  • These 5 mistakes can potentially delay a newborn's development, and they're really common because they're so easy to overlook. None of this is the fault of any new parent. Some are caused by simple habits that are a result of modern life, while others are simply a result of not spotting the warning signs as early as possible.
Either way, after watching this video I hope you feel a little more comfortable and confident in knowing some best practices you can follow to reduce the risk of developmental delays, as well as what to watch out for so you spot potential problems that could delay development early.
As always, I hope you find it helpful!

Incredible insight on the importance of correct baby-wearing to prevent hip development issues. Many first-time parents might be surprised to learn about the 'M' position and its role in healthy hip joint formation. This video serves as a valuable resource, highlighting the significance of informed parenting choices. A must-watch for all new parents looking to support their baby's development.

So, I never restricted my sons movements from birth per your advice in previous videos. When he was awake, I would put him on the floor on a play mat and did lots of tummy time. His pushchair was a bassinet type, so he would still be able to move about while being on his back.
From two months he was able to slowly push himself towards. At 4 months, he was sitting up. At 5 months, he was pushing crawling backwards. At 6 months, he was crawling properly on his hands and knees and had learned to stand. So I definitely agree with the advice.

This is good general advice, but I think people can take it the wrong way.
Reaching baby milestones is not a race, and no one but you will remember if they rolled at 2 months or 4. As long as you don't do anything egregious or unsafe, it's totally fine to let your baby develop at his/her own pace.
We did tummy time every wake period since day #1 (at our pediatrician's advice) and pretty much did everything that this video suggested. He hit all his motor milestones exactly at the median or a bit later: rolling back to front at 4.5m, sitting at 6.5m, crawling/cruising at 9m, walking at 14m. I think a lot is temperament: he's just very cautious and risk-averse (so are his parents).

Fantastic video and a must-watch for all new parents! The emphasis on minimizing 'container hopping' and encouraging floor play provides an essential foundation for healthy development. It's incredible how simple changes in our daily routines can significantly enhance our baby's physical and cognitive growth.
I'd like to add a point about the importance of 'tummy time' for newborns, which complements the video's message wonderfully. Tummy time, when a baby is awake and supervised, is crucial for developing neck and shoulder muscles, improving motor skills, and preventing flat spots on the back of the head. Starting tummy time early, even for just a few minutes a day, and gradually increasing the duration can make a big difference in your baby's development.
Additionally, engaging with your baby through face-to-face interaction, talking, singing, and reading during floor play can greatly boost cognitive and emotional development. These interactions not only strengthen your bond with your baby but also support language development and social skills.
Thank you for sharing such invaluable insights and practical tips. Your guidance helps us create a nurturing environment that supports our little ones' growth and well-being.

I remember getting advice to put them in a seat aftet feeding to prevent reflux and spit up. I have triplet grandbabies now and we are just learning about this 😮 the triplets are preemie boys born 2 months early. They are almost 2 months now and their due date is the 29th of this month. 2 of them are already rolling. They wiggle and squirm constantly and we are avoiding seats.

Whenever my babies fell asleep in the carseat and I really didn't want to wake them up, I propped the seat to lean backwards, so I could see that the chin is not touching their neck and their backs are horizontal. I also kept them close and checked if they're breathing every few minutes. Also if they fell asleep during the car ride, I would check on their breathing on every red light, just in case.

I’m really glad you talked about positional asphyxiation, car seats are a big one for that especially now it’s common to have a clip that attaches car seats to prams.
Please don’t do this unless the total amount of time for both trip there, around the store/park/whatever and back home is less than 40 mins- this isn’t a made up figure the NHS in the UK have it on their site for a reason.
I live so far from stores and family that I had to purchase a “car cot” - it’s a flat lying down car seat made by maxi cosi and used that for the first 6 months of my sons life because everywhere I needed to go like stores and the GP were an hour away, family being 7 hours away.
Don’t take risks with your kids ❤❤❤ You’d be horrified to know how many babies are being brought to A&E limp due to positional asphyxiation in car seats these days 😢

Why didn't you add car seats to the list of things that can cause positional asphyxiation? It's so common for parents to just leave their babies in the car seats to sleep after a car journey, not realising how dangerous that is. Or not making enough brakes out of the car seat during a journey.

