Is virtual reality worth the hype?

  • Can virtual reality actually make it to Ready Player One levels? Right now, it has a few things that hold it back from becoming a mainstream phenomenon. To me, it has many cool features to offer but more than often it seems as though many users simply enjoy the novelty of it (like trying it out at a friends house) rather than actually buying VR for themselves at home. I go over my reasons in this video! Like and subscribe if you like content like this :]

    the problem with a niche market is its often too limited for budgets and expanded innovation from the hardware side, often the demand encourages the innovation

    valve is constantly innovating as well as the vr community, theres some dude making $60 haptic feedback vr gloves. and valve is constantly improving on their original valve index, the patents prove it all, I feel eventually once more games release and VR is a stable branch of gaming and can promise gamedevelopers money and not just a chance, thats when it will become mainstream

      Nothing is undeniable. It's a matter of preference. Xbox, PS or Nintendo. Now add VR as a fourth option. It's a news media fault to claim it's going to be for everyone. I play professional eSports at a master level and thoroughly enjoy many VR titles. I've put in over 4000 hrs in VR so far in 3 years. You can't deny that it wasn't fun doing that, can you?

    I got my first VR headset the other day, a Pico 4 to use in Microsoft Flight Simulator, but it became apparent it had a wavy lense in the right eye and text would look wavy as I turned my head so it is being returned. But I did get to try it out and use it for a few hours, and it is just so fiddly to get it up and running due to it being a standalone headset. Then there's the power needed. I have a i7-13700k and a RTX 4090 and the amount of heat that came out of my computer into my room the other day while I was playing Microsoft Flight Simulator with it was insane. Maybe a dedicated VR headset would be less demanding and produce less heat, I don't know, but I think we are a long way away from VR being widely adopted. I think it is overrated. The Pico 4 has generally been said to have one of the higher resolutions available on a VR headset, but you can still see the pixels (screendoor effect) and the image is somewhat fuzzy and the colours are muted and dull and the field of view is not great even though this is one of the better headsets for it. I take the VR headset off and right in front of me is my Samsung mini-LED TV which is bright with vibrant colours and no screendoor effect and I just wonder what the point in this headset really is. There's also not that many different models available due to the niche market that VR still is. Maybe when Apple drops it's ridiculously priced headset next year, it might spark an interest in the technology and it may improve, but right now, for the average person, I think they will be disappointed.

    You bring up valid points and I'd like to provide a rebuttal:
    VR is not expensive. I put together my own PC for 500 bucks. Learned a skill and have put about 3k hours in 2 yrs.
    Motion sickness is a thing but an easy hurdle to get over if you don't try to push past it. At the earliest sign stop. It starts at 5 to 10 mins, then 30 then 60 mins. Next thing you know you're too immersed to feel it at all.
    There are games. Everyone finds their genre and VR has something for everyone. People who like grinding and role playing will like a game like Saints and Sinners. FPS has Onward and Pavlov. There are other and the multiplayer community is large (in the thousands).
    Yes devs are limited by the number of players, however, the number of VR players is the same if not more than Xbox or PlayStation individually. "Pancake" console owners are divided. VR gamers are combined and cross play.

    • @bokey_1da
      @bokey_1da  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is great. Thanks for this! So with motion sickness you just inch your way until you manage to feel super into it? I think a huge issue is many people genuinely do enjoy the experience at first and can't help but overload when they first get into it and that probably turns them off a bit by overstaying their welcome (initially at least). For real gamers I'm sure they'll stick with it regardless and see its potential no doubt, especially if they're willing to spend the money anyways, but for just the casual person they may just get turned off right away.
      I think there's also a ton of potential with just making really cool social spaces in VR. After playing Hogwarts Legacy, it would be sweet to just roam around a virtual Hogwarts and talk with students, or anything like that really. I appreciate the thorough comment!!

      Idk I tried half life alyx on valve vr and it was much much less immersive than my home theater system with oled hdr and real surround sound. Everything was blurry compared to 4k screen. 3d is only redeeming quality of vr

    I own a quest 2. I used it for a couple months and never picked it back up. 90% of games have terrible graphics Half Life being one of the only that looks good. The connection to the PC is so cumbersome and inconsistent. It physically hurts your eyes and head after only a short time of play even after getting over the initial motion sickness. Unless they release a light weight pair of goggles and really increased graphics I don't plan on returning to vr
