How to correctly burp a baby (asleep and awake) & how to release trapped gas if baby doesn’t burp

  • Burping a baby is not a simple task, however, it is a MANDATORY task if you want to prevent that the gas makes its way into the digestive tract of your baby! Because once it is trapped in the baby’s stomach or intestines, gas almost always causes pressure and pain.
So, in this video, Nathalie Kaufmann, Pregnancy & Birth Consultant and TCM Therapist, and Mathias Ritter, Researcher and Science Geek, explain the 3 most effective burping techniques to help you burp either a baby who is awake or a sleeping baby. Knowing these 3 baby burping techniques can be very helpful because not every baby can be burped in the same position. In fact, some babies are just very difficult to burp which is why it can pay off to try different burping positions.
Nevertheless, despite these strategies, babies do not always burp. And if the baby’s gas cannot be released as a burp, it will make its way into the baby’s digestive system. Because of that, Nathalie and Mathias also explain the most effective method to release trapped gas and most importantly, how to get rid of that baby gas fast!

Thanks so much for watching! 😊 Tummy aches in babies are really one of the main reasons why new parents seek our advice! And very often we find that the baby is either not burped at all or not properly burped. Because of that, we decided to record this video. It is not only supposed to help you prevent that the gas goes into the baby’s digestive tract. We also wanted to show you what you can do if it DOES happen!

      @@snehadayalusnehadayalu7906 Hi there! 😊
Over the first 3 months, babies do sleep A LOT. And they also sleep irregularly. They normally only learn a routine from 3 months onwards. So this can be totally normal.
Nevertheless, you can try to start implementing a sleep routine already, so that your baby internalizes it faster. We teach such a routine in this video: th-cam.com/video/C1_rqoioZ68/w-d-xo.html
      We hope this helps!

Our six week old hadn't pooped in a few days & was definitely uncomfortable. I did the massage before a diaper change, nursed him and then did the back burping method. He gave a large burp but I continued to rub his back for another minute or two (to make sure it was all out) and voila, a diaper full of poop & a settled, happy baby. Hi there 😊,
thanks so much for your lovely feedback! 😘
By the way: in cases like you describe, we often do the following reflexology treatment: th-cam.com/video/osQtHkAaLaI/w-d-xo.html. It helps re-balance baby's digestive system.
It can be tricky to apply when the baby is very little. But it is highly effective.
Alternatively, when a baby gets constipated, the treatment that we explain in the following video may help as well: th-cam.com/video/Ki2ka3UEC4M/w-d-xo.html
      We hope this helps! 😊

      Hi there 😊,
we are not gonna lie to you: some babies are very difficult to burp! Even at the clinic, we are not always able to burp a baby.
The good news is that this will improve over time. But in the meantime, you can try the following:
      1. Sometimes, a burp can only be released after some time. Because of that, it often helps if you keep your baby upright for 10-15 minutes after the feed and to try and burp your baby regularly during that period.
      2. One thing which has also helped many women is to regularly burp the baby while you feed him because it may be easier to release smaller burps... For example: you could burp him when switching sides.
      3. Sometimes, babies take in lots of air during the feeds when the latch is not optimal. So, if you are not sure if your latch is optimal, maybe, you can find a breastfeeding consultant or midwife to help you with that...
      4. If none of his works, try our baby massage treatment (but not earlier than 1 hour after the feed). It's a great way to release the gas "on the other end"...
We really hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there Angela! 😊
Thanks a lot for sharing and for your feedback! 😘
We too met several babies who did not seem to experience any pain from trapped gas although they were super difficult to burp. So, it certainly depends on the baby. But if a baby farts a lot, it can definitely help trying to burp her more often in order to prevent the gas from entering the digestive system... 😊

Massage of the tummy in circular movements along the bowel can also be very helpful. Start under the ribs on the right side of the baby's tummy and then left, down, right and back up. Over and over again. During the massage, lightly press the baby's legs against the tummy to facilitate the departure of gases. In the mean time let your baby lie on its tummy for a while. Fennel tea, which facilitates the release of gas, and chamomile tea, which helps in defecation, can also help with the baby's ailments.

