What if your 5 month old only sleeps 1 to 2 hrs before waking up. We have sound machine, dark room, schedule times, large feed… he falls asleep alone fast but to keep him down is the challenge

My little gentleman is just 6 days and to be honest is quite hard being a parent for the first time, but totally worth it. I just want to thank you for your videos. They are a big help with all the unknown these days
this is single handedly the best advice for us first time parents. such a common mistake for us to instantly soothe them after noises. including me and the mrs. appreciate your video's
my 3.5 month old sleeps 8 hours throughout the night and has been doing so since 10 weeks old. Every baby is different, but I am so glad I had good advice from my mother to put my baby on a schedule after 8 weeks. She is healthy, sleeps well, eats well, and is happy♡
Im on my second baby after 5 years and man this is hard. I usually start crying when my baby does all this but im glad to hear this is normal. I don’t have to go running over every little noise. I love her channel it’s been helping a bit with postpartum.
Oh my goodness, I did not know that with my first baby and felt like she barely slept! Seeing this I'm realizing that she was probably still asleep a good amount of those times that I was trying to soothe her. We still have a hard time putting her to bed and now I'm wondering whether I made it worse by doing that. I'm pregnant with the next one now, so thank you so much for helping me to avoid making that same mistake yet again!
First Time Dad and I must say thank you very much. As a dad I feel like I must rush in to help as my wife gets very tired and I want her to rest. But I did notice that waiting and letting my baby girl make her noises and faces helped her stay asleep. This video helped alot and reassured me on some hunches. I can't explain how much it helps. Thank you and I'm sure my baby girl does too.
Me to, FTD , i must say this vid helps me. I never knew. My wife also needs her rests, im using a noise maker called nappy, for white noise. My baby boy, associates the white noise with sleeping now, two weeks in. The suck reflex i answer that with a spoon. After he fells a sleep i remove it and he goes into REM sleep. In REM he moves alot, now i know. Ah men, i haven't slept in weeks
Emma, once again absolutely nailing a topic that I see new parents worrying about all the time, and definitely worried about myself! Just knowing this variability and unpredictability is 'normal' will help so much I think and I wish I had seen it before having my first child! I definitely picked my daughter up so many times when she was still asleep because of these noises and also thought my newborn should be going to bed at 7- I was sure I was doing something wrong when her bedtime was closer to 10pm!
Our sons' sound kept my wife up all night, where I just ignored him. We have a monitor for breathing, and if he stops, it goes off. I just listen for an alarm or crying, so I've been making my wife go to bed early, and little man and I sleep in the living room. Sooo much better for her. She had panic attacks about sleep over this. If we knew this earlier, oh my the stress it would save.
Newborn's are definitely very loud when they sleep. It sounds like you and your wife came up with a great solution to ensure she was also able to get some sleep.
You are a wonderful man and husband. I was exactly like your wife except my then-fiance didn't help (he moved into a different room because he found the noises irritating). I wish I had this video 18mo ago haha
This is my husband. He pitches up at every slight little sound. I keep telling him to relax because he’s okay lol. He’s just a light sleeper so this made it 10x worst. He wants us to sleep with him so I’m hoping he gets the sleep he needs despite getting up all the time.
Thank you for this video. It's been almost 4 years since we've had a newborn, we're expecting our second in August and I completely forgot all of this. So it was a nice refresh
Emma, Such an important work you do because babies are not just mindless cuties/ mindless troublemakers. They are already individuals, and although they ALL will not remember their infancy, amazingly, many will remember MANY episodes within this first era of their lives on earth. A child given food, but no loving affection - will die. A child who is not given time and occasion to bond with his parents will always feel alienated from them. Thank you for your video guides!!! And may Holy Angels continue to assist all of us on this important journey+💕
Nice! It’s so great to have some confirmation for my parenting choices. My babies were great sleepers from early on. Because I didn’t pick them up for every noise they made!
Here I was thinking there is something wrong with my baby for only taking 20-30 min naps. My 1st child napped 2-3 hours routinely during the day pretty early on and would sleep 6ish hours for her first sleep at night. My 2nd child is a total wild card lol
Nope nothing wrong with your little one! Unfortunately and fortunately, each bub is very different and have very different sleep needs. Can be confusing for us parents though!

