the Litter Robot not sensing my 9-10 lb cat until it stopped sensing her completely. For this I attached a wifi outlet to the power plug and (whenever I was away for a few days) would turn it off and then back on. This would activate the box to complete one cycle. Otherwise I would just manually press the cycle button when I got home. However, eventually it stopped sensing her completely and it became more of an issue to remember to manually cycle her box 4 times a day. The other issue I had was my larger 20 pound Maine Coon didn't like it because it wasn't enough room for her to move around in. So I had to have a normal litter box for her. Otherwise the other cat loved it. She would jump inside it just to set it off and watch it rotate.
I actually liked the Petsafe Simply Clean but don't think it would work with my 20 lb cat. There was a weight limit on it back then and it would also be too small for her. But I liked that I could use regular Walmart Plastic bags instead of specialty bags for her waste, and it also did a great job at cleaning without creating dust. And it rotated so slow that it never started my cat.
Which reminds me of another reason why I didn't like the Litter Robot... it got dust all over the inside - top and sides, which I felt was unsanitary and decided to clean it often. I mean all those rotating litter boxes are practically like throwing poop inside of a clothes dryer, letting it cover the entire inside in germs, and calling it clean just because the large chunks of poop are gone.

    • @jcepri
      @jcepri ปีที่แล้ว

I don't care what anybody says. The litter robot is WORTH every penny. You literally save so much money on litter. It tracks their toilet habits so if it increases a lot then it can catch a UTI before it turns into kidney failure. (Cats are very prone to kidney failure. My older cat died of it and so did my very good friends cat.)

I have a PetSafe Scoop Free and a CatGenie. We originally had the CatGenie in a back bathroom we weren't using, but it is now our main bathroom after being redone so when we redid that, we also moved the laundry to another room and had it plumbed with an extra spot for the water from the litter tank to be removed. I absolutely LOVE it. All my cats are healthy and there is no smell, except when it occasionally misses a smaller piece. I was using the Scoop Free before we got the CatGenie and had to go back to it for one cat who refuses to go into the part of the house where the CatGenie is. So I've got them both running. The ScoopFree gets litter stuck in the rails and errors out constantly. I have to go in and jiggle the box and reset it. We even went to far as to dismantle it, blow the rails out and put a little silicone on the start of it and it worked for a solid month before starting to error out again. I have to change it once a week, because while the other cats like the Cat Genie and use it regularly, I think they like the ScoopFree better. So I have three cats using it. If I could train the one cat to to go the back of the house and use the CatGenie, I'd be done with the ScoopFree because it has gotten hugely expensive to switch out litter boxes once a week. In pricing the crystals to buy separately and use the reusable plastic tray, I can't find a savings. Plus, there would be all that urine sitting on the bottom of the plastic tray that would have to be cleaned manually. My choice is the CatGenie, if you have the plumbing available. Been running great for 6 years now. I buy extra litter maybe once a year and chemicals maybe twice a year. Thank you for the great review. It helped with my decision to stay with what I have for now.

When I was younger and the litter made first came out it was great especially for travel with five cats of course we had two of them. However I cannot spend or give another dime to that company I just cannot do it I am blown away at the prices of automatic cleaning litter boxes at this stage of the game 20 years later. I'm just absolutely floored but I'm glad to be educated on this because now that I'm disabled I have got to go back to an automatic litter box of some kind to be fair to my cats. Sadly it just will not be the litter made company I wish I could afford the $650 automatic one I just cannot. Firstly let me say I am not a cat person but have agreed to care for my daughter's 2 Sphynx cats while she is pregnant and I am here because between the 2 of them I am cleaning their tray about 6 times a day and a complete clean and litter change every 2-3 days even though its big and deep enough for a large dog, the obvious smell is taking its toll on me and I desperately need to resolve this issue. I grew up with outdoor cats and had no idea these tiny little bundles of joy could produce so much waste, I am still not sure what system to get but do appreciate all of these reviews

