My first impressions of this song were a cross between Dr. Seuss meets Tim Burton. Not sure why...the imagery inspired? Love the lyrics, music, fun, joy and chair dancing every time I hear it play. You’ve been gone too long Barry! Welcome back!!! More please!

You’re nearly right. Some of the lyrics are excerpted from Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carroll who (of course) wrote Alice in Wonderland.

There are loads of references to children's literature, poems tv programmes, films etc. Heffalumps are, I think, from the muppets , could be wrong , muddy dump from Stig of the Dump, borogroves and slithy toves are from Jabberwocky. Those are only a few. This is such a feel good song , makes me happy and I wheeze along to every time I hear it. Lol.
Heffalumps are Winnie the Pooh. 🤗
There are also some phrases from the poem The Jabberwocky in this song.

This was probably the first song save for Bohemian Rhapsody where I heard the original first! The original from Cosmo Sheldrake feels like a fey tries to lure you into the forest, this one feels like you got ambushed by sirens... the line 'shut your ears when sirens sing" feels ironic, you're the sirens pentatonix!! You're the problem here!

I'll always love this one, not only because its great work, but because it was clearly a breakthrough for Kirstie. It's not only the first time she's dressed overtly sexy in a video, but her mannerisms to camera are commanding. This is definitely HER video, even with some real boss Mitch moments.

Hi, Barry. I’m from the U.S. and have been enjoying your TH-cam channel and your lovely reactions for a year now. My husband and I hope to visit Ireland for our first time (once COVID ever settles down) since we both have some Irish in our lineage. Where about in Ireland are you? I’m so glad you enjoy and appreciate Pentatonix. I discovered them about a year ago as well and I’m a full-fledged Pentaholic. I don’t know if you’ve ever listened to their version of “My Favorite Things”. If not, I’d love to see your reaction. I just saw the video myself today, and I love their spin on it. A slightly darker, almost “steampunk” vibe. They made an old song feel new and modern, as always. I find that I prefer most of their covers to the originals.

I missed that the Pentatonix mentioned that this song is by Cosmo Sheldrake. This guy is absolutely underrated. He is what I called a music fuddler, he tries to bring some new stuff and noises in to music. Love it. The version by the Pentatonix is great too by the way, but I love the original most.

I Always think Wonderland/Jabberwocky as it mentions Borogroves & Slithy Toves(All mimsy were the borogoves//Twas brillig, and the slithy toves) plus the mentions of Time.
This one always struck me as the epitome of Diana Wynne Jones' Chrestomanci Chronicles, where all worlds exist on a continuum from science-based mundane to pure faerie magic and you can step between them if you have the skills/talent. So Hundred Acre Wood, Neverland, Sherwood Forest, Halloween Town, Prydain, Narnia, Wonderland, and Ancient Greece could all be visited in the same day (think I caught all of these references in the song, but might be stretching/misnaming some). My first thought hearing it was, "Do you want the Wild Hunt? 'Cause that's how you call the Wild Hunt!"

Oh lovely! Definitely one of my favorites, and such an underrated song from Cosmo Sheldrake. I can definitely see the Christmas theme you got from it. However, I always confused this song with the Winnie the Pooh "Hefalump" story and cannot separate the two within my mind. It has that free spirited childlike joy within its sound. Loved this and your reaction!

A fun review of one of my favourite Pentatonix songs.
Way, way back in 1993 the movie; "The nightmare before Christmas", was released. A chap by the name of Cosmo Sheldrake wrote a signature piece for it, which PTX actually covered, "Making Christmas" (Halloween Town takes over Christmas..., once, poorly.). There was a sequel in the works that was canceled, instead it went straight into Graphic Novel format. Cosmo had written a song for that one too... "Come Along". PTX just had to cover this as well. You should check out their cover of "Making Christmas", they switch between "Bright, Happy, sparkly" Christmas and "Dark, spooky, gloomy" Halloween-mas.

Given that Cosmo was born in 1989, I think you've confused him with someone else. As someone else commented a few minutes ago, Danny Elfman was the composer of all the music in "Nightmare Before Christmas." (And PTX cover of Making Christmas is in my top 20 pieces of music, which is a free-floating list which is at this time almost entirely PTX, Superfruit and Todrick Hall.)