My lil is 5 months and disliked tummy time. I started rolling him over and back as a fun activity. Sometimes I would lay him on his belly and coax him to lift his head for 2 mins and slowly increased over time or when he gets very fussy. His doc recommended Pt and after the first appt I noticed an increased difference- he dos not dislike it as much especially now that he can roll over from tummy to back. He started now rolling from back to tummy.
Also seeing another baby do it and get round I think encouraged him.

    • @dominiquej95
      @dominiquej95 หลายเดือนก่อน

I would start his tummy time when he woke up in the morning- to limit spit up and plus he is more complacent since he is still waking up.
I would do a lil morning stretch to get him started when he was on his back. It also helped relieve any excess gas, then rolled him over. Then I imitate the movement or motion I wanted him to try. He would look at me like “silly mommy” or sometimes actually try to mimic me for a few minutes before he is like I’m over it and ready to eat.
I would do this after every nap time and a bit before he goes to bed- 3-5 times a day. Starting at 2 mins and then try to work it up to 5 mins. He would mainly last 2 mins and the.n start to fuss. But I learned a lot at P.T and using the Kinedu app has very useful activities that ranges and some are just 5 mins. It is pricey but it’s annual and has helped me a lot. Especially since I can’t afford a lot of gadgets or toys.

I left all three of my babies on the floor with their toys and just made sure their surroundings were safe. My firstborn started walking while holding on to things at 7 months, my second was a big crawler at 6 months and started walking holding on to things at 8 months. Both walked pretty balanced by 9 months. Now with my third he’s 7 months and a crawler. I would definitely say that besides floor play, I also spent a lot of time practicing on the bed and couch to strengthen their core.

my son is almost 3 and sometimes he will still throw food on the floor (although rarely), but when he was about 1.5 years old things with food got much easier. don't take my advice as medical advice but as long as you still feed him breast milk\ formula you don't need to be stressed about him throwing the food away when he is done, it could be for multiple reasons- he could be full\ not like the food\ or just bored and wanting to play..at this age they are still just starting their journey with food and the best advice I have been given is to let them decide when they are finished with food and not stress about it even tho cleaning afterwards is a pain. try to make each meal time a positive experience with new things or new presentation of food, and eat with him next to him..this will help him the best way to open up to new kinds of food and also to manners and what to do or not to do...besides that brace yourself with some more patience and soon it will be rewarded!

The diagram you used for positional plagiocephaly is actually a picture for a more serious condition called craniosynostosis. In positional plagiocephaly the sutures would still remain open, but the image that was used showed the lamboid suture as fused, hence being cranio. It might be good to do a video at some point on paediatric issues to spread awareness like craniosynostosis, undescendend testes, tongue ties, plagiocephaly and tortocollis (repetition), breastfeeding difficulties, jaundice etc. Just a really basic introduction, not medical advice, but just a bit of information so people know about common conditions to know if they may need to seek medical attention for their kid.

@themarieoakes yes, my baby had torticollis/flat head. I caught it at a few weeks old. Looking back I felt something was wrong when she was first born. It took many months and multiple providers for her to be correctly diagnosed and set up for PT. This set her back for many things. PT was not working after months she still couldn't turn her head. So the therapist suggested having her tongue and lip ties looked at. Again misdiagnosed many times. Finally found someone that said she had both. Had the surgery done and she finally started making progress with turning her head, and drinking a full bottle without crying.