Great video ! Thank you ! Your videos has help me a lot to understand more my newborn daughter .I am a new mother and all is new for me . Thanks a lot for making this content.❤
None of my babies or myself can sleep in quiet or dark. And ironically it began because I was feeding my first son so often, I got too tired to get up and put on the telly for each feed. So I started watching shows on my computer. While feeding in bed. He stopped napping all together at 6 months old. By 2 he was drumming, but 5-6 a very accomplished drummer. ADHD like his mumma. This video was great. But just wanted put my hand up here for neurodiverse families. Full blown panic attacks if I'm in a dark, quiet environment. Seems 2/3 of my babies are the same. We can sleep nicely to black and white relaxed music. Lanegan live is our go to.
Everything in this video makes sense expect the last bit. Many midwifes have told me that babies fall asleep faster and sleep better when there's noise around. Babies love wihte noise because that's what they are used to from being in the womb (the mother's organs are considered to emit quite a lot of sound). If it's completely quiet around them, their subconscious might get the signal of abandonment and they will make themseves heard. Otherwise lovely video!
I won the baby lottery. My nb hasn't had colic. At 2 and a half month's, she sleeps at 8 every night and wakes at 6 In the morning. She wakes every 2 hour's to feed.
Thank you for your videos!! They’ve been a big help especially being a first time mom. Baby is 7 months but wakes up every 3 hours . I don’t understand why. Teething? Hungry?
It's so great to hear that these videos have been helpful for you! Unfortunately there are many reasons why little ones wake during their sleep. In this YT video I cover the different reasons and how you can address each one. th-cam.com/video/kapMBrWTvzU/w-d-xo.html Hopefully this helps you work out why your little one is waking.
My daughter was "zombie child" for many many months. Was happy to hear all those noises as she slept near the bed though, silence would scare me more cos...SIDS.
This video is so so helpful, thank you. I'm a first time mum and my baby is 3.5 weeks and he is such a noisy sleeper who grunts a lot, as if he's struggling to breathe, and it's been such a worry hearing all these noises!! His naps are all over the place too and have such different lengths! Really helpful video, thank you.
Really helpful as I have been noticing exactly the same pattern of baby moving during her sleep and making grunting noises and I would rush to pick her up…thanks a bunch
Thank you for these videos it's been a great help , we have a 3 week old and after watching some of your videos , I'm more confident and calm with my baby , 😊
"because your baby's drive to sleep is determined by sleep pressure, your newborn will simply fall asleep when they are tired", I wish that were true for all babies! At 2-13 weeks old, our baby would stay awake for 3+ hours despite rocking, swaddling etc., becoming extremely cranky as a result. Even now, the million dollar question is how to teach her to fall asleep and stay asleep for more than 45minutes without being held.
If you figured this out please let me know! I have two practically grown sons ages 16 and 19 so this isn't my first rodeo but my 4 week old baby girl is a whole different ball game!
Thank you for this video I always hold baby when I see he is awaking and hold in my arms and give him sleep but today only I noticed while sleeping he made noise and then again sleep ..I learned a lot this vidoe
Thank you so much this just helped me a lot... being a mommy of a weeks old after 7years feels like am a new mom 😢 my son does all that Rem sleep thing n I don't sleep much cause I keep waking up every sound he makes 😂
This was suuuppper helpful. I constantly find myself jerking out of sleep and rushing to my baby’s side whenever I hear his animalistic grunts and moans during the night. Smh. Now I know that’s normal. I’ll try to remember that tonight and see if I sleep better 😅
Thank you so much for this video! I’m a new father constantly reaching for google for every little thing. This video is an excellent compilation of important information and has put my mind more at ease! You rock!