Hi Barry! I don't want to be the reason you have an "episode"!!! Lol! So I won't tell you it's not a Christmas song! But that wouldn't have kept Ptx from putting it on a Christmas album! Still, they did not. As far as I can tell, the only album this is on is the Japan 5th Anniversary Greatest Hits album that was only released in Japan. I have it because I saw it on Ebay from a Japanese seller! It's a wonderful album, with other songs on it that are not on any of their other albums. (Shallow, Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Pretender & Waving through a Window. 23 songs in all. Regardless, I love this song! They performed it on their 2019 world tour. The stage performance was really clever, creative snd fun!!! Great reaction Barry!! Love you!!! XO 💜

This is such a fun video, and they've done a fantabulous job with this song. I went hunting for the original to see how the creator of the song arranged it and .... well, you know how a popular comment is that Pentatonix "upgrades" the songs they cover? Oh, man. The original is downright grim, which is so weird, when you compare it to the tenor of the lyrics, which are extremely whimsical. But Cosmo's version starts with a VERY lengthy (40 seconds) instrumental beginning, heavy on discords and percussion. It sounded like something Cecil B. DeMille would have crafted for an epic costume drama. Then all that just goes away and Cosmo starts singing (at about half the speed of PTX version). It's just ... dour.
Frankly, I can't even conceive of the leaps of the imagination that would have PTX decide to cover it - and in such a happy, cheerful way. The contrast is just bizarre.
If you look through the comments on the PTX cover, you'll find that Cosmo posted a "thank you" for covering his song.
I only know the original from the small bit played during an iPhone commercial.
@@kathyastrom1315 I saw the commercial. It's ... weird. But so is the song, so that's cool. :) But if you're at all curious, just look for "Come Along Cosmo" and then sit in bewilderment for a few minutes.
I do think he's got a real talent for lyrics, and the tune is pleasing. I just found myself wondering if "indie" meant "be weird."
Thank you for this review. I’ve long since learned that there is ABSOLUTELY NO POINT in listening to the original (if I don’t already know it). PTX make the song far superior and it’s just depressing to listen to the original.
Case in point: Gold by Kiarra! I was absolutely gobsmaked at how ‘wrong’ it sounded in comparison to PTX’s laidback but perfectly delivered version. I don’t do it anymore. 😏
In a similar vein. I actually thought of their ‘I Just Called To Say I Love You’ as a cover. A good cover. Just like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was. When they cover the classics they cover them really well. When they cover others, it’s just a perfect upgrade.

@@caroleceres Thanks! Yeah, I went looking for "Gold," too, as I'd never heard it before. It didn't bother me as much as "Come Along" did, but yes, the 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 of the song is way different. But with that one, most of the attention belongs to Mitch's incredible control of his voice.

Yes, it's so pretty it does sound almost like a Christmas song with the style & happy feel. I don't remember what album they put it on, though.
I still keep wondering what it's from, because the lyrics are all about an island getaway & make references to fantasy stories such as Winnie the Pooh (heffalumps is what they called elephants), Alice in Wonderland, Homer's Oddysey (& others) with the reference to needing to close your ears & tie yourself up because of sirens. A few other lines sound familiar too but not sure where from, maybe Peter Pan? (It's been over 40 years since I read that, cause I was about 9 I think.😄) This is definitely one of those that I want an explanation of the lyrics.

Surprise, I bet you thought I was done for the night? HA, nope! Well, doesn’t this one have everything and then some? I am back harping on about Matt for 5 hours (okay 30 seconds) but I still say he has settled in and has just gotten better and better. He and Kevin just drive the songs along, I mean honestly I LOVE them both. Kirsten and her fast vibrato cuts through the rest of them and it is SO great! You can only imagine since Terri loves Freddie Mercury how much she would love a fast vibrato? YES! The other 2 were okay, just joking y’all don’t come for me!! We tend to go on and on about Mitch and Scott because they are that great so I thought I would shine my tiny Terri spotlight on the other three for a comment. Fantastical! ❤️
