- MPs returned to the House of Commons this morning, a day after a gunman attacked the seat of Canadian democracy. Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers was greeted with an emotional standing ovation from all parties. Vickers is being hailed as a hero for his role in stopping the gunman.

Look at his eyes. He's almost in tears. This is not the face of a man who wanted to kill anyone, he just did what he had to do. Thankfully such a man was there, able to make the split second life or death decision and stop a tragedy in its tracks.
I think the best part of this is that there's nothing out of the normal. Parliament resumes, starting the sitting exactly as it always has. The message: You won't stop us, you won't make us change.

Just stop for a minute ad look at Mr.Vickers face. He did what he had to, to protect people. Not for glory or fame, but because that was his job. He had to take a life, look at the emotional effect on this man. Its easy to act tough on the internet and say that you would do the same, but I would be surprised if most people could stay cool under pressure. Mr.Vickers you are a hero, for more than just killing that man. But for being willing to make that sacrifice.
it was not just taking a life. your man was there to destroy the very freedoms the Dominion of Canada lives for only because they decided to join a US lead assault on people who had no faith other than worshipping murder.

As an American that would be very welcome. There's many reasons I don't watch the television news anymore and rely on internet news sources and the way they handle situations like this is a major one.

Why not pass a law Benny that restricts armed citizens only to uniformed on duty officers of the national army? Sure, its a hunting rifle but I believe anyone who wants that license needs to prove they are members of a legitimate gun club. Keep in mind there was some public rancor after a hostage situation at a train station was resolved by a sniper. Some say that's overkill and aggressive policing.

While I recognize this man's actions and agree that he should be recognized, I can't help but feel a little bad for him. He killed a man yesterday and another soldier died. I imagine that's a good portion of why he's emotional.
I was thinking the same thing. He is a great man, but i can't help but notice that he seems like he is going to cry. Very traumatic thing to go through
The other emotional aspect is every person in that chamber is his charge, and they're all alive because he did his job.
He isn’t just a regular pedestrian who did it, he’s someone that goes into work everyday preparing for that moment or even worse. And the he and the person who died arent soldiers, they’re glorified policemen. I’m sure he mourns the loss of someone he probably knew well but this definetly isn’t a situation completely unforeseen to him.

A great man..but in his eyes you can see the hurt of taking another man's life.May your heart and soul and mind find peace from that tragic day.
The young punk came up against a 58 year-old. Except that old man had 29 years policing with the RCMP including stints as Chief Superintendant and Director General of Branches of Canada's national police force. He's also an acclaimed marksman.

A true hero, defending one of the greatest free nations on Earth. I am a Brit, but I have always felt at home in this amazing country, and felt the anger at the actions of this low life scum. I love Canada and her people. 'God keep our land glorious and free!

An absolute hero. An ex Mountie that even when rewarded with this high ceremonial role never lost his old skills. I can think of nothing more honourable that acting in a way to protect the lives of democratic representatives gathered to debate and work on behalf of a whole nation. The protection of that free speech is vitally important. This man stepped up quickly and with the least bit of fuss, bravely took out this man, as if he were a mad dog, who threatened us all. It is the internally, not externally, morally resolute, that tends quicker on the draw. And now 58-year old Vickers returns to his post, and just bobs on his heels like the old copper he is. I'd be highly surprised if he's not offered the george medal.
RCMP officers deserve the highest levels of respect. Americans, not so much.

He is not a Sgt, a Sergeant-At-Arms is an officer appointed by the Governor General to be responsible for the safety and security of the House of Commons. Essentially it is a position, not a rank.

I am an American and I can see Vickers and his party walk in Parliament with a new found appreciation from the masses. One can forget protective police is there to protect the legislative leaders from anti-national horror and I truly believe their assassin from the day before was a killer of all Canadians.
All of the MPs gave him such a prolonged standing ovation for his actions that they continued the ovation by pounding the lids of their desks after the first call to order by the speaker.
He certainly deserved his ovation!

This is so incredibly moving. Vickers is the epitome of quiet, dignified duty.
My first reaction was utter disbelief that something like this could happen in Canada, let alone Ottawa.
After seeing the video captured inside Centre Block, extreme saddnes overtook my wife and I. We had visited there several times over the years and this past summer had taken our two granddaughters on tour.
As Americans, we always marveled at how open, friendly, courteous, and clean so much of Canada is. We often thought this is how America could have been or at least could strive towards.
Now that dream or naïveté is shattered.
May the shooting victims ,family, and friends know peace.
The dream has not been shattered. One sadistic person should not have the power to change a country, and we should not let ourselves be changed by the acts of evil people.
Canada is still one of the most respected countries in the world, and my thoughts are with them at the moment.
There is no naivete; the desire to remain open and not over-react to acts of aggression was discussed actively today in the media and on Parliament here. I was proud on my first ever visit to DC to see that the Canadian embassy stands open to the public as does our Parliament. May it always remain that way, no matter how many commit suicide-by-guard there.
I am an American who never been to that building in Ottawa. However, I can see how patriotic Canadians are to their UK heritage and to the traditions that they still swear to today. You mercilessly killed a reservist on ceremonial national duty then broke into the legislative building through an MP only line. I can see why all of Canada mourned and demanded respect anew for what they were fighting for.

Never regret your service to your country, I am a Canadian Vet and was in desert storm with you (albeit with the British army as a "translator" so they could understand what the US Marines next to us were saying over the radio).
This man who you speak of was the right man in the right place at the right time, lucky for all he was also a Mountie and had the training and piece of mind to take action and win (Mounties rarely lose).
But his grace and heroics were well rewarded, he is the Canadian ambassador to Ireland now!

Somewhat ironic eh. The American Is cheered for not killing someone, the Canadian for taking a life. Yet, each doing what had to be done, to the best of their abilities.

The MP's almost died affirming their support for the American attack on ISIS. The man made clear in an officially leaked video his aim was to declare war to save his faith from pure destruction.

A similar practice is employed in each of the provincial legislatures, with each mace representing the authority and power of the respective legislature. I am proud to be Canadian for the billionth time. Don't glorify that despicable human-being but press on and mourn the loss of that poor man and celebrate him by doing what us Canadians do best; standing tall in our unity through our great multi-cultural nation.
Look at this. You can go to Canada and try to shake them. You can kill two of their soldiers in the most cowardly way possible. You can run into the building full of the most important people in the land with only a door to separate you from them, and you can fire your weapon. But it won't even keep them down for a single day. No matter what you do, it won't shake them. This is Canada we're talking about. A nation known the world over for its extreme passion with ice hockey and rodents that use their teeth to gnaw through full trees. No matter what you do, they will remain strong, and they will continue on with life, business as usual. And don't forget who resides just south of Canada. A nation with more guns than people and a lot of people who would jump at the chance to go up and fight for it. I love Canada as if it were my own nation, and I would personally fight for Canada as if it were my own nation. I've been to Ottawa and many other places in Canada, and it's a place you can't ruin. It's a spirit you can not destroy. The harder you try, the stronger it will become. Don't mess with Canada.
