  • Pierre Emanuel Joseph, a Black aerospace engineer in the Canadian Armed Forces, has accused Laval police of racial profiling and mistreatment after he was stopped and had his ID checked while jogging.
Joseph claimed that in 2021, during a long-distance run, he was stopped and reprimanded by Laval authorities before being arrested and having his home searched.
The military official said he was taken home in handcuffs by officers after telling them he had his military ID and uniform at home - the uniform police allegedly said was “fake.”
Following this act of “intimidation,” Joseph received a criminal sanction for obstruction, in the mail.
The experience left Joseph discouraged from taking action for a while, before going to therapy. Now, he wants to leave Quebec. Global’s Phil Carpenter reports.

hey that's not true and quite generalizing I was in Quebec few month ago, I am Anglo from "some other country" and Quebecer were extremely nice to me and very welcoming. I don't even speak French and everyone I met in the week that I spent there was very helpful they even tried to speak English to help me out. Love Quebec and the music festival.

That is just so I’m just an unfair to do something like.. especially when you’re a police officer, and you’re supposed to be up holding the law and then you go and do something like this to a man who serves as country… and call his uniform, a fake and his ID and. That’s just plain races and we should not have that in the police force. It doesn’t belong there.

A police officer helped me when my car broke down on the freeway. I have diverse friends, including those who are black. I have established successful businesses independently. Though I studied at university for 15 years, I haven't secured a permanent job in the last 20 years. Disrespectful behaviour is not limited to a specific race or language group. Speaking up against it is empowering.

This is wrong! No one should be treated like this. Those police officers should be suspended without pay for a certain amount of time and during that period, they should have to take a course on how to treat people equally. As to the military not supporting one of there own, they will suffer in the end. Who wants to be a part of such an organization? Not exactly the public message you want to send to possible recruitees.

Seeing someone that size running is intimidating. It doesn't matter that if you're white or black you will get a talking to by the cops. And it just takes one of those cops that feels less of man to go out of their way to cause you trouble. I am a big guy too. I know the impression I set when I go for a jog. I also had a talking to by the cops. I remember two of them that really wanted to get me on something.

@@c-j-p I think I know why you get accosted by the cops. They are actually being friendly to you in a strange way. They see potential in you. They're testing you to see if you would be a good cop. They push you around to see if you would fight or resist. How you handle yourself. If you've got what it takes to be one of them. It's similar to how gangs recruit new members.
