  • At its core, Destiny 2 is a cooperative multiplayer game. But many people choose to play all by themselves. So, what's the solo player experience like as we approach The Witch Queen?

Must admit this hit home. I am at a high level but I have never done any of the raids and other events because I am intimidated by the need to fly frequently. I just can't get this right. Tried Presage and died over 40 times on one try. Gave up.
My experience has been almost exclusively by myself. Living in Australia makes time zones a major impediment. I may garner the get up and go to try again but . . .

Had a similar experience, roommate got me into his Destiny 1 group around the dark below release. We did all the endgame content in D1, was a good run, people had differences and we moved on from that group.
My roommate was more out going than me, as I was terrified of LFG stuff, and would got me into his raid groups and eventually a new clan. If it wasn't for him, I don't think I'd even be playing Destiny 2, and probably wouldnt have bought the expansions in Destiny 1.
Now that we've both moved out, and onto other things in life I think back to those D1 and early D2 days where we would be grinding out endgame content and secrets. He still plays D2 and is quite active, but has since found his own group of hardcore players to do content with and I've sort of fallen away from the game. Other than coming in a few times during a season to hit power and do recent quests, and occasionally still invited for a raid if they need a 6th... Even if I get dragged through them lol

I feel this pain. I have felt it since D1. Imagine actually being in a clan but in order to get help, be taught raids or dungeons you have to show up when they're streaming only. Which of course is sometimes difficult because of my work schedule. It kinda sucks. Being an old fella (52), it's makes even more difficult. No one wants to teach an old man how to play a video game. The proudest achievement of mine is helping people through leviathan. I found my destiny teammates through doing this. I’d done Levi probably a dozen times before trying to take people through it, I wanted to help, to teach people. On my first raid run through teaching it took me and my team 6 hours to teach 2 players (2 of my team didn’t know what to do either) and it was the most fun I’d had playing during that season. I got the Levi dog challenge emblem and haven’t taken it off since because it reminds me of the summer of 2020. I ended up helping 29 players complete the leviathan raid for the first time, and whilst it’s relatively small, I know that I helped free to play players, players with no mic, players who didn’t even know what a raid was complete it, and for that I’m proud of. I’ve helped people discover the best side of this game and I hope that I can do this in light fall again.

Find a good clan and you'll never have that issue. The clan I've been in has a core group of 5-7 players that have been active for years and another 10 or so that are active off and on depending on the season. Even when people are playing other games they usually join the party chat and are willing to hop on and help out with something if needed. I have almost never felt lonelier and more isolated in a game than in Destiny 2. I was so excited for its release on PC, but I struggled more and more over time to actually get any friends onboard to play it with me. Strangers in the overworld were antisocial and unresponsive to chat 100% of the time (I have never, literally never, been responded to in chat outside of the Tower, and even in the Tower it's almost impossible), so making friends out in the wilds was virtually impossible, forcing me to rely on the friends I didn't have. I wanted to share the experience, with friends. I didn't want to be alone. LFG was a minefield and I also didn't want to just play with strangers. In 2019, the first time I ever got enough friends together and attempted to do a raid, I was already having a bad day, and as the only person without experience in it I became aggravated by the others dragging me around without explanation and eventually just left out of frustration. All but one of them ended the friendship. In 2020 I made friends with someone I added from the tower and she invited me to her clan, and I thought I would finally have people to do things with. But almost everyone in there were brash diehard endgame players with no interest in playing with me, and when they heard me in server voice chat criticizing design elements of the game, I was banned from the server and my friend blocked me without saying anything. After that I spent the next year playing it alone, less and less, feeling absolutely no joy or fulfillment in the experience, until eventually I stopped playing completely last year. I wish it didn't have to be this way, but I don't intend to go back. I wish Bungie made a bigger effort to promote socializing in the game, and I wish the players were more social. Thank you for reading my sob story, and sorry that you read my sob story. I am heavily depressed. I miss my friends

This is so true- I started playing D2 around 2019, and I absolutely enjoyed it. I played until Beyond Light was released for one simple reason, I didn't have anyone to play with.
I was mostly solo and doing LFGs, but it's kinda' not that fun to do LFGs since most people are toxic and would immediately boot you for a single mistake.
Games are meant to be played for fun, it'd be cooler if I had a group of friends who also play Destiny so we can just chill and joke around while doing activities instead of try harding every time.

