Its been over a year since you posted this and unfortunately redcat still hasn't fixed pin issue. I got my 11474 set of cnc steel gears today and same problem. Uhhhhh, c'mon redcat get your act together and fix this already. By the way your video is great help.👍🏻👍🏻
Hey there, how are ya? Thanks for the great video! I'm new to the crawler scene. I just bought my new Redcat Gen 8 and on the 1st day using it I broke my CVD gear on drivers side front portal. So I upgraded to the chramaly front L/R axle shaft with top portal gears. Then I just ordered everything lol flat bottom skid, crawler ESC, Brass extended wheel hubs, upgraded servo, and CNC steel gears for transmission & transfer case. While I've been trying countless attempts to install these gears into my Trans case it was only then.. Today on Father's Day 2020 ( Happy Father's Day to you also) after watching your video a light bulb 💡 went off in my head! That's why I can't get my pin to line up for my transmission driveshaft! Because like you mentioned REDCAT MESSED UP! That pin doesn't sit flush in the steel gears as it does in the factory plastic gears! I've been beating my head against the wall wondering why I can't get it back together again!! Thanks again for your very, VERY, USEFUL INFORMATION & DETAILED VIDEO! Have a great day!
It sounds rough compared with my first generation scx10 with helical gears in aluminum transmission. I wonder if boomracing makes helical gears for shis one also. I use helical delrin spur gear from xtraspeed. Reduced the noise significantly.
noticed on the skid that it doesn't look like you installed the washers that Bowhouse is suggesting now. Supposed to be a redesign in the works as well. Good point bringing up the shimming for the shafts, no better time to do it than as your in the tear down. lol.. Power! Did you see the negative wire raise up when first giving it throttle. You need to change up your course, got it memorized for knowing where the wheels have to be and how much throttle. My course, the rocks shift and roll every ascent and descent so I have to watch what I am doing every time.
Yeah that memo/update came out after I recorded this and yeah I gotta shift some stuff around on the rocks. I’ve driven every way you can imagine across them. It’s crazy at how wires move when given power.
Nice one. Hopefully that drive line is fully bulletproof now. Do Redcat get into a discussion with you on your videos? Just wondering how you knew they watched them
I chat with the engineer who designed this truck on a weekly basis and yeah they do watch them, I told him about the pin and shaft issue and he said he will get them taken care of. I gotta say the Redcat team really want to get rid of the stigma of being a cheap knockoff company and they are doing great.
@@ExocagedRC most companies that want to shake that image just jack the prices through the roof since people are programmed to think "you get what you pay for" I hope redcat doesn't do that. They are already a few companies in the RC world that think being priced outrageous gives them superior quality. Sadly ...it does not.
I like it, in the gen7 you can get a kimbrough 46t spur gear that bolts right on to help get the speed back from the portal reduction. I have a portal Gen7 with an axial trans that I could put mine in too. Its currently broken with another knuckle arm so I'm waiting for the aluminum parts to come out.
@@ExocagedRC yeah I already had gone to 32p gears, but figured I'd play around with it. It has ran a few different brushless setups, and wanted to go back to simplicity.
I printed the skid from thingiverse and then engraved the silver part on it. I can make more but with shipping and custom engraving its $20 shipped in the US.
@@ExocagedRC 20$ for shipping? And how much for the skid plate? PS: Did you do a video on it? Link would be cool. Another tuber did a video (can't touch yours, ha), and it looks like swapping in out is work.
That’s for everything. The skid, the engraved part and shipping. Total of $20. I haven’t done a video on just the skid. I got the skid stl file from thingiverse.
It depends, if you are putting brushless to it then its something I'd consider, if you have the clutch set right then they should never have an issue. considering I killed the pin area on the T-case gear and I test all kinds of motors and stuff I feel this is a necessary mod for me.
Probably the shaft is just hard anodized and not heat threated thus why it mushroom, Its cost effective. So putting the gears it should have come up with in the first place added another +50bucks to the overall cost of the car, It is now more expensive than a TRX4 Sport.
Man I'm glad you made this video thought I was going nuts couldn't get any of my pins in thank you for this video.

Awesome thanks for the info link in the description I'm going to order some of those gears for my gen8 👍👍
yikes an unproper hardend shaft lol great work and explanation 👍
gotta be a mechanic or inclined as such to go down that path..lol, I mean just look at all the parts names for mechanical components and hardware.

Great how to install of those gears.

I’m about to change the same gears in my gen8 v2 today. We’ll see how it goes! 🤞🏼
How’d it go

It turned out great, and was really easy.
I heated the grub screw with my solder gun and they came right out !

How do you like the 12t motor? I have one on the way, was thinking about running it in my Gen 7 with the portals.

I also put all steel gears in my gen8 and had the same pin issue but everything else was good
Did you file down the pin to get it in.
Love all your videos just got these gears from my cat project curious as to what was wrong with your old gears as far as damage?
Brian Herskowitz I stripped out the top tcase gear, so it was time to upgrade.
Good info brother
Yet another great video! Question from about the skid plate mod. Where did you get it? Link?
I printed the skid from thingiverse and then engraved the silver part on it. I can make more but with shipping and custom engraving its $20 shipped in the US.

Williston Florida
I had to trim the PIN to get it into the Wendigo
Love how heavy those gears are! Tech vids are so helpful! Do you think this is something you should do right away or weight for it to break first?

Are you running stock suspension?
Can you do a video on how to re oil and maintenance of the shocks
Sunshine Moto yeah stock suspension. I haven’t opened up the shocks or anything. They’ve been really good.
@@ExocagedRC mine seem soft one in particular
It does sound like a rock crusher.
ok, so they are meant to be that loud
These are loud

Well yeah most of my trucks get expensive and yeah its now more than a sport.