Call it coincidence or luck, wow! I just tried the last massage ( massaging the bony prominence) on my 4 months old toe and voila, a fart.
He usually struggles to burp because he falls asleep when feeding. I will be trying these techniques going forward . Fingers crossed that they work each time😊

      Hi there Emma 😊,
      that's GREAT to hear! 😊
This should always work! In fact, the massage treatment can even help in case of constipation.
And if it does not, then you can also try reflexology: th-cam.com/video/osQtHkAaLaI/w-d-xo.html.
It balanced the entire digestive system of your baby. BUT: it's not THAT easy to apply it on such a young baby 😊

My baby has been next to impossible to burp. She has suffered from gas build up and pain since a newborn. Now that she is 8 months old she is able to burp on her own. However, still can get trapped gas. It’s so sad. Very uncomfortable. We tried everything. Holding upright after feeding and burping for 20-30min sometimes without success. Warm baths, tummy massage, bicycle legs etc. We used simethicone drops with some success. But I wish I had been more persistent with these methods. For our baby the car seat works wonders, so if all fails, I take her for a drive.

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! 😊
Thanks A LOT for sharing your story with us! 😘 Please note that some babies are just very difficult to burp. It has nothing to do with you doing anything wrong. It's just very difficult...
But we love your car seat method! 😊 A perfect example how different strategies can lead to the same success!

Great video thank you! You said to wait 45mins after eating, before massaging. What if the gas is in there, and they are uncomfortable, after eating? Or would you expect that if it is directly after eating, burping should do the trick?
I also heard to not massage while they are crying. What are your thoughts on this?

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there 😊,
      you are MOST WELCOME! 😊
If the gas stays in there right after eating, then burping should do the trick. Massaging them right after eating can make them throw up and it can also be painful for them.
Moreover, you are absolutely right: a crying baby should not be massaged. It's completely pointless. And it actually make things worse. Because then, the person who gives the massage will be stressed. The baby will feel that stress and it will be even harder to calm them down.
Therefore, a baby should settle first before they get a massage...
      We hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there 😊,
such young babies should not sit unsupported, that's right!
Please note though that your baby is not actually sitting in the position we show here as long as you support your baby with one hand the way we show you in this video!
When you do, your hand takes over the work with what otherwise their back and neck muscles are supposed to do...

      Hi there Johnny 😊,
KUDOS to you that you support your partner!! We wished all dads would do that! 👍👍
That said, we do hope that this video helps you! Keep in mind, some babies are just extremely difficult to burp. But it should get better as they are getting older. Plus, you can always do the massage if the burping doesn't work (and use the "other end" to get rid of the gas). Just make sure to leave a gap of about 1 hour between the massage and the feeding!
      We hope this helps! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you, your partner and your baby!! 😊

Hi can you make this video with real babies in discomfort? If you can record each technique, while they are backed up with gas (maybe amongst the different babies in your clinic?) that would be very helpful! We always see on dummies or calm babies, and this is not so
Relatable when I have a live, uncomfortable newborn that needs to be de-gassed right now.
    Thank you!

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there! 😊
Please believe us when we say that we would have loved to record this video with a living newborn. And we can totally understand that people find it difficult to relate to dummies. However, unfortunately, it's not that easy: we cannot just record videos of babies at the clinic and then stream it to millions of people. (Maybe we should get back to producing our own cast! 😅)
So, if you haven't been able to make this work based on our dummy-demonstration, then what we recommend is that you take your newborn to a midwife who can demonstrate how correct burping works on your baby. Normally, they are really very helpful and are happy to explain it to you! So, that could be an option... 😊
We are very sorry that we cannot be a better help here!
We wish you all the best for you and your baby! 😊

Great video and helpful tips, my baby boy is 2 months and spits up alot (my pediatrician assures me that as long as he is not in pain while is spitting up its normal and probably due to the fact he eats aloot) he does sometimes gets gas pains too though and spits up an hours after feeding while sleeping which wakes him up so currently learning how to burp him properly, and would like to know should I keep trying to burp after he's burped once, is there sometimes more to come out? If so for how long?