I felt this video so much as a destiny solo player. I would love to do raids and end game content like grand masters, trials or dungeons, but I really have a hard time learning mechanics, most likely in raids, even if I have been playing the game for years. People doesnt have the patience to explain again if I didnt understood it the first times, they get angry or tilted until we finish the raid, and thats not the experiences that I want to have in the game. I want to have fun and enjoy doing end game content. Destiny community really need to be more empathic with the people because we dont know how hard can it be for them, nobody is born knowing and we were all the ones who did not know how to do things at some point of our time playing. Lfg is fine sometimes, it helped me for some end game content, but find a group that doesnt have the "kwtd" for end game content is kinda hard sometimes, and if it doesnt say it u can join and risk it to being judged or to have disrespectful things said to you by those who takes the game like to life or death. Being a solo player isnt bad, I enjoy it, but sometimes is very sad honestly.

I remember back in D1 I started helping people do wrath of the machine since I’d gotten so used to doing it almost everyday for fun. I ended up stumbling on an lfg team that were really inexperienced in end game activities, we got nearing the end of the raid but we just couldn’t defeat Aksis. Now keep in mind that I was one of two who were teaching four others on how to do the raid. It was nearing one in the morning and I was tired and didn’t feel like playing anymore, I told the team that I’d add them and we’d continue tomorrow afternoon. All of the new players sounded so defeated and one of them was a kid and I could hear in his voice how sad he was because he couldn’t complete it. This was one of the main reasons why I added them so that we could finish it later because it reminded me that I was once in his position and that no one would let me play with them because I didn’t know what to do. I was always that solo player that what just keep coming back even though I could never to any end game activities, so when we finally finished the raid the next day it brought me so much joy hearing all of them after completing their first raid.

Hello. I have been playing since the release of Destiny 1. I was obsessed with Destiny, and made so many memories, even though I played solo most of the time. I understand that some people view the story of Destiny as lackluster, but it really intrigued me when I was younger. Even now I’m curious to see how the story will continue to move forward. Eventually in D1, I grew the interest to attempt the raids, and resorted to LFG. It wasn’t the best experience. You’d run into people yelling into their mics at players who mess up on a certain segment, and other unpleasant things. Of course, I eventually completed every raid in D1, because I met some pretty chill raid fireteams along the way, out of pure luck.
Onward to D2 a couple years later, and I was excited to experience the game’s story and lore once again. I went to see what LFG would be like for people trying to do raids like the Leviathan Raid or Deep Stone, but only ever came across people expecting you to have either cleared the raid beforehand, or know every portion of it. I’m always open to learning, but I’ve experienced being kicked mid-raid so someone more well-versed in what to do could replace me. After that, I’ve kind of just been straying away from raids and stuck to story-related content, holiday content, and other activities you can do solo. I’ve tries getting friends to play D2 with me of course, but they’re hooked to other games or can’t be bothered. It’s pretty tough.

I sometimes have little time and just join a kwtd raid to clear an activity sometimes not even using comms since I also get lazy so I don't blame anyone for wanting to clear things clean and quick, but I really recommend to the people wanting to do raids to use lfg, just clear to people that you haven't done the activity like he said or maybe try to check sherpa raids some of the people I have played with consistently have come from my sherpa raids

As a new player, (1 Month) the only reason I was able to get into this game was because someone guided me through everything and answered my questions for weeks. He taught me everything from lore (which is greatly missing in minor details inside the game) to mechanics (some even veterans don't know like how to gain power fast w/o cheesing the system). I fell in love with Destiny, however I'm currently feeling the pain of being a solo player atm.
I want to do raids/dungeons, but there is no matchmaking. Additionally, I feel like I'm expected to "Learn" the raid/dungeon before doing them which is completely counterintuitive. The entire purpose of a game is to experience a game. Why would you need to learn about a section of a game when the whole point of a game is to experience it first hand WITHOUT spoilers! That would be like saying "In order for you to join this movie club to watch "XYZ" movie you have to know how the movie ends, the plot , and why certain characters do certain things BEFORE you watch the movie". THEN WHY WATCH THE MOVIE? Does that make any sense??
The game raids/dungeons are developed in a catch-22 system. They're trying to get new players to experience raids/dungeons but in order to experience it you need to know it before hand. Additionally you need a group of people that know it. The idea of getting new players involved is great, the high expectations for new players and accessibility is not. How can they solve this so more people stay?
It is hard enough to into this game without a tutor. It makes it even harder that you need to learn additional things in order to play content that is considered to be so fundamental to what Destiny 2 is.