What isn't said often enough: Babys don't (always) just fall asleep when they're tired! You need to actively put them to sleep. We spent many weeks wondering why our baby is awake for so long at a time, oftentimes unhappy but not seemingly tired. Our pediatrician and doula didn't help us figure this out either even though we specifically asked whether these long wake times were normal. Google helped in the end and now we have a much happier baby. And this does not only apply starting at 6 weeks like it is said in this video. For us the problems already started at 2 weeks
Annika …same problem here with my baby…wat did u do to hav happy baby…plz help me out replyin….very much worried about my baby…plzz do reply..it means alott to me
With our babies i said we were both disturbing and being disturbed by sleeping in the same room. As soon as baby was put in another room to sleep everyone slept much better. Baby will cry if they need a feed. They need to learn to fall asleep by themselves - not learn to be dependant on you to get them asleep. Sleep is soo important for everyones wellbeing. All the best with getting yours!
i have a one week old daughter and i never thought having a baby would be this hard. i finally broke down after a few days but now I'm getting back on track ❤
It can be really hard. It is also a huge learning curve and adjustment. I hope you're going ok. Be kind to yourself ❤️ And if you have family or friends around and they offer help take it!
Thanks for sharing such a useful knowledge. I was so worried about my newborn baby sleep routine specially i was facing challenges with maintaining room temperature. With the help of this video i will surely follow this and see how it helps ❤
Why does my baby not do this when they are contact napping though? When my baby sleeps on me or in my arms he is quiet as a mouse. It makes me feel guilty like they don’t sleep well on their backs in their bassinet
My baby only gets fussy after changing from that position because he needs to burp still. He isn’t 12 weeks yet but almost. He just takes a while to get all his air out even after already burping and laying flat WILL upset him if he has air. Every baby is different though.
Exactly what i was thinking. We've had three babies and they all didn't move an inch or make a sound when asleep in our arms. This video is nonsense money making rubbish. Babies just don't like being on their backs and being on their own and there's not much you can do about it until they eventually get used to it and it can be the hardest thing in the world at times.
When mine is on me, he still squirms sometimes and settles himself. Today he ‘cried’ while in my arms but slept for another 20 or so. Every kids different
My 6 week old is squirming and grunts LOUD even when held, although a lot less than when he’s on his own. I like to think he’s just working out those baby muscles in his sleep lol there definitely isn’t anything wrong with him. I’ve been up a past few days and nights with him, working out any gas, changing him, feeding him, burping him and he still does this. He has been taking medicine since 2 weeks for his reflux, I keep him upright for 30min before laying him down. He’s not hot or cold. Hes happy as can be when he’s awake (especially when I’m not waking him up to make sure nothing is wrong with him).
Very interesting! 🤔 We’re sometimes picking the baby thinking that she’s going to vomit, which happened a couple of times. Is there a way to know that’s really the case and she’s not just having a REM sleep?
she has a lifesaving reflex to swallow up all spit up (scientists didn't know this in the past that's why the fear of laying baby to sleep on back arose), so you can let her sleep and spit up and swallow it and continue sleeping :) In case there is a mess, you can try wiping part of it away inconspicuously
Our newborn sleeps great when he's in a noisy environment out and about and when he's held. But put him down in his bassinet and he starts wiggling and grunting which eventually leads to screaming and being wide awake all night.
Yep, this is what I'm going through now. My little one refuses to sleep unless I'm holding her and/or nursing her. Setting her in a bassinet or crib is out of the question for her. I might have a chance with a car seat, dockatot, or bouncer.... might is the key word here. But forget the nice safe mattresses(two bassinets and a crib) I have for her. I say all this having already raised two boys (ages 16 and 19 years). This isn't my first rodeo but this little girl is totally different then my boys... 😩
😮 I’m so glad I found this video when I did. My daughter is one month old now and watching this makes a lot of my experience make so much sense and I think will drastically help me moving forward! 🙏 thank you for making this video!
This is 💯 true. I use to have a night light and music on bc I thought babies slept better with it until I forgot to turn it on one night and my son slept for longer and was well rested in the morning. The music is soothing for sure but now I play music only in the day time whether it be in his play time or nap time. No more night light either not even to feed him.
My twins were premature and I’m getting so confused about when to expect things. Any thoughts about how to think about sleep milestones when they are three months old, but one month adjusted?