This is way easier said than done. I live in a little house with nothing put concrete flooring everywhere. I also have to take my daughter to school every morning which puts us in the car for about 30 minutes total at least unless I have to stop and shop somewhere also so he can be in the car seat for an hour to a few hours sometimes but I take him out to breastfeed him before we head home. I had to do a lot of this with my daughter also and she turned out fine. Of course I'm going to try to get him on a flat surface more now that I have a little rug and I'm going to put some blankets down but I can't just leave him there when I have so much to do like wash clothes by hand. I might try using our pack and play it just feels so uncomfortable but I guess it's better than the concrete floor lol

My 12week old baby (3months on the 21st of April) is said to be advanced. She was holding her head up without a wobble for long periods since she was about 3wks, is highly alert, and can keep focus on her eyes 4w, rolls to tummy and back since around 8-9wks, laughs, sleeps through the night etc.
However, I cant do to much to make sure she stays ahead.. bc I need back surgery. Im basically disabled and am in constant intense, paralyzing pain so all we do is sit in the swing, cuddle in the bed, watch tv, i read to her and do flash cards, and do postive conformations and I hold her OFTEN.
What is some things I can do to make sure im not stunting her growth?
I just really wish I could do more, wish I could go out for walks and or be able to move around with her. Im also basically a single mother so I have no one else to help fill my slack till I get surgery.

That is pretty normal for a newborn! I’ve had 2 babies (now going on 4 and the other 17 months) and newborns just eat and sleep.
As your baby gets a little older his/her wake window will get longer and when baby wakes to feed he/she will stay up a little longer and then it just grows.
I usually just held my newborns fed them and then held them. I would lay them in their crib for periods of time.
As they wake and are awake longer that’s when I would do more tummy time and floor time!

I have 7 month old who was in these devices too, as I also had a csection and no "village" to help me. My son used to hate tummy time and being on his stomach. Until about 5 months and doing exercises that stimulate their instinct to roll. My advice would be to have high contrast toys and soft baby books or a play mat (black & white) to catch their attention, it helped my boy. Now at 7 months (almost 8) he loves tummy time, he rolls over, holds his head up, plays with his toys and is now instinctively trying to crawl.

I held his hands and feet together and gently rocked/rolled him from one side to the other. I also had stimulating high contrast (black & white) pictures/flash cards that my baby would find interesting causing them to want to roll and hold their head up to see it better. Toys that make noise, like raddles or squeaker or crinkling. If or when baby gets upset or frustrated during tummy time, dont stress, calmly sooth them, and try again later or another day. If she’s not interested in toys they may be beyond her developmental phase still, such as vision isn’t as far along yet. (Hypothesis). You can trigger the pupil dilation reflex to strengthen her eye muscles. I didn’t shine a light in my babys eyes. But at night we did turn on and off the room lamp. And even the next day my LO was more interested in toys. It’s also ok, good even, to shove rattles in their fists. I used a balloon string at first cus my baby’s hands were so tight! But she was able to pull on the balloon and it was high contrast against my ceiling. So she was still learning cause and effect and using her eyes. Babies really don’t just hit milestones on their own, they need inputs

They have car seat mirrors that can show you your babies face when you look in your rear view so you’d know to pull over if your baby looks blue

Its okay. You're not too late to change lifestyles you feel your might baby need. I made all of these mistakes, and my baby is meeting her milestones before her marks. Its all subjective. All this content creator is doing is informing people of _potential_ issues. Dont let the baby-fear get to you, your little one will be okay. Its not too late to make those changes if it helps you and your little one

    What about swaddling?

    • @petergriffiinbirdistheword

Swaddling has a purpose. It's to soothe a baby or prevent the fear reflex. You should not have a baby swaddled all day.

So what about having babies in car seats for a longer trip and them falling asleep, should we try instead to keep them awake? Is there a way to lay them back further or prop them to avoid possible asphyxia while keeping them safe in their car seat? At what age does this become less of an issue?

I did 8 hour road trips with my child when she was 4, 8, and 11 months old. What I was advised is to make pit stops every two hours and it’s ok for them to fall asleep only if your car seat is installed correctly. We would always make stops at a gas station or rest stop that they have here in America.