Exactly this. A friend got me into Destiny 2 when it released and I've been playing it pretty inconsistently since 2018. To this day the only raid I've ever attempted was when my friend asked if I wanted to be the 6th man in the Leviathan. We played for 2 hours and everyone eventually left because I didn't know what to do.
I'm wanting to give raids another go soon, I just wish there was more incentive to teach new players instead of punishing them. Destiny 2's built-in "Help me do this" system has a Seeker and Teacher matchmaker - Seekers being players who want to be taught, and Teachers being players who are willing to show those people what to do. Perhaps they can expand on that idea; add some sort of extra reward available to teachers on completion of the activity.

Thanks T, nice encapsulation of the solo player experience and the struggles of trying to fit into a group of complete strangers in hopes of advancing your skills and achieving greater rewards and experiencing new and more interesting content. Often solo players (perhaps all players) have a time budget. I’m retired, so this isn’t me, but between school, work, and other irl social obligations it’s a tough balance. Nobody has time to deal with trolls, toxicity, or impatient attitudes. In my experience (3 years of daily play) these are all pervasive in the community. Destiny 2 has a diverse community and high ideals but low adherence and limited enforcement. It’s a struggle. For now I’m content to continue as a solo player until that fateful day that I stumble into a group of unicorns who truly love the game and prioritize patience, understanding, and a sincere desire for cooperation and camaraderie over dominance and gamesmanship.

I would have agreed back when i had friends in destiny honestly, because sometimes just not logging discord and playing solo felt so relaxing and immersive, but after years of playing alone it became depressing. The immersion is just not enough to keep the game fun for me anymore. I usually log in with the new season (or if i discover new changes that i like), play two weeks, get depressed because i miss raiding and laughing with my friends and leave.

I can’t believe I found this video that resonated with me so much just by searching Destiny 2. I’ve never had a consistent group to play raids with so I’m mostly a solo player, so much so that I commonly run strikes alone if LFG or matchmaking fails. I’m also a PS player and they just got rid of PS Communities which was my main and consistent avenue for D1 LFGs. This was a great video my guy. Easy sub right there. Keep it up.

I think a major issue among a whole bunch of different games is the exclusion of solo players. Destiny, Borderlands. Basically any game with giant raids and things of the such. Even certain games like some BRs force some players to have "friends" to get certain things. It's a major oversight, and almost no one is talking about. I think the biggest issue is people who have certain anxieties which prevent them from making these groups, friends, and just playing with others in general. If you look at other people asking about this stuff, the majority of the answers will be to "just ask around," but that's nearly impossible for some people. I personally think that no matter the game, a solo player should be able to access the same amount of content as players who play in groups, because it's extremely exclusional to the people who can't "just talk to people."

  • @xtuffman

The biggest thing that bothers me a lot regarding available content for solo players (yes I'm a solo player) is not having matchmaking for dungeons and at least the master nightfalls.

I feel this on a personal level. Ever since I started playing when Forsaken launched, I've been playing solo pretty much forever. My real life friends don't find the interest to even try D2, and I don't blame them. The new player experience isn't that great and the game is quite expensive and time-consuming just to jump into. I've done GMs, Dungeons and Trials with LFG groups but pretty much always without talking. I would love to finally learn raiding but LFGs and my language skills are making me hesitant. I'm not a native English speaker and while I think I could speak pretty well, I haven't done it a whole lot. I mainly play League and D2 and used to play Minecraft and Overwatch so I haven't been using voice comms that much after all. I do also play CS but pretty much only with irl friends who I'm comfortable with. I once, a long time ago, beat the Leviathan with a random LFG group by joining a Discord server just to listen. It wasn't the greatest experience because I think there were multiple new players. It took us like 5 hours to get through. I don't remember much from that though because it was so long ago. Now the new loot from King's Fall looks so amazing that maybe I will finally start raiding. Last Wish is also so cool and I'd love to learn it too. I've heard people saying that VoG and DSC are the easiest raids so maybe I should start with those. Or maybe I should start by learning how to socialize with strangers on the internet first.

I know there are so many people like this but I've gotta say the impetus really is on you. If you genuinely want a group to do this stuff with you've gotta put yourself out there and find one.
I'm not at all a social person but when I came back to the game in shadowkeep I played solo for a month or two and was considering quitting again. Instead I decided to reboot my old clan and build it up from essentially scratch. Now 2 years on I've done both raids and all the dungeons on day one, and have an incredible group of friends id never have met if I hadn't decided to do something about being a solo player.
Also as an example one of the people I play with most days joined and didn't do anything with us as a clan for a month or so. One day I encouraged him to come do a raid with us, he was pretty much silent but clearly enjoyed it enough to come back for another one. Now he's on my day one team and grown in confidence so much he's the lifeblood of our clan.
Sorry for the rambling post but please if you really want a group this community is incredible and you will find people you vibe with. Its just one of the things that really gets to me as running a clan I've seen plenty of introverted solo players and the ones who put in a little effort finding a clan (It might not be the first one you joining, but you'll know when it's right) will 100% find a group to play with consistently and maybe even make some long term friends, I know I have.