I'd do it vice versa. So observe the baby and try fitting/placing them somewhere on the expected path of development. She laid it down perfectly. Think of it like a timeline 1. first month - 2 months = falling asleep anywhere (including noise and light), sleeping great in arms (even of non-parent caretakers) and on chests/carriers; sleep is very unpredictable day to day, wake windows as well, lengths of both depend on each other and amounts of nursing, waking every couple of hours due to tiny stomachs 2. slowly after this, from, say, 1,5 - 4 months = starting to differentiate more day and night (since the eyesight is more developed, also senses regarding this circadian rythm/orientation stuff are slowly improving), they will need darkness and silence, they may be sleeping the first stretch of night longer, going to sleep a little sooner, waking at nights for shorter periods - just nursing, occasional diaper change etc; if sleeping a lot during the night, there will be more feeding during the day and vice versa 3. near the end of this period some children sleep the first stretch even up to 8-10 hrs! (and by this point, you can leave them, since their tummies are developed enough to be able to last till the next waking and nurse) 4. around 4-5 month there will be a huge progression in their sleep, they will slowly start sleeping more regularly, there will start to emerge a pattern in their daytime naps (especially if you yourself have a well-structured day), the naps will take about 45 mins and if they link two sleep cycles are linked the nap will be 1,5 hr and if 3 sleep cycles are linked it will be 2,25 hrs long! :) the first 10-15 mins will be crucial for silence and after that you can be fairly noisy and the baby will continue to sleep! If they slept long first stretches of the night, they might loose this and wake every 2-3 hrs again at night. 5. this is far away so I will keep it brief, but eventually they will have pretty scheduled and predictable (perhaps not in the sense of "at 12:00exactly every day a nap starts", but "from the first wake for the day, within 2 hrs a first nap starts, then after that nap within 2 hrs a nap starts, then after that nap within 2,5 hrs a nap starts" etc) daily sleep, 6. which will later turn into 2 naps before lunch and one after lunch, then night sleep 7. which will then turn into one nap prior lunch and one after 8. and then turn to one nap after lunch ...
We're 3 weeks into it. The first two weeks, he didn't make noises he just slept. When I say slept, I mean like we literally still now have to wake him up to feed him. He sleeps 4 to 5 hours at a time and gets actively irritated when woken up to feed. He JUST started to make these grunting noises, and he now is up for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. When he started these noises I of course, started getting nervous. Thank you to all the people who make videos like this. I thought we were doing something wrong.
It’s nice to know about sleep pressure thank you. My LOs naps are very short 30-1hr and I’ve never seen that in any other child so I thought something was wrong
I agree with everything except the "quiet" environment. My parents swore we all slept better when surroundes by noise, including vacuuming, dishes, TV sounds, music, noise from outside, etc. Not everyone sleeps well in quiet environments. In fact, us neurospicy folks prefer loads of brown or white noise.
White noise is great - lots of adults sleep better with white noise! It's more important the noise is free from sudden loud, noises which can cause a person to wake up.
I have heard once before that a lot of parents wake them up because they think they are awake. I'm 20 weeks pregnant right now and thankful to know it.
Thank you so much Ms, I have a 2 week old baby I’m a first time mom and I noticed this as well - I figured if I just give it some time when she makes noise instead of rushing to pick her up then I’l can tell if she’s asleep or not .. lol thanks for confirming this. Your video is sooo helpful ❤️
Great information! Could you also explain if it is better for baby to sleep on its back or on its belly? Also, I have been told not to wrap them in a blanket like a taco, to let them move their arms. What do you recommend?
No baby is the same! One of mine slept from 4pm -2am on the dot, every night, had her bottle, burped her, 20 minutes she was asleep again until 6am. Then she had a bottle every 2 hrs through the day. No matter what we did, where we went, she never changed her sleeping times!
Emma, this video was so helpful as it precisely talked about my main concern of baby not sleeping when she makes all those noises even though eyes are closed. Two additional questions: 1. What frequency of noises is okay. In my experience our baby gets some good sleep for 30-40 minutes after which she goes on to the phase where such noises comes every 2-5 minutes and it seems like she is not restful at all (until I watched this video). 2. Our baby seems to often show attempts of bringing her legs up to chest etc when making noises and seems to be trying to pass stool/gas, but it seems like she does this much more only when sleeping on back on bassinet vs when she is on us or on her belly she seems to not do this. Is this expected? anything we should try to do to make it better for her? (We try the gas remedies of bicycling and legs up etc but not sure if they do much)
Same for my 1 month old! He will grunt, squirm, seem like he is trying to pass gass or poop whenever on his back vs on his stomach or lying on us. We would give his gas drops or just massage his belly and do leg stretches as well, but it still doesn't change anything. I feel so bad for him most of the time, but maybe I'm just being an extra worried new parent..idk. I just want him to be okay, get some rest and also rest myself 😭
Hi! My baby does the same exact thing, where he curls up his legs and makes a lot of noises but only on his back, not while he’s laying on his stomach on me, did you ever get insight on why this happens?