Thanks for the in depth reviews! I’m going to invest in the litter robot once my baby is a little heavier (to make sure she will activate it). It’s really enticing because if I go out of town for a couple days and have someone babysitting my kitten they won’t have to scoop and my girl will still have a clean bed of litter! Thanks for the review!
I've had the PetSafe Scoop Free for six years, and, mechanically, it's worked great. No problems, no issues, and I'm still using the same one. The only problem is my cat is bigger so it doesn't work as well. When my wife and I were dating, her roommate had one of these, and that's why I bought one. Their cat was a typical small, 5lbs cat and it worked great and they could get about 4-5 weeks out of it. Before my cat had a growth spurt, it was working great and no problems or issues and I could get a solid month out of it without having to do anything to it! But my cat had a growth spurt, and her body now measures 16 inches, her tail 11 inches and she weighs about 15lbs.
The problem I have with it is that, bless her heart, my cat is not smart enough to shuffle the granules and not that purple plastic entry ramp. When she does her business, she will shuffle that and not the granules, meaning the granules don't get shuffle around; if she has a pee, it's no problem, but if she poops, boy, you smell it. Also, what happens is you'll end up with a middle area where the litter gets consistently saturated with urine and the back part has about a 4-5 inch area of pristine litter; this becomes a problem (see below). Also, my cat's poop will fill up the little storage area in the front kind of fast. If I don't do anything, I'll have to change the litter box out when the counter gets into the 40 range (approximately two weeks). What I've been doing is putting on some gloves and putting the cat poop into a bag and throwing it away and manually mixing the litter together to avoid this issue. Doing this works okay and I can get the counter to the 60-70 range before I have to change the whole box out at the 3-3.5 week mark; of note, the litter box is in a low humidity area, as the box recommends. Also, the box is only cardboard so when I first noticed this, the urine had gone through the box to the floor and this is even with one of those litter catcher mats underneath it! I always thought those things were pee proof, but at least not the one I bought! No doubt this happened because the litter in that area was not being mixed and it became oversaturated. I haven't had this issue since I started doing what I said above, but just to be safe, I keep a few flattened cardboard boxes underneath the litter catcher mat!
I can only comment on my experience, but if you have one cat, who's small to average sized, I think this is definitely the way to go. If you have a larger cat, like me, you might want to consider that rotating one she was talking about. I am, but the cost seems a little high for me considering what I have now is not awful and is serviceable; also, she mentioned it might not be good for big cats. Just know that if you have a larger cat you may have to change out the trays at shorter intervals and/or do some things to prolong the tray's life like what I mentioned above.
I hope this helps and thanks again for your reviews!
PS: if anyone is wondering if a self-cleaning litter both is worth it...it definitely is! There are tons of reasons but the biggest one is that I don't have to worry about asking anyone to cat sit for us! We have an automatic litter box and an automatic feeder ($50) and water fountain ($50) and the only thing we ask the person to do is just hang out with our cat so she doesn't get stir crazy and check the water level, although it'll hold enough water for a cat for about 7-10 days

Thanks Charlie for your detailed info, and those helpful tips! You mentioned the main reason we need an auto litter box, which is because we no longer have a cat sitter. Do you have the older or latest technology PetSafe Scoop Free? Can you please share the brand of auto feeder and fountain you use? Thanks again for your time! Marie

