I bought my FIRST VR headset 1 Year ago, WAS IT WORTH IT

  • I’m one of those people who have wanted to get into VR ever since learning about it YEARS ago. However I never did because of one reason or another. I didn’t think the technology was there yet, there were no good games or I was afraid I just get motion sick. Well one year ago I decided it was time to do it so I decided the valve index was the headset for me. Today we talk about my experience with the head set and was VR worth it. Also over this year I have had many different people try my headset and we will talk about there experience with motion sickness. Should you finally pull the trigger on a VR system.

    Please upvote the message for anyone who might want to jump into VR
    This is a disclaimer
    Do not force your way through motion sickness.
    That makes it last longer and become more intense.
    It creates a disposition for feeling motion sickness due to a nocebo effect.
    What you want to do is to play, and take off the headset the moment you feel even a bit queazy, no exception.
    Forget about being a macho, you'll regret it.
    Once you feel better, after maybe an hour, jump back in.
    Rince & repeat. You'll last longer and longer without getting queazy, until eventually you can stay in VR for an entire day, at which point it's less than a non-issue.

    • @Oblithian
      @Oblithian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I can concur, the effect seems to be very similar to playing certain old games for a long time. Like SW Dark Forces. I think it's the eye strain not the motion, though in VR you have eye strain and disorientation. (I suddenly want to play VR portal).

    I would suggest ThrillSeeker's advice for VR, my favorite being:
    1. mount a pulley system in your room so that the HMD cable is above you instead of under your feet.
    2. get a circular 1m (3 feet) diameter rug instead of the chaperone thing to get a better hold of your play area.

    BTW quest 2 has no screen door effect... at least not noticeable to me and when I used my brothers rift s there was a significant screen door effect.... so I mean the index is the best for many many reasons but if you know someone with a Quest 2 check it out see how it feels for you or if you just have $300 for a second HMD but with the amount of filament you go through idk.... lol anyway I have seen VR enthusiast reviews but seeing a comparison from an average VR user like you would be really cool for a future video. ;)

    I've had the OG rift, rift S, and currently have an index with KatVR loco S motion sensors. Most of my gaming time is beatsaber, but I do really enjoy the immersion that VR brings to other games which makes it that much more enjoyable than normal gaming. The biggest downfall of VR for me is that it's hard to get friends into it due to floor space restrictions and hardware requirements - the quest has been helpful in at least getting wife/girlfriend approval for some by not having cables everywhere.

    I got my first VR setup a little over a year ago just for iRacing and had never tried VR before that either. I've never been sea sick and that didn't even cross my mind of being an issue. The first time I used it I immediately felt sick to my stomach and had a headache for the rest of the night. I waited over a week to try it again but it wasn't too bad the second time and I played for about 45 minutes. It's been totally fine since then. I went with the Oculus Rift 2 because I wasn't too sure how often I would use it, which turns out not often at all. I do however love using it and 7.1 surround headphones in the Big Screen app to watch movies and youtube in my own 'theater." I think that alone makes it worth it.

    Just taken my first leap into VR with a quest 2 a few days ago, I'd used my friend's OG rift and index before and was very impressed with the index, but last week I managed to snag a 128gb quest 2 for £200 (well, £250 with a £50 amazon voucher).
    Really impressed so far. There's definitely room for improvement when it comes to comfort, but I can't fault it for the price. I wish it had the index's FOV, but again, price. Wireless PCVR on the other hand is a pretty liberating experience. My friend has her index set up with cable pulleys, which is better than tripping over the cable, but you still have to worry about accidentally hanging yourself if you turn around too much, which is a bit of an immersion breaker to say the least. The freedom of movement with airlink is really nice.

    • @Dimondminer11
      @Dimondminer11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but with the quest 2 you should know that you can get the "pro" headstrap which gives you extra battery for headless mode and allows the cable going to your pc to be routed better... not to mention it is more comfortable. That is the next upgrade I'm getting though is the headstrap as the one it comes with is garbagio.

    • @LyK0sa
      @LyK0sa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dimondminer11 yeah, I guess by room for improvement I meant that there are options available. The official elite strap isn't usually recommended due to durability issues, but I think a lot of the third party straps don't have that issue. I'm currently using one of those D strap things that attaches to the back of the stock strap, it works pretty well once you've got it adjusted properly, even better with a power bank attached to the back to act as a counterweight.

    If you calculate your viewing angle of your monitor and then compare it to VR, you'll find that the pixels per degree (PPD) in your field of vision can be less than half of a monitor. That's why when I got the Reverb G2, I actually expected to have very low resolution. But I was surprised. Due to the lack of screendoor effect, the resolution and level of detail actually felt higher than I expected. Yes, it's not as sharp as a monitor, and you can see shimmering in object edges, but in a way the resolution feels "infinite". And reading even small text is no problem.

  • @Tapemaster21

    Your part about screen door is just you seeing the pixel layout and not the screen door effect. You should try an HTC Vive if you ever get the chance, it's screen door is horrid and completely different than just pixels being laid out in a grid. SDE is talking about the black lines that show up on OG OLED pixel layouts with loads of black inbetween the pixels.

      Its more about Pixel Density than actual resolution. Because you are looking at the screen through a lens that acts basically as a magnifying glass SO no matter how high the res is from a standard viewing distance you will see in between the pixels which is what creates the screen door effect. If you put your face up to a 4k or higher res TV you can sort of see the pixels then you add magnification and yeah its hard not to focus on it... But anyway we will be seeing CHEAP headsets that will advertise High Res displays soon enough so be mindful of what's a marketing ploy and what's legit advances in technology.