Very informative Emma thanks for this video…I have 7weeks old baby, do I need to wake up her for feed or should I feed based on her cues. Because sometimes I get worried if she sleeps beyond 3hours
Everything in this video was spot on except the end when she said that babies need a quiet environment. I turned on the vacuum cleaner to help my son go to sleep then after 15 minutes of that I turned on the bathroom fan so I could turn the vacuum off to have a lesser noise. He was completely out, but 2 hours later I turned that bathroom fan off & he woke up instantly..... could have slept enough or he noticed his noise was gone.🤷🏾♂️
Glad this video was helpful. The noise of a vacuum and bathroom fan is considered white noise which is a great tool to help little ones fall asleep and block other environmental noises which can wake a baby up before they are ready. So great you found a way to use noise to help your little one sleep.

My little gentleman is just 6 days and to be honest is quite hard being a parent for the first time, but totally worth it. I just want to thank you for your videos. They are a big help with all the unknown these days
My daughter is 10 days old. Cant wait to use this video. I'm loving motherhood ❤
This literally would have prevented my anxiety spiral that first 6 months. Bitter sweet to know it now.
this is single handedly the best advice for us first time parents. such a common mistake for us to instantly soothe them after noises. including me and the mrs. appreciate your video's
So glad you found it helpful!
i just had my 7th and didnt know this!
my 3.5 month old sleeps 8 hours throughout the night and has been doing so since 10 weeks old. Every baby is different, but I am so glad I had good advice from my mother to put my baby on a schedule after 8 weeks. She is healthy, sleeps well, eats well, and is happy♡
How you put her ỏn schedule can u please tell
Please share your secrets
How were you able to put her on a schedule?
Im on my second baby after 5 years and man this is hard. I usually start crying when my baby does all this but im glad to hear this is normal. I don’t have to go running over every little noise. I love her channel it’s been helping a bit with postpartum.
I'm a single father and this video really helped me, thank you ❤
It’s my pleasure!
Sorry to hear that but 💪💪💪💪!
No worries at all!
Thank you so much!
I almost never write comments. But this is the best, most realistic video I’ve come across! I’m recommending you to my friends! Thank you so much !!!
Thank you so much! I'm getting a lot of "advice" from family members to start sleep training my 3 week old. This video is wonderful for all parents
I wouldn’t trust technology! In my opinion that’s a shitty way to care for a child. I bet you have a gadget for everything. Pathetic
Those alarms do not work.
This us by far the best advice as a new mom my daughter grunts a lot in her sleep I’m glad I found this
Thank you for this video. It's been almost 4 years since we've had a newborn, we're expecting our second in August and I completely forgot all of this. So it was a nice refresh
We're expecting #5 in August ❤️
Just had our baby girl two weeks ago, and youtube recommendation decided to give me this...and it's actually helpful..
Glad you found it helpful!
As a dad of four week old twins, I find this video much helpful thankyou Emma!
I will be a first time mom in 6 weeks so your videos have been very helpful! Learning lots of things I didn't know! Thanks 👍
Me to!
Emma,
Such an important work you do because babies are not just mindless cuties/ mindless troublemakers.
And may Holy Angels continue to assist all of us on this important journey+💕
just had my second 2 weeks ago and my first just turned 14 months, it's been hectic for sure but this has been helpful thank you!
Congratulations on the safe arrival of your second bub! Life would be hectic with a newborn and 14 month old! So I am glad I could help a little.
Hai emma, i just love your channel ❤. I’m from india I recently gave birth to a baby boy😊. I watched your videos when i was pregnant. Your vedios helping me so much. My baby and iam both are very happy. Thank you so much and love u for your beautiful videos ❤.
Thankyou for this info .My baby is 3 days old .Knowing this makes it a bit more understandable and bearable
Congratulations on the arrival of your little one! When you understand a bit more about newborns it really can make life as a parent a little easier.