    • @charliep5139
      @charliep5139 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mariewhitman8758 I'm not sure the model of PetSafe Scoop Free, but I bought it new back in 2015. As an update, once I took off purple canopy, my cat is shuffling around the litter waaay better, so I'd recommend that for people to not shell out the extra money for the canopy, especially if you have a larger cat!
The electric feeder I bought back in 2015, too, from Amazon, but it looks like they don't have it anymore. It is the Pyrus Automatic Feeder Electric Pet Dry Food Container with LCD Display Large Automatic Feeder for Dogs & Cats. It only has like 3.5 stars, but it has worked great for me! I feed my cat one serving 2-3 times per day depending on the size of the dry cat food and brand. The only gripe I have about the feeder, which may not be unique to this feeder, but if I buy food pellets that are small, like the Blue Buffalo fit and healthy, my cat can stick her paw into the dispenser outlet and is able to steadily get pellets out; I fixed this by gorilla taping a piece of cardboard across the outlet that was big enough to let out the food, but she cant stick her paw in anymore.
As for her fountain, I have a Petsafe Sedona fountain; this is also great to get your cat to drink more water! Also, at least for me, she don't use plain tap water; try and use filtered water from the fridge or a brita or something like that. I'm sure it has to do with the cholorine, etc in tap water.
If you fill the fountain up all the way, it'll last longer than a week. In terms of maintenance, I try and keep the water level to about half an inch below the brim. Also, I dump out the water every week and put in fresh water and twice a month, I'll take apart all the pieces, including the motor and toothbrush it all down with water and dawn soap because this yucky biofilm will start to form on all the stuff, which if you've washed your cat's water dish, you'll know what I'm talking about! Also, I replace that little white, sponge filter once a month ($6 for two on amazon). A tip is that I thought the motor had broken because it wasn't spinning, which I thought, "well it lasted 5 years so that makes sense" so I bought a new one and that worked, but then I actually read the instructions that came with the new one, and I realized that you need to open up the motor and take out the magnetic impeller blade and clean that and the magnet, too. It's not hard to unstick the magnet, but the magnet is strong enough that the impeller won't just fall out if you put it upside down. Once I did that, the old one started working fine! So it went 5 years without me cleaning that part!
Sorry for the long post and hope all that helps!

I was really excited about trying out a litter bot, but you’ve definitely changed my mind. I think I’ll modify a small, raised cabinet and add a little ramp so it can be reachable for both myself and cats, and just use a standard litter box. Can’t think of a better way to do it. I got the reusable plastic bottom for it and it doesnt play well with the rake and was slowly damaging the unit every time it ran. I found you can just buy a large bag of regular crystal litter for the same price as one tray, and you can reuse the scoop free branded trays 2-3 times using bagged crystal litter as a refill. Not a permanent reusable solution, but definitely cuts litter costs by about half.

@@emmar9594 lol, my litter maid just broke 2 days ago. It had a CATastrophic failure and just destroyed itself. My cats mega poops 💩 were just too much for it to handle so I had to toss the whole thing in the trash because you can’t get parts for it. But to answer your question I was most recently using the clump and seal slide litter not just the clump and seal, it has to be slide as well. When I had a previous generation litter maid with another cat I had years ago there was another litter that I used and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out what it was but I remember it had what I like to call “flavor crystals 😂” in it. I’m sure it was either tidy cats or arm and hammer but I could not find the exact right one when I bought this current littermaid. The current littermaid just turned out to be shit. Besides it breaking the biggest design flaw in it’s operation from what I can tell is that the rake was changed to flexible plastic fins instead of a metal rake. The shit sticks to it, gets wedged in between the fins and stays stuck on it pretty good. If it were possible to switch the fin piece out for the metal rake piece I guarantee it would work 10 times better. I actually looked online to see if it was possible or if I could buy just the metal rake piece and modify it myself but I couldn’t find anything. Good luck with yours. Also I noticed never buy the single cat version of the littermaid, it’s just too small for a regular sized cat, always go for the multi-cat version. If they fixed the design flaws with the current version then I’d buy it again but as of right now I’d try to find the older version with the metal rake but only the multi-cat version. I’ve seen the single but I can’t find the multi.

Just my 2 cents for anyone considering: I spent the money on the litter robot. It ended up in the dumpster, the walls are this rubbery material so poop would get stuck to them and dry on, hard to clean. When I would put new litter in it half of the new litter would fall through to the tray on the first use. Plus it's so big if you're in an apartment without a big enough space for it than that sucks