    • @WDMurphy
      @WDMurphy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ethanvalentine4299 Yeah I know, when I said resolution I specifically mentioned the G2 as a reference as such meaning its screen size also.
      It is somewhat common to say resolution and others (hopefully understand) I do have an Associates Degree in Electronics.
      But yes we should be using "ppi density" but no one does, probably because you also would need to know the screen size and FOV (vertical and horizontal) for any comparably. So the resolution is just the most relatable to people. FOV is also really subjective to the individual.
      So yes min g2 res BUT I would like a higher FOV also meaning the res to stay at ≈ the same ppi it would need to have a higher resolution.
      Thanx the info might help someone.
      With so many different IPDs and head shapes and glasses/not distance from the screen, not sure there will ever be a "standard" way to compare HMDs. We will always have companies fudging the numbers, we see that with FOV now.

    For me, I have quite a bit of motion sickness issues so I can't use a mobile device (phone, Switch, etc) in the car. I had issues with the first gen 3DS unless I looked at the screen a certain way and held the 3DS perfectly still which was impossible. Thankfully the 2nd gen 3DS "NEW 3DS" fixed that issue. I also can't look at first person view videos or selfie stick videos either. Even certain scenes on TV give me issues and I have to look away or close my eyes. In video games, if I look down from a significant height I get nauseous. I know it's just an image but it still affects me. My only other concern is not being able to see the real world and potentially injuring myself or breaking something. Also 3D setups that used Active Shutter glasses give me issues too.

I frequently used the Daydream VR headset when being driven around in a car or bus so I was moving IRL, but differently to how I was moving in VR and apart from the minor annoyance of having to reset my orientation when the vehicle turned it was quite comfortable for me. I have also worked on a VR game and I wanted to see if I could induce motion sickness somehow so I turned off all our comfort settings, stood up in the car so my head was clearly above the roof turned 90 degrees to the direction of travel (which did mess with my balance a little) and had another developer constantly adjust the in-game IPD setting making it look like the entire world was growing and shrinking, it was super weird but no motion sickness. I love VR but have been stuck with the original Vive, I've been wanting to get the Index for years but it only "released" here recently but it always sells out before the release date so it isn't really released and I haven't been able to secure an order for one :(.

    To anyone new with vr games: start with simple and static games, like the steamVR home maps and the quests you can do there and then SteamVR Labs. This way you get used to VR without much movement in the game. After that try some games with teleport movement and the last thing you should do is free locomotion when you are used to the previous steps. And avoid any space-flight/fight games, rolling inside a cockpit in vr is pure horror and only for the most experienced vr players!

    I just bought Oculus Quest 2 (I know FB stuff etc), but i wanted afordable one to check racing games. I was diasapointed a Little when I found out that not many Racing games support IT (unless you use 3rd party software). But except of that airlink, and being able to race in vr is amazing. Also standalone Quest games arw ok, my gf enjoys beat saber and boxing(?!) games.

    I got so motion sick I threw up smh it was fun but I'm just one of those people that get sick during vr sadly. I found that I am fine during games where the environment is moving but my character or avatar is not. But when I played games where I am moving in the game while looking around I got really sick. But then again I get carsick sometimes if I sit in the back of a car and I get seasick too

    I know what you mean with needing to learn how to walk in VR
    When I tried the PSVR in a mall demo I needed to brace my leg against the chair behind me to not fall over when my body tried to counterbalance my forward "motion"

    quest 2 has very little screendoor btw. Like, the quest 1 has it like crazy, quest 2 gets rid of that. I think its at that "pixel density" cost you mentioned, which, yeah, but it works, you can still get some pretty impressive framerates.

    Completely unrelated to the video, any tips for a newly instrument rated pilot when flying into actual IMC? I'm kind of hesitant to do it in a single engine.

    As a mostly bald guy who also shaves his head and keeps a full beard, I find the best way to deal with baldness is to simply own it. I don't have to style, wash, or groom my hair at all. I have learned to love it, and as long as you don't give in to societal ideals of vanity, you will too. It's much more efficient. Even if they offered an easy, 100% effective medication to regrow hair, I wouldn't bother.
    Also, I have a Samsung Odyssey+, and it's been an awesome experience. I don't get motion sickness, or experience the screen door effect. So, even if you can't spend $1000 on an Index, you can still get a very satisfactory VR experience for relatively cheap.

    best games for those who suffer from motion sickness are the ones where your character remains still and stuff come your way, for example beat saber. I am prone to motion sickness, never felt it in beat saber. superhot in the other hand is a nightmare

    I absolutely echo your opinions and went through the same experiences, I have a quest 2 because the index wasn't available in my country but i've never regretted it. in saying that, to anyone with an quest DONT UPGRADE TO WIN 11, it breaks oculus link/airlink and i think to a degree, virtual desktop. no 'real' fixes yet.

    You really should give the Quest 2 a try for both standalone and PCVR. Its the only Headset I've tried where I can't see any screen door effect and... you know.. its $299 and you can play wireless PCVR lol grab yourself a set of controller grips with it and your good. Index controllers are amazing though and you can use Quest 2 Headset with Index controllers on PCVR

    I've got the Rift and screen door sucks.. god rays are worse. But, once you do some racing in VR, just like flying, it's 1000% better than any monitor setup.