@@EmmaHubbard absolutely.I’m binge watching all your videos as we speak :) your channel has been a godsend
I was picking up my baby so much when she was doing this. Ugh thanks for the video! This is great
No worries at all!
REM sleep correspond to movements in newborns. As a Pediatrician, I completely agreen
This video is so great! My video is 9 weeks and I spotted the vid several weeks ago but I didn't click it because of the title! If it has said newborn sleep tips I would have been all over it!!!
This video is a relief…I was worried abt my baby’s sleep…Thank you soo much 🤗
I’m a mom to 17 month old triplet girls and I had my singleton girl 3 weeks ago on December 13 2023 . Thank you for this video it is very helpful 😊
You are so welcome!
Great video ! Thank you ! Your videos has help me a lot to understand more my newborn daughter .I am a new mother and all is new for me . Thanks a lot for making this content.❤
You are so welcome! And congrats on the arrival of your daughter!
Watching this with a newborn making those same sounds. Thank you, this is great advice
Thank you so much for this, first time dad with a 3 day old, your videos are helping so much !!!
Huge congrats!! I'm glad they're helpful 🙂
In this YT video I cover the different reasons and how you can address each one. th-cam.com/video/kapMBrWTvzU/w-d-xo.html
Hopefully this helps you work out why your little one is waking.
Thank you are a saint!
My baby boys unpredictability drives me bonkers out of fear lol.
Now I can rest easy. :)
Congratulations on the arrival of your
little one!
So nice to hear this video was helpful.
Happy to help! Also a congratulations on the safe arrival of your little one!
Thank you for this!! I have a two days old and this is so helpful! 💙 So glad TH-cam recommended it to me!
Glad it was helpful!
My baby is 5m and I only recently learned about "active" sleep!
Literally just asked our pediatrician today about this, so helpful!
So glad!
Thank you for this video I always hold baby when I see he is awaking and hold in my arms and give him sleep but today only I noticed while sleeping he made noise and then again sleep ..I learned a lot this vidoe
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this information! All the best and God bless!
Absolutely love your video as you explain babies' nature and behaviors with scientific explanations. Lots to learn! Thanks so much
So nice of you ❤️
This has made us relax so much, thank you 😊
I'm so glad!
Thank you so much this just helped me a lot... being a mommy of a weeks old after 7years feels like am a new mom 😢 my son does all that Rem sleep thing n I don't sleep much cause I keep waking up every sound he makes 😂
Great video and information. My baby is 5 months old now, do you have a video about this topic for the next age range?
Very helpful. We just brought out baby home from the NICU.
This was suuuppper helpful. I constantly find myself jerking out of sleep and rushing to my baby’s side whenever I hear his animalistic grunts and moans during the night. Smh. Now I know that’s normal. I’ll try to remember that tonight and see if I sleep better 😅
It’s a very natural response but hopefully this small tweak leads to more sleep tonight!
What do you mean exactly by putting the baby actively to sleep?
Be kind to yourself ❤️
And if you have family or friends around and they offer help take it!
This video come in on time thank you so much my son is a week old and when he does this I’m thinking maybe he’s hungry or something.
Thanks for sharing such a useful knowledge. I was so worried about my newborn baby sleep routine specially i was facing challenges with maintaining room temperature. With the help of this video i will surely follow this and see how it helps ❤
My pleasure 😊
Why does my baby not do this when they are contact napping though? When my baby sleeps on me or in my arms he is quiet as a mouse. It makes me feel guilty like they don’t sleep well on their backs in their bassinet
Mine does this when they have gas this video doesn't make sense
I like to think he’s just working out those baby muscles in his sleep lol
there definitely isn’t anything wrong with him.
Is there a way to know that’s really the case and she’s not just having a REM sleep?
she has a lifesaving reflex to swallow up all spit up (scientists didn't know this in the past that's why the fear of laying baby to sleep on back arose), so you can let her sleep and spit up and swallow it and continue sleeping :)
In case there is a mess, you can try wiping part of it away inconspicuously
This video is very informative and reassuring. I now feel better about my new born's sleep activities ❤
My experience is that when he starts fidgeting or moving around, it usually progresses into a cry.
My daughter was chillin! My 2 wk old son does the moving around😢 this si very good!