      Hi there Jade 😊,
      thanks a lot for commenting!
First of all, there are breastfeeding positions which are better than others when it comes to both, babies who spit up a lot and gassy babies. If everything works out as planned, we are going to post a video next week which demonstrates which positions are optimal in such cases.
Apart from adopting a "better" breastfeeding position (in case your position is not ideal), we recommend several things:
      - IDEALLY, hold your baby upright for some 20-30 minutes after the feeding. But it should really be upright, like when you do when you burp him over your shoulder. We say "ideally" because we are completely aware that this is not always doable, particularly during the night. However, it IS something that can really help.
      - Ideally, you burp him once right after the feed. Normally, this is absolutely enough. However, when you do keep him upright, he might burp more often during that period because then, he is in a different position which helps him release more gas.
      - The other thing is: excess gas is also often a problem of correct latch because then, a baby takes up lots of air together with the milk. So, if you have any doubt that your son is correctly latched onto your breast, we encourage you to talk with your midwife or a breastfeeding consultant, so that they can observe you during one feed and give you feedback. Another way to solve this is with another breastfeeding position (but more about this in our next video).
      - Finally, if you do have the feeling that he takes in lots of air during the feeding, you might also want to burp your baby in between the feedings, for example, when you change sides...
We hope these tips help you!! 😊
We wish you ALL THE BEST for you and your baby!! ❤️

      Hi there! ❤️
First of all: CONGRATULATIONS to your baby from the 2 of us!!! 🥳🥳 It must be such a relief to hold your little one in your arms!! We hope you enjoy every minute of it!! ❤️ 😊
Thanks SO MUCH for your lovely comment and feedback!! 😊😘 We really appreciate it and are very grateful and happy that you find our channel helpful!
      Regarding your questions:
When the hiccups come during the feeding, we have found that burping can help stop it.
Another thing that has worked for many women to stop their baby's hiccups is a pacifier 😊
      Regarding the frequency:
When you are breastfeeding, try to burp your baby whenever you switch sides or whenever your baby makes a break. When you are bottle feeding, burp your baby frequently during the feeding and of course after the feeding!
      We hope this helps you!
We wish you all the best for you and your baby!!❤️

My baby softens like a burrito after food cause he is so sleepy. Its often impossible to burp him. Second issue i have is that baby in the night, when being fed, wakes up, then starts crying and wont go back to sleep. Any ideas of what to do?
Third issue and question, how long should one try to burp baby?

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi there 😊,
please note that some babies are just VERY difficult to burp - if not impossible. But please don't worry too much about that! You don't need to try and burp your baby for hours. Normally, if your baby cannot be burped within 5 minutes, it's not gonna work.
The only question is: is that air causing tummy problems? Because those could be the cause that keep your baby awake.
In such cases, you could try this treatment: th-cam.com/video/osQtHkAaLaI/w-d-xo.html
The advantage is also: this treatment can be done even when baby is asleep
      We hope this helps! 😊

So timely! Many thanks for another very informative video!
It's not related but I haven't been able to feed my 1 month old baby directly, as I was told my nipples are too big for him (around 22mm). Is there any way and steps to make it happen? It's would be very helpful! I'm currently lactating him using nipples of feeding bottles...

    • @CareAboutLittleOnes
      @CareAboutLittleOnes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there ❤️,
as much as we would love to help here, but there is really only just one thing that can help. And that's a breastfeeding consultant! That's because a breastfeeding consultant has to watch you during breastfeeding, they have to check your breast, your nipples and your baby and then they can give you advice on what to do. We have never ever had a woman whose nipples were too big to breastfeed and personally, we doubt that 22mm is too big to for a baby (with much respect to the person whoever told you that 😊). But again, this is really something that a breastfeeding consultant has to look at...
Is there a way that you can get in touch with such a consultant?

@@CareAboutLittleOnes Thank you so much Nathalie and Mathias! There isn't breastfeeding specialists per se around where I live unfortunately but I did speak with a couple of midwives. I was told it was actually more to do with the toughness of my nipples (along with the size). I was guided to massage them well before breastfeeding. Baby needs to get used to it and it seems he is still confused but it's slowly working!
Many many thanks for your advice one again and looking forward to your future videos!

there is not necessarily a problem when you experience something like that! We had a similar problem with our son (when he was sleeping). But it was all good. No problem at all. That's just what he did....

      Hi there 😊,
you are right! Young babies should not attempt to sit on their own because it could damage baby's spine (they basically lack the back and neck muscles at that stage).
However, if you support your baby with one hand the way we show you, then it is okay. Because then your hand takes over the work of what otherwise their muscles would do...