I recently came back to Destiny after a 2 year break. Fell right back in love with it and have been enjoying the new expansion. The community for the most part is still very much how I remember it, people who think they are superior to all and are too good to help anyone. The only thing I want that I would want help with is getting the Ghorn. Yet a month later I still get kicked or ignored. Going solo can only make it to the Ogre. Back in D1 the community was awesome. I was a solo player and I could do everything. Post on the old Bungie forums "400 titan, looking to join fresh Vog with challenge" and get many invites and the team would be solid. Yet once D2 came around and everything became clan focused...it went downhill. The truth is, almost all activities should have matchmaking with the exception of raids because of the mechanics that are involved so communication is key. I still love this game but yeah, it does kinda stink when you roll solo.

Timbo, I'm glad you did this video - its one topic that often gets crapped on by the community because there's a million solutions to this that I just think are all still inconvenient. I've been playing the last 8 years and rarely do any non-matchmade activities. I work all day with people, in meetings, in conference and zoom calls. I want to unwind at night - not be held hostage in my living room by a group of people on LFG just to complete a raid. Moreover, the older you get the more weird it feels being in a voice chat with minors - someone else's kid. Nor do i want to spent my precious free time shopping around for 5 other normal people.
you hit the nail on the head - its expensive because the best content becomes inaccessible. Other big MMO's realized this years ago and implemented strategies for matchmaking. Bungie could wait till the season is over, raise the power cap but not have the Raid scale up for matchmaking. They could introduce the hard mode with adept gear, and an easy matchmaking mode that has instructions in the UI for mechanics. They could chop the raids into strikes and make playlists. Regardless, they're losing players because of this. And as you know, once you put this game down for too long - its really hard to want to go back.
As final example - it took me over a year to get 2 other competent people to beat whisper of the worm. everyone should experience that activity - but the fact is, no matter how much the power level increased, bungie designs power scaling so that its always the same difficulty - that you'll never feel the reward from patience and level increases to be able to solo it with modest difficulty.

This is the same for me. I could never do The Whisper or Zero Hour, i could only beat them to one bug that was on Season of Arrivals that make all enemies as soft as butter.
I can also say that this game needs a global chat, for different themes like Clans and sort of, but mostly so you don't depend of other websites in searching for fireteams or especially if you are a console player (i am too), or even update their "guided raids" so they have instructions visible before and in the raid

I rarely have issues with lfg. I think the biggest tip that helps with lfg is be mindful of everyone's time and be upfront. If you haven't done it before, do the research and gear up beforehand and let them know. You should be able to feel out pretty quick how a group is going to be, so if it starts to feel toxic I just dip out and find a new squad. But just saying you've watched some videos, have a rough idea, and a good build going into it is enough to ease people's worries.

Honestly, you nailed exactly why I quit D2 after playing from launch to Beyond Light. Just the sea of KWTD posts and the lack of people willing to help someone who had no support structure to fall back on - an empty friends list and no clan. I wasn't expecting to suddenly jump in and get a regular nightfall or raid team. I wasn't looking to grind out for an exotic or a particular shader. I just wanted to get the experience, pick up on the lore, and see something new, rather than running the same content over and over and over again. I played Destiny for Bungie's worldbuilding. But finally I got the message: Bungie wasn't really interested in building content for solo players. Outside of the campaign, they assume everyone has friends or a clan or a community that they can get people to play with, and that was why I would get utterly frustrated with the game to the point of having to walk away. Because they're not wrong about the majority of their player base, it's just that those of us on the outside of their expectations get ignored outside of expansion releases.

The host was pretty chill and would explain things but with a lot of details super fast. We worked through the raid and got through with only a few wipes, but the other half of the raid team blamed me for not knowing what to do half the time even though I was assigned different positions. :/ We ended up swapping them out and beating Atheon, definitely a cool experience and I’m grateful the leader taught me the steps, now I can recall most off the top of my head.

I've been on both sides of lfg, making people kwtd and being told kwtd, and teaching people how to raid or being taught myself. This game has one of the best communities I've ever been a part of. It also has one of the worst. I think the main way to help solo players is to help them join a community server or clan and be welcoming. I recently joined one myself just to do raids whenever and it's super liberating. Most of the people are chill, sometimes encounters can take a while but mostly go by pretty smoothly. Most of the good players in these servers (at least the one I'm most active in) are super chill and have done everything so much that one of the only things they can still do is to teach! If anyone is apprehensive about raiding or wants to find a group these servers actually work and help. It's at least better than something like lfg through xbox/playstation.