Thank you so much!!!!!!!! I have a 2 week old and desperately needed to hear all this.
😮 I’m so glad I found this video when I did. My daughter is one month old now and watching this makes a lot of my experience make so much sense and I think will drastically help me moving forward! 🙏 thank you for making this video!
I'm so glad!
Thanks so much for sharing!
Think of it like a timeline
1. first month - 2 months = falling asleep anywhere (including noise and light), sleeping great in arms (even of non-parent caretakers) and on chests/carriers; sleep is very unpredictable day to day, wake windows as well, lengths of both depend on each other and amounts of nursing, waking every couple of hours due to tiny stomachs
2. slowly after this, from, say, 1,5 - 4 months = starting to differentiate more day and night (since the eyesight is more developed, also senses regarding this circadian rythm/orientation stuff are slowly improving), they will need darkness and silence, they may be sleeping the first stretch of night longer, going to sleep a little sooner, waking at nights for shorter periods - just nursing, occasional diaper change etc; if sleeping a lot during the night, there will be more feeding during the day and vice versa
3. near the end of this period some children sleep the first stretch even up to 8-10 hrs! (and by this point, you can leave them, since their tummies are developed enough to be able to last till the next waking and nurse)
4. around 4-5 month there will be a huge progression in their sleep, they will slowly start sleeping more regularly, there will start to emerge a pattern in their daytime naps (especially if you yourself have a well-structured day), the naps will take about 45 mins and if they link two sleep cycles are linked the nap will be 1,5 hr and if 3 sleep cycles are linked it will be 2,25 hrs long! :) the first 10-15 mins will be crucial for silence and after that you can be fairly noisy and the baby will continue to sleep!
If they slept long first stretches of the night, they might loose this and wake every 2-3 hrs again at night.
5. this is far away so I will keep it brief, but eventually they will have pretty scheduled and predictable (perhaps not in the sense of "at 12:00exactly every day a nap starts", but "from the first wake for the day, within 2 hrs a first nap starts, then after that nap within 2 hrs a nap starts, then after that nap within 2,5 hrs a nap starts" etc) daily sleep,
6. which will later turn into 2 naps before lunch and one after lunch, then night sleep
7. which will then turn into one nap prior lunch and one after
8. and then turn to one nap after lunch ...
L
Follow their adjusted age - that's where they are developmentally for sleep milestones along with other milestones
My baby giggles a lot when she sleeps. And sometimes she even does a little dance while she’s sleeping.
Thank you. Finally a good recommendation by YT algorithm.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks Emma for this lovely video, first time mom learning from u 🤗I love u n God bless you
You are so welcome!
It’s nice to know about sleep pressure thank you. My LOs naps are very short 30-1hr and I’ve never seen that in any other child so I thought something was wrong
Thank you so much from a tired first-time dad!
Any time! Hopefully you get some rest soon! Also a huge congratulations on the arrival of your little one!!
Thank you so much for this video. Very comforting and informative to a first time 38yo mother of a 1 week old baby boy.
You are so welcome! Also a huge congratulations! I hope the shift into parenthood hasn't been too much of a shock
This video was much more informative than I thought it would be
Thanks! I think 😂
That first tip blew my mind. Wow
Congratulations on the arrival of your little one!
So glad these videos are helpful!
Great information! Could you also explain if it is better for baby to sleep on its back or on its belly? Also, I have been told not to wrap them in a blanket like a taco, to let them move their arms. What do you recommend?
They should sleep on their backs for safety
No baby is the same! One of mine slept from 4pm -2am on the dot, every night, had her bottle, burped her, 20 minutes she was asleep again until 6am. Then she had a bottle every 2 hrs through the day. No matter what we did, where we went, she never changed her sleeping times!
Excellent vídeo ! Thank you very much 🙏🏻
All new dads, we got this.
You definitely do!
Emma, this video was so helpful as it precisely talked about my main concern of baby not sleeping when she makes all those noises even though eyes are closed.
Two additional questions:
I’m on here because my baby does this and she has reflux.
I don't know im here for advice as well, but we goin to watch food now, get rid of some which are gassy
Thank you for all information so helpful i didn't know so much about the noisy sleep. But now I know so Thanks alot. 👍🏽🥰
Any time!