The integrated lfg works great on xbox, but it does’t give you a community to hang out in, or the visibility being in an active clan gives you. It’s way better than any of the lfg websites at the very least, since you can just post and it automatically creates a party chat and gives you moderation options as the lfg leader, limits it by player count (ie 6 for a raid), invites them directly to the game etc.

For solo players who DON'T want to play solo, here's some tips to help you out. Believe it or not, you don't need to have the best gear in the game to make friends. You don't need a snazzy gamertag or fancy emotes either. The one thing you need is a MIC. You can play destiny with a mic ofc but that's gonna limit you on many things.
Once you have a mic, there's two things you can do now. You can use LFG or you can try friending random people. (many people randomly add me and I'm almost always happy to help) You just gotta put yourself out there, don't be shy. People don't really know that you need friends or help if you don't ask.
Another thing that will help is looking for a clan or someone who is in a clan. Not only will being in a clan give you more people to talk to and play with, you'll also get extra loot if the clan IF the clan is active.
Last thing is raids. If you need to be taught how to do a raid, that's fine however you can't expect everyone to have patience to teach. That's why you gotta put a post on LFG saying you need to learn so you won't have to worry about being kicked or ask friends or clan members (another reason to work on what I said above) so you can get the info and loot you need.
Speaking of loot!! That's one last thing. Like I said, you don't need to have the best gear ever but at least know what weapons are good in general. There's people who are willing to help you but sometimes you gotta pull your weight and not use double primaries in a raid. Sometimes you gotta equip a rocket or linear fusion rifle instead of a sword. If you don't know what to use, there are videos letting you know what the meta is or you could just ASK your fire team.
Congratulations if you read this entire comment. This is the patience you'll need to learn/teach raids lol but fr, I hope this helps anyone who is looking for additional advice on the subject. Good luck out there guardians!

Good kinetics outside of endgame content: Chroma rush (splicer) Scatterlocke, ignition code (Splicer GL) the season of the lost hand cannon and shotgun, peace bond (iron banner) seventh Seraph Carbine, wastelander (dares of Eternity)
I forgot to mention- Judgement and The Last Breathe (From Prophecy)
Exotics that got a buff: Malfeasance explosion does more damage, Arby's got anti barrier, Cryo-bout it (exotic stasis sidearm) got a strong buff,
Exotics primaries are getting a 40% damage buff to low tier adds so here's some possible tips for upcoming witch queen:
Sweet Business: when it spins up, adds will be no more!
      Rat King: stealth 👀
Huckleberry: Shred n never reload (or at least with the catalyst)
Suros Regime and Crimson: Health :)
Cerberus +1: actually becomes a shotgun lol
Lumina: MEDIC! MEDIC! DOC COME ON MAN!
Bad Juju: Never reload and get mad super energy

One of the reasons why I don't play anymore is because all my friends stopped playing and quitting because of the raids and nobody listened and so now when I would hear the destiny ost I would feel sad and think about how good we use to be

7:36 I FEEL this in my soul. I used to played mid to late Shadowkeep, and there was this guy who was insane, I mean literally. You make the smallest mistake, he berates you. He caused me to have a falling out with my group of Destiny friends. All because he had a god complex. He believe that if you didn’t do it his way, you couldn’t do it all. Running raids were a nightmare. I would try to chime in to help my teammates understand something and he would cut me down. I would need help understanding something, and he wouldn’t explain it well, and then insulted me when I did it wrong. These kind of people are why no one likes LFG. This man, is the kind of person that some solo players think everyone else is. Gatekeepers, trash talkers, meta-tryhards. This guy is the kind of person you shouldn’t be. Ever. So I’m just gonna leave with a messed: just be nice. If you’re having a bad day, and are getting frustrated, then communicate that, or take a break. There’s no really no excuse to be a jackass, because your actions might scare one person away from enjoying the beauty of Destiny.

Reading the comments in this chat made me smile. I haven't played destiny in a couple of years but its great to see people in the community helping each other out. I feel the pain since I used to have some friends who raided with me but they ended up leaving me out because one of them didn't like me. Had to use LFG and it wasn't easy at all.

I’ve been a solo player for the longest time. I used an app to find my first raid team to fight Crota and they were the best bunch of guys I’ve met. Unfortunately we didn’t stay in contact and we never played together again. Every other raid I joined was toxic and frustrating, it took the fun out of the game. Now I’m primarily solo, trying to get my friends to play the game with me.
